Hollywood’s SSI Advanced Post Services Installs Teranex VC100 Video Processors

Blackmagic Design today announced that SSI Advanced Post Services, one of Hollywood’s premiere post production facilities, has installed Teranex VC100 video processors as part of a massive project converting various classic television shows, such as “I Love Lucy” and “Gilligan’s Island,” to file based formats for inflight airline entertainment systems.

Installed at their Sunset Boulevard facility, SSI will use the Teranex VC100 to complete an extensive set of format and frame rate conversions on a number of television shows, transforming media of various ages and quality into the uniform format and resolutions needed for inflight television. Beyond this project, the Teranex VC100 will also be used to handle SSI’s ongoing theatrical and television trailer work, preparing trailers for use across the globe.

“Some of our biggest customers ask for Teranex by name because it ensures high quality, and we have been Teranex customers for a number of years. So it was an obvious choice to upgrade to the complete VC100 when it became available,” said SSI’s head of engineering, Gary Fradken. “With our clients, it is either high quality or it is unacceptable. Teranex not only gives that level of quality, but it is also reliable and easy to use. It just makes great pictures.”

“With the airline project, on some days we received boxes full of tapes from the 1960s, while on other days we got media with whole seasons of a show shot 30 years ago in England in PAL. Every single piece of content needs to be turned into uniform high quality file based media with the same aspect ratio and format,” continued Fradken. “The VC100 has been invaluable and handles any format thrown at it. It has particularly shined when working with media including interlaced content, which no other video processor can handle like the VC100.”

SSI upgraded to the Teranex VC100 from their existing Teranex VC300. The system joins SSI’s existing network of Blackmagic Design products, including three DaVinci Resolve color correction systems, including Resolve Control Surfaces, and 18 Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme 3D capture and playback cards. These products are used to complete color correction and post production for SSI’s work on theatrical trailers, such as the trailers for the new films “Journey 2” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

Lightware’s 25G Hybrid Matrix Takes the Matrix Switch to the Third Dimension at ISE 2012 Amsterdam

25G Hybrid Matrix

25G Hybrid Matrix

Lightware Visual Engineering unveiled its groundbreaking 25G Hybrid Matrix router at ISE 2012 in Amsterdam, the largest and best-attended show in ISE history. Lightware also captured the attention of InAVate, the leading online resource for Pro AV technology and integration in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, scoring a video about the new matrix switch on the InAVate website. Lightware U.S.A. is the US distributor for Budapest-based Lightware Visual Engineering.

With its 25G Hybrid Matrix Lightware reinvents the meaning of the matrix switch. Until now systems have operated in two dimensions, with inputs and outputs. But Lightware has now added a third dimension – media layers – and set a new standard for the AV industry.

Lightware’s new system is not only a matrix, but a complete signal architecture: a cloud that supports eight media layers: video, audio, Ethernet, USB KVM, USB 2.0, IR, RS-232 and CEC channels. All layers are supported by 25G Hybrid signal management; inside the cloud all the layers are independent for switching and extending all signal layers separately.

25G Hybrid signal architecture allows video, audio and media layers to be transmitted over a single fibre or one CAT5 cable so AV professionals can build a very simple system, which still supports all eight media layers. The 25G Hybrid Matrix has 160 inputs and 160 outputs and a total throughput of 4TB per second. It offers exceptional 25 gigabits per second data rate switching for transporting next generation video signals, such as HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2, and handling all future video and audio standards, including 4K resolution and stereo 3D formats.

Each video port is equipped with a separate audio input and output connector forming a 320×320 S/P/DIF crosspoint switch. It manages stereo and multichannel audio as well as high bitrate formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Optional multichannel to stereo downmixing is available.

25G Hybrid technology is more than just a switcher, however. As a comprehensive line of digital matrix switchers, transmitters and receivers, 25G Hybrid combines switching with a powerful suite of diagnostic software tools for the digital age, delivering a superior user experience.

