Vizrt Signs Broadcast Graphics Deal with a Korean TV Channel

The solution includes Viz Engine to power the channel’s HD content. Viz Artist will be driving dynamic 3D graphics design. Template management will be handled by Viz Content Pilot, which will also be the character generator (CG) for the control room. In the studio, Viz Video Wall ER will be displaying real time HD content. The Video Wall is made interactive through integration with Viz Anchor.

Dziekan, who has a 26-year record in the electronics industry, most recently was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Black Diamond Video in Point Richmond, California and Vice President of Sales and Service at Toshiba Display Systems in Simi Valley, California.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mark on board,” says High Resolution founder Mike Taylor. “One of the strategic priorities that I’ve focused on this year is company leadership. While I knew that we were fortunate to have great success with our three start-up companies, it was time to add to our team the skills of an executive who has had leading roles in major electronics companies to build and execute a plan to help us grow in the right way.

Dziekan sees his new post as a chance to use all of his past experience in general management, sales, marketing, product development and service. “I think the opportunity to work with the executive management team – Mike Taylor, Drew Taylor and Greg Byrnes – is what attracted me to the job. I’m looking forward to working closely with them in the expansion of these three great companies. I’m also eager to begin engagement with the entire team. I believe strongly in teamwork and fully expect that our efforts will be a productive collaboration.”

When Dziekan served as Assistant Vice President of New Business Development at Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc. in Wayne, New Jersey from 1991-1998, he was charged with creating and launching vertical commercial video divisions to offset losses experienced in the consumer electronic division of the company. He led the creation of seven different business units the most successful of which was the videowall division whose customers were in the rental and staging markets. In recognition of his efforts Dziekan received the ISP President’s Award for the “most innovative and profitable” business unit within Toshiba America’s holding companies.

Also at Toshiba, he led the first collaborative meeting between Apple and Toshiba, which eventually propelled Toshiba into the DVD hardware and content production development arena.

At NEC Home Electronics (now NEC Display Solutions) in Itasca, Illinois, Dziekan led the product development and marketing of 32 products in less than five years. He was one of the first four employees hired by the company.

Dziekan holds an M.B.A. from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Illinois plus a B.S. degree in Broadcast Electronics Technology and an A.A.S. in Electronic Equipment Service from Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan.

PERCUSSIONIST AND COMPOSER JOHN ARRUCCI USES THE METRIC HALO ULN-8 TO RECORD AND MIX METAPHORS

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NEW YORK – DECEMBER 2011: Although one is tempted to write baldly that John Arrucci is a percussionist just as, for example, Albert Einstein was a scientist, Arrucci’s modest nature would probably not tolerate the comparison. So… suffice it to say, Arrucci is very talented. His biography includes twenty-plus years on the faculty at Princeton University; study on three continents; mastery of Classical, Jazz, North Indian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, and other traditions; and a fine and very extensive list of composition and performance credits on high-profile albums, movies, and commercials. Arrucci’s latest passion is demonstrated in Metaphors, the first of three albums of his original compositions. Months of painstaking research led him to the Metric Halo ULN-8 preamp/converter/interface, on which the entire album was both recorded and mixed.

“I was updating my studio in preparation for Metaphors,” Arrucci said. “I needed preamps, AD converters, and a monitor controller. I was grateful for the help of three friends, each of whom is an expert engineer with a unique and strong opinion about audio.” Arrucci resolved to purchase only equipment upon which all three engineers could agree. “Two were Mac guys and the other was a PC guy,” he continued. “But that was just the start. They each had very different feelings and criteria.” To arrive at an unbiased decision, the group gathered together the contenders and then conducted a blind shootout. “The Metric Halo ULN-8 was the clear winner and earned each of their approvals,” he proclaimed.

One of the consulting engineers was Mike Cirile, who would also later record the initial session tracks for Metaphors. But before he did, Cirile gave Professor Arrucci some homework. “I am certainly not an engineer,” Arrucci asserted. “But I’m making a good-faith effort to become more knowledgeable about engineering. The Metric Halo ULN-8 is a deep piece of gear and it ships with some powerful routing and mixing software. Mike knew I wanted to really learn how to use it, so he gave me assignments to build [virtual] mixers in Metric Halo’s MIO Console. The assignments were complicated. I had to create big mixers that had all kinds of groups with ‘pre-fader-this’ and ‘post-fader-that.’ Although it was initially challenging, I learned a lot, and now I feel empowered.”

The first, Cirile-engineered sessions featured piano, bass, and, of course, drums. After that, Arrucci took over the engineering duties for his own overdubs, which included marimba, conga, vibraphone, alto flute, and a handful of other exotic instruments. “The ULN-8 was utterly solid,” he said. “I had had problems in the past with interfaces that didn’t want to play nicely with my Mac, but the ULN-8 was not only well-integrated in terms of the user-interface and stability, but there was also zero perceivable latency. It was nice to just use the box, without having to jury rig a work-around solution for latency on overdubs.”

