Kordis Sound & Lighting Pumps up the Volume With HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers at Bijou Nightclub

Kordis Sound & Lighting upgraded the audio system at Bijou in Boston with a variety of JBL loudspeakers.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Kordis Sound & Lighting recently upgraded the audio system at Bijou, a high-end club in Boston, Massachusetts, with a variety of HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers, immediately transforming it into one of the most state-of-the-art clubs in the city. With two main floors of entertainment, Bijou wanted to create two different atmospheres for its customers. The top floor is a dance area with open spaces around the bar, drawing large crowds and partiers, while the bottom floor is a more relaxed, upscale lounge area, with various tables and couches for its guests.

The top floor system contains four HARMAN JBL Dance5 loudspeakers, two CBT4 loudspeakers, eight ASB7128 subwoofers, while the back room features four AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers with two SRX718S subwoofers, with four Control 26C ceiling speakers in each of the two restrooms on the floor. The DJ booth includes JBL’s EON515XT portable PA speakers with a PRX718S powered subwoofer.

Powering the top floor system are two Crown CTs 1200 amplifiers, two CTs 3000, two MA-9000i, four MA-12000i, two XTi 2000 and XTi 1000 amplifiers, plus one Crown 180A amplifier. The whole system was processed with a BSS BLU-160 signal processor.

The bottom floor features six JBL AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, 12 AC18/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers, two AC28/95 compact 2-way loudspeakers, as well as four Control 26C loudspeakers for each of the two restrooms on the floor. There are also 16 JBL ASB6112 subwoofers distributed around the floor and ground area with an AC28/95 loudspeaker used for the DJ booth with a PRX718S subwoofer.

Powering the system on the lower level are six Crown XTi 2000, four XTi 6000, and an XTi 1000 amplifiers, and a 180A amplifier for the restroom.

When deciding on which loudspeakers would fit the environment, Greg Kordis of Kordis Sound & Lighting cited JBL’s ease of installation, sound quality and affordability. “The Dance5’s have the nightclub levels that Bijou was looking for to turn it into a premier club,” Kordis said. “The ASB7128’s were chosen because they fit perfectly into the size of the cabinets that hide them, while still delivering quality sound. The horsepower on this system is like no other, it had the room bumping without even breaking a sweat.”

There were many challenges that arose during the installation. At first, there were difficulties with acoustics and having the sound trapped between walls and furniture. “We dealt with this by using an assortment of smaller, AC Series speakers rather than using a few larger ones. With low ceilings in a small space, this ended up working perfectly to create the atmosphere and feeling that Bijou wanted,” Kordis said.

“Bijou is very pleased with the new system, and they’re looking forward to a great future with JBL,” Kordis concluded. “The sound is excellent and keeps people dancing and partying all night long.”

London’s Soho Theatre Adds HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1™ Digital Live Sound Console to Its Cast of Performers

LONDON, United Kingdom – Located in the creative heart of London, the Soho Theatre is a showcase for drama, comedy and cabaret and encourages the efforts of new and developing writers. The Theatre has hosted British and international performers including Demetri Martin, John Leguizamo, Eugene Mirman, Stuart Silver, Richard Herring, and others and offers a wide range of new productions. Recently, the Soho Theatre upgraded its audio facilities with the installation of a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital live sound console—an improvement that has made life easier for the performers as well as the audio staff.

“We have been using the Soundcraft Vi1 for a couple of months now and personally I could not be more satisfied with it,” said Paolo Melis, Soho Theatre technician. “The large number of inputs and outputs on the desk has made it much easier to mix big projects. The Vistonics II™ illuminated color touchscreen interface is straightforward and simple to use, which is a big advantage when mixing a show and you need to have everything readily at hand in an instant.”

The Vi1 offers a host of features that are specifically designed for live sound use. “As a theatre technician, the Snapshot feature that lets you quickly create cue lists is the one I enjoy the most,” Melis noted. “It allows you to take instant ‘snapshots’ of all the console settings and compile cue lists for later recall just by pressing a single button. This one function alone is a tremendous time saver.

“We are also pleased by the high quality of the console’s built-in Lexicon® effects. They are much better than the effects that were available in our previous desk.”

The Vi1’s versatility allows Melis to deal flawlessly with live bands and does double duty as both a front of house and a monitor console. “It also works wonderfully in theatre sound design projects, where you need to be able to re-create a surround sound sonic environment, or simply route multiple outputs to speakers that are placed in various locations throughout a set,” Melis said. “The available matrix and aux busses make that easy to achieve.”

