Martin Audio Showcases MLA Compact At Apollo Hammersmith

Martin Audio's Ferrit Rowe, Rob Hofkamp & Jim Jorgensen with MLA Compact

London––Martin Audio had such a high level of confidence in its new MLA Compact Multi-cellular loudspeaker array that the company booked the HMV Apollo Hammersmith over two days for its first international showcase.

This showcase provided the proper context for the MLA Compact’s official introduction to the media and Martin Audio’s global distributor network.

In his opening speech, Managing director Anthony Taylor referred to the 900 original MLA systems now out in the field, stating that the release of a Compact version was an inevitable consequence of the MLA’s success.

“We have been working on this really for the last 14 months and we are very excited by the concept.

“It has all the attributes of the original MLA—it is an incredibly powerful system, and the fact that it is scalable will put us into all kinds of different areas. The Compact is particularly well suited for installation projects as well as side fills for the MLA and venues up to 5,000 seats.”

He added, “I think the market expected us to go to a smaller box with the same characteristics, and this is really just the start of how we will deploy this technology.”

R&D director, Jason Baird, provided an in-depth presentation of the system before the two hangs of 12 elements rigged for the occasion were dramatically revealed (along with stacked DSX subs)––courtesy of the excellent production support provided by corporate event specialists, USS.

Reference tracks were used to demonstrate different optimizations — including spoken word (Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy), Jennifer Warnes’ Somebody, Somewhere and a blast of Rammstein.

Guests were then invited to walk the room—including up to the Circle—to experience the consistency of the cellular control, as well as to the back of the stage behind the hangs, where the sound levels were impressively quiet.

Martin Audio’s North American team- Rob Hofkamp (North American Sales Director), Ferrit Rowe (MLA Technical Training Manager), Jim Jorgensen (MLA Support Specialist)—was also on hand for the launch.

Asked about the MLA Compact’s potential in the U.S. and Canada, Hofkamp stated, “The MLA Compact is poised to make a dramatic impact on the U.S. market, both for fixed installations and regional sound companies. Its light weight, scalability and competitive pricing coupled with the power and seamless coverage of MLA technology, make it a market leader right out of the box.”

Digital Projection’s TITAN Quad Illuminates Regional Porsche 911 Launch

Atlanta, GA (3-8-2012) – Porsche fans are some of the most exuberant auto enthusiasts in the world. With this is mind, how do you launch a new Porsche model in a way that lives up to the expectations of the enthusiast community? An Atlanta-based Porsche dealership and Audio Automation & Theater, Inc. (AAT), an Atlanta-based luxury AV integrator, unveiled the solution. Using Digital Projection International’s (DPI) incredibly powerful TITAN Quad projector, 16,000 lumens of Porsche as Art imagery transformed the dealership’s front façade into a stunning visual display.

For over 11 years, AAT has specialized in state of the art home entertainment. However, through their multi-faceted team and fervent love of the Porsche brand, AAT has taken on the audio and video duties for numerous Porsche product launches over the years. Recently, the launch of the newest Porsche 911 (known within Porsche as the 991) allowed AAT the opportunity to project a 572″ x 270″ spectacle onto the front of dealership as a welcoming beacon to the launch attendees. The 633″ diagonal image included custom content created by the Porsche creative team, including test track footage of the new 991 in action, stock imagery and more.

Serving as both the first and last impression made on the attendees, Kevin Collins, owner of AAT, knew that the imagery had to blow viewers away. This was a difficult proposition, however, as the projected image would have to contend with a large amount of direct and ambient exterior lighting. Furthermore, the projector would need to be rugged enough to withstand an outdoor installation with little protection from the elements. Collins had worked previously with the TITAN line, and settled deploying a single TITAN Quad for the event, due to its brightness, image quality and rugged design.

According to Collins, “The content looked amazing. Fall and winter launches are our favorites, as it gets dark so early. As the sun began to set, attendees became more and more engaged by the content. At sun down, the imagery became a beacon to passersby and attendees alike, serving as the perfect complement to the gorgeous new 911 on display.”

Numerous inquiries from those in attendance hinted that there could be similar events to come, which couldn’t make Collins and his team any happier. “This sort of event is a perfect example as to why my firm only uses DPI projectors,” noted Collins. He continued, “They offer a diverse product line, and I know that regardless of the display that I choose, I will always get the best image quality possible.”

