FUJINON HD ENG ZOOM CAPTURES BEAUTY OF UTAH HOME AND SCENERY FOR HGTV DREAM HOME 2012

Wayne, N.J. – HGTV Dream Home 2012 will feature a spectacular home just outside of Park City, Utah that one lucky viewer can win in next year’s sweepstakes. The show premieres immediately following the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade on HGTV January 2, 2012, at 1 p.m., with an encore presentation January 3.

HGTV Dream Home, which has kicked off the New Year on HGTV for over a decade, introduces a new fully furnished custom home built just for this special event. The beauty and detail of the HGTV Dream Home 2012 was captured in 1080/60i resolution using a FUJINON HA25x11.5BERD HD ENG telephoto lens on a Sony HDWF900 CineAlta HDCAM Camcorder.

“Since the house is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Provo River, we wanted to give viewers a true sense of its magnificent location and views,” said Rick Porterfield, director of studio and field operations for Scripps Networks Interactive, based in Knoxville, Tenn. “We were blown away by the high-quality images captured by this lens as well as its smooth, easy operation—a real asset whenever we needed to shoot handheld.”

Shot documentary-style, this one-hour show gives viewers a tour of the interior and exterior of the home including its great room, master sitting room, outdoor living room, and hot tub deck. It also features on-camera interviews with the architects, interior designers, landscapers, and builders who contributed to the effort.

Scripps’ Director/Cameraman Jason Grant positioned the camcorder on a tripod in the mountains to capture a variety of beauty shots of the entire vista and the river below, and then zoomed in close to the house. Porterfield noted, “We shot in beautiful, sunny natural light, as well as the home’s interior supplemented with LED and tungsten lighting.”

The FUJINON HA25X11.5BERD is a Premier Series lightweight, compact telephoto HD lens with an F-stop range of 2.0 to 2.8, and a focal length ranging from 11.5 to 288mm. Ideal for documentaries and other electronic field production, this lens offers FUJINON’s exclusive DigiPower zoom and focus servo system for fast, accurate zooming.

Scripps Networks Interactive also recently purchased two HA14x4.5BERM HD ENG Super Wide Angle lenses for other, upcoming network productions.

Audio Inc. Restores Vaudeville Theatre to Golden Age with Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Union County Performing Arts Center (UPAC) is housed in the restored Rahway (NJ) Theater. A classic vaudeville house, visitors experience live performances in a vintage 1928 vaudeville and silent movie palace. With just over 1,300 seats, the theatre, restored to its golden age, is one of the largest functioning centers for the performing arts in Union County. The theater is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places and now operates as a multi-purpose venue for the performing arts.

Audio Incorporated was recently hired for a complete redo of the monumental landmark consisting of a new NEXO and Yamaha audio system. “We had installed the theatre’s last sound system about 15 years ago, and all the equipment still functions to this day,” states Mike Sinclair, VP/Owner, Audio Incorporated. “The client was in receipt of additional funding and decided to update the sound system to current technology, so they came back to us to design/Install a new system.”

Sinclair said Audio Inc.’s biggest challenge was UPAC’s budget. “We had to choose very carefully when designing a system that would suit the artists they had been booking. Since we had worked with them for many years, they trusted our recommendation of a NEXO GEO S8 system, a couple of Yamaha Installation Series speakers, and a Yamaha M7CL-48ES digital audio console.” Sinclair said they re-purposed some of the older equipment to use in other positions.

The NEXO rig layout consists of seven GEO S805s and two GEO S830’s per side, and two CD12 Subs. “We added a Yamaha IS1218 per side on the stage to add a little more thump from 35 to 100Hz to the floor of the auditorium,” says Sinclair. “And, we added a Yamaha IF3115/95 speaker for use as a center channel speaker for the movie screen.” NEXO NX4x4 amps power all of the NEXO speakers, and Yamaha XP Series amplifiers power the Yamaha speakers.

The Union County Performing Arts Center hosts live performances that are educational, affordable, and responsive for the diverse interests of the county’s communities. With a large Asian and Hispanic population around the area, the facility is used for cultural and ethnic productions. Local promoters book Jazz, Blues, Classic Rock, and Jersey bands such as Southside Johnny as well as comedians like Joe Piscopo. UPAC also books The Great American Songbook artists—from songwriters to Broadway actors who perform solo shows.

“The client had noticed that the Yamaha M7CL digital console was a regular on the artist riders they had been receiving,” notes Sinclair. “We agreed that it was a good selection for the venue and suggested that the EtherSound version would be the best choice not only because of ease of installation, but also because we believe the ES version console has a warmer and richer sound.”

TC Furlong Helps Parkview’s Christian Church Transition to Digital with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6™ Console

ORLAND PARK, Illinois — In order to upgrade the Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park, Illinois, with a full digital sound system, TC Furlong, Inc. of Lake Forest, Illinois, recently supplied the church with a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital console.

Jeff Cech, General Manager at TC Furlong, assisted the church in the research process and believed the Vi6 would provide an easy transition to a digital console. “The learning curve is easy, and one of the best options for the budget,” stated Cech.

