grandMA Series2 and Clay Paky Sharpys Go to the Latin Grammy Awards

Latin Grammys

Latin Grammys

grandMA and Clay Paky Sharpy lighting fixtures took on a Spanish accent for the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards telecast live on the Univision Network on Nov. 10 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. A.C.T Lighting is the distributor of grandMA and Clay Paky products in North America.

Lititz, Pennsylvania-based Atomic Lighting provided three grandMA2 light systems with fader wings to control the show’s lighting and another two full-size grandMA2 consoles to run 16 universes of Artnet for the video content. Fifty Clay Paky Sharpys formed part of the lighting inventory.

Since its debut on Univision entirely in Spanish in 2005, the Latin Grammy Awards show has consistently increased its ratings worldwide; it is also one of Univision’s highest rated shows as well as the most watched and highly regarded awards event by Hispanics.

Atomic’s vice president of operations Brett Puwalski, who has served as the show’s gaffer for the last five years, reports that the grandMAs performed “solidly – as always.” For video programmer Laura Frank, the Latin Grammy Awards marked her first big show with the grandMA2. It was also the first show that Atomic did with the grandMA2 series. “Everything went very well, and Laura loved them,” says Puwalski. “This was a very video-driven show with video projection, LEDs and VersaTubes.”

Lighting programmers Felix Peralta and Kevin Lawson had used grandMA2s on “Sing Off” and “America’s Best Dance Crew,” but the Latin Grammys were their first experience with the system’s new software release. “Sometimes software upgrades come with bugs and issues,” notes Puwalski. “But there were no complaints about the new software. We hope to stick with the upgraded software whenever possible since everybody loves its added features.”

Puwalski introduced lighting designer Carlos Colina to Clay Paky Sharpys at the Premio Juventud awards show on Univision last summer and “he loved the tight beam and how bright it was for its small size,” he says. So when it came time for the Latin Grammy Awards Colina decided to deploy Sharpys on trusses over the stage to create beam looks and place the fixtures around the audience to illuminate shots for commercial bumpers.

According to Puwalski, both the grandMAs and Sharpys are “definitely popular with our customers. People are finding the Sharpys hard to come by since they’re constantly in use.”

John Daniels and Darren Langer were the lighting directors for the Latin Grammy Awards; Alex Flores, Dave Hunkins and Mike Smallman the lighting technicians; and Jorge Dominguez the scenic designer.

Visual Unity Introduces Middle East Broadcasters To Its Award-Winning vuMedia™ Multiscreen Platform

Leading Broadcast and Multiscreen System Integrator Visual Unity will use CABSAT 2012 (Stand S2.C20) to highlight its integrated content and delivery framework that allows broadcasters to effectively deliver and monetise content in the multiscreen environment.

With more than 20 years’ experience of Broadcast and Multiscreen System Integration including the design and delivery of turnkey TV systems, broadcast-IT convergent and multiscreen solutions for global brands, Visual Unity helps broadcasters bridge the gap between traditional broadcast and new media systems, enabling them to integrate web and mobile delivery into existing workflows and improve operational performance.

Visual Unity’s President Tomas Petru says: “The Middle East presents a unique set of challenges for the delivery and consumption of multiscreen content. Audiences are culturally diverse, with a large international migrant population and young tech-savvy demographic; this mix is reflected in the demand for a wide range of content, particularly across mobile devices.”

Petru adds that whilst advanced “last-mile” services are well established at a local level across the Middle East, “multiscreen” content is for the most part distributed through bottlenecks (often hosted in the USA) that severely restrict the user experience. This has left regional broadcasters in an untenable position, with poor delivery hindering opportunities for revenue generation.

He explains: “Broadcasters need to adapt their business models and culture to meet the demands of the emerging social viewer by engaging and interacting with audiences and delivering real value in real time – whether the viewer is mobile or at home in front of the TV set. Visual Unity is well placed to help them become more agile and competitive, thanks to our proven experience in broadcast integration and vuMediaTM, our award-winning integrated content management and delivery platform.”

At CABSAT, Visual Unity will demonstrate how vuMediaTM helps manage, automate and monitor multiscreen delivery. Through four highly robust and scalable modules, it delivers a cutting-edge web-based and mobile viewing experience, comprehensive VOD services and secure distribution – all of which can be seamlessly deployed into existing workflows:
• vuChannelTM for web-based and mobile viewing, fully integrated into the station backend;
• vuDemandTM for comprehensive VOD services, including billing & reporting;
• vuMobileTM for mobile content and applications;
• vuNetTM providing secure content control over distribution and user-experience management.

