WHTM-TV Completes Upgrade to Local HD News with JVC ProHD

WAYNE, NJ – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced that WHTM-TV, the ABC affiliate that serves Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, Penn. (DMA #41), has purchased 15 GY-HM790U and six GY-HM750U ProHD cameras for its transition to local HD news production.

WHTM-TV director of photojournalism Doug Watson shows off one of the station’s new JVC ProHD camcorders, which have been used in the field since June.

Allbritton Communications Company, which is based in Arlington, Va., recently standardized on JVC ProHD cameras for studio and ENG work at WHTM-TV and five of its affiliated stations. The new cameras are part of an overall transition to local HD news production for all stations in the group.

In May, WHTM-TV began using its new JVC cameras in the studio in SD mode, but transitioned to HD in October. The studio’s three GY-HM790Us are connected via fiber optic cable, which eliminates the need for triax and additional cable bundles.

Each camera is equipped with a CopperHead ProHD KA-F790 fiber optic transceiver, a custom module built by Telecast Fiber Systems that provides a direct connection to the camcorder (no external cables). “The fiber package is compact and well integrated,” said Keith Blaisdell, WHTM-TV director of technology. “Telecast has worked very hard to deliver a robust and reliable fiber solution with the CopperHead.”

Photojournalists began using ProHD camcorders in the field in June, then transitioned from SD to HD in September. “The cameras are simply amazing in their video reproduction. The colors are rich and the resolution is really superb,” Blaisdell said. “Most of all, the total package is both operator and engineer friendly.”

Blaisell said JVC’s native file recording on non-proprietary SDHC cards has been a “perfect match” for the station’s Adobe Premiere NLE workflow. “We made the transition from legacy Digital Betacam tape to nonlinear workflow all at once,” he added. “JVC’s native file recording has worked seamlessly with Adobe Premiere to deliver stunning HD pictures.”

WHTM-TV photojournalist Eric Heisler displays one of the station’s new JVC ProHD camcorders.

The GY-HM750U delivers outstanding 1920×1080 images in a lightweight, shoulder-mount form factor. It records at selectable data rates up to 35 Mbps and can record HD footage in 720p, 1080p, and 1080i, as well as SD footage (480i). Building on the modular approach of the flagship GY-HM790U, it includes a 68-pin chassis connector that creates a clean, direct interface with various modules – no external cables needed. Plus, a new feature allows simultaneous recording to both SDHC cards for instant backup or client copy.

Headquartered in Wayne, New Jersey, JVC Professional Products Company is a division of JVC Americas Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of JVC Kenwood Corporation. JVC is a leading manufacturer and distributor of broadcast and professional video and audio equipment. Pro Audio Monitoring System Manufacturer Blue Sky Creates YouTube Video Aimed At Consumers & End-Users

Pro audio monitoring system manufacturer, Blue Sky, has maintained a core philosophy since its inception in 2001: to design and offer products that represent the highest ratio of performance-to-cost as well as a superior sound experience for its customers—from home enthusiasts to entertainment content creation professionals. Taking a cue from its in-depth website “Key Concepts” section, which addresses the company’s philosophy on topics ranging from the “Basics of Bass Management” to the “Truth About Subwoofers”, Blue Sky has created an in-depth video on its own YouTube channel to promote the company, its philosophy and the full line of components and systems it offers for home, personal, and professional studio use.

Targeted to the end-user and consumer, Blue Sky’s first foray into the world of video was produced by Andrew Wild of Wild Touch Productions. Just over 7 minutes, the video outlines the complete Blue Sky story and showcases the full-range professional monitoring components and lines—from the entry-level 2.1 desktop eXo2 to the mid- and large-scale music/film dubbing systems including MediaDesk, ProDesk, Sky System One and Big Blue. Additionally, you’ll hear raves and reviews from two of Blue Sky’s professional proponents, Chris Unthank, Director of Transfer Operations at Larson Studios and Audio Director/Gaming Sound Designer Greg Allen (formerly of UbiSoft and Electronic Arts).

“Our intention with this new video is essentially to reintroduce the brand to the customer through social media outlets including YouTube and Facebook,” said Blue Sky Vice President Chris Fichera. “Outside of the traditional sales and marketing arena, we want to speak directly to our end-users to reiterate what we are about technically, what makes the Blue Sky brand and products unique—including offering components designed to complement each other and seamless systems built around the bass management concept, and to offer a few raves from some of our hardest-working customers. That’s what we were after and I believe we achieved it.”

