API 1608 INSTALLED AT CANYON HUT RECORDING STUDIO

LAUREL CANYON, CALIFORNIA – DECEMBER 2011: Constructed in rocker Alice Cooper’s former house in 2008, Canyon Hut Recording Studio has recently acquired and installed a fully analog, all-discrete API 1608 console. According to co-owner Tim Hutton, picking the right console was an easy decision once he heard the 1608.

“When making the decision to buy a console, I knew it had to feel ‘right’ in my gut,” said Hutton. I tested many and most of them were fairly linear. The 1608 was the only console that was un-darkened, incredibly warm and all embracing. Its design is flawless and I felt right at home when I first sat down and started tracking.”

Hutton is a songwriter, producer and bassist, and co-owns the Canyon Hut with his brother, Dash. The brothers were born into a musical family, as their father, Danny Hutton, was a founding member of classic rock band Three Dog Night. Touring as children with the group, Tim and Dash were able to interact with influential musicians such as Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Glen Campbell and America. After attending the Hamilton Music Academy and later touring with his band, the Telacasters, Tim started to record and produce tracks for some of his friends’ bands. The recording hobby later turned into a full-time gig, and Tim knew he needed to find a professional soundboard.

“Things really took off at that point,” he said. “I decided I needed ‘the best’ console. I was already very happy with my API 554s and 525s, so I decided to test the 1608. I was floored. It was exactly what I needed, wanted, and demanded to make the Canyon Hut one of the best studios in Los Angeles.”

Two famous studios were the inspiration for Canyon Hut’s “2001 meets the 1950s” design, with the control room situated so that it looks down into the live room, similar to Abbey Road and Motown. Canyon Hut’s live room also shares dimensions close to those of Motown. The studio offers an extensive microphone selection, a 1959 B3 Hammond organ and a 1929 Parlor grand piano. Canyon Hut’s past clients include Film School, TS and The Past Haunts, Three Dog Night and HB Surround Sound.

“I really want the world to know that we are a one-stop shop. We can engineer, produce, mix, play, sing, whatever the record needs, all with the best gear – the 1608.”

Advanced Audio Video Technologies Adds HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers to Bible Baptist Church Gymnasium

Advanced Audio Video Technologies provided a JBL VP Series loudspeaker system for the new gymnasium at the Bible Baptist Church in DeQuincy, Louisiana.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Providing pristine sound to the brand-new gymnasium that serves as a multi-purpose space at the Bible Baptist Church in DeQuincy, Louisiana, systems integrator Advanced Audio Video Technologies recently installed an audio system featuring HARMAN’s JBL VP Series loudspeakers. The Church was looking for concert-quality sound within the gymnasium, which hosts sporting events as well as concerts and community functions, and for top-level audio in its surrounding classrooms.

The 75-year-old Bible Baptist Church began renovations in 2007 and now contains a main sanctuary, multiple classrooms, a workout room and an upstairs café, which overlooks the new state-of-the-art gymnasium.

For sound, Advanced Audio Video Technologies installed a combination of three JBL VPSB7118DP-CN, two VP7212/64DP-CN, and one VP7315/64DP-CN powered loudspeakers in the gymnasium. Four JBL MRX512M loudspeakers were added for stage monitors. Two Crown XTi 1000 amplifiers power the stage monitors.

To provide sound in the new classrooms, seven pairs of JBL Control 2PS stereo speakers are used for AV presentations and lessons.

“The JBL VP series loudspeakers were chosen because they are self-powered, and provided an easy-to-install solution while providing great coverage,” stated Ethan Miller, Owner of Advanced Audio Video Technologies. “Early on in the design phase, it was requested that the audio system take up as little space as possible. Considering the price range and how much a non-powered speaker would be with the addition of amplifiers and cables, it just made sense. It also allowed everything to be hung, out of the way so it did not take up any space.”

Miller continued, “With the ability to use a digital snake with one CAT5 cable, it made the whole system digital and allowed for multiple inputs in different ways. The ability of the VP series and included DSP settings to set delays, limiters and crossovers the way the church wanted was a big selling point. We programmed the system and locked it so they would not have any issues.”

A variety of members with little to no audio background use the sound system on a daily basis for music, video, and learning. “Everything connects well to the audio system in the gym and nobody has any problems using it for their own needs,” said Miller. “It’s great to see everybody excited to use the system in different ways, and to expand the learning and involvement that is taking place at the church.”

