GRAMMY®-Winning Producer/Engineer Frank Filipetti On HARMAN’s JBL LSR6300 Series Studio Monitors: “They Give Me Accurate Playback No Matter Where I’m Working”

NORTHRIDGE, California – GRAMMY®-winning Frank Filipetti is one of the music industry’s most accomplished engineers and producers and was recently nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY for “Best Surround Sound” for the 5.1 mix of An Evening With: Dave Grusin. Filipetti began his career in the 1980s and has worked with top artists including Foreigner, KISS, Luciano Pavarotti, James Taylor, Andrea Bocelli, Billy Joel, Liza Minnelli, Elton John, Korn, Barbra Streisand and dozens of others. One thing stays constant through Filipetti’s variety of prestigious projects: his HARMAN JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors.

An Evening With: Dave Grusin is a live recording that captured a 75-piece orchestra performing a collection of 12 songs by Grusin, Gershwin, Bernstein and other composers, with guest artists including Jon Secada, Patti Austin, Gary Burton and others. “Producer Phil Ramone and engineer Eric Schilling recorded the concert and I did the mixing and mastering,” Filipetti said. ”The challenge here was taking this large ensemble of instruments and performers and bringing clarity and focus to all those open mics in a 5.1 sound field. Trashing a prime directive of recording, I knew from the start that I was going to need to pan the instruments in a way totally at odds with the stage setup. But to do that and keep things from smearing, I needed to be absolutely sure I heard every element of the mix accurately. Accurate monitors are even more important in mixing for 5.1 than they are in stereo—any inaccuracy is now tripled! And the JBL LSR6300 monitors deliver accuracy in spades.”

“You can’t record, engineer, produce or mix anything well without an accurate sonic reference,” Filipetti continued. “If you can’t trust what your monitors are giving you, you’re always going to be working against yourself and everything you do will be a crap shoot. I know I can depend on the JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors. They’ve proven themselves to me time and time again.”

Filipetti also recorded and mixed The Book of Mormon, which earned a GRAMMY Award for “Best Musical Theater Album.” “Recording The Book of Mormon was very challenging because of the number of open microphones in close quarters [especially the singers], which magnified phase issues and other sonic difficulties,” Filipetti said. “Having accurate, high-resolution monitors like the LSR6300’s was absolutely critical. We needed to be able to hear every nuance of what the mics were picking up both on and off axis before ever hitting ‘record,’ as there would be no time to fix it in the mix.”

Recording an outdoor concert can be one of the most daunting tasks in live production – especially when it’s Concerto, One Night In Central Park by Andrea Bocelli. “We were recording this in 5.1 and stereo for Blu-ray, and it was a one-off performance—so we had to get the entire concert in one evening, no second chance,” Filipetti noted. “Talk about high stakes—we had Alan Gilbert and The New York Philharmonic, along with Andrea; guest artists including Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Bryn Terfel and Chris Botti. There were up to four opera singers onstage at one time, along with a full orchestra, a pop rhythm section, assorted soloists, a 100-voice choir, and 10 audience mics for a total of 160 mics traveling through nearly a quarter-mile of fiber optic cable into our truck. On top of it all, it was raining.”

“I’ve used the JBL LSR6300 monitors in hundreds of situations for nearly 10 years,” Filipetti concluded. “With other monitors I find I’m always wondering how things are going to sound on other systems, and mentally compensating. I don’t have to make those mental adjustments with the LSR’s, and that confidence gives me the ability to do what I feel is best because I know my productions are going to sound the way I heard them. What you hear is what you get!”

Blackmagic Design Adds Macros and Advanced Control Options to Videohub SDI Routers

Blackmagic Design today released Videohub 4.9 a major new software update that adds new Macro support as well as advanced network based configuration of control panels for its range of Videohub SDI routers and Smart Control panels.

Videohub 4.9 for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers.

Blackmagic Design’s Videohub family of products make it truly affordable to route SD, HD and 3 Gb/s SDI video and eliminates the need for manual video patching. Videohubs range from 16 x 16 SDI up to the 288 x 288 Universal Videohub that lets customers mix SDI and optical fiber interfaces in a modular rack based design. Videohub and Universal Videohub routers can be fully controlled using networkable Videohub Control Panel software and Videohub Smart Control, a 1 rack unit hardware control panel consisting of 40 programmable buttons with full RGB illumination.

