Theme Park Design

Theme park expertise is just an app away with Alcorn McBride founder Steve Alcorn’s new iBook, “Theme Park Design.” Available from Apple’s iBookstore, it allows iPad users to interactively explore Alcorn’s behind-the-scenes account of 35 years designing attractions. This iBook edition combines the text of Alcorn’s popular book with new multimedia features including audio commentary and pop quizzes.

Called “a must-read for every theme park enthusiast” by Amazon.com, where the paperback and Kindle versions are available, “Theme Park Design” reveals the secrets behind some of the world’s greatest attractions. It traces the development of an attraction from its “blue sky” design through the complex engineering process to opening day for the public. “This book shows you the secrets behind the magic,” says Alcorn.

Readers will discover the ins and outs of ride control, mechanics, audio, video, lighting, special effects, animatronics, art direction and more with insider knowledge only someone with Alcorn’s resume can bring to the page.

Amazon.com said of the book, “the author illuminated the fast-paced world of theme park design through tales of calamity and triumph, sprinkled with many humorous anecdotes.” Alcorn even offers career tips on becoming an Imagineer – he was Walt Disney Imagineering’s first systems engineer and previously authored, “Building a Better Mouse: The Story of the Electronic Imagineers Who Designed Epcot.”

Clay Paky Sharpys Go Worldwide with Evanescence Tour

Evanescence

Evanescence

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are making their mark on the Evanescence Tour, the world tour by American rock band Evanescence in support of their eponymous third album. After a successful start to the tour in the US last year, the band, with frontwoman Amy Lee, is currently playing to packed houses in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Australia.

Lighting designer Dan Hardiman of UK-based THC Design is using more than a dozen Sharpys as part of the upstage floor lights. He positions them in pairs on draped cases and utilizes them for aerial lighting effects and to back light the band.

“Amy Lee is very creative; it’s great to work with an artist who wants to be involved in all the creative aspects of a live show,” says Hardiman. “The music has strong contrasting elements: Amy’s soaring angelic vocals, the crunchy guitars, the haunting piano sections, the ethereal orchestral accents. So it’s important that the light show reflect the juxtaposition between them.”

He reports that, “all elements of the lighting design have been chosen for their impact and compact stage footprint. Downstage on the floor are several vertical auto-truss towers full of wash lights for my side wash. Upstage are several five-foot towers with wash lights to back light the band. Between these are pairs of Sharpies for aerial effects and low beams. The roof is a standard rock ‘n roll layered truss rig with PARs, ACLs, moving lights, blinders and strobes.”

Hardiman notes that the rig has had several incarnations, depending on the type of venue from stadiums and arenas to more intimate theaters and clubs. He boosts the number of Sharpy floor lights if the stage is bigger than 50 feet wide.

The core element of the show, he says, is the back lit backdrop, which was adapted from Amy Lee’s idea of recreating the album artwork: the band’s name with lights coming from behind it. Hardiman figured out how to achieve this with soft goods and a huge gobo of the band’s logo. The band does not like strong key light and is kept fairly moody, a look that Hardiman balances with intensive moving light effects.

Hardiman was introduced to Clay Paky Sharpys last summer on the Goo Goo Dolls USA shed tour when he chose them as a lightweight fixture whose beam he could see in daylight. “I had 17 of them around a motion-controlled horseshoe truss,” he recalls. “I fell in love with them, as did everyone who saw them. We did a few indoor shows, and their brightness, movement, speed and color temperature made them stand out from the rest of the rig. They held their own happily against 1200W fixtures and greater. There’s no other fixture that offers a similar impact with such a compact size and weight and low power.”

Having had a positive experience with them on the Goo Goo Dolls tour, Hardiman says, “the Sharpys were the obvious choice for me to use on Evanescence as the floor-beam fixture.”

During last summer’s Goo Goo Dolls tour only one Sharpy required servicing in six weeks, he notes. “They are performing great on Evanescence. We have a 100 percent success rate currently.”

On the US legs of the Evanescence Tour the Clay Paky Sharpys were provided by Epic and LMG Touring. A.C.T Lighting is the North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re pleased to see the Sharpy on so many Rock and Roll tours internationally and we’re glad that Mr. Hardiman is having so much success with the fixtures.”

Broadcast Networks Delivers A Unique Operational Area For Arqiva

Systems Integration specialist Broadcast Networks has supplied Arqiva with a new operational area within its Chalfont Grove Media Centre to monitor and control the playout services supported from the facility. Arqiva provides much of the infrastructure and services behind television and radio channels in the UK and internationally.

Designed to the highest specifications, the new area enables Arqiva to achieve greater operational efficiency and provides room for the company to expand its playout business in the future.

As one of the UK’s leading system integrators, Broadcast Networks was ideally placed to tackle this project. With more than 20 years’ experience, Broadcast Networks specialises in the design and implementation of HD and SD Master Control Rooms, studio systems, Outside Broadcast vehicles, On Location communications, satellite uplinks and facilities for streaming media.

Paul Wallis, Sales Director for Broadcast Networks, says: “As well as allowing room for future expansion of its services, Arqiva’s European Playout Centre needed to reflect the company’s position as an internationally renowned provider of broadcast and media services. The design brief was an important part of this assignment as Arqiva wanted to distinguish itself from the competition by creating a facility that would immediately appeal to its top tier customers.”

