Platinum Tools® Launches New Coax Clarifier™ Layout/Fault Finder

Tester is Designed to Help the Field Technician Qualify and Quantify ‘Dark’ Coax Systems; will Determine Individual Run Quality as well as the System’s Capability to Deliver Good Quality Video at Both Standard and High Definition Levels

CAMARILLO, Calif., March 12, 2012 – Platinum Tools (www.platinumtools.com), the leader in solutions for the preparation, installation and hand termination of wire and cable, is proud to announce the launch of the new Coax Clarifier™ layout/fault finder.

“The Coax Clarifier system has been designed to qualify and quantify ‘Dark’ coax systems,” explained Lee Sachs, Platinum Tools, Inc. president and general manager. “The field technician often comes across ‘Dark’ unpowered coax systems that give no clue as to their design, condition, or configuration. Made in the U.S.A, the Coax Clarifier helps solve this problem.”

The Coax Clarifier determines individual run quality as well as to determine the ability of the overall system’s capability to deliver good quality video at both standard and high definition levels. With an easy-to-read large backlit LCD, the Coax Clarifier shows loss levels on each coax cable run and displays a bar graph of quality for each. Detecting and testing splitters for quality, shorts/opens, etc. is also done on each test. Finally, the Coax Clarifier uses inexpensive wiremap remotes that allow the technician to singlehandedly “map” an entire system easily and quickly. Cable length measurements, signal quality measurements, and wiremapping all in one compact, rugged tester.

In addition, separate wire mapping sets allows a technician to map out the entire coax system and measure the quality and characterization of the overall network for carrying services, such as high grade video, surveillance data, and HD programming. It also has the ability identify the testing remotes through splitters, showing the end location of multiple runs off of installed splitters.

Additional Coax Clarifier features and specifications include:
• Measures cable length up to 1,500 ft. (457 meters)
• Four unique tones to distinguish between respective outlets
• Wiremaps up to 12 coax locations
• Size: 6.8 x 3.15 x 1.3 inches
• Weight: 12 oz (with battery)
• MSRP: $329 – $379 USD (depending on kit configuration)

Classic Chicago Church Gets Renewed with Iconyx

Chicago, IL, March 2012…  Located in the heart of Chicago’s downtown, St. John Cantius is one of the city’s oldest Roman Catholic churches, with roots that date back to the influx of Polish immigrants in the 19th century. But the church’s parish, which once numbered in the tens of thousands, has waned over the years, and when Reverend Frank Phillips was appointed pastor in 1988 he found a church in neglect and extreme disrepair.

Over the ensuing years Rev. Phillips has led community efforts to renovate the church and restore it to its former glory. Recently the church replaced an aging, ineffective sound system dating back many decades, installing an Iconyx IC16-R digitally steerable array system from Renkus-Heinz. As Erik Saari of Wheaton, IL-based Sound Planning Associates explains, the Iconyx system brought much-needed improved intelligibility to the sanctuary.

“Like many older sanctuaries, this one was built to enhance the sound of organ and choir,” says Saari. “And as with most classic architecture, aesthetics was a concern – we were not at liberty to install a large, obtrusive system, so the Iconyx’s low profile was definitely an asset.”

Although the new system was intended primarily for speech reinforcement, Saari points out that it has done more than simply improve intelligibility. “One of the nice things about the Renkus-Heinz system as opposed to the other line arrays that we’ve used is that I was able to put in more of the low end frequencies and it didn’t disrupt the acoustics of the space,” says Saari. “It really added some nice warmth, especially since some of the priests there have really young voices. It’s now intelligible and also a little bit warmer sounding.”

The DSP-controlled directivity of the Iconyx system enables the sound to be directed to the congregation and away from walls and other reflective surfaces, greatly increasing intelligibility. “I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from everybody who has been going there for many, many years,” Saari reports. “It definitely sounds a lot better.”

Sound Planning Associates also supplied the church with a recording system. St. John Cantius church is well known for its choir, which regularly performs Gregorian chant and Renaissance liturgical music, as well as modern sacred choral works.