“We are excited to showcase the full capabilities of the vuMedia™ platform, particularly the vuMobile™ module, which provides mobile-optimised content and enhanced video, with application and interactive marketing tools, to effectively engage mobile audiences,” says Visual Unity’s CEO Jakub Kabourek.

Especially relevant to Middle East broadcasters is vuNetTM, which provides a robust and secure infrastructure to effectively ingest, manage, monetise and distribute assets. vuNet™ connects seamlessly with global CDNs and cloud-based services. However, in regions such as the Middle East where cloud access is unavailable, expensive or may be unfavourable to the content owner, clients can benefit from Visual Unity’s own Content Delivery Network (CDN), with a current installed capacity of more than 100 GBps and almost 400 TB storage space. Capable of supporting tens of thousands of concurrent users, the CDN provides coverage across Europe and Central Europe, including Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania and Visual Unity has recently established pops in Dubai, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Kabourek concludes: “With pops now across the Middle East, Visual Unity’s CDN is effectively supporting the development of more regionally executed services, delivering a much-improved user experience and securing the future of multiscreen broadcasting in the region.”

Visual Unity will be showcasing its leading integration capabilities and demonstrating the vuMediaTM platform at CABSAT 2012, 28-February- 1 March, Sheikh Saeed Hall 1, Stand S1.C20. For further information visit www.visualunity.com

Thailand’s Education Ministry Builds End-to-End IPTV Communications Network Based on Haivision

Haivision’s Advanced Furnace(TM) IP System and Barracuda(TM) H.264 Encoders Drive Controlled and Secure Video Access to Link Headquarters With Educators Throughout the Country

MONTREAL and CHICAGO — Jan. 10, 2012 — Haivision Network Video today announced that Thailand’s Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has chosen Haivision’s advanced Furnace(TM) IP video system and Barracuda(TM) H.264 encoders to create an end-to-end IPTV solution linking the agency’s headquarters with educators throughout the country. The Haivision infrastructure enables OBEC to maintain a reliable, real-time video link with geographically dispersed officers and staff, facilitating communications throughout the organization and supporting OBEC’s mission to serve as the education hub for Thailand.

“In order to meet our growing communications requirements, we sought a reliable end-to-end IPTV solution to link all of our facilities so that they could better share expertise and ensure equal development and access across all regions. With Haivision, we’ve been able to take our internal communications to the next level — and we rely on Haivision’s complete IPTV solution to drive controlled and secure video across our entire network,” said OBEC’s Ajarn Mana. “The Barracuda encoder delivers high-performance H.264 encoding in a uniquely compact form factor, and its ability to deliver multiple streams at different resolutions and bitrates to multiple destinations makes it a perfect fit within Haivision’s Furnace end-to-end H.264 IP video solution.”

Fueled by Barracuda H.264 encoders, the advanced Furnace IP video system delivers media to Haivision Stingray(TM) set-top boxes and InStream(TM) players (available on any desktop), enabling OBEC to share live video throughout its Bangkok facilities. The IP video network serves multiple purposes on a daily basis; for instance, live broadcast meetings from headquarters to the education office area notify teachers of new policies and keep all staff informed of general announcements. The system has also proved invaluable for distance learning purposes and for officer and staff training by providing a high-quality live video link from headquarters to PCs for e-training. With the first phase in place, OBEC is now implementing the second phase of the network to enable recording, playback, and WAN streaming.

“As Thailand’s central education authority responsible for teachers and schools across the nation, OBEC has recognized the need for communications and media accessibility across its organization and throughout the country,” said Charles Dobson, senior director, international business development, Haivision Network Video. “The Furnace IP video distribution system provides end-to-end protection of both internal and broadcast content, from the encoders within the OBEC headquarters all the way to the viewers throughout regional facilities.”

Broadcast Pix Granite Anchors New Production Van for Riverside Government Television

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that Riverside Government Television (GTV), the public, educational, and government (PEG) channel for the City of Riverside, Calif., has anchored its new production van with a Granite™ 500 integrated live video production system. While the van was not ready for the beginning of the 2011 football season, GTV produced coverage of five high school football games during the final three weeks of the season – and has already covered one University of California Riverside basketball game live, with more planned in the near future.

Scott Brosious, senior communications technician, was already familiar with Broadcast Pix, as GTV has a Slate™ 1000 in its control room in City Hall for city council meetings. “We’ve never had a problem with it,” he said, “but what really sold me for the van was Rapid CG.”