CLEAR-COM HME DX210 DIGITAL WIRELESS INTERCOM BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE FOR FESTIVAL STAGE AND NORTH CAROLINA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

HME DX210’s Flawless Communications Raise Production Value for Organizations

HIGH POINT, NC, FEBRUARY 22, 2012 ─ Clear-Com®, a global leader in critical voice communication systems, is pleased to announce that the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival (NCShakes), and its affiliate, Festival Stage of Winston Salem, are utilizing a Clear-Com HME DX210 digital wireless intercom to coordinate productions. The HME DX210 gives the busy Festival Stage and NCShakes production staff members the freedom and flexibility they need to manage events without a hitch, raising their overall production value.

Clear-Com’s HME DX210 helps the Festival Stage and NCShakes staff members collaborate more effectively on a variety of duties and responsibilities. The wide coverage range of the HME DX210 enables workers to move around the backstage freely and quickly without being tied to one position. Furthermore, because it is designed with Spectrum-FriendlyTM technology, the reliable wireless system operates without any RF interference, ensuring crystal-clear audio and a secure connection for the entire production team. Not only does the HME DX210 increase accessibility and wireless mobility, but it also accelerates decision making and maximized productivity. Added flexibility comes from the fact that HME DX210 system can easily integrate with any venue’s existing Clear-Com partyline and other third party systems, offering a scalable solution for the varying demands of each classic and contemporary theater performance.

“Previously, we had a set of small hand-held two-way radios. There were several times when people had to get on their cell phones to communicate because there were so many dropouts. That’s unacceptable,” says Tim Kottyan, Technical Director at Festival Stage of Winston-Salem and North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. “We just used the Clear-Com HME DX210 along with the High Point Theatre’s Encore partyline for our annual production of A Christmas Carol and it was amazing. It was simple to get them up and running right away. With multiple communication paths available from both our wired and wireless Clear-Com systems, our lighting designer and master electrician board ops could talk on separate channels via the Encore while stage management and the backstage crew had their own dedicated talk paths on the HME DX210. The combined solution has worked flawlessly to meet our production requirements.”

Kottyan and his team installed the HME DX210 base station, beltpacks, headsets and adaptors along with a power conditioner and rack-mounted lighting unit, in a portable road case for effortless travel with it between the Festival Stage of Winston-Salem and NCShakes venues. Once at a venue, the equipment is integrated with the house system. During productions, booth positions generally used the wired intercom while the run crew backstage conversed using the wireless beltpacks.

Festival Stage of Winston-Salem and the NCShakes team members have been impressed by the portability and durability of the HME DX210 system. In fact, NCShakes is planning to use it for the Shakespeare To Go troupe, which travels throughout North Carolina and other states, to put on Shakespeare productions for school students. Roughly 25,000 students in all of North Carolina’s counties watch the plays each year, and Kottyan is confident that the rugged HME DX210 can handle the multiple productions without any problems. “It has almost bomb-proof casing,” he notes, “and I love the sealed buttons on the beltpack. The crew members like the lightweight feel of the beltpacks and how it adapts to the headsets they may already own.”

“The HME DX210 was developed with fast-paced productions such as Festival Stage of Winston-Salem and North Carolina Shakespeare Festival in mind,” says Craig Frederickson, Product Manager of the HME DX Series, Clear-Com. “As a multi-channel wireless intercom solution with a full-feature set, it’s also highly portable and easy to operate. It can also be quickly configured on the go for touring productions such as NCShakes. We’re proud that such a prestigious group of organizations has chosen our intercoms for its demanding production needs.”

NCShakes, founded in 1977, is a professional theater company dedicated to producing the world’s classics. With a mission to foster the well-being and growth of North Carolina’s people through the use of professional theater, it has put on more than 165 productions of the great classics across the state since 1977. Festival Stage of Winston-Salem is a professional theater company and affiliate of NCShakes. It currently resides at the Hanesbrands Theatre in the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in downtown Winston-Salem and organizes productions, from time-tested classics to the best of new and contemporary work.

College Hill Productions Adds HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Compact 32 Digital Live Sound Consoles to Its Touring Inventory

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Auckland’s College Hill Productions Ltd. is one of New Zealand’s largest sound reinforcement production companies, and handles most of the concerts by major international artists as well as indoor and outdoor music events, TV and radio broadcasts, corporate events and more. Recently, College Hill Productions added two HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 32 digital live sound consoles to its equipment roster.