Sound Czech: HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32 Digital Console Highlights Audio System at Czech Republic’s Jazz Tibet Club

OLOMOUC, Czech Republic – Located in an historic 15th century building in the city of Olomouc in the Czech Republic, the Jazz Tibet Club is a live music venue with an unusual name that hosts an unusual mix of performers. “By our name you would think we are strictly a jazz club, but we focus on non-commercial music and the range of artists and musical styles we present is extremely eclectic,” said Vladimir Foret, Program Director of the Jazz Tibet Club. Last December, Peter ?varc, sound engineer of the club, made the decision to upgrade the Jazz Tibet Club’s live sound facilities with the purchase of a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 32 digital audio console.

“The Jazz Tibet Club was founded in 1994 by jazz fans and through the years we have diversified to become a unique and prestigious venue in the region,” Foret noted. “We’ve hosted artists including Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglová, Erik Truffaz, Victor Bailey, Darryl Jones, Maria Doyle Kennedy, David Kitt, Mark Geary, Astronautalis, Black Cracker and Grand Pianoramax, Shearwater, Taylor McFerrin, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Duke Special and many others.”

The Jazz Tibet Club has an intimate atmosphere that encourages close contact between the musicians and the audience. “We look for performers that have sincerity and energy,” Foret continued. “However, it was becoming apparent that our old digital console, a Yamaha 01V-which did us a great service through the years-was limiting the ability of the artists to express themselves at their best. The old console’s 16 inputs-only 12 of them with mic preamps-and four auxes could no longer accommodate our needs.”

When the club decided to upgrade, Foret and his team evaluated their options and found the Si Compact 32 to be the perfect fit. “The greatest thing about the console is how it combines the best from both the analog and the digital approach.” Foret said. “While some digital consoles require you to go through layers of menus, everything is easily accessible on the Si Compact 32. Working on this console is extremely intuitive and comfortable.”

“Really, there is nothing about the Si Compact 32 that can limit us, or any sound engineer,” Foret continued. “The console has an amazing number of inputs and busses that are sufficient for any application I can imagine, and all the inputs and busses are equipped with very high quality dynamic processors and equalization, which is an important ‘real-world’ feature. I also really like the fact that you get all this functionality in a really compact size that doesn’t take up much space in the club and only one person needs to carry it.”

With the new V2 software upgrade for Soundcraft’s Si Compact series, Foret is getting even more mileage out of the console. “We’re now running the latest V2 software, which gives us features like the ability to copy and paste channels and busses and set up assignable fader layers, and its vast amount of built-in digital signal processing,” he said.

There is nothing we could complain about,” Foret concluded. “The Si Compact 32 is fast, reliable and user-friendly. We love it!”

Carl Tatz Design’s PhantomFocus™ System Goes to School

— Personal studio design guru Carl Tatz shares his design secrets and acclaimed PhantomFocus™ System expertise with students and staff at Berklee College of Music and SAE Nashville, as well as contributing a chapter to Bobby Owsinski’s new tome The Studio Builder’s Handbook —

Nashville, TN: “Carl Tatz has used his previous experience as a studio owner to become not only one of the most forward-looking studio designers today, but an innovator in monitoring technology as well. His PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) monitor tuning protocol is quickly becoming the standard by which all others are measured,” quotes bestselling author and music/technology advisor Bobby Owsinski, who has dedicated an entire chapter in his latest textbook, The Studio Builder’s Handbook, based on a point that Carl Tatz, noted personal studio designer and creator of the PFS, drives home with knowledgeable stealth and experience: “There is nothing more important in a control room than the accuracy of your monitoring.”

Tatz also comments about his recent invitations to lecture at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Nashville, Tennessee branch of SAE: “I try to give them something practical they can take with them and use right away in their own home studios.”

“Carl was so gracious to come speak with our senior audio students at SAE Nashville during Acoustics class. The students were very excited to hear about the PhantomFocus System, and the information Carl shared provided an unparalleled educational experience for our students,” comments Crystal Armentrout, Director of Education, SAE Nashville.

Rob Jaczko, Chairman of the Production and Engineering Department at Berklee, recalls, “I thought the students asked some great questions and learned a lot also.”

“There are quite a few things you can do to improve your home studio monitoring that are really quite simple and very rewarding if you are willing to take the initiative to calculate your monitoring position relative to the room’s acoustic peaks and nulls and deal with the first reflection points relative to what I call the Null Positioning Ensemble™,” instructed Tatz.

When Tatz extends this information to its logical end, adding many steps including various decoupling and isolation modules, subwoofer system and powerful DSP, the result is what he has achieved with the PhantomFocus System. “A lot of what I do is about myth-busting, and I’ve broken quite a few in developing the PhantomFocus System, choosing to rely on physics and the resulting sonic performance rather than acoustic superstitions.” And that performance is quite dramatic, as anyone who has experienced the PFS will agree.