An option for Granite and Slate systems, Fluent™ Rapid CG streamlines the creation of data-intensive CG graphics for sports and other fast-moving productions. It automatically integrates databases, RSS feeds, and custom actions like scorekeeping into templates, so specific fields are automatically updated within the templates. The result is customized graphics using Granite’s built-in Inscriber GS CG that are produced faster, with significantly less effort and fewer chances of operator error.

“Rapid CG works great. We’re using graphics more than we ever have before, because we couldn’t change them fast enough manually,” Brosious explained. “We drop in logos from the schools, so there’s no need to recreate graphics from scratch. And we can change info on the fly.”

Based in City Hall, GTV has one full-time and two part-time employees, along with a full-time department manager, to handle the production of local government meetings and a variety of local programs. Contractors are hired to assist in the production of sporting events and other multi-camera productions. Because GTV does not have a studio, all shoots beyond city council meetings are shot in locations across the community.

Multi-camera shoots were very limited before GTV had a production van, because there was no remote production unit in place. Instead, the team would edit footage from all its cameras to create a finished program. Now, if a shoot uses more than one camera, the production van is deployed to produce a compelling live-to-tape production.

According to Brosious, most of the season’s football games were over by 10 p.m., and coverage was broadcast by 11:30 p.m. on the city’s cable channel and online at www.watchriverside.com. The station has a LiveU video-over-cellular transmitter that allows live coverage of other events, such as last November’s UC Riverside basketball game and the Riverside Festival of Lights activities. A MotoSAT satellite transmitter was also installed in December, which can send a signal to a dedicated receive dish at the city’s emergency operations center.

Purchased from Frontline Communications, GTV’s production van was delivered in September, and systems integrator Rich Rosensweig of Vidiflo in Long Beach, Calif., helped the GTV team install all the equipment. The Granite 500 was purchased through Snader and Associates, a California-based independent reseller and systems integrator. Four JVC ProHD cameras capture the action, and programs are recorded to two AJA Ki Pro recorders (one records Program Out and the other records a clean feed). Back at City Hall, programs are down-converted to SD for broadcast.

With three workstations packed in the production van, Brosious did not have the option of installing a large production switcher. The 1 M/E Granite 500 control panel’s compact footprint provides GTV with a tactile control surface to switch up to 11 HD/SD-SDI inputs. It also provides comprehensive monitoring of video and files, as well as complete control over Fluent workflow tools including the built-in clip store, which is used for the intro and closing credits during game coverage. “It’s a pretty tight space,” Brosious admitted. “There’s not much room for a bigger panel. For us, it works well. The quality is outstanding.”

About Broadcast Pix Broadcast Pix is the leader in integrated live video production systems. Its systems provide the best control surface for combining cameras, clips and graphics to create compelling live video. These surfaces enable total control of the built-in multi-format switcher, clip store, graphics system with a Harris or Chyron CG, and device controls. Its Fluent™ workflow enables files and data to be easily incorporated from other parts of the studio. Broadcast Pix systems are a fraction of the cost of a conventional control room to buy, staff and operate. System range from small systems controlled by a touch-screen to sophisticated 2 M/E control panels. Customers include leading broadcast, corporate, education, religious, government, webcast, entertainment and mobile studios in more than 90 countries. Learn more at www.broadcastpix.com.

Aaudio Imports Releases the KRAKEN, New Reference-Level Power Cord by Stage III Concepts

Handmade Audiophile-Grade Cable with Large-Gauge Silver Ribbon Conductors Helps Music Breathe with Effortless Clarity and Resolution

INTERNATIONAL CES 2012, LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012

KRAKEN Power Cords

— Aaudio Imports, a leading supplier of world-class high-end audio products, introduces the A.S.P. KRAKEN Reference Power Cord by Stage III Concepts, a world-class innovator in audio cable design, at CES 2012.

Stage III’s KRAKEN Power Cords are handmade masterpieces of connectivity, representing the culmination of 16 years of research, materials evaluation, testing, and listener feedback. The audiophile-grade cable uses silver ribbon conductors with air dielectrics to provide audio systems with remarkable, undeniable improvements in sonic performance.

Delivering a breakthrough in AC delivery, KRAKEN power cords impart to musical reproduction a sensation of rock-solid image stability and natural flow. As if powered by limitless energy, sounds breathe with effortless clarity and absolute resolution.

