METRIC HALO CERTIFIES THUNDERBOLT™ TO FIREWIRE SOLUTIONS

thunderbolt_logo.JPGSAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 2012: Metric Halo is pleased to officially certify two Thunderbolt adapters for use with their line of FireWire based audio interfaces. According to Allen Rowand of Metric Halo, “We’ve tested the Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter in the Apple® 27-inch Thunderbolt Display and the Sonnet Technologies™ Echo 34 adapter combined with their FireWire 800 Pro ExpressCard – both systems provide performance identical to native FireWire ports. Since the display has a Thunderbolt pass-through it’s possible to use both adapters at the same time, allowing the user to create two separate FireWire busses. With two busses the user can connect up to six of our interfaces, or use one for up to three interfaces and the other for hard drives.”

Rowand said the company looks forward to incorporating Thunderbolt into their products. “We’re in discussions with Intel to gain access to Thunderbolt more

ASHLY AUDIO KLR SERIES AMPLIFIERS CONTRIBUTE TO GREEN DESIGN AT HILTON

hilton_concord.JPGSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 2012: When the Hilton Concord undertook a multi-million dollar plan to renovate its thirty year-old property, it wanted to do more than merely spruce up the amenities. The popular hotel, which occupies prime real estate on the East Bay of San Francisco, wanted to increase the environmental sustainability of its operations. The overhaul included the use of recycled carpet, LED lighting, low-VOC paints, and a new, super-efficient HVAC system. Even the sound reinforcement system in the building’s flexible ballroom and meeting space contributes to the hotel’s much smaller carbon footprint. Local AV integrator JK Sound, Inc. designed the new sound reinforcement system around Ashly Audio’s new KLR Series amplifiers, which deliver tremendous output efficiency while still maintaining high fidelity, bulletproof reliability, and affordability.

“There wasn’t much to the original sound reinforcement system,” said Dan Thiel, sales and installation more

CLEAR AS A BELL: DANLEY SOUND LABS RINGS IN A NEW ERA AT SALVATION ARMY CLEARWATER CHURCH

salvationarmy_church.JPGCLEARWATER, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 2012: The Salvation Army is consistently ranked as one of the most popular philanthropic groups in the United States. Its name conjures images of Christmastime bell-ringers and thrift stores, both of which provide support for the Army’s vast network of social support programs and its comprehensive disaster relief aid. It is perhaps ironic that despite its very public alignment as a Christian organization, the Salvation Army is not well known for its church services. Its Clearwater, Florida church has grown over the decades, in its congregation and its physical space, as a result of local “adherents” joining and officers from around the country retiring to its Floridian splendor. After moving to a beautiful new building in 1990 with sanctuary capacity for 385 and overflow capacity for over 300 more, the congregants suffered with a woefully inadequate sound system. Solid State Logic Congratulates – And Thanks – This Year’s Grammy Winners

More than 80% of Grammy winning music projects involved artists, producers or engineers who use SSL music and broadcast consoles

OXFORD, UK – Solid State Logic congratulates all those who took home an award at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony. The company is extremely proud that more than 80 percent of the winning projects in the categories that recognise the quality of recorded music involved artists, producers or engineers who regularly use SSL consoles.

This is also the first year that a Grammy winning broadcast has been recorded using one of SSL’s broadcast consoles, which the company first launched in 2003. The Grammy for Best Opera Recording went to Metropolitan Opera (the Met) for its live HD transmission and DVD recording of Doctor Atomic by composer John Adams. This performance was part of the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series, in which operas are broadcast live to theatres around the world and subsequently broadcast on PBS. The music production for all of the Met’s live television and radio broadcasts is done use using SSL’s C100 HDS digital broadcast console, installed in 2008 at the Met.

“It’s great to see so many talented artists, producers and engineers across all genres being recognised for the music they create and it’s particularly exciting to have one of our broadcast consoles involved in the awards for the first time,” says Piers Plaskitt, CEO of SSL, Inc. “Everyone at SSL who’s involved in bringing a console into being takes great pride in their work – they also take pride in the work of the engineers, producers and artists who use our consoles.”

Here is what some of this year’s winners have to say about SSL:

John Kerswell, audio operations director for the Metropolitan Opera, whose recording of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic was a Grammy winner for Best Opera Recording:

“We installed SSL’s C100 console in 2008. The Met has such a busy schedule, and we often rehearse one show in the afternoon and open for a different show in the evening, so the C100’s instant recall lets us turnaround our setup very quickly, which is a huge benefit. With input counts as high as Doctor Atomic’s ninety-two, the C100 makes recording live productions quite manageable and we depend on it for the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series. You can always hear the quality of an SSL as demonstrated in this recording.”

Ken Lewis, who produced, arranged and performed on the album Watch The Throne (Jay-Z and Kanye West), which picked up a Grammy for Best Rap Performance as well as two more Grammys – Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song – for the song All of the Lights (Kanye West, Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Fergie):

“If I’m creating music for artists like Kanye, Drake or Eminem, SSL is capturing the sound. I have earned credits on ten Grammy Nominations in the last two years and my SSL was used for every one of them.”

Martin Walters, mixing engineer, and Terri Lyne Carrington, whose album The Mosaic Project won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album:

“In both tracking and mixing of The Mosaic Project, Solid State Logic channel strips and plug-ins played an important role in achieving the sound we were going for.”

F. Reid Shippen, one of the mix engineers for Chris Tomlin’s And If Our God is For Us, which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album:

“I’m fortunate to have shared the privilege of my seventh Grammy award with the amazing team behind Chris Tomlin. Every record I’ve ever mixed has been on an SSL – the best mixing board on the planet.”

Christ the King Church Enhances Sound with NEXO Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Christ the King Church in Bellingham, WA recently completed an overhaul of its sound system, awarding the installation contract to Clarity Media Group of Portland. Clarity provided the best solution for the task at hand, outfitting the 1,500-seat church with a 20-box NEXO GEO S12 line array.

“The church wanted a system capable of accommodating a worship service and in addition, have rider acceptability to bring in concerts,” states John Harrel, project manager, Clarity Media Group. “The NEXO GEO S12, consisting of eight S1210 boxes per side, is configured as an LCR and was chosen based on its smooth, even coverage as well as its musicality and output. Our client wanted a center cluster rather than front fills and flown subs, so we recommended four GEO S1230s which met their requirements and are tucked away very discretely above the pastor’s podium position. The previous system was an eyesore.” The system also contains four NEXO RS18 Ray Sub cabinets flown, two per side in cardioid mode. Two NEXO NX4x4 and one NX4x1 amplifiers power the system.

“The NEXO system’s ability to maintain uniform coverage despite having a low trim height was key in choosing it for this application,” states Travis Cibolski, Clarity co-owner and designer of the system. “The net effect is that the system delivers uniform, transparent sound to all areas, and with full bandwidth!”

Christ the King Church has 6,000 members in its congregation with two campus locations. The church band consists of 6-10 musicians on average who, according to Harrel, are very discerning when it comes to good audio (one of its members is a signed recording artist).

The church previously installed a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console at front of house, chosen for its ease of use by audio volunteers.
