Scharff Weisberg Supports IBM Centennial Gala at Jazz at Lincoln Center

IBM Centennial

IBM Centennial

It’s not often that a giant of American industry marks its centennial but when IBM celebrated with a gala at Rose Hall, the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Scharff Weisberg (SWI) provided AV support, including the LED wall that served as the entire scenic element for designers Batwin + Robin.

“IBM wanted this event to be theatrical, so they hired 101 Productions, a long time client of Scharff Weisberg, to produce an event that ended up being pretty spectacular,” says SWI event manager Sarah Ibrahim. “There were aerial performers bouncing on a giant vertical canvas projection surface, Jessye Norman singing ‘Great Day,’ Steve Martin playing the ukulele, violinist Joshua Bell, Patti LaBelle, a children’s choir and a dance troupe. Morgan Freeman was the emcee.”

As the exclusive AV vendor for Jazz at Lincoln Center, SWI supplied all of the video equipment and engineers for the gala evening. Upstage was the main scenic element: a 36×18-foot LED wall composed of VER Everbrighten BR7 7mm high-resolution LED display modules. Downstage was a 20×4-foot LED supertitle-style screen comprised of VER Everbrighten BR7s. For the aerial performers, quadruple-converged Christie Roadster S+10K-M DLP projectors displayed, via DVI over fiber, 1400×1050 images on a canvas backdrop measuring approximately 34×26 feet. The projectors were driven by a Dataton WATCHOUT 5 playback system with content designed by Batwin + Robin.

“Scharff Weisberg was great as always. When it got down to the time frame – we had all of three weeks for the whole project – they are the only ones who could have pulled it off,” says Batwin + Robin’s Robin Silvestri.

“The show was a jam-packed 90 minutes,” she continues. “The set consisted of 100 points of light plus the LED wall. We designed the projected backgrounds, which ranged from animated titles to a three-minute documentary to a piece celebrating IBM’s involvement in Apollo 11. We also projected the surface of the moon onto the canvas for the aerialists to dance across. It was a great show.”

Ibrahim agrees that the biggest challenge was the time factor. “The client came to us with specifications for this event only a month beforehand, and sourcing the LED was really tough. “We were lucky that VER came through for us with their 7mm Everbrighten product. It beautifully displayed a wide variety of content, including abstract graphics, photographs, and a documentary video, with the minimum viewing distance at about 20 meters. It looked beautiful.”

The aerialists’ performance against the vertical canvas also posed potential challenges. “The canvas wall behaved like a giant video trampoline, with quadruple-converged projectors displaying images of the surface of the moon,” she explains. “We anticipated that we might have issues with maintaining a coherent image given the movement of the canvas, but we got lucky and the quality was pretty wonderful. The way the dancers were lit by manned spots from the side made them really look as though they were dancing with the moon surface was moving beneath their feet.”

The IBM Centennial Gala was produced by David Binder and directed by Moises Kaufman and Jerry Mitchell. The production managers were Colleen Houlehen and Mary Duffe.

Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications are collaborating partners to clients requiring unique and imaginative solutions for their event, spectacle and large-meeting lighting, sound and video needs whether local, national or worldwide. Phantom Celebrates 25th Birthday With HARMAN’s Studer Consoles

LONDON, United Kingdom— To celebrate 25 years of The Phantom Of The Opera, Cameron Mackintosh staged a special production at the Royal Albert Hall recently, with three sell-out performances over two nights.

Aside from the enormous amount of rehearsal time required, the production tasked broadcast production company, Red TX with mixing 172 channels—spread across four stage boxes—on its Score Live-powered HARMAN’s Studer Vista 8 digital console, which sits at the heart of their new RED II production vehicle.

“This is technically the highest channel count we have ever run from one truck,” confirmed Red TX managing director, Ian Dyckhoff. “It creates a bit of added pressure, but having so much combined experience between us is a real bonus.”

He added that in the past this channel count would have required a second vehicle. “But the Studer desk has enough inputs to surround mix everything independently. Thanks to the Vista 8, we can do it in one.”

