HARMAN Audio Components Grace the Stage at 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards

NORTHRIDGE, California – As in years past, HARMAN Professional audio components played a crucial role in the live sound reinforcement system at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, held February 12 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. ATK Audiotek provided live sound reinforcement at the venue, relying on JBL VERTEC® line arrays and AKG microphones.

The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest Night®, is presented by The Recording Academy® to honor outstanding achievements in the production and performance of recorded music. This year’s awards featured performances by some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Bruce Springsteen, The Beach Boys, Bruno Mars and others, highlighted by a special tribute to Glen Campbell. Adele earned multiple GRAMMY Awards, including Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year for “Rolling in the Deep,” and Album Of The Year for 21.

This year’s GRAMMY Awards also featured performances by HARMAN’s JBL “Hear the Truth” campaign artists Paul McCartney and Maroon 5, while HARMAN artist Kanye West won four awards.

ATK Audiotek provided the main PA system, which featured four arrays each containing 12 VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements, plus two arrays of six VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers each. An additional 12 VRX932 Constant Curvature loudspeakers were used for front fill.

The STAPLES Center also features a newly installed JBL VERTEC line array system, which ATK Audiotek utilized in addition to some temporary components. The STAPLES Center system features eight arrays each containing between 11 and 13 JBL VT4889DP-DA powered line array elements, plus two fill clusters each containing four VT4889DP-DA elements, which are specially positioned to cover the end seating areas. The system also features four subwoofer arrays, each containing six VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers.

ATK Audiotek also equipped all three pianos on stage with three AKG C414 microphones each. The pianos were featured in multiple performances throughout the GRAMMY Awards, including performances by Diana Krall, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys. Rusty Anderson, who played guitar during Paul McCartney’s performance, used an AKG DMS700 digital wireless system in his guitar setup, while Chris Brown used a Crown CM311 microphone for vocals.

“Providing live sound for the GRAMMY Awards is always a unique challenge, given the variety of performers and elaborate productions,” said Brett Valasek, General Manager, ATK Audiotek. “VERTEC line arrays consistently perform well for us and our system, combined with the new in-house PA system at the STAPLES Center, provided the necessary coverage and output to deliver high-quality sound to the live audience.”

Blackmagic Design Adds Timecode and DNxHD QuickTime Support to HyperDeck SSD Recorders

Blackmagic Design today announced the release of HyperDeck 2.5 public beta, a new software update that adds embedded timecode support, DNxHD recording to QuickTime and SDI camera record triggering to its HyperDeck SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 public beta for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers. This update includes support for both HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and HyperDeck Studio models of Blackmagic Design SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 software includes timecode support for both HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio. Timecode information embedded within the ancillary data space of HD-SDI video signals can now be written to HyperDeck’s uncompressed or Avid DNxHD compressed video files. Customers can preserve the timecode from their incoming video stream based on the standard RP-188 HD protocol and playback recorded files with this original timecode information.

HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio models feature Avid DNxHD record and playback that is fully certified by Avid. HyperDeck 2.5 software adds the option to record and playback DNxHD QuickTime as well as DNxHD MXF format files. The choice to wrap DNxHD files in a QuickTime format extends the opportunity to use Avid’s industry standard file encoding with a wide range of software and to suit specific workflows.

Recording to HyperDeck Shuttle can now be automatically triggered by cameras and other HD-SDI video equipment. Many professional cameras embed start/stop flags within their SDI video output and HyperDeck Shuttle now recognizes these commands to start and stop recording in sync with the camera. The advantage is that customers can now record to HyperDeck Shuttle without the need to separately activate recording on their camera and disk recorder.

As some cameras don’t output the start/stop flag in the standard way, this new update also includes a new rolling timecode record trigger feature. This means now virtually any camera or device that outputs RP-188 timecode can be used to start and stop HyperDeck Shuttle recording! HyperDeck will now watch RP-188 HD timecode and when the timecode starts counting, the HyperDeck will instantly start recording! This means even professional equipment and cameras like the ARRI ALEXA can now automatically trigger HyperDeck Shuttle to record uncompressed or DNxHD timecode synchronized files!

“This software update adds a number of valuable functions to HyperDeck,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “We’ve based this on feedback from HyperDeck customers on the features they needed most and this feedback reflects the wide use of HyperDeck recorders from acquisition through to content delivery.”

Worldstage Helps Oracle Retail Group Have a Big Presence at Retail’s BIG Show

Oracle

Oracle

It was a big show for the retail industry and Worldstage helped Oracle Retail Group have a commanding presence at the NRF’s 101st Annual Convention & Expo at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Worldstage, the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications, supported the high-tech company with a unique videowall featuring a live Twitter feed that captured the attention of visitors to what’s known as “Retail’s BIG Show,” sponsored by the National Retail Federation.

More than 25,000 people from 78 countries attended the 2012 event held January 15-18. Former President Bill Clinton was the convention’s keynote speaker.

When the client presented technical director David Rome of RomeAntics with the design, David reached out to Worldstage President, Josh Weisberg for assistance with the equipment and programming.

Worldstage, Inc. provided Oracle with a beautiful hi-res videowall for the upper level of their booth along with a video playback system that integrated a customized live Twitter feed into the imagery. The wall, which displayed Oracle’s large-format graphical content, was comprised of 32 narrow-bezel NEC 46-inch LCD monitors.

“We worked closely with David and the booth designer ShowCraft, to coordinate the details of the installation.” comments Michael May, Sr. Account Executive at WorldStage. “Our team developed a custom mounting structure to help support the weight of the large videowall on the second level of the booth. Space for the wall mounts and control was tight, so the control racks also had to be customized to fit in the space. The folks at Showcraft were great to work with and modified their plans to allocate room for these items.”

“We used Dataton’s WATCHOUT system as the primary playback device for the display,” says Josh Perlman, WorldStage’s Project Manager who managed the installation of the video system. “In addition, we chose WATCHOUT’s Dynamic Image Server toolset to ‘key’ in a live Twitter feed across the lower-quarter of the wall.”

WATCHOUT programmer and operator Josh Silverman adds, “We developed a Flash animation to pull Tweets from the @OracleRetail Twitter account and animate them on and off the wall. The WATCHOUT Dynamic Image Server executed a Flash file then pushed the rendered frames of text out to the WATCHOUT display machines, which layered the Tweets, with transparency, onto the bottom quarter of the videowall.”

“Everyone was very happy with Oracle’s innovative videowall,” reports David Rome. “Worldstage performed very well on the busy convention floor.”

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.
