Gefen Announces Two New Extenders for DVI using CAT-6 or Fiber Optic Cabling to Achieve Longer Distances with High Resolution Support

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced the availability of two new extenders for computers and displays using DVI. Each offers a unique method of extension and support for the delivery of DVI with RS-232 over the same cabling.

Dual Link DVI over CAT-6 Extender

This rack-mount sender/receiver solution extends the high resolutions of dual link DVI (up to 3840×2400) using two CAT-6 cables, effective at distances up to 200 feet (60m). A plug and play installation, delivery of additional features such as RS-232 control and built-in EDID management makes the Dual Link DVI over CAT-6 Extender a solid performer for demanding dual link DVI applications. Locking power supplies and RS-232 firmware upgrades enhance performance.

DVI RS-232 over Fiber Extender

This ultra long distance extender relies on a single strand of SC-terminated fiber optic cable to deliver both DVI and RS-232 up to 1640 feet (500m) in distance. The use of fiber optic cabling is ideal for applications where EMI (electromagnetic interference) is an important issue. RS-232 allows for automation and control of the display while locking connectors for the power supplies ensure a solid and robust installation.

“Professionals working with DVI now have greater options for extension than ever before,” said Hagai Gefen, president and CEO, Gefen. “The use of fiber optic single strand cabling offers a nice alternative to solutions that require many cables for the same application.”

Community Seeks EN54-24 Compliance for R-Series Loudspeakers

Large venues of every kind need intelligible voice evacuation and mass notification capabilities, yet many typical fire-alarm voice-evacuation systems provide neither the voice intelligibility nor the sound levels (volume) needed to effectively communicate with very large numbers of people over the ambient levels of a real-life emergency situation.

Throughout Europe, venues such as stadia, sports and convention centers already have high intelligibility, high-level sound systems for entertainment and voice paging which can communicate effectively. For such systems installers could comply with the BS EN 60849 Standard for the installation, but there was no common laboratory test for the loudspeaker equipment. This remained subject to different requirements in every country. The introduction of the EN54-24 Standard dramatically changed this, providing a harmonized EU standard to test to.

To enable its loudspeakers to be used in voice alarm systems in venues across Europe, Community Professional Loudspeakers has applied for EN54-24 Certification of many of its large-scale loudspeaker systems through the international laboratory network of European Notified Body, Intertek. Their newly opened Life Safety & Security testing facility in Leatherhead UK had been developed to accommodate larger products used in fire detection and evacuation and had the capacity to test Community’s loudspeakers which weigh between 40 and 145 kilos.

EN54-24 specifies the minimum requirements for voice alarm loudspeaker as a component of a voice alarm system to provide intelligible warning when a fire emergency has occurred and provides a common method of testing their operational performance. It also specifies the common requirements for construction and robustness under climatic or mechanical conditions that might occur in a service environment.

With EN54-24 addressing the performance of products before and after they have been conditioned by factors such as corrosion, changes in temperature, vibration and impact, Intertek’s test and assessment engineers worked closely with the technical experts at Community to put various models through their paces.

Intertek’s newly built acoustic chamber enables test engineers to take audio readings at 4m as required by EN54-24 and their 998cm3 SO2 corrosion chamber (double the size of most corrosion chambers operating) is capable of conditioning larger products to simulate environmental aging.

Community is ahead of the compliance curve in this project having considered the EN54-24 requirements over a year ago and immediately initiating their plans, ahead of many other large-scale manufacturers selling into Europe.
“Sometimes new standards seem to result in nothing but red tape and bureaucracy”, said Chris Foreman, Community’s COO, “But EN-54-24 actually allows high quality professional audio systems – systems that often exceed the output capabilities of standard emergency products – to be used in emergency applications. Community systems, particularly R-Series Systems, are already the go-to product in Europe for outdoor entertainment systems. Given their exceptional voice capability, we expect that we will continue to enjoy great success as this directive progresses.”

Jünger Audio Secures a Prestigious Order from Chinese Broadcaster NBTV

As China turns its attention to the issue of loudness control across TV and radio, one of the country’s most prestigious broadcasters has chosen technology from German dynamics specialist Jünger Audio to ensure delivery of superior audio quality to its audiences.

Based in Ningbo in the East China province of Zhejiang, NBTV has installed five Jünger Audio D*AP LM4 four-channel Digital Audio Processors to tackle loudness control across all of its television channels. The D*AP LM4 units incorporate Version II of Jünger Audio’s renowned LEVEL MAGIC™ algorithm and feature on-board AES/EBU digital I/O, along with optional 3G/HD/SD-SDI I/O or analogue I/O.

This important sale was negotiated by Jian Gao, head of Jünger Audio’s China office, in conjunction with the company’s local sales partner Rotec China which specialises in providing high end solutions to the broadcast market. Based in Shanghai, Rotec China also supplies equipment from manufacturers such as Dolby, Sony, Cannon and FOR-A.