Three recording stems were set up to record in 5.1 and stereo (for cinema) and 5.0 for other TV broadcasts. Rather than taking an automatic stereo down mix, Red TX created a separate stereo mix, providing greater control, for cinemas unable to take surround sound. They also employed a unique Cinema Matrix 5.1 setup that uses the X-curve for cinema equalisation.

Each Studer HD interface card can carry up to 192 channels in Vista systems at sampling rates of up to 96kHz, and is connected to the DSP core by standard CAT5 twisted pair cables. The system automatically detects newly inserted audio cards and assigns the required number of audio channels to them by pressing the front panel ‘Reconfig’ button—a feature Red TX finds particularly useful.

In fact RED II’s Studer environment, with D21m digital I/O frames and stage boxes, is configured to enable 192 channels to be recorded from the desk, with three MADI streams, 48 channels of AES (24 stereo) and 32 line.

Red TX had arrived at the Royal Albert Hall several days before the show for line checks, rigging tests and to set up templates—and with the lead characters joined by a cast and orchestra of over 200 the extended prep time was certainly needed, as the show proved challenging.

Working alongside live sound company, Autograph Sound, who supplied separate radio mic, choir and orchestra mixes to bring all the feeds into the truck independently, the RED II crew used 57 snapshots on the Vista 8, mostly for the orchestral arrangements. Said main sound engineer, Tim Summerhayes, “We used a standard 2-second crossfade on the snapshots and they were as smooth as silk.”

The production itself was a major success. In total the live broadcast was transmitted to 1,000 cinemas in the UK, a further 200 in the US and 200 in Europe.

Canalis Nightclub Opens In Vietnam With JBL Loudspeaker System and Other HARMAN Brand Products

NORTHRIDGE, California – Situated in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, the luxurious Canalis nightclub enjoyed a spectacular mid-May opening, which saw appearances by top Vietnamese singers, Ho Ngoc Ha, Dam Vinh Hung and Duong Trieu Vu.

The 400-person capacity dance and live music club, run by an entrepreneur with three other venues in Vietnam’s largest city, has benefitted from a USD $500,000 makeover, and a new HARMAN’s JBL loudspeaker system, installed by local distributor, Basao Investment—forming part of a complete end-to-end system.

The company was awarded the contract for consultancy and installation following a competitive tender, and Basao’s technical support manager, Do Thanh Danh, worked closely with the owner and his technical team to deliver the solution. To provide the desired coverage, Canalis Bar’s main stage has been equipped with eight JBL AM7315/64 high power 3-way loudspeakers, four JBL AL7115 single 15-inch low-frequency speakers and six JBL ASB6128 subwoofers at both stage left and right, with four JBL SRX715F speakers acting as delays at the rear.

Powering the main stage system are four Crown CTs1200, six MA5000i and six MA 9000i amplifiers. The delays are powered by a further MA 5000i with a dbx DriveRack 260 processor and BSS FDS-336T Minidrive speaker management system, fed from a Soundcraft GB2/16 mixer.

The GB2, in turn, takes playback feeds from a CD DJ, and other outboard dynamics include a Lexicon MX400 reverb/FX processor, BSS Opal FCS-966 EQ and dbx 1046 Quad Compressor/Limiter. Basao Investment has also specified an AKG wireless system in the shape of two channels of WMS 450 Vocal Set D5 True Diversity Wireless System.
All of this adds up to a fully optimized system, which has surpassed the expectations of the owner.
“He is delighted because out of his four clubs the sound quality in Canalis surpasses everywhere else,” states Do Thanh Danh.

AURALEX TAKES A BITE OUT OF ACOUSTICS AT THE BIG FISH GRILL

GLEN MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA – Auralex Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, recently ordered up some acoustics at the Big Fish Grill, a premier casual-dining seafood restaurant with locations in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Both feature Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles to help absorb additional sound energy throughout the busy, noisy restaurants, making speech intelligibility clearer.

In the Big Fish Grill’s original location in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were sporadically installed throughout the ceiling of the establishment. When it came time to open up a second location, the owners of restaurant chain called upon Steve Taylor of MusicPro Marketing, an independent sales and marketing firm representing music and professional audio/video equipment manufacturers, to acoustically treat the new location. As an Auralex rep, Taylor once again recommended Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles for the new space, but this time throughout the entire ceiling.

