InfoComm will offer a webinar on January 10, 2012 to educate audio-visual professionals about the Department of Justice’s amendments to the American with Disabilities Act requirements for assistive listening systems and other AV systems.

Bluffdale, Utah, USA — Listen Technologies Corporation is pleased to announce the InfoComm webinar “Addressing the March ADA Deadline for AV Systems.”

In 2010 the Department of Justice amended the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for assistive listening and other AV systems. The new requirements go into full effect on March 12, 2012.

InfoComm has partnered with Listen Technologies and Technitect to present the details of what the new requirements will mean to the audio-visual industry. Timothy Cape, CTS-D a Principal Consultant at Technitect and Craig Paller, Wireless Listening Product Group Leader at Listen Technologies will deliver the presentation.

The webinar is scheduled for January 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. EST is free. Participants who are CTS holders can earn CTS renewal units. Advanced registration is required; go to: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/401952962

“This changes the specification for all audio systems, and assistive listening is now required for all public venues that offer sound reinforcement of any kind,” noted Craig Paller, Wireless Listening Product Group Leader at Listen Technologies. “This is not a product webinar in any respect. It’s about the changes in legislation and what that means to our AV community.”

Pass Labs Launches New Xs Amplifier Series

Three Years of Refinements Help the Multi-Chassis Xs-300 and Xs–150 Amps, First in the Series, Sound Subjectively as Beautifully as They Measure

INTERNATIONAL CES 2012, LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012 — Pass Labs introduces the Xs-300 and Xs–150 Amplifiers, first entries in a new generation of Xs Series amplifiers, at CES 2012, beginning here today.

The new amps are designed to measure well objectively and, equally important, sound subjectively as well as they measure, an exacting engineering challenge that has led to a multitude of ear-pleasing refinements. Pass Labs’ new enhancements further narrow the gap between what scientific measurements report about amplifier performance and what the human ear subjectively hears.

The Xs-300 and Xs–150 Amplifiers are monoblock models delivering 300 and 150 watts, respectively. Both models employ double-stacked chassis, with the power supply and current source in one chassis and the input and main output stage in the other chassis. The separate power supplies enable a bounty of benefits, including lower electromagnetic noise, twice as much storage capacitance as earlier Pass Labs amps, banks of high-speed/soft-recovery rectifiers, improved high-frequency noise filters, bigger and better transformers, improved passive decoupling, massive heat sinks, and lower standby currents.

The Xs Series has been three years in development. The first year, Pass Labs settled on the power supply and physical package. The second year, Pass Labs finalized the output stage and front end. The third year, the company refined the front end and the biasing of the output stage.

In the process, Pass Labs applied a number of new refinements, including adjusting the values for push-pull Class A biasing and the amount of single-ended bias in the output stage. It also significantly increased the single-ended bias in the output stage over earlier Pass Labs amplifiers. All three changes delivered major improvements. Pass Labs also installed sturdy output stage transistors, with a combined capacity well over 10 KW, and massive heat sink assemblies capable of 2 KW all day long.

The Xs-300 and Xs–150 Amplifiers will be available 1st Quarter 2012 from authorized Pass Labs dealers at suggested prices of $85,000 and $65,000 per pair (U.S. MSRP), respectively.

Look Solutions’ Foggers and Hazers Fill the Bill for Roger George Rentals’ Motion Picture and TV Customers

Roger George Rentals, the SFX rentals and expendables company in Van Nuys, California owned by Oscar-winning special effects/pyrotechnics veteran Thaine Morris, can’t keep Look Solutions’ foggers and hazers on the shelf.

“We have 100 of them out in other people’s hands, on movie sets and episodic television productions,” says Thaine. “They’re great products and very durable. We have almost no problems with them and never see them coming back for repair.”

Roger George has rented Look Solutions foggers and hazers to director Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar;” the upcoming “Lincoln” from Steven Spielberg and “Django Unchained” from Quentin Tarantino; the superhero “Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the “Star Trek” sequel and “Gangster Squad” due out next year; Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” “R.I.P.D” and “One Shot” slated for release in 2013.

The company has also provided Look Solutions’ products to TV’s popular “Castle,” “House,” “Glee,” “Bones,” and “Mike & Molly” as well as HBO’s “True Blood,” Showtime’s “Dexter,” and the new series “American Horror Story” and “Grimm.”

“Look Solutions’ Viper NT foggers have become the standard for fog machines,” notes Elizabeth Morris. “Everyone uses them. Other fog machines that produce the same amount of fog are heavier and harder to handle.”

Thaine says the TINY FX unit is “great for gags – like a guy who gets blown up and runs away smoking. We can just put a TINY in his pocket instead of using toxic, smelly AB smoke. Creating a smoking engine was very difficult before and required special heavy equipment but we can use a radio-controlled TINY now. When we wanted to show a smoking barbecue we used to have to start a charcoal fire, dump mineral oil on it and stand by with a fire extinguisher. Now we use a TINY and there’s no worrying about someone burning himself: It’s ready when you need it and gone when you’re done.”

According to Elizabeth, the film “Burlesque” was a heavy user of Look Solutions’ Unique2 hazers. “The bar room scene was very hazy; shooting HD requires more fog and haze than they’d need with film – the HD cameras seem to be able to see through it better so you need more. I think ‘Burlesque’ consumed fluid in the 100-gallon range.”

