FOR-A Debuts 1 M/E to 2 M/E Video Production Switcher at NAB 2012

Fort Lee, New Jersey – FOR-A Company Limited, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, today introduced the HVS-390HS, the latest in its line of compact, cost-effective switchers. Available in 1 M/E and 2 M/E versions, it includes 16 HD/SD-SDI inputs and eight outputs (expandable to 24 inputs and 13 outputs), with frame synchronizers for all inputs. The new video production switcher will be unveiled at the 2012 NAB Show (Booth C5219), which runs April 16-19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Multiple markets have enthusiastically embraced this product line, including broadcasters, educators, houses of worship, and corporate video producers,” said Pedro Silvestre, sales director for FOR-A Corporation of America. “The HVS-390HS maintains the compact footprint and operating style of our previous models, and improves the operation style with the addition of macros and pneumonic keys.”

Built-in resizing engines on four inputs allow HD, SD, and PC sources to be mixed within the same production. Four keyers per M/E are standard. The HVS-390HS includes two chroma keyers. All keyers have an independent 2D DVE channel, plus two 3D DVEs (for background and keyer) for each M/E. The HVS-390HS includes 100 2D and 68 3D wipe patterns, in addition to standard cut, mix, and wipe transitions on the M/E bus.

The HVS-390HS features a highly versatile input/output set up, including the ability to use the optional input/output boards from FOR-A’s HVS-300 switcher as well. It comes standard with 16 HD/SD-SDI inputs, eight outputs plus an HDMI output. With the addition of optional input/output boards, the system expands to 24 inputs and 13 outputs. Analog components, analog composite, DVI, and RGB can also be added.

The switcher is equipped with output video recording and playback functions. It includes an advanced video memory function that can simultaneously record fills and keys and saves consecutive stills when transferred from the user interface as video. Clips can be up to 240 frames long. And recorded clips and stills can be used for CG wipes.

Up to 100 events can be stored in memory and recalled with a single click during live applications. A built-in sequence function stores up to 100 sequences, with each parameter setting registered as a key frame. When used with FOR-A’s HVS-39GUI, information for each key frame in a sequence can be displayed on a timeline, so the correlation of action timings can be easily verified. Sequences and events can be assigned to any of the 12 user buttons on any of the switcher’s control panels.

Four still stores support JPEG, BMP, and TGA file formats, as well as animated logos. External video input and PGM output can be captured as still images, and data generated on a PC or other source can be loaded to the main unit via Ethernet or loaded via USB through the switcher’s control panel.

Three control panels are available for the HVS-390HS: the HVS-391OU (1 M/E), HVS-392OU (2 M/E), and HVS-392ROU (rack-mountable 2 M/E). The 3 RU main unit includes an enlarged fan and efficient exhaust process to guarantee silent operation, which is ideal when it is installed near the operator’s workspace in mobile production units or small control rooms. An optional redundant power supply is also available.

The built-in dual multi-view can display up to 16 split windows on either output, and different display patterns and sources can be set for each. Every multi-view window is equipped with title and tally display functions. Other built-in features include safety area and color bar displays, macro, color correction, and simultaneous switching (and output) of two L/R systems for 3D productions.

SSL Duality SE Consoles Drive Degree Programs at Miami Dade College

Two new consoles installed for film and recording programs at North and Kendall Campuses

MIAMI, FL – The School of Entertainment & Design Technology (SEDT) at Miami Dade College (MDC) has chosen Solid State Logic Duality SE Consoles to drive both film and recording degree programs at its North and Kendall Campus studios. MDC chose Duality having had a positive experience with an SSL AWS 900 installed in 2010 in the North Campus recording studio. Miami Dade has installed the two new Duality consoles to provide students with the most advanced analogue platform available for music, Foley, voice-over and sound stage recording, while offering a sophisticated, integrated DAW controller. The new North Campus facility is purpose-built for the film program, with the Kendall Campus recording studio receiving a major facelift.