“We had been keenly awaiting the Si Compact 32 ever since we first got wind that Soundcraft was working on a line of small-format digital consoles with a rich feature set,” noted Leon Dalton, general manager of College Hill Productions. “When the Si Compact 32 finally shipped, we jumped at the chance to snap up a couple!”

“Our primary reason for going with the Si Compact 32 was its audio quality,” Dalton continued. “We didn’t want to sacrifice sound quality just for the convenience and flexibility a digital console offers. In fact, we had found other small-scale digital consoles lacking in audio performance. The Si Compact 32, on the other hand, sounds fantastic.”

The console was a logical upgrade for College Hill Productions for a number of other reasons. “The Si Compact 32 is an easy-to-use, ergonomic, compact and great-sounding drop-in substitute for our older small-format analog consoles,” Dalton said. “Each Si Compact 32 also replaces two external racks of outboard effects. The four built-in effects engines are plenty for our purposes and they sound superb.”

Adding to the consoles’ versatility, College Hill Productions ordered the Si Compact 32 consoles with the MADI card option, which allows the use of external stage boxes and extends the consoles’ input/output and multitrack recording capabilities. “The MADI option complements our existing MADI inventory and gives us the ability to create cost-effective, live multi-track recording options for bands, television companies and radio stations,” Dalton pointed out.

“I cannot emphasize enough how much of a benefit the Si Compact 32’s small footprint provides,” concluded Dalton. “It’s one of the console’s great strengths. The console in its road case has the same dimensions as a monitor wedge case, making it perfect as part of a support band package for larger arena shows where truck space is at a premium.”

Technomad Mass Notification System Powers Outdoor Audio at Western Washington University

Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers and PowerChiton amplifiers deliver intelligible voice to three outdoor zones on campus

BOSTON, February 22, 2012Western Washington University‘s sprawling campus in scenic Bellingham stretches 215 acres, with nearly 15,000 students walking the grounds during the fall and spring semesters. The university gives prominence to campus safety, recently upgrading its fire alarm system in 47 buildings and adding a mass notification system to improve audio quality and long-distance coverage.

Mills Electric Co., a Bellingham-based electrical and systems contractor serving the commercial and industrial markets, installed the multi-zone audio system in conjunction with Western Washington University support staff. Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers exclusively power three outdoor zones at campus-designated “gathering areas.”

Technomad PowerChiton high-power waterproof amplifier modules drive live and pre-recorded messages to the loudspeakers for campus-wide broadcast. The project also marries all indoor/outdoor PA points and associated pan/tilt/zoom cameras to an existing Edwards EST-3 campus-wide fire alarm system, programmed and upgraded by Performance System Integration, an Edwards EST Life Safety and Communications Strategic Partner.

The complete system ties to a central network infrastructure, enabling administration, campus police and other offices to deliver voice notifications to any single location, multiple zones, or every PA point in an “all-call” scenario.

Cory Kovacevich, a service and project manager at Mills Electric Co., notes that the Technomad loudspeakers produce intelligible voice over long distances, ensuring that students, staff and visitors hear emergency notifications loud and clear. Each gathering area includes two Technomad Berlin 90×40 loudspeakers, mounted between 20 and 90 feet from the ground depending on the location. Weatherproof construction ensures long-term durability and protection from the outdoor elements in rainy northwest Washington.

Kovacevich adds that the PowerChiton modules deliver 500 watts of clean power to each Berlin loudspeaker in a simple, easy-to-install package. Though IP66-rated and designed for permanent outdoor installation, Kovacevich installed the PowerChitons indoors at the central audio headend for easier accessibility.

“The PowerChitons come in small, non-metallic enclosures and take up minimal space, which is important because we have limited room to add equipment,” says Kovacevich. “The PowerChitons tie directly to the fire alarm system, and are mounted next to the fire alarm panels. This keeps everything but the loudspeakers and cameras in one building.”

Kovacevich notes that the overall system represents a major upgrade for the campus, enabling text-to-speech translation and remote access to make announcements over the system from off campus — in addition to video integration, multi-zone capability and superior audio quality.

“The Berlins put out some serious sound,” says Kovacevich. “We had recently broadcast a test message from the rooftop and saw people more than 100 yards away stop, turn around and look directly toward the loudspeakers. The university is very happy with the power, sound quality and clarity of the voice.”