Videohub 4.9 adds new functionality for new and existing Videohub customers. The addition of macros to Videohub Smart Control means that users can now activate multiple simultaneous switching commands with a single button press. New Smart Control configuration software lets users define up to 10 macros each with their own source and destination routing commands that can then be activated by one button.

Also included is the new Smart Control software utility which provides advanced ethernet configuration options all from a single central software utility for Windows and Mac OS X. This new control utility includes a new identify function which lets users visibly select the Smart Control panel they want to configure. Pressing the identify key causes all 40 Smart Control buttons to flash. This feature is particularly useful when multiple Smart Control units are used to control a Videohub and users need to identify the correct control panel they want to configure, so setting up Videohub routing systems is simpler and configuration mistakes are eliminated. Network configuration of control panels makes it easy to assign specific inputs, outputs and now macros to particular buttons, even when a facility has hundreds of control panels. Users can also create a unique name for each panel to further aid identification.

This new software update also adds support for allowing destinations to be locked from a Smart Control panel as well as Videohub software. The ability to lock specific routes is imperative in mission critical environments to avoid accidental breaking of these connections. Pressing and holding down a chosen destination will turn the button blue and this connection cannot be broken by another attached Smart Control.

“Videohub routers are the heart of a post production or broadcast facility and therefore it’s important to have flexible and reliable methods of controlling them,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design. “The addition of macros and these further new control functions gives customers a powerful set of controls that match the incredible high video quality of all Videohub models.”

The Future of Premium Theater Experiences to Be Powered By New Christie Duo Solution

Christie® today announced Christie Duo™, a new dual–projection integration kit as a solution intended to give exhibitors the ability to create and deliver their own, branded premium theater experience.

“Exhibitors have invested heavily in building their own brand in their respective markets. With Christie Duo, we’re providing an opportunity for our exhibitors and our business partners to enhance their offerings with a premium experience,” said Don Shaw, director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions. “Now any exhibitor can deliver the brightest 2K or 4K movie experience in 2D or 3D on the largest screens. We’re excited to give exhibitors a solution to help them further leverage and market their own premium brand to today’s sophisticated movie-going audiences.”

The Christie Duo™ integration kit can be purchased with either 2K or 4K Christie Solaria™ Series digital cinema projectors or as a standalone integration kit for Christie customers who already have Christie projectors — the world’s best-selling DCI-compliant digital cinema projectors with more than 28,000 shipped and installed to date.

The integration kit features the choice of two configurations: a compact and convenient stacking system for 3D installations, or a new, innovative physical configuration that perfectly aligns every pixel on the screen for optimal 2D and 3D presentations. Coupled with automated features that easily calibrate, align and optimize the images from both Christie Solaria™ Series 2K or 4K digital cinema projectors, Christie Duo delivers a completely seamless, premium movie experience for the world’s largest screens. When combined with world-leading 3D systems, exhibitors can achieve 3D image brightness levels up to twice as high as what can be achieved using the current large-format market leader — at a significant overall cost saving.

One-time Investment Puts Customers First
Building on its history of delivering industry-first solutions for exhibitors, Christie has responded to the global market demand for a solution that delivers a cost effective and financially accessible premium movie experience, one that is affordable today and tomorrow.

“We pride ourselves on responding to customer needs and our customers approached us for a flexible and economical solution to deliver a premium cinema experience. They wanted a low initial investment in equipment and not to be constrained by business models that may require them to share ongoing box office revenues with the equipment supplier. With Christie Duo, we’re delivering high value at a price point that provides immersive cinema experiences to all,” Shaw added.

Early Demonstrations and Installations Confirm Market Acceptance
In December 2011 Christie successfully demonstrated a dual-stacked 4K digital cinema projection solution, displaying true DLP Cinema® 4K resolution in 3D with incomparable brightness levels of 68,000 ANSI lumens, using two Christie CP4230 digital cinema projectors. Using Christie Duo technology, the demonstration was conducted in a theater in Shanghai to leading cinema owners and exhibitors in China (http://www.christiedigital.com/stacked-4k-demo). Attendees experienced a presentation featuring unmatched brightness, sharpness and superior 3D images — generating an enthusiastic and welcoming response from industry attendees.

Early adopters of Christie Duo include Grupo Araújo de Cinemas in Brazil and ArcLight Cinemas in the United States, which recently installed the solution at several ArcLight Cinemas, including the historic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.