SnapAV Shelters Surveillance DVR Customers from Worldwide Hard Drive Shortage Caused by Thailand Flooding; Acquires Hard Drive Stockpile during Early Stages of Crisis; Vows “No Dealer Surcharges”

Charlotte, NC – November 29, 2011 – SnapAV, a manufacturer and exclusive source of more than 1,000 solutions for the custom and commercial AV channels in the US and Canada, has procured a stockpile of hard drives at premium costs in anticipation of the world-wide shortage caused by the recent Thailand flooding.

SnapAV uses the hard drives in its surveillance DVRs. According to SnapAV Marketing Vice President Adam Levy, even though the company paid prices higher than usual for the drives, it is committed to not imposing any surcharges on its DVRs.

“In bringing our surveillance line to market this past summer, we collaborated extensively with our Dealer Council to make certain that the products and pricing were where they (dealers) needed them to be. We will maintain that pricing so that dealers can carry on business as usual – unaffected by these fluctuations in the supply chain,” says Levy.

SnapAV’s expanding Wirepath surveillance line-up currently consists of 8 cameras (dome and bullet styles at 4 levels of performance), and 4 Digital Video Recorders (2 platforms: basic and advanced) with free supporting iPad, iPhone and Android Apps.

Christie’s EGG Concept Moves Simulation and Virtual Training Beyond the Edge

Christie® brings the ultimate in advanced visualization to I/ITSEC 2011, November 28 – December 1. Leveraging a powerful array of cutting-edge DLP and LED-based technology, the company utilizes its innovative engineering and integration expertise across multiple platforms and applications to deliver customized training and simulation systems from conceptual consultation through planning, integration and installation. The results are dynamic evolutions in technology that are reflected in such concepts as the EGG (Edgeless Graphics Geometry); a 4K resolution virtual sand table; a stereoscopic collimated display; a 60-120HZ high-speed comparison demonstration; and the Personal Immersive Environment (PIE) – all on display at the Christie booth.
“It’s all about providing customers with the latest innovation, with proven reliability,” remarked Zoran Veselic, vice president of Christie’s Visual Environments. “From the initial site survey to final installation and beyond, Christie integrates its visual projection systems with content from some of the industry’s most innovative companies, such as Flight Safety International, WorldViz, Aechelon Technology, MetaVR and CSC to provide groundbreaking, customized solutions, standardized turnkey systems, and everything in between.”
Among the various innovative concepts being demonstrated at the Christie Booth:
EGG – Edgeless Graphics Geometry
The Christie EGG concept is a portable, deployable solution that delivers virtual reality without the edges. It seamlessly fills the entire Field of View (FOV) using groundbreaking technology to deliver smooth, continuous graphics that respond to an intuitive 3D hand control, and features dual-use stereo and simulation. The front-projection “tunnel of light” is driven by eight Christie Mirage WU-L projectors, featuring Christie ArrayLoc™, Christie AutoCal™, and ChristieTwist™, with 3D content provided by WorldViz, an industry leader in interactive virtual reality solutions. The display will demonstrate tasks where depth judgment is required, such as helicopter landing and aerial refueling.
4K Resolution Virtual Sand Table
Proven to provide superior results, this ultra-high resolution sand table offers situational awareness combined with the interactivity of data in rich detail, allowing users to safely interact with the virtual content on screen – in this case, aerial photography mapped to simulated terrain. The result is a superior interactive experience that offers the added advantage of informative feedback and computer-based coaching during the exercise. The display uses a Christie D4K35 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution 3-chip DLP® projector delivering 32,500 ANSI lumens, powered by a Christie Spyder X20 video processor. The kiosks are context-specific and allow for individual contributions to the main 4K display.
Stereoscopic Collimated Display
Supporting growing interest in stereoscopic visuals for simulation and training tasks where depth of field is key, the Christie 3D stereo collimated display features an infinite focal plane, so that the eyes can focus closer to infinity – a much more realistic response in the simulated environment. Collimation with 3D projection results in a more realistic out the window display that provides accurate positional information for both near and distant objects. Display is powered by four Christie Mirage WU-L projectors and delivers high resolution and pixel density, with a single-viewpoint perspective. Stereoscopic collimated display applications would benefit boom operator training, driving simulators, and crane operation, as examples.
60 /120HZ High Speed Comparison
A unique, side-by-side demonstration of images projected at 120HZ versus 60HZ, illustrating the accuracy and clarity of higher update rates projection, in which Christie is recognized as the industry leader. Higher update rates offer sharper images with reduced motion artifacts. The display is powered by two dual-input Christie Matrix StIM LED projectors, with content and database provided by strategic partner MetaVR.
Personal Immersive Environment (PIE)
Composed of Christie FHD551-X HD LCD flat panels, the Christie PIE concept features a three-panel arrangement in portrait mode for a roughly 90 degree FOV. Additional flat panels are added to increase the FOV up to as much as 270 degrees. Easily flipped into landscape to suit the user’s needs, it is a low-cost faceted simulation display system that is perfect for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) training, as well as ship bridges and air traffic control.
Megapixel Display Wall
More is better, and this high-performance video wall, matched with a Christie Spyder X20 video processor proves it. Composed of a 4 by 8 array of award-winning Christie MicroTiles, this display features higher resolution and more vibrant colors than the standard display wall, making it ideal for situation rooms, as well as command and control or after-action review, where multi displays are needed for the management of information, such as satellite feeds, maps, live-camera feeds, graphics, and pre-recorded video. The Christie Spyder X20 manages and controls content in single or multiple displays, enabling the high resolution display of several images and source types, in real-time and programmed. The 20 megapixel bandwidth enables the Christie Spyder X20 to blend, window, mix and scale any source format, then routes the signal to any destination device or combination of display devices, with unprecedented flexibility and versatility, quickly and easily.
“Christie continues to push the envelope with progressive visual technology and integrated solutions to meet every customer’s needs and budget,” added Veselic. “We are a leader in our field because we have established a reputation as innovation and system-solutions experts. We bring together technologies from the widest range of areas to create new capabilities. Most importantly, we understand our customers’ problems and we solve them.”
Every Christie solution is backed by a full range of services and support provided in a collaborative environment that involves the customer every step of the way – and can support the customer after installation for the long-term.
Christie products can also be found at partner booths throughout I/ITSEC, including FlightSafety International with a stereoscopic collimated display, booth #1701; CSC with Christie FHD551-X tiled LCD flat panels, booth #2511; and the NTSA displays, found at the entrance to the showroom floor.
Christie is also proud to sponsor a teacher at I/ITSEC 2011 through the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA)’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. The goal of the program is to further education in the four STEM disciplines and instigate interest in teachers who can then pass on their new appreciation for modeling and simulation to their students.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Compact 32 Console Allows Students To Take Control At Fort Zumwalt West High School

