Saginaw Valley University Gets Powered by Renkus-Heinz

Saginaw, MI – February 2012….  Saginaw Valley State University is one of Michigan’s fastest-growing universities, and its Cardinal Athletics teams draw a steady stream of fans year-round. The university’s main athletic complex, the Ryder Center, comprises a number of venues, including a 6800-seat football stadium, indoor and outdoor track and field facilities, baseball, soccer and softball fields and more.

The Center’s 3700-seat James E. O’Neill Arena is home to the university’s Cardinal basketball teams. The multipurpose facility can be segmented using movable walls, accommodating not just basketball, but everything from baseball practice, pole vaulting and shot putting to convocations, and even the occasional swap meet. The arena recently received a major sound system upgrade, overseen by Bret Emerson of Rockford, MI-based CommTech Design, installing a high-powered audio system featuring Renkus-Heinz CF-Series modular point-source array loudspeakers.

As Dave Spoelhof of Grand Rapids-based Accurate Audio Consultants, the audio consultant on the project, explains, the arena’s original sound system had never been quite up to the task. “The original system was put in when the building was built, about 15 years ago,” he says. “They chose at the time to go with a distributed system utilizing 12-inch coaxial speakers mounted overhead, some 30 feet above the floor. The coverage was inconsistent and uneven – there were hot spots and dead spots, and depending on how high your seats were in the bleachers, you either couldn’t hear or you got blasted.”

The new system, installed by ICOMM of Clio, MI, comprises 26 Renkus-Heinz CF101LA cabinets, with six arrays of two and three boxes covering the court and seating areas. Spoelhof says the release of the CF-Series CF101LA was well-timed for this project. “It just so happened that about two weeks before we started with this project, my rep Mike Somerville (of McFadden Sales) had invited me to their facility for a demo of the new CF series,” he recounts. “I was blown away by how articulate and yet musical it was. And it was about half the price of other comparable systems, which enabled us to stay within the client’s budget.” The CF101LA cabinet employs a 10-inch woofer and two 1-inch compression drivers in a 15-degree cabinet, allowing unparalleled sound pressure to be directed into an exceptionally tight pattern.

Each array also includes a single CF15S subwoofer, providing powerful low frequency performance. “They hold a wide range of events there, and they were clear in their desire for full-range performance,” says Spoelhof. “So even though the primary focus was on speech intelligibility, they were clear that they also wanted the system to rock.”

Symetrix Jupiter 8 DSP units provide system drive and processing. “They wanted something that provided great coverage, great sound, and was easy to operate,” says Spoelhof. “We provided them with a number of different presets, changing the beam configuration depending on how they were using the room. Basically we’ve got presets for different sporting events, small commencements, large commencements, and so on.”

Spoelhof points to the CF101 as ideal for this type of application. “I’ve designed large arena systems in the past, sometimes using line arrays and sometimes using point source systems,” he says. “With the CF101 boxes, we were able to bring in the best of both worlds. It gave us the reconfigurable coverage we were looking for, using a permanently installed line array, and without the need for a ton of boxes.”

Community Seeks EN54-24 Compliance for R-Series Loudspeakers

http://www.communitypro.com/images/articles/news/2012/February/Vibration%20testing_RSeries.JPG

Chester, PA, February 2012…   Large venues of every kind need intelligible voice evacuation and mass notification capabilities, yet many typical fire-alarm voice-evacuation systems provide neither the voice intelligibility nor the sound levels (volume) needed to effectively communicate with very large numbers of people over the ambient levels of a real-life emergency situation.

Throughout Europe, venues such as stadia, sports and convention centers already have high intelligibility, high-level sound systems for entertainment and voice paging which can communicate effectively. For such systems installers could comply with the BS EN 60849 Standard for the installation, but there was no common laboratory test for the loudspeaker equipment. This remained subject to different requirements in every country. The introduction of the EN54-24 Standard dramatically changed this, providing a harmonized EU standard to test to.

To enable its loudspeakers to be used in voice alarm systems in venues across Europe, Community Professional Loudspeakers has applied for EN54-24 Certification of many of its large-scale loudspeaker systems through the international laboratory network of European Notified Body, Intertek. Their newly opened Life Safety & Security testing facility in Leatherhead UK had been developed to accommodate larger products used in fire detection and evacuation and had the capacity to test Community’s loudspeakers which weigh between 40 and 145 kilos.