Christie Premium Theater Featured at ArcLight Cinemas

“We’ve put our trust in a Christie Duo system to dazzle audiences in our world-famous ArcLight Hollywood theater,” commented Joe Miraglia, director of design, construction and facilities at ArcLight. “We look forward to receiving and installing the next components in this system – an automated alignment and calibration solution – to ensure optimal image quality and brightness, at 4K resolutions for our most discerning audiences.”

Marcos Araújo, director, Grupo Araújo de Cinemas, Brazil, concurred. “Affordability, without sacrificing quality, is paramount for us and we are pleased to be partnering with Christie to bring the premium theater experience to our customers throughout Brazil.”

Christie dealer Kelonik Transisom installed Christie Duo at Grupo Araújo de Cinemas. Noted Isaac Besso, director, Kelonik Transisom, “We pride ourselves on introducing the newest and most innovative products to our clientele, reflecting our desire to provide maximum customer service to them, and certainly the Christie Duo solution fits perfectly with this strategy.”

Product Availability
Demonstrations of Christie Duo are scheduled for CinemaCon 2012, with wide product availability in the summer of 2012. The combination of two Christie Solaria projectors and the Christie Duo Integration Kit is expected to deliver significant cost savings compared to other branded ‘big screen’ solutions. The solution will be fully compatible with recently announced Christie® Previsto™ High Frame Rate (HFR) technology.

Christie’s Commitment to HFR
The two main goals of Christie’s HFR activities are to help the industry develop the best HFR content and the best delivery system for HFR content. The first goal involves assisting leading-edge filmmakers and post-production companies in perfecting HFR movie creation, so the industry has the most engaging, entertaining content possible. The second goal is to assist exhibitors in showing these 3D HFR movies in all their glory. To these ends, Christie is helping create the standards for 3D HFR movies through formal and informal technology-development alliances with major producers and directors, post production facilities, studios and technology partners. On the exhibitor’s front, Christie provides one-stop shopping for all the hardware, software and services that enable exhibitors to deliver a filmmaker’s vision in stunning 3D HFR quality.

3Stage Design Opts for High Resolution Systems’ UDC Control for Honeywell Global Aviation Services Booth at NBAA 2011

It was smooth flying for Honeywell Global Aviation Services when 3Stage Design selected High Resolution Systems’ Universal Device Controller (UDC) to manage Honeywell’s innovative video experience at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) 2011 trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Honeywell agency The Brand Experience contracted 3Stage Design, which has offices in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., to create the video system for Honeywell’s featured booth near one of the main doors to the vast convention center. Configured like an airport runway, the booth had five Prysm Digital Mannequins spaced on the simulated tarmac with a large model plane, made of fabric, suspended above. A three- to four-minute attract video was displayed on the 5×2-foot Prysm Mannequins, or towers, and across the aircraft to draw visitors to the booth. Once inside, Honeywell sales associates could then call up an array of product videos on those same towers to tailor presentations to customers’ needs.

High Resolution Systems’ UDC is a software-based control platform for simple, cost-effective control of devices using IP (TCP/UDP) or serial (232/422/485) protocols.

“UDC tied together the towers and the aircraft and controlled all the media players feeding them,” says Todd Hall, who is partnered with Emile Wolsky in 3Stage Design. “We needed a system that would enable us to use the Brightsign media servers we own and that would work with Android tablets used by the sales associates. Greg Byrnes and his team at High Resolution Systems preprogrammed UDC to allow us to utilize our existing equipment.”

Each of the five towers had a holder containing an Android tablet preprogrammed with UDC control software, which acted as the touchscreen interface for some 20 different sales videos for products such as Honeywell’s EGPWS warning system, Smart Runway and Smart Landing systems, and HTF 7000 engines.

“The sales associate could walk to a tower and use the tablet to call up the video on the product the customer was interested in,” says Hall. “Another tablet permitted us to run the attract video and override anything on the towers.”

A six-foot umbilical tied the tablets to the UDC server, which talked to the Brightsign media players. “We’ve learned by experience that wireless is not a good solution for the trade show floor,” Hall notes. “When everybody’s systems are fired up, everything crashes.”

The ability of UDC to offer a customized GUI was also important, he says. “We designed the GUI and provided a lot of suggestions and input in terms of the layout and the buttons. Greg took our Photoshop files and refined them. His attention to detail regarding how the app would run was invaluable to us – things like having time outs on the tablets and password protection on different levels of the tablets.”

Hall reports that the client was “very happy” with the booth’s video components. For Hall’s part, having seen what High Resolution Systems’ UDC can do, he is already working on a new project with Greg Byrnes utilizing UDC control.