“The Vi1 has made operating our audio system a lot easier for us,” concluded Melis. “The performers can hear themselves better and perhaps most importantly it gives us the ability to deliver exceptional sound to the audience, night after night.”

Genelec Is the Go-To Sound System for Danny McDonald and His New York City Bars and Restaurants

— Longtime Genelec user McDonald opens The Growler Bites and Brews, which again features Genelec Active Monitors as its sound system —

NATICK, MA, November 17, 2011 — Danny McDonald, owner and co-owner of numerous bars, pubs and restaurants in Lower Manhattan, has opened a new establishment, The Growler Bites and Brews, that features a sound system comprising Genelec 8030A Bi-Amplified Monitors. McDonald has relied on the Genelec brand since installing his first system in 2000, and he is currently planning another large installation of the monitor speakers at New York’s historic Pier A.

The Growler Bites and Brews bar and restaurant is located in the Financial District on Stone Street, which is often referred to as Lower Manhattan’s restaurant row and is the location of several of McDonald’s other establishments. The new eatery is named after the traditional half-gallon jugs used to transport beer and sports a decidedly doggy theme, even offering a corral for its four-legged patrons while their owners chow down on organic hotdogs, microbrews and other fare. The Genelec speakers for this newest install were purchased from Guitar Center.

McDonald initially installed Genelec 1030A speakers eleven years ago at Puck Fair, an Irish pub on Lafayette Street. “There are 36 1030A’s there,” he reports, noting that he installed additional Genelec speakers at his oldest bar, Swift, at around the same time. “Then I built Ulysses Folk House in 2003; there are probably 40 in that spot, including the subs and speakers that we’ve added since. Then we put them in Harry’s Café and Harry’s Steak at One Hanover Square. Those are effectively two restaurants; there are 48 Genelec speakers in there. Next we built Gold Street – which is now called Harry’s Italian – in the Two Gold Street building, and put 40-odd in there.” Additional Genelec monitors are installed at the Vintry Wine & Whiskey bar, also on Stone Street, and the Bathtub Gin Speakeasy at 18th Street and Ninth Avenue.

For smaller rooms, such as the Vintry bar, a smaller speaker may be appropriate, he comments. “You can change the scale of the Genelec speakers to fit the restaurant environment, of course, and the sound will still be consistent. But I generally go with the medium range, the 8030A or the older 1030A, which is what I have in a lot of the places. They have punch and volume, and tremendous headroom. I always try and make it so that a customer is never further than eight feet from a Genelec speaker.”

McDonald’s next project will be the 30,000-plus-square-foot Pier A complex, a multi-million-dollar renovation project that will house a mix of casual and fine dining restaurants. “We’ll be using Genelecs there, too,” he says.

At some of the locations, in addition to handling background music, the Genelec monitors supplement a PA system on the nights that live bands are featured, and are also used during poetry readings and book launches. “Talk about surround sound!” says McDonald. “When you have that many speakers, you immerse the audience.”

As McDonald observes, the aggressive mid-range of many PA-type speakers forces people to talk louder, which can lead to the staff raising the music levels, and a vicious circle can set in. “I grew up bartending in the city of New York and I was perplexed by why places were using PA systems that were designed to overcome conversation. In a friendly bar or restaurant the last thing you want to feel is that aggression, and these Genelec studio monitors completely overcome that. It makes for a much more peaceful spot. So I was looking for systems that almost promoted conversation. I came up with a term ten years ago – I call it ‘choreographed conversation.’ These Genelecs have been able to promote that.”

Indeed, because Genelec monitors are self-powered, McDonald can quickly and easily tailor the environment in each establishment. “I had an elderly couple in the other day for a lobster dinner. They thought they were in a busy environment that they thought was too loud. I just turned off the Genelec at their table, and they decided to hang out. When you’re managing a room that’s a great thing to be able to do.”

As for maintenance, he continues, “It’s very, very easy when you can just Allen-key a speaker down off an omni-mount, unplug the XLR and, if you have speakers on standby, which I always do, correct a problem – which happens very rarely. I’ve got many speakers that are still operating ten years later, and that’s ten years of having never been turned off. It just amazes me.”

As it turns out, McDonald’s pioneering use of Genelec speakers in Manhattan’s eating and drinking establishments started something of a trend. “I sing Genelec’s praises all over the place. In fact, I know that there have been an awful lot of Genelecs sold on account of the fact that they’re in my places – they’re in half the other Irish pubs as well!”