Barry Luchene, Director of Audio at the church, confirmed, “I don’t have much experience with different brands, but the network of people I travel and work with love Soundcraft, and suggested I check them out. After extensive research and thought, I agreed with Cech that the Vi6 would fit our needs the best.”

The console is used at front-of-house in the worship center, which seats around 2,000 people, and is used for four services per weekend. The services feature a modern worship style, including a full band.

The Vi6 allows the church to send mixes to external systems and to record feeds for online and off-location viewers. “Ninety percent of the work day to day is consistent, using about 40 inputs between the band and speakers. We just needed a console that would be reliable and easy to use, especially for our volunteers that are operating it,” Luchene said. “I love the larger surface space and how you don’t need to scroll through many layers to change settings. Everything is accessible and extremely easy to use. The sound quality is excellent and our expectations have been met perfectly.”

The install of the Vi6 is part of a million-dollar project to renovate the entire Parkview Christian Church facility. “We moved the FOH mix position from the balcony to the main floor. This presented challenges that were fixed easily with the Soundcraft stage boxes. We would not have been able to run the system as previously set up with all the wires and connections,” Luchene explained. “The Vi6 has given us many options and we look forward to completing the full renovation. Overall, everyone who has used the console is extremely happy and able to pick it up with little experience.”

WSET-TV Delivers Local HD News with JVC ProHD Cameras

WAYNE, NJ – WSET-TV, the ABC affiliate in Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va. (DMA #66), has transitioned to local HD news with new ProHD cameras from JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp. The station recently purchased eight GY-HM790Us and eight GY-HM750Us, which will be used for studio and ENG work.

Affiliated with Arlington, Va.-based Allbritton Communications Company, WSET-TV is one six Allbritton stations that is standardizing on JVC ProHD cameras for studio and ENG work. The new cameras are part of an overall transition to local HD news production for all stations in the group.

This summer, WSET-TV connected three GY-HM790U cameras via fiber optic cable in the studio, avoiding the need for triax and additional cable bundles. “It was a huge quality upgrade for us in our studio,” said K.C. Spiron, WSET-TV director of operations and engineering. “We get plenty of power to run the monitors we need and it works well.”

In September, WSET-TV starting shooting ENG footage exclusively with its new ProHD camcorders. Spiron said the shooters quickly embraced the use of non-proprietary SDHC media cards and JVC’s native file recording technology, which provides ready-to-edit footage for the station’s Adobe Premiere CS5.5 NLE workstations.

“They love the ease of use and the flexibility. Focus Assist is a big help,” Spiron added. “From an engineering perspective, the quality is very good and they are very easy to configure. We were still tape based until this switch, so this has vastly improved our workflow. We use the JVC ProHD Clip Manager [software] for logging as well.”

With a lightweight, shoulder-mount design, the GY-HM750U delivers outstanding 1920×1080 images and can record HD footage in 720p, 1080p, and 1080i, as well as SD footage (480i). Ideal for ENG news, sports, and other location shoots, it offers the industry’s fastest shoot-to-edit workflow by recording native HD or SD footage in ready-to-edit file formats on low-cost SDHC memory cards. Plus, a new feature allows simultaneous recording to both SDHC cards for instant backup or client copy.

Look Solutions’ Foggers are a Hit on the High Seas

Viper S

Viper S

Las Vegas-based Advanced Entertainment Services (AES) has been supplying cruise ships with special effects equipment for the last 20 years, including vessels for the Carnival, Holland America, Costa, Radisson and Crystal cruise lines. AES recently outfitted the Carnival Magic, the newest ship from Carnival Cruise Lines, with Viper S and Power-Tiny foggers from Look Solutions.

“I’ve seen an increase in Look Solutions’ presence on the last few ships we’ve done,” says AES’ Matt Dillingham. “The previous ship we supplied had five or six Tiny Foggers, some Power-Tinys, and a couple of Viper S foggers. Carnival Magic has six Viper S systems and two Power-Tinys.”

Several strong, compact Viper S foggers are used in the ship’s main theater. “Smoke is pumped through a customized delivery system that AES fabricates, to create a wall of smoke that images are projected on,” Dillingham explains. “Other Vipers, custom fitted with air-assist modules we’ve made, are used to create quick blasts of smoke coming out of the stage floor. They essentially create a CO2 jet effect without using CO2.”

He says he chooses Vipers for their “continuous steady output at a very low percentage – they’re the only machines with that capability that I’ve seen so far. I’ve found that all the other machines tend to “puff” the smoke out at less than 10 percent.”

The Power-Tiny units are mounted to flying set pieces in the main theater. “The Power Tinys are perfect for tight spots. These particular units are used to create the effect of smoke coming out of the stack of a locomotive set piece that flies in and out during the show,” he says.

“Everything has been working really well,” Dillingham reports. “I’m very happy with how conservative the units are with fluid – which was a big factor in their selection. Also, the foggers are extremely reliable. The Look machines seem to require less maintenance and repair than other units on the market.”

About Look Solutions

Based in Germany, Look Solutions manufactures high-performance fog machines, haze machines, battery-powered mini-foggers, low-foggers, accessories and fluids at reasonable prices.