He continued, “Everyone involved in the initial sessions commented about the strikingly beautiful sound on playback, before anything had been effected, processed or mixed. I felt gratified that my rigorous vetting process had paid off. The Metric Halo ULN-8 was really going to put the music, on which I’ve worked so hard in its best light.” Arrucci edited in Digital Performer and then used Digital Performer together with Metric Halo MIO Console to mix. A portion of the proceeds from album sales will go directly to the Rotary Foundation’s global fight to eradicate polio.

NATURAL HISTORY DP MARK SHELLEY USES FUJINON ZOOMS TO CAPTURE THE DRAMATIC RESCUE OF “OTTER 501”

Wayne, N.J. – The breathtaking Monterey Bay Coastline is the setting for a natural history film documenting the rescue of “Otter 501” – a sea otter pup found clinging to life on the beach after being separated from her mother.

Cameras follow Otter 501 as she’s taken to the Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) facility at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where a specially trained team will introduce a surrogate sea otter mother to raise the pup until she’s ready to be released back into the wild. She was called Otter 501 because she was the 501st sea otter admitted to SORAC. Through Otter 501’s ordeal and survival, viewers gain a better understanding of the threats sea otters face in the wild, including, great white sharks, and a host of diseases and toxins coming from human actions.

One mission of this feature film is to raise awareness of the plight of the Southern sea otter, a threatened species protected by the Endangered Species Act. Because of these protections, the “Otter 501” boats could not get very close to the marine mammals, making the long zoom lenses a crucial production asset.

Natural history Director of Photography (DP) Mark Shelley and his production crew used FUJINON 2/3” format Premier Series zoom lenses to capture rare footage of sea otters in their natural habitat off the California coast. They were also used to document Otter 501’s experience at SORAC and her triumphant return to the sea.

“Our FUJINON lenses did a phenomenal job in extreme conditions,” said Shelley, who is president of his own production company, Sea Studios. “When you’re capturing wildlife footage, you don’t have the luxury of setting up the perfect shot. To capture this footage, we were continually framing, zooming, and focusing the shots, trying to predict how and where the sea otters would swim. Our FUJINON zooms captured extremely sharp, crisp images, with no aberrations or flaws – despite the salt water, sea spray, and other challenges.”

The story of Otter 501 is seen through the eyes of a young woman named Katie who embarks on an adventure after college that takes her to Monterey where she discovers the sea otter pup stranded on the beach. In a departure from conventional wildlife documentaries, Katie conveys the story by speaking into the webcam on her laptop as she blogs about her experience.

Picture quality was of critical concern to the production team, which included DP Mark Shelley, Producer Josh Rosen, Director Bob Talbot, Cameraman Ernie Kovacs, and Editor Shirley Gutierrez, because the film will be projected on large theatrical screens. However, the storyline required that the super sharp digital HD footage be interspersed with Katie’s prosumer and webcam footage—an effect that DP Shelley said worked extremely well.

According to “Otter 501” Project Manager Arlene Burns, “A variety of video vignettes and short films were also produced as part of an extensive social media campaign that will help promote the movie. Among the videos that we hope will go viral are: a short piece showing how Katie learned to roll a kayak in the surf, and a behind the scenes look at the making of ‘Otter 501.’”

FUJINON lenses were used on Panasonic Varicam and Sony CineAlta cameras. The Varicam and F900 employed a FUJINON HA13x4.5 super-wide lens for underwater and top-side production. An extended-range, yet portable HA25x16.5 ENG-Style zoom was used for top-side production. A Sony F950 with a HA42x9.7 FUJINON ENG-Style zoom lens was used in a Cineflex gyro-stabilized housing that was extended from the side of a boat using a jib-arm.

Shelley added, “The customer support we received from Fujinon’s Western Manager Chuck Lee was invaluable. He is a true supporter of natural history production.”

Production, which began in January 2011, involved 16-hour days, six days a week over many months in all types of weather and lighting conditions.

“Otter 501” was funded by the National Science Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and investor Clint Jones. It is slated for release in first quarter 2012 to cinemas and aquariums nationwide.

Anton/Bauer Weathers The Cold, Powers Production Of Documentary Shot In Canadian Arctic

SHELTON, CT – While filming on location in sub-zero temperatures, it wasn’t long before Producer Joe Lloyd of Curbsyde Productions realized that in order to keep his gear running he would need a reliable power solution, able to withstand the brutal elements of northern Canada. The eight-episode documentary is part of a larger series entitled Reconnecting With Canada, that documents motorcycle enthusiasts as they tour the different regions of Canada. According to Canadian-born Lloyd, the series evolved from his desire to become acquainted with his homeland after exploring other countries. “After seeing a variety of other countries, I wanted to experience my own,” he explains. “Canada is very much a winter country; experiencing Canada means experiencing the snow, which provided an extreme environment for filming. We needed a power source that could endure in such conditions.”