“We are a learning institution that competes with other institutions that teach sound recording,” says Duane Summers, studio manager for Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus. “SSL is the industry standard, so it made competitive sense for us to go with two Duality consoles. Another deciding factor was that Duality offers a seamless combination of analogue signal flow with an integrated DAW controller, all put nicely together in one neat package. Duality was the best choice to meet the academic needs of our students across all sound recording disciplines.”

The Duality at the North Campus is the centerpiece of a new hybrid, dual control room sound studio, built to round out the program offerings for SEDT’s film program. The larger Duality room shares a soundstage which doubles as a classroom, with the other, smaller, DAW controller-based control room. The complex includes a complete Foley stage, an overdub booth and a piano booth that are acoustically isolated from the main stage so that the studio complex can be used for two projects simultaneously. The second Duality resides in the recently upgraded, high-end music recording studio at the Kendall Campus.

“Our experience with Duality at the rebuilt Kendall studio complex has been grand,” states Summers. “The install and training went very smoothly and this was important as we literally installed the console in the middle of the semester. Those students got the rare opportunity to watch the commissioning of an SSL console as a part of their coursework. Duality is now our icing on the cake for the great program that SEDT offers. Everybody loves the console.”

From a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Film, Television & Digital Production to an Associate in Science degree in Music Business, Creative Production, the MDC School of Entertainment & Design Technology integrates multi-discipline training for each program. Film or TV Production majors, for example, will spend time learning about sound recording using Duality in the more advanced coursework for a well-rounded educational experience.

“We really like Duality as a teaching tool because it addresses every aspect of production a student will encounter in the real world,” explains Summers. “Duality also has a great, crystal clear sound quality, so the students can really hear the difference between microphones or EQ settings. Also, when a student mixes a project, Duality seems to glue the mix together. As good as a mix may sound, once processed though the master bus compressor, everything really sonically pops. Duality also helps the instructor because everything needed for capture and mix can be done from the centre of the console. Students can crowd around and see what processes need to be done.”

Solid State Logic is the world’s leading manufacturer of analogue and digital audio consoles and provider of creative tools for music, broadcast and post production professionals. For more information about our award-winning products, please visit: www.solidstatelogic.com.

Yale Repertory Theatre’s New TINY FX and Viper NT Foggers Debut with World Premiere of “Good Goods”

Good Goods

Good Goods

“Good Goods,” a new play written by Christina Anderson and directed by Tina Landau, made its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre recently with fog and smoke effects created by Look Solutions’ TINY FX and Viper NT foggers. The equipment was just purchased for the university’s repertory productions.

A Viper NT is deployed for two industrial smokestacks which appear in a factory seen upstage. “They have to blow at various times during the production, and the Viper works very well for that; we can get a lot of fog out of it,” says lighting supervisor Donald W. Titus. “Look’s quick-dissipating fluid is one of the fastest I’ve ever seen; we thought we’d have to install an exhaust system but we didn’t.” A second Viper is utilized to pump fog to several other scenic elements throughout the stage.

The Viper NT fogger unites current digital technology with proven technique and power. It features DMX 512 as standard, has an internal timer and easy-to-use LED-display panel, and offers fine adjustment of the output to produce everything from a tiny fog cloud to the thickest fog.

Two TINY FX foggers are used for effects in which the characters appear to cough up smoke. “I worked with the costume designers to build them into the costumes,” Titus explains. “The hose runs down the sleeve of one outfit, and the actor holds his hand up to his mouth and coughs. In the other instance, the actor wears a short-sleeved dress and the hose runs over her shoulder invisibly. The TINYs can be easily hidden and work very well.”

Truly small in its footprint, the lightweight TINY FX consists of just two components: the machine and its battery pack. It delivers efficiency and punch in a unit that’s easy to use anywhere.

Titus is pleased with the performance of the TINY FX foggers and Viper NTs and has his eyes on possible additional purchases. “We always like Look products for our shows,” he says. “There is very little to worry about in terms of their maintenance and cleaning. We may be purchasing some more. The Unique hazer is everyone’s favorite – it seems to be taking over everywhere.”

Yale Repertory Theatre acquired its TINY FX foggers and Vipers from Dark Star Lighting & Production in Hinesburg, Vermont.