EN54-24 specifies the minimum requirements for voice alarm loudspeaker as a component of a voice alarm system to provide intelligible warning when a fire emergency has occurred and provides a common method of testing their operational performance.   It also specifies the common requirements for construction and robustness under climatic or mechanical conditions that might occur in a service environment.

With EN54-24 addressing the performance of products before and after they have been conditioned by factors such as corrosion, changes in temperature, vibration and impact, Intertek’s test and assessment engineers worked closely with the technical experts at Community to put various models through their paces.

Intertek’s newly built acoustic chamber enables test engineers to take audio readings at 4m as required by EN54-24 and their 998cm3 SO2 corrosion chamber (double the size of most corrosion chambers operating) is capable of conditioning larger products to simulate environmental aging.

Community is ahead of the compliance curve in this project having considered the EN54-24 requirements over a year ago and immediately initiating their plans, ahead of many other large-scale manufacturers selling into Europe.

“Sometimes new standards seem to result in nothing but red tape and bureaucracy”, said Chris Foreman, Community’s COO, “But EN-54-24 actually allows high quality professional audio systems – systems that often exceed the output capabilities of standard emergency products – to be used in emergency applications.  Community systems, particularly R-Series Systems, are already the go-to product in Europe for outdoor entertainment systems.  Given their exceptional voice capability, we expect that we will continue to enjoy great success as this directive progresses.”

Eastern Stage Productions Outfits Spectacular Gotham Hall With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™ Console

NEW YORK, New York – From elegant social events to corporate gatherings and non-profit galas, New York City’s Gotham Hall never ceases to amaze. In order to match the prestige of the venue and its variety of functions, Eastern Stage Productions, located in Edgewood, New York, recently installed a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital console.

Gotham Hall, originally a landmark bank built in 1922 incorporating many Roman architectural features, was transformed in 2002 into a remarkable high-end ballroom. It has been used for a variety of events including concerts by James Brown, Alicia Keys, the B-52’s and corporate events such as the 2003 BMG GRAMMY® Awards after-party.

When looking to upgrade to a digital board, Tim Wright, Engineer for Eastern Stage Productions, recognized the need for a compact desk to fit in the corner of the large ballroom. “We didn’t want anything that would interfere with the overall atmosphere of the building as it has some amazing artwork and designs we didn’t want to obscure,” he said. “The Vi1 fits perfectly into our little 3×4-foot area, and we don’t lose any functionality that you would with other brands. Having the versatility to use the board at both the FOH and monitor positions gives us even more options.”

Easy control of different zones throughout the ballroom is an important feature of the Vi1, Wright noted. “Having control of the right, left and center speakers and being able to easily make adjustments to EQ is huge due to the fact that the dome shaped ceiling makes it acoustically difficult to tune. This makes it ideal for different types of concerts and events where you can change settings depending on the situation,” Wright stated. “I have loved using the de-esser and compressor to adjust the settings to fit the room as well. I don’t need to scroll through pages to change a quick setting, the EQ is very responsive and makes life easy.”

When making the transition to digital, Wright noted the easy learning process of Soundcraft and how it feels like an analog board. “The transition was seamless and gives us everything that we need and more for the price point. For a regional sound company we couldn’t have found a better fit.”

With the versatility that Gotham Hall offers to its patrons, simple connectivity of the Vi1 is important, as it can easily be moved to different locations throughout the space. “It is so user-friendly, there is no need to patch wire, no latency, everything just works well. I even encourage other engineers to try the board and most of them recognize right away the advantages that Soundcraft provides over other boards,” stated Wright.

Wright added, “Honestly for how compact the console is I am constantly surprised at how much it offers. The built-in Lexicon effects are easy to scroll through and changing settings is easy with the click of a button. The ability of the soft patching to copy vocals or settings to a different page is great. It’s just another way that Soundcraft is making my life easier and allowing me to focus on what needs to be done instead of making tedious changes to settings.”

“The support that I have received from Soundcraft verifies everything I feel about the company and console,” Wright concluded. “They are very helpful with support and truly know what they are talking about rather than simply reading from a script. If I didn’t truly love it I wouldn’t try to push the Soundcraft brand as much as I do.”