Kevin Hunt, Arqiva’s Project Manager, says he is delighted with the results that Broadcast Networks has achieved.

“The new European Playout Centre looks stunning and reinforces Arqiva’s reputation for delivering high quality playout services,” he says.

Broadcast Networks was responsible for the entire project management, including interior design, construction, CDM/health and safety supervision, systems integration and equipment and furniture installation. The company worked in partnership with interior designers Design Original, construction group Hi-Tec Building Services and technical furniture manufacturers Custom Consoles to create a space that was modern and functional as well as dynamic.

“When it comes to visual impact, Arqiva’s new European Playout Centre really has the wow factor,” Broadcast Networks’ Project Manager Matthew Slater adds. “The playout suite is adjacent to the Media Centre’s reception, which has a large picture window, glass walled corridors and a mezzanine floor where visitors view the operators as they carry out their technical duties. Large scale graphics create a visual link between the interior design of the playout suite and the Media Centre’s reception and this overall graphic style, influenced by the circular nature of the desk layout, presents a professional and dynamic feel in a soft, friendly and open way. We have used a matrix of dots instead of large blocks of solid colour to relax the eye and ensure that both visitors and operational staff experience a positive, modern, open, light and airy space that is immediately recognisable.”

The new playout suite incorporates a horseshoe-shaped main control desk accommodating three operator positions. There is also room for a future operator position and an engineering position. A smaller desk facing the main control desk accommodates the TX supervisor. Both desks incorporate LED lighting that dramatically illuminates the legs of the desk.

Four monitor stacks, each comprising four portrait-mounted large format 52” JVC LCD screens, are positioned in front of each of the operator positions. Underneath each monitor stack is a storage unit with three 19” rackmount bays for mounting the PCs associated with the operational positions. In the corner of the room, out of sight behind a monitor stack, are three equipment racks with lockable rear doors integrated into the reception area’s dividing wall. This storage ensures the operational space is kept as free as possible from technical ‘clutter’ to maintain the futuristic, streamlined look.

Matthew Slater says: “Broadcast Networks supplied various monitoring equipment including the new JVC monitors. The rest of the equipment was migrated from Arqiva’s previous playout facility whilst all services remained on-air. To maintain the light and spacious feel, thin bezeled monitors are mounted on an unobtrusive monitor stack to give the impression that they are floating in the air. This, combined with the unusual furniture and overall colour scheme, is very effective and creates an environment that is unlike any other control room.”

Arqiva’s Media Centre currently monitors over 50 channels, and room for expansion has been built into the design. The European Playout Centre was officially opened earlier this month and is now in use 24 hours a day.

Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM to Debut Two Breakthrough HDTV Lenses at NAB 2012

U.S. Debut of HA19x7.4BERM Premier ENG/EFP and XA19x7.4BESM-D8 Studio/Field Lens

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division has announced that two compact HD lenses, each featuring technical firsts in their size, will make their U.S. debut in Booth C7525 at the 2012 NAB show, which runs from April 14th-19th in the Las Vegas Convention Center. The two new HDTV lenses, which expand their respective product lines, are the HA19x7.4BERM/BERD 2/3-inch Premier Series high-performance HD ENG/EFP production lens and the XA19x7.4BESM-D8 compact, HDTV studio and field box-style lens.

First introduced at IBC 2011, the two lenses both with 19x zoom ratios, are the first in such a compact size to feature three floating zoom groups and Aspherics, which combine to produce unsurpassed optical performance. They also feature the latest EBC coating, resulting in richer colors and improved blue response and transmittance.

The XA19x mini-box lens offers automatic compensation of focus breathing. This mechanism synchronizes the zoom movement to the focus movement, enabling the image size to remain constant when focusing – a must in episodic production.

“The advanced features we’ve built into these lenses are extremely important in the HDTV/big screen era as television viewers can see much more picture detail—including information in the corners of the screen—than ever before,” explained Thom Calabro, Director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division.

“For this reason, it’s vital to have consistent resolution from edge to edge,” Calabro added. “These two new lenses expand our product portfolio with capability and superb optical performance that is ideal for high-end HDTV production. With 16-bit encoders and 2.2X extenders as standard features, these new 19X lenses ensure precision performance even in the most demanding HD production applications.”

Weighing only 3.3kg, the lightweight HA19x7.4BERM/BERD 2/3-inch lens is ideally suited to the rigors of high-end ENG/EFP HDTV production, including entertainment, news, sports, and documentaries. A new ergonomic grip reduces operator fatigue, and the lens can be ordered with manual or servo focus and zoom.

The XA 19×7.4BESM-D8 is ideally suited to live studio production, such as live news, sports, and entertainment. With features like RS-232 control and tally lights, it can also be used in conjunction with virtual reality studio sets and robotic camera systems. Both the XA19x7.4BESM-D8 and HA19x7.4BERM/BERD lenses have advanced diagnostics to keep them working reliably, as well as a short “MOD” or minimum object distance of 0.55mm, which allows shooting at closer distances.

With the 2.2X extender as standard, both lenses give users zoom capabilities and reach comparable to that of FUJINON HA23X lenses. Their inherent advanced optics also compensate for aberrations throughout the entire zoom range, with dramatic reduction in geometric distortion on the wide side of the focal range for superior optical performance.
