Rumor Has It: HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers Are a Hit at Philadelphia’s Newest Nightclub

NORTHRIDGE, California – It’s not a rumor: Philadelphia’s brand-new Rumor nightclub is a 10,000-square-foot venue featuring two dance floors, multiple oversized bars, private catering facilities and more—including a private VIP room called the Vault. Patrons can enjoy music from Rumor’s multiple sound systems, which include a variety of HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers powered by Crown amplifiers, and controlled with BSS processing and HiQnet London Architect™ software.

“We needed to provide sound for a number of spaces that differed greatly in their sound reinforcement requirements,” noted Ian Hoffer of Aurora Sound and Light Design, which specializes in nightclub system design. “The Vault is an elegant, high-end room with velvet walls. One of the bar areas has a VIP cove at the end that needed audio. There’s an oval-shaped dance room that presented some challenges, and even the bathroom hallway had its particular acoustical requirements.”

The system in the Vault includes four JBL AC28 compact 2-way loudspeakers and two ASB6115 15-inch subwoofers. “This combination gave us all the sound coverage we needed without overly intruding into the space,” said Hoffer. “We used two Crown Macro-Tech i Series MA-5000i amplifiers to drive this system. The velvet walls in The Vault were put there as part of the room décor, not for acoustic reasons, but they actually provide a great acoustic environment.”

The Lev Room is an oval shaped dance floor with a DJ booth at one end. “We found by installing two JBL AM7215 high-power, 15-inch, 2-way, full-range speakers and two ASB6125 dual-15-inch subs gave us powerful sound with plenty of impact, yet without creating any acoustic problems that might have occurred considering the room’s oval shape,” Hoffer noted. “The DJ booth is equipped with two SRX712M 2-way, 12-inch stage monitors, which happen to work perfectly in this application, along with an ASB6115 subwoofer. The combination of the SRX712M monitors and ASB6115 sub in the DJ booth work perfectly together.”

To avoid any dead spots in the club, Hoffer chose six JBL Control® Contractor 322CT in-ceiling speakers and two ASB6125 subwoofers in the VIP cove at the end of the 40-foot long bar, and four Control 47LP in-ceiling speakers in the bathroom hallway. “We installed the Control 47LP speakers there so people could still hear what was going on in the main rooms while they were in the hallway,” Hoffer added. “The bar is quite striking, by the way, because it’s illuminated and constantly changes colors.” A Crown CTs Series CTs 3000 amp powers the VIP cove and hallway speakers.

“We used the Control 47LP and 322C in-ceiling speakers because I feel you get a fuller sound from them than from competitive models,” stated Hoffer. “They were easy to install with no mounting issues at all.”

All the audio signals for Rumor’s sound system are handled by a BSS BLU-160 signal processor with digital audio bus capability, augmented by four BLU-BOB2 breakout box output expanders. Control is provided by the BSS London Architect programming interface and HARMAN HiQnet software. “I had never used the JBL ASB subwoofers before this project – and I was very impressed with them,” said Hoffer. “Thanks to the London Architect setup and configuration macro for the ASB subs, we were able to get a great sound from them.”

“Everyone at Rumor is happy with the project,” Hoffer concluded. “The Vault is the newest and most popular Thursday night venue in Philadelphia and Rumor has been getting nothing but rave reviews.”

PHOTOGRAPHER MATTHEW CHERRY ENLISTS ANTON/BAUER BATTERIES, CUSTOMER SERVICE IN PRODUCTION TEAM

GREENWICH, CT, JANUARY 5, 2012—For Matthew Cherry, owner and director of Matthew Cherry Studios, Anton/Bauer® and its DIONIC® 90 batteries have been a trusted part of his production crew for the last 10 years, whether he’s creating independent films or corporate videos. The DIONIC 90 from Anton/Bauer, a brand of The Vitec Group, and a leading global provider of premier batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries, allows Cherry to focus on his creative work without worrying about his power needs.

As a photographer and cinematographer, Cherry has worked in independent films and corporate video, as well as commercial photography—creating a mix of video and film and still photography—for more than 20 years. While much of his work is focused on fine arts, Cherry also produces commercial projects, including a recent promotional video for Anton/Bauer.