Mr Tim Zhong, Sales Engineer for Rotec China who was in charge of the NBTV project, says: “NBTV has a strong reputation for installing cutting edge technology and is renowned for thoroughly testing all equipment before making a decision to invest. In this case the broadcaster was looking to upgrade its automatic transmission equipment to incorporate loudness control and Rotec was approached to recommend suitable products.

“Jian Gao and Rotec China visited the broadcaster on a number of occasions and suggested Jünger Audio’s D*AP LM4 processor because it was perfectly suited to NBTV’s needs. Not only is the unit compliant with all current broadcast audio loudness recommendations (including ITU, EBU R128 and ATSC A/85) but it can also be automatically controlled via a web interface for remote applications.”

NBTV tested a number of different manufacturer’s loudness solutions before choosing the Jünger Audio D*AP LM4. Its decision was based on the unit’s overall sound quality and its ability to control loudness across different programmes and different channels.

Mr Shi-Song Wu, the director of NBTV’s Technical Center, says: “We installed five D*AP LM4 units in time for the recent Chinese New Year celebrations. Their performance has been great and we are very impressed with their ability to accurately control audio loudness. The combination of German reliability and precision engineering were also key factors in our decision to invest.”

Loudness control in China is now receiving serious attention from both the Government and from the major broadcasters, all of which are state owned and have their investment in technology secured every year. As in other parts of the world, loudness control is being driven by complaints from viewers who are often irritated by inconsistencies in level between different channels and between programmes and commercials.

Tim Zhong says: “China’s regulatory body SARFT is set to issue its own standard on audio loudness and we believe that this will be specify -24LKFS as the average loudness level. This is similar to the standard that has already been adopted in Europe and the USA and for this reason many Chinese broadcasters, including NBTV, are implementing the ITU1770 standard.”

Another broadcaster that is implementing the ITU standard is FJTV, a provincial station in Fujian. FJTV is also an advocate of Jünger Audio ITU-complaint loudness control technology, having installed a number of the company’s B46 units in recent years. The broadcaster recently added to its equipment itinerary with three more B46 units, which it is using for newly added channels.

Jünger Audio’s Jian Gao says: “The B46 processor has been a good and affordable solution for Chinese broadcasters but it is being superseded by the D*AP LM4. We are now arranging for FJTV to trial the D*AP LM4 as it offers a lot more functionality including the ability to log loudness levels, which will be an important consideration for broadcasters if they are to comply with any new legislation.”

Blackmagic Design Adds Timecode and DNxHD QuickTime Support to HyperDeck SSD Recorders

Blackmagic Design today announced the release of HyperDeck 2.5 public beta, a new software update that adds embedded timecode support, DNxHD recording to QuickTime and SDI camera record triggering to its HyperDeck SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 public beta for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers. This update includes support for both HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and HyperDeck Studio models of Blackmagic Design SSD recorders.

HyperDeck 2.5 software includes timecode support for both HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio. Timecode information embedded within the ancillary data space of HD-SDI video signals can now be written to HyperDeck’s uncompressed or Avid DNxHD compressed video files. Customers can preserve the timecode from their incoming video stream based on the standard RP-188 HD protocol and playback recorded files with this original timecode information.

HyperDeck Shuttle and HyperDeck Studio models feature Avid DNxHD record and playback that is fully certified by Avid. HyperDeck 2.5 software adds the option to record and playback DNxHD QuickTime as well as DNxHD MXF format files. The choice to wrap DNxHD files in a QuickTime format extends the opportunity to use Avid’s industry standard file encoding with a wide range of software and to suit specific workflows.

Recording to HyperDeck Shuttle can now be automatically triggered by cameras and other HD-SDI video equipment. Many professional cameras embed start/stop flags within their SDI video output and HyperDeck Shuttle now recognizes these commands to start and stop recording in sync with the camera. The advantage is that customers can now record to HyperDeck Shuttle without the need to separately activate recording on their camera and disk recorder.

As some cameras don’t output the start/stop flag in the standard way, this new update also includes a new rolling timecode record trigger feature. This means now virtually any camera or device that outputs RP-188 timecode can be used to start and stop HyperDeck Shuttle recording! HyperDeck will now watch RP-188 HD timecode and when the timecode starts counting, the HyperDeck will instantly start recording! This means even professional equipment and cameras like the ARRI ALEXA can now automatically trigger HyperDeck Shuttle to record uncompressed or DNxHD timecode synchronized files!

“This software update adds a number of valuable functions to HyperDeck,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “We’ve based this on feedback from HyperDeck customers on the features they needed most and this feedback reflects the wide use of HyperDeck recorders from acquisition through to content delivery.”

Availability and Price
HyperDeck 2.5 public beta for Mac OS X and Windows is available for download now and is free of charge for all Blackmagic Design customers.