The installation went smoothly according to Miller, due in large part to the system being approached from a design aspect instead of merely sales. “We understood the needs of the Church and were able to communicate with the customer to ensure that the system would be perfect for the Church,” Miller said. “HARMAN is easy to deal with and they have excellent support, and we only sell products that we trust with good support. The Church hired us with a clean slate and no requirements except to provide high-quality audio. With all the support of JBL and the Church I believe we accomplished the goal.”

Brainstorm Introduces SR-112 Time Code Distripalyzer and DCD-12 Word Clock Distributor

New Versions of Industrywide Favorites for Time Code and Clocking Solutions

Brainstorm Electronics, the world leader in time code and clocking solutions, has introduced two new versions of its industrywide favorites for time code and clocking solutions.

Brainstorm SR-112

Brainstorm’s new SR-112 Time Code Distripalyzer, replaces the industry standard SR-15+. It is a time code reader, distributor, reshaper, analyzer and generator all in a 1U rack mount device. The analyzer indicates format, frame rate, errors and video phase and outputs a comprehensive report; the 1×12 distributor reshapes the signal; the optional generator repairs drop-outs and generates new code. All SMPTE and EBU SD/HD rates are supported. Ethernet is included for reporting and to set parameters and update firmware.

Brainstorm DCD-12

The new single domain DCD-12 Word Clock Distributor/Generator is an excellent companion for the popular DCD-8 and includes the same exceptional jitter rejection. The DCD-12 can run as a master generator on internal crystal or locked to an external reference such as WC, Video Sync (HD & SD), AES31, S/PDIF, 10 MHz (GPS or Rubidium clock). The rate of the reference (input) is “learned” by the DCD-12 automatically while the output rate can be identical or set independently. Ethernet is included to monitor and set parameters and update firmware.

About Brainstorm
Brainstorm products deliver complete solutions for all sync requirements in the post- production, recording and broadcast environments. Designed for operations ranging from audio recording studios to large post-production houses and major broadcast facilities or remotes, Brainstorm offers the most comprehensive package for all clocking needs, providing versatility in the widest range of applications.

Clay Paky Sharpy Fixtures Shine at Univision’s Telecast of the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards

Latin Grammys

Latin Grammys

Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania, the exclusive lighting equipment supplier for the second consecutive year to the Latin Grammy Awards, recently provided the show with 50 Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures.

Latin music’s most prestigious awards telecast, the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards was telecast live on Univision Network on Nov. 10 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Since its debut on Univision entirely in Spanish in 2005, the show has consistently increased its ratings worldwide; it is also one of Univision’s highest rated shows as well as the most watched and highly regarded awards event by Hispanics.

Atomic’s vice president of operations Brett Puwalski, who has served as the show’s gaffer for the last five years, introduced lighting designer Carlos Colina to the Sharpy at the Premio Juventud awards show on Univision last summer. “He loved the tight beam and how bright it was for its small size,” says Puwalski. “Carlos has said he can never have enough of them.”

Colina deployed the Sharpys on trusses over the stage to create beam looks and also placed the fixtures around the audience to illuminate shots for commercial bumpers.

Sharpy is a 189W moving head with an unprecedented brightness usually achievable only with far greater wattages. Tipping the scales at just 16 kg, Sharpy produces a perfectly parallel, laser-like beam with an incredible output of 5,100 footcandles at 65 feet. Sharpy is also groundbreaking in the purity of its beam, which is sharply defined and free of any halo or discoloration around the edges. It offers an interchangeable color wheel with 14 fixed colors and an interchangeable gobo wheel with 17 fixed gobos, allowing users to change the shape of the beam and create an array of spectacular mid-air effects. Sharpy features new, high-performance electronics and can perform rapid and extensive pan-and-tilt movements.

Puwalski reports that Sharpys are “definitely the hot light to use right now. But people are finding them hard to come by since they’re constantly in use.” He notes that “Clay Paky pretty much innovated the beam light, and Sharpy is by far superior to similar fixtures on the market. For a fixture that small and lightweight, Sharpy performs like a lamp that’s way brighter.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re very pleased with the way our lights have been used for the Latin Grammy Awards. Atomic Lighting has always been a great customer and continues to find innovative applications for our lights.”

John Daniels and Darren Langer were the lighting directors for the Latin Grammy Awards; Alex Flores, Dave Hunkins and Mike Smallman the lighting technicians; and Felix Peralta and Kevin Lawson the lighting programmers.

A.C.T Lighting is the North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Headquartered in Seriate (Bergamo), Italy, Clay Paky SPA has a history of designing and manufacturing innovative professional show lighting. The company was founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Pasquale Quadri who anticipated the enormous impact the evolution of technology would have on the show and entertainment worlds.