Named after a mythological sea monster of gigantic proportions, KRAKEN cables can be used with all types of audio and video equipment. They enhance the performance of a wide range of audio components, regardless of power requirements, while offering an unprecedented level of precision and control.

In developing the KRAKEN, Stage III created entirely new palladium/silver AeroStrand Ultra™ ribbon conductors. The KRAKEN’s six slow-extruded AeroStrands are larger gauge than usual, cryogenically tempered, and so efficient they can carry more than 40 amperes without the bulk and stiffness of more traditional wires with equal current capacity. The high-efficiency AeroStrands also offer lower resistance and better heat dissipation than traditional stranded cords.

KRAKEN cords also employ silver ground wires individually shielded with silver-plated braids, impenetrable radiation-proof shielding using an exclusive High Density Alloy foil, air dielectrics with FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) Teflon® air-tubes, and high levels of mechanical damping. The unique wire geometry features multi-layer construction with a silica/ceramic/ferrite mechanical damping and shielding layer.

The KRAKEN’s custom carbon fiber plug housings, also handmade and polymer-filled, help eliminate external vibrations. Exclusive Hyperion Ceramic plugs use a palladium-plated silver/copper alloy for their electrical contacts. The result is definition, clarity and a noise floor never thought possible, even without the use of a dedicated power conditioner.

Stage III’s KRAKEN Power Cords are available now from Aaudio Imports, among other select dealers, at a suggested price of $8,400 for 1.5 meters with each additional 0.5 meter costing $2,800. Discounts are available on a sliding scale ranging from 6 to 24 percent, depending on amount. They can be seen with other outstanding products represented by Aaudio Imports at the Venetian Hotel, Suites 30-121 and 30-122, during CES.

First Lutheran Church Finds “Solutions” with Community Loudspeakers

First Lutheran Church, Ellicott, Maryland

The leafy green hills west of Baltimore are home to First Lutheran, one of the area’s oldest and beloved churches. Established in 1874, the church has grown steadily over the years, moving to its current site in the mid-1950s. The campus is home to several buildings, including the Ellicott City Children’s House, Montessori School, and the current sanctuary, dedicated in 1996.

The octagonally-shaped sanctuary is as beautiful as it is acoustically challenging. Designed to feature the church’s exquisite pipe organ and choir, the building’s wood and glass ceiling, brick walls and rock and tile floor create a reflective environment that wreaks havoc with spoken word intelligibility. As Senior Pastor Eugene Kern explains, the issue was one that was initially not easy to discern.

“Since my arrival to First Lutheran in early 2009, there were complaints passed on to me about the sound system,” says Kern. “It took some time to interpret the specifics behind generalized statements like ‘I can’t hear,’ but we eventually determined that we did, indeed, have a number of ‘dead’ zones in the sanctuary where the quality of the sound was reduced. To make matters even more confusing, we also determined that we had a number of volunteers attempting to remedy the situation by making adjustments to the mixing console – with an astounding variety of results.”

Once the problems were identified, the church turned to Frederick, MD-based Audio-Video Group, who designed and installed a system based around Community Professional Loudspeakers’ Solutions Series SLS920 three-way high performance loudspeakers. A ring of eight SLS920 cabinets flown over the stage provides consistent, even coverage to the entire sanctuary.

“The system covers every seat, with no dead zones,” says Kern. “The sound is clear, and volume is controlled electronically. Intelligibility is vastly improved, and we are able to expand our inputs to two, three, six or even seven microphones just by turning a knob. The automation is an unexpected plus – we come in on Sunday morning, turn on the system, and we’re ready to go. We no longer have to rely on volunteers to turn knobs and adjust levels.”

As is often the case, aesthetics also played a key role in the system design. “When this sanctuary was completed in the mid-1990s, it won awards for its design – it really is a special place,” says Kern. “The original sound system, which I’m told was state-of-the-art for its time, was designed to make the loudspeakers look like light fixtures. In fact, visitors sometimes commented on how many lights were out in the sanctuary. But while it was interesting from a visual perspective, it wasn’t very effective, and AVG’s engineers made it clear that the best solution was a radically different approach, with a ring of speakers projecting out toward the pews. The new system sounds great, and you can hear clearly from every seat.”

Kern gives high marks to the AVG crew as well. “Eric Johnson and his team were a great fit for us,” he says. “They understand church – what goes on here, and what the needs are across multiple generations. They really listened to us, and took the time to get to the root of the issues affecting us. They offered us the best solution, and stood behind it with integrity, competence and professionalism.”