A total of 350 black T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were installed throughout the space. The black ceiling serves as an indiscrete blank canvas that does not distract from the nautical theme of the restaurant, as it features several large hanging fish, suspended from the ceiling.

Drop-tile ceiling tiles are traditionally used for visually blocking unsightly HVAC systems, wiring, insulation and other obstacles above the grid work. Unfortunately, most ceiling tiles do not meet the acoustical requirements for critical listening environments. Many of the commercially available ceiling tiles are fairly reflective at low, mid and high frequencies.

Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles are a full line of fiberglass ceiling tiles that offer great aesthetic qualities with absorption coefficients that are 20 to 45 percent higher than standard ceiling tiles. The two standard sizes are 23.875″ x 23.875″ and 23.875″ x 47.875″ for standard 2′x2′ or 2′x4′ grids. Each panel is 1″ thick and is supplied with a fabric scrim on the face of the panel. Standard colors are white and black, with custom colors available upon request.

Founded in 1997 by brothers Norman and Eric Sugrue, Delaware’s Big Fish Grill has become one of the premier spots for casual dining in the region. A unique blend of original recipes, must-have favorites and affordable prices have resulted in a dedicated following, one that has earned the restaurant numerous “Best Seafood at the Beach” awards by Delaware Today magazine. Due to the overwhelming success of the original, the Sugrue brothers opened the new Pennsylvania location earlier this year.

SGO Plans To Adopt Bright Technologies’ BrightClip To Enable Seamless Integration of Post System & Server

Reno, USA: Bright Technologies Inc., developer of advanced technology for shared media, has announced that SGO, provider of high-end solutions for the post-production and broadcast industries, has made an agreement to support the Company’s BrightClip® intelligent data recording technology on Mistika – SGO’s powerful post-production system. The integration enables customers to benefit from Mistika’s sophisticated feature-set combined with BrightDrive’s unique tools and functionalities for a robust post-production workflow.

Implementing BrightClip will enable Mistika to function seamlessly with BrightDrive media file server, the only file server developed specifically for media and entertainment. BrightClip provides superior disk recording and playback of media within the digital post-production environment by overcoming the need for data optimization. As media is moved between the different processes of a post-production workflow, BrightClip employs advanced, highly sophisticated technology to ensure content is organized logically on disks, therefore maximizing performance.

“We are delighted to open new avenues for our customers with support of BrightClip,” noted Miguel Angel Doncel, SGO’s CEO. “The advantages of Mistika, which is the most advanced and powerful DI post-production system presently available, combined with the functionality of BrightDrive will increase stability, productivity and allow faster project turn-around for our customers. The power and intelligence of BrightClip eliminates the need for defragmentation and keeps performance at a peak – a great benefit for our customers.”

Mistika is a flexible, high-end, post-production system capable of SD, HD, 2K, 4K, 5K, and stereoscopic 3D with real-time ARRI, RED Camera and other native data workflows. It seamlessly integrates timeline-based editing, conforming, infinite-layer compositing, color grading and image restoration all in one complete solution, with various toolsets working together in the timeline.

Mistika will work with all three versions of BrightDrive media file server that are all equally powerful but vary in size, modularity, and performance. BrightDrive Astella, the entry-level version, is a convenient and affordable all-in-one box that combines storage, metadata server plus all the benefits and features of BrightDrive. BrightDrive G2 and G2 Pro are high-performance servers that benefit all SAN set configurations as they are fully agnostic regarding storage, applications, and preferred fibre channel fabric.

“We are delighted that SGO will be implementing the BrightClip technology,” said Roger Beck, CTO, Bright Technologies, Inc. “The collaboration of SGO’s Mistika and BrightDrive media file server will furnish a shared media environment that offers creative tools while optimizing organization, performance and real-time speed. BrightClip was designed for environments where multiple processes are common. It eliminates the industry-wide problem of randomization by managing all media files created during the post process.”

SGO will join the growing list of manufacturers in the field supporting BrightClip.