Xite TV Brings ToolsOnAir’s “TV Station in a Mac Mini” Online

Vienna, Austria – March 2012….  Dutch broadcasters Xite (www.xite.nl) have joined the growing ranks of users to implement ToolsOnAir’s just: Broadcast Suite into their online video playout service.

The Amsterdam-based music TV and on demand platform for cable and IPTV networks is one of several early adopters of ToolsOnAir’s  “TV Station in a Mac Mini” broadcast server solution. The company uses just two Apple Mac Mini computers to run their 24/7 video playout service.

“We replaced our entire proprietary hardware system with a pair of Mac Minis, with two spares for backup,” says Luc Vleugels, Xite’s Product Manager. “With the ToolsOnAir solution, we have a far more flexible and more future-proof solution than we had before, for a fraction of the cost.”

Xite presently runs two channels – one covering most of Holland, the other covering the Flanders (Dutch-speaking) region of Belgium. Each channel utilizes a single Mac Mini, with AJA’s Video IoXT device connected via Thunderbolt technology.

Utilizing the latest Apple Mac Mini hardware, ToolsOnAir is helping to drive the next generation of cost effective “Channel in a Box” broadcast solutions. Using ToolsOnAir’s just:play software, an Apple Mac Mini becomes an HD broadcast quality playout, automation and real time graphics server, consuming a mere 85 Watts of power and housed in only one broadcast rack unit (1RU).

“Prior to using ToolsOnAir, we were using a large black box system, and no matter how we tried to make it future proof, it was never really possible,” says Vleugels. “We finally got to the point where we couldn’t go on. Now, with the ToolsOnAir system running on a Mac, we feel like the sky’s the limit. It just works.”

Presently, Xite broadcasts a 24/7 mix of music videos, as well as a video-on-demand service, and will soon launch it’s new product myXite, a personalized TV channel. “We also have plans to schedule in commercials and promotional spots, as well as developing more graphics,” says Vleugels. “ToolsOnAir is all we need to schedule everything, and it will even allow us to implement real-time graphics. It really allows us to do everything we want.”

Lightware’s Universal CATx Transmitter Debuts

UMX-TP-TX100R

UMX-TP-TX100R

Lightware U.S.A., the US distributor for Budapest-based Lightware Visual Engineering, is pleased to announce the availability of the new UMX-TP-TX100R Universal CATx Transmitter. The latest product from Lightware Visual Engineering offers analog/digital video and audio extension over CATx cable.

HDMI has become a major connector for so many devices, including laptops, handheld devices, micro and mini. Having yet another format introduces a new series of issues, and with the various flavors of HDMI we, as an industry, need to have a strong interface like this. This solid hardware device is all about interface versatility and manages everything from HDMI, DVI, VGA and audio embedding,” comments Lighware USA’s Mike Taylor.

Lightware’s UMX-TP-TX100R is an all-purpose video and audio transmitter for ever-changing environments, such as small boardrooms, collaborative telepresence, small classrooms, control rooms and home cinemas. The new extender supports an array of digital and analog video signals, including VGA, YPbPr, DVI and HDMI 1.3 and accepts analog stereo, 5.1 S/PDIF and even 7.1 HDMI embedded audio signals. With this system, analog signals are converted to digital formats then the selected digital or digitized analog audio is embedded in the video stream. The product has a data rate of 6.75 Gb/s, handles HDCP encryption and has an HDCP enable/disable function.

Using the factory, custom or transparent EDID emulation (separate rotate switch for VGA and HDMI inputs), the user can fix and lock EDID data on the transmitter’s input connector. Advanced EDID Management forces the required resolution from any VGA or HDMI laptop and fixes the output format conforming to the system performance.

UMX-TP-TX100R can be controlled from either a touch controller or control system. The transmitter has an RS-232 pass-through option, which allows direct bi-directional communication between the touch controller and control system. It has a maximum cable length of 65m (CAT7 SFTP) @1080p60, 40m (CAT5e UTP) @1080p60, and 60m (CAT6 FTP) @1080p60.