“Early on, I used batteries that were provided by camera manufacturers,” says Cherry. “However, a few good friends of mine who traveled the globe doing news production for major networks all said to me that you can have a lot of problems with many types of batteries—temperature, environmental issues and moisture. Making an investment with Anton/Bauer batteries, however, I haven’t had to deal with those issues.”
The DIONIC 90 was designed by Anton/Bauer to deliver consistently reliable performance even in the most challenging shooting environments on Earth. It offers a RealTime® display that continually updates the operator on how much run-time remains and on the state of the current charge. Weighing only 1.7 pounds, the DIONIC 90 can be transported without restriction under the IATA and DOT safety regulations (http://www.antonbauer.com/Support/TransportationInformation). The 91 WH battery can handle a maximum load of six amps, and offers runtimes ranging from six hours at 15 watts to 1.75 hours at 50 watts.

“The DIONIC 90 powers the camera all day,” says Cherry, who typically uses cameras such as the Canon L2 and Panasonic AG-HVX100 up through the VariCam. “I no longer have to think about batteries because I can look at the RealTime display to see the battery status and know exactly how much power is remaining.”

According to Cherry, working with Anton/Bauer for the last 10 years has helped eliminate the need for someone to manage recharging batteries during productions. “I typically bring three batteries per camera with me on a shoot, however I usually only need one,” he says. “I no longer have to plan a take around battery life. Whether you’re doing news or a narrative, how much is a lost shot worth if your battery dies?”

When it comes down to it, Cherry believes that if you have to think about your batteries, it’s a problem. “The very reason I rely on Anton/Bauer batteries is because I don’t have to think about them. If I do have a question, the global support team is readily available and able to help diagnose a problem.”

Xantech Brings High Technology To The Ricketts Hall Weight Room At The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis

Xantech WIC1200 Web Intelligent Controller and CWTC10 Wireless Touch Controllers create a reliable, scalable and intuitive control system for audio and video

CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA, January 5, 2012 — Xantech, a leader in the field of audio/video remote control and distribution, provided the core technology systems that enabled the “strength and conditioning” training room at United States Naval Academy’s Ricketts Hall to become an advanced state-of-the-art facility. As part of a technology upgrade, AV systems integrator DSL Sound of Hagerstown, Maryland, installed a Xantech control system consisting of the WIC1200 Web Intelligent Controller, two CWTC10 Wireless Touch Controllers, CSPLCD64G in-wall touch panels and a host of IPRS232 XtraLink IP modules.

The “strength and conditioning” training room at United States Naval Academy’s Ricketts Hall, featuring a recently updated AV system with control solutions from Xantech.

The network-based Xantech components provide full control over the weight rooms’ new AV systems, which include an HD Video Matrix system by FSR®, 16 55-inch LG® plasma monitors that make up five zones of video, and an extensive audio system throughout the facility, featuring the BiAmp® Nexia networked digital audio processor. Xantech’s IPRS232 units enable network control of the RS232-based LG monitors; user control is totally accessible via the Xantech CWTC10 10.4-inch WiFi tablets located in the weight room itself and in a control rack. Additionally, users can access the system remotely via iPad or remotely via a dedicated VPN network installed as part of the AV upgrade. This is all made possible through the rich feature set of the WIC1200.

Ricketts Hall is home to U.S.N.A.’s basketball, football and lacrosse team training offices, the locker room for the varsity football team, and the “strength and conditioning facility,” one of three on campus. The new Xantech-controlled audio and video system plays back content including customized weight training video programs, room and conditioning schedules, football and other sports videos, and other related content, stored on a custom computer system with RAID drives and six HDMI video outputs. Multiple screens over five video zones allow for multiple streams of content simultaneously, all controlled and distributed by the Xantech equipment.

“This is the first time we’ve deployed the Xantech systems, and they are working wonderfully, especially considering that no one’s ever put this advanced level of AV systems control into a weight room before,” comments Robert Musser, Sales & Engineering Specialist for DSL Sound. “We were looking for a control solution that was reliable, scalable and affordable, and the WIC1200 succeeded on all counts. It can be controlled via RS-232 wired connections using the IPRS232 XtraLink IP and via iPads remotely on the VPN and it can expand as the system needs to grow. The graphical user interface is especially good, and we were able to create a practical and intuitive control surface that’s easy to use. We definitely plan to use the Xantech equipment again in the future. It’s that good.”