“We deal in a lot of different equipment and sell a lot more Look Solutions’ gear than any other,” notes Thaine. “It’s very, very stable and fills the bill for our customers.”

About Look Solutions

Based in Germany, Look Solutions manufactures high-performance fog machines, haze machines, battery-powered mini-foggers, low-foggers, accessories and fluids at reasonable prices. Look Solutions USA, located in western Maryland, serves customers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Firehouse Productions Provides Arctic Monkeys With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6™ For Live Sound Monitor Control

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — For the Arctic Monkeys’ current world tour, Firehouse Productions has supplied a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital audio console for monitor mixing.

The Arctic Monkeys, an English indie rock band formed in 2002, has released four studio albums. The band is known as one of the first groups to build a fan base and attention through social media, using new ways of promotion and marketing to help drive its rise to stardom. The band’s debut album titled Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006, became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, selling 363,735 copies in the first week.

Tim Fraleigh, Audio Technician at Firehouse Productions, believed the Vi6 would be the best console for the job given its ease of operation and intuitive user interface. “It’s an incredibly easy desk to work with,” stated Fraleigh. “It’s simple and the touchscreens make the adjustment of settings a straightforward process. Soundcraft has always been reliable. Knowing the type of response that the board will give is important, plus it’s incredibly user-friendly and with the confidence we have in HARMAN and Soundcraft, I knew it would do the job and everyone would be satisfied.”

Monitor engineer Will Doyle, who uses the desk to run stereo ears, wedges and side fills, said the Vi6 handles marvelously. “Even though I’ve been using a digital desk for some time now, I think one of my favorite things about the Vi6 is how much it feels like an analog desk. It’s very easy to see at a glance exactly what all the channels on each layer are doing. With the touchscreen, everything is at your fingertips,” stated Doyle.

“The Vi6 is great for multi-tasking as well,” Doyle continued. “With the fast assign function it means you can always have the most important mix or mixes on the encoders. This makes it easier to work with faders and still be able to react quickly to any onstage requests. Having the multiple touchscreens means that I can work on different channels at the same time. It may not sound like a big deal but it makes everything convenient and quick.”

According to Doyle, the user layers are very simple to set up and add loads of flexibility. “Doing monitors for a 4-piece rock band means I don’t have to stretch the capabilities of the desk too far, but I have started incorporating VCAs into my user layer,” he said. “So as well as being able to hide away all the extraneous channels, I only have to use one fader to turn up the drums. The great thing is that there’s a set of discrete VCAs for every output, so if you happened to be mixing a more complicated band, you could use up to 16 VCAs to control each mix instead of having to jump between layers to get to all 96 channels—more time looking at the stage instead of your desk. I mostly use them for keeping the balance between the vocals and their reverbs the same.”

For Doyle and the Arctic Monkeys, monitoring has run smoothly thanks to Soundcraft and the Vi6’s ease of use. “The board has plenty of functions and capability for what we need and makes our job easier everyday,” Doyle summed up.

EAW® Loudspeakers Expand Existing EAW System at Emerson College’s Cutler Majestic Theatre

Boston Light & Sound revisited the space to address architectural changes by adding new EAW components

When they were finished, the components, old and new, matched seamlessly into a completely integrated system for total house coverage

Whitinsville, MA, USA, January 5, 2012 – The Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College is a historic landmark in the heart of Boston’s theatre district. Built as an opera house in 1903, this intimate venue serves student, community and professional theatrical productions. In 1999, AV systems integrator Boston Light & Sound was brought in to design and install a PA system utilizing a pair of EAW® MQ1364 MF/HF Array Loudspeakers on either side of an MQTD412 LF Array Loudspeaker with a single MQ1394 below and JF290z’s for L&R Orchestra fill. At the time, with the theater’s balcony closed, the state-of-the-art system provided complete coverage of the venue’s main-floor and mezzanine seating areas. In 2003, when the balcony was reopened after extensive reconstruction as part of the theater’s 100th anniversary, additional EAW AS690e fill speakers were added for balcony coverage, based on a consultant’s design.

Over the summer of 2011, it was decided that the balcony required additional PA coverage, primarily due to the less than optimal architecturally dictated location of the balcony fills. To accomplish that, Boston Light & Sound was brought back in to replace the center cluster with 10 EAW NTL720 compact, self-powered, 3-way line array loudspeaker modules. These provide full coverage of the balcony’s first several rows, as well as the rest of the venue. A pair of EAW SB1001 Subwoofers extends low frequency response when required. In the process of adjusting the Cutler Majestic Theatre’s sound needs as it progressed through its evolution, EAW showed how even several generations of its components spanning as much as a dozen years were still able to create a single, integrated system that served the theater’s needs exactly.

“It’s pretty amazing when you think about it,” says Mark Rowinski, Systems Design Engineer at Boston Light & Sound. “All the components matched perfectly,” noting that when they did final measurements of the system, every point in the room was within +/-2dB of each other, underscoring the system’s consistency. “The entire EAW system performs very, very well and the coverage is completely even throughout the house. And it sounds fantastic. It’s got that EAW sound that sounded great in 1999 and still sounds great today.”