The UMX-TP-TX100R has been designed for cross-compatibility with all the devices in the Lightware product series. The transmitter can be paired with any TP series receiver without restriction. Thanks to Lightware’s Hybrid Modular Matrix concept, it’s even possible to connect the UMX-TP-TX100R directly to the matrix router using an MX-HDMI-TP or MX-DVI-TP series input board.

Additional features include video and audio input status LEDs, selectable local or remote power source, a locking DC connector and rack mounting options.

HARMAN’s JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ Makes Live Sound Setup More Efficient Than Ever for CTS Audio

The National Catholic Youth Convention in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium, which drew an audience of 30,000 people.

NORTHRIDGE, California – CTS Audio, based in Franklin, Tennessee, specializes in live and installed sound, mobile staging and sales, with a strong focus on tour sound for Christian performers and in designing systems for houses of worship. CTS has provided live sound for Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, the Women of Faith tour, the National Catholic Youth Convention, Hootie and the Blowfish, Tony Bennett and many others.

HARMAN’s JBL VerTec® line arrays and Crown Audio I-Tech HD and XTi Series amps are the backbone of the company’s live sound rigs – and the adoption of JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ audio system design software has made CTS Audio’s job a lot easier on the last few tours.

“Our company philosophy is to build on the experience of our history, but not be limited by it and to create our future through innovation,” said Mike Taylor, vice president of CTS Audio. “Like most sound contractors, we are always looking for better ways to do things. When we heard about JBL HiQnet Performance Manager we decided to become an official beta tester. It has dramatically reduced setup time and improved system performance.”

“Before Performance Manager, our crews had to use three separate applications to access the processors, amplifiers and PA system to do the system tuning,” continued Taylor. “I would have to use BSS® HiQnet London Architect™ to time-align and EQ the PA and do any array correction. In order to bandpass-check the loudspeakers, I would either have to use HiQnet System Architect™ or the Powered by Crown iPhone/iPad app. With JBL HiQnet Performance Manager, I can accomplish all these tasks and then some.”

Taylor became aware of Performance Manager after purchasing a new inventory of Crown I-Tech 12000HD amps and talking to Eric Friedlander of Crown about how to get the most out of them and the newer V5 preset tunings for VerTec loudspeakers. “Eric suggested I become a beta tester,” Taylor said. “The Performance Manager software is a match made in heaven with the Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers. The amps offer extensive processing and interfacing functionality, and Performance Manager makes it simple to match them precisely to the VerTec’s crossover points and dig deep into the amplifiers’ capabilities, to get maximum power, signal to noise ratio and overall sound quality.”

CTS Audio has deployed JBL HiQnet Performance Manager on the recent Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith 2 Friends, Women of Faith and National Catholic Youth Convention tours. “We implemented it fully as intended as a complete system deployment and optimization tool. Everything from the integrated JBL Line Array Calculator II to the array calculation to the system tuning and monitoring functions was used,” stated Taylor.

“The ability to integrate the Line Array Calculator II software with the array correction functionality is incredible,” Taylor continued. “Having the ability to correct for any low-end buildup in the array before ever firing up an amplifier is huge. The accuracy of the predicted frequency response is superb. In essence, by taking the PA out of the room, you are able to focus on setting up the PA first, then dealing with the interactions of the room, and finally tweaking the system to best accommodate the specific requirements of the show itself.”

“In addition, the bandpass testing and monitoring functions take information and control panels that would otherwise need to be accessed across multiple pages, and integrates them into a unified graphical interface,” Taylor said. “I can live on just one or two pages during the show to make sure that everything is functioning within limits and behaving properly.”

“I will be using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager extensively on future tours. It saves a lot of time and ultimately enables us to deliver better sound to our artists and clients,” concluded Taylor.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,000 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.2 billion for twelve months ending December 31, 2011.