O’FALLON, Missouri — In order to accommodate the musicals, concerts, dance recitals, talent shows and much more that it holds throughout the academic year, Fort Zumwalt West High School in Missouri recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 32 audio mixing console.

Tim Croghan, Auditorium Manager for the school, has been working with the Fort Zumwalt School District for 20 years and helped design and build the auditorium and sound system, and was looking to upgrade from the original analog sound board the school was using. Based on his positive experience with previous Soundcraft products, Croghan decided the Si Compact 32 was an ideal fit.

Croghan chose the Si Compact 32 for many reasons, including the console’s flexibility for the variety of school events. “We like to do production work, mix our own sound effects and record the chorus and bands for live CD’s. Another great use is to mix songs together for football games and sporting events. We simply have an endless amount of options,” he said.

Most of the time, however, the students are the ones operating the console. “It’s the perfect machine to teach to the students. When we got it, the kids were learning faster than I could and ended up teaching me a few things,” Croghan said with a laugh. The students, usually around 15 or 16 years old, enjoy working directly with the console and immediately seeing the results of their work. “It’s great because you don’t need a real in-depth concept of audio production; for a student, to be able to move the fader up and down, gives them the feeling of control we want them to have.”

When working on production for different events, Croghan mentioned that they use the Si Compact as a creative tool as well. “We can have sound effects called by the director just like a lighting effect. Everything that we do can be tied into the script, and we can create actual cues and microphone levels based on what the director wants,” he said.

“Everything about the board is perfect for what we need,” Croghan added. “It allows the kids to have the freedom to operate, and Soundcraft gives us the security of having a reliable console that doesn’t wear or break down. There are so many more outputs than we’re used to, and we are still exploring the ways that we can do more. Overall the board is so much cleaner and crisper.”

Croghan is thrilled the students have the chance to use such a high-end product in a school setting. During a recent Battle of the Bands event, Croghan was shocked to see the ability of the groups to manipulate the settings to find the sound they wanted to achieve, and how they were able to make it happen with very little help.

“Having the Si Compact allows our program to keep growing and expanding not only physically but through music education as well. The console gives us so much opportunity and we are all excited to see the students continue to explore and continue to thrive through the opportunities we give them,” Croghan summed up.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 20 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 12,000 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported sales of $3.8 billion for the twelve months ending September 30, 2011.
