Sierra Cinemas Makes the Move to Digital With Ease Thanks to Christie

Christie® has announced that the 4-screen Sierra Cinemas in Grass Valley, California is the latest among the many regional and local exhibitors making the move into the 21st century of entertainment with the installation of the world’s most popular DLP Cinema® projectors from Christie.

“We chose Christie because we believe in the quality of their products. We appreciate the flexibility built into their projectors – the ease in using the menus, and settings that can be adjusted quickly and easily,” said Michael LaMarca, general manager of Sierra Cinemas. “As well, we opted for the Christie VPF Program because it fits our unique circumstances, allowing us to fast track our digital cinema conversions.”

The Future Looks Bright
Sierra Cinemas has been in the business of creating exceptional movie experiences for customers since Mike and Barbara Getz opened their first theater in 1989. Starting the digital conversion of equipment in 2009 with the installation of a 3D projector, Sierra Cinemas has maintained their high standard of entertainment while successfully embracing the digital revolution.

Following the phenomenal success of the blockbuster “Avatar,” Sierra Cinemas upgraded a second auditorium to digital 3D, installing a Christie CP2000-ZX® to present “Alice in Wonderland.” Working with dealer/installer American Cinema Equipment (ACE), a certified Christie partner, they then completely digitized the rest of their screens, enabling them for 3D, using Christie Solaria™ Series projectors.

Christie VPF – Virtually Irresistible
Sierra Cinemas contracted for Christie’s VPF Program because it was designed for exhibitors who want the most independence in planning a digital cinema conversion. Supported by all the major Hollywood studios, the program allows exhibitors to make the move to DCI Compliant digital cinema simply and cost-effectively.

“We are committed to providing independent theaters the same opportunity larger chains take advantage of when converting to digital cinema,” said Craig Sholder, vice president, Christie Entertainment Solutions. “Our VPF Program aims to work with each theater individually every step of the way to ensure the ideal projectors and financing options are chosen.”

Sierra Appreciates Christie’s Managed Services
LaMarca is also impressed with Christie’s service and support. “It was absolutely a major deciding factor. Christie is serious about service, and they are responsive and professional.”

Christie Managed Services was engaged to provide Sierra Cinemas with remote monitoring and comprehensive maintenance, with round-the-clock support through Christie’s Network Operations Center (NOC), along with preventative servicing and on-site emergency response.

“Christie is there when we need them. We selected Christie for three very different cinemas, because they represented our interests and were willing to work with us. Now that we have ‘the whole kit and caboodle,’ we feel pretty confident going forward,” LaMarca added.

HARMAN’s AKG DMS70 Digital Wireless Microphone System Launches In Europe At Musikmesse

FRANKFURT, Germany – Highlighting the latest in digital wireless capabilities, HARMAN’s AKG DMS70 – a true uncompressed digital wireless system – makes its European debut at Musikmesse 2012. The DMS70 operates with 24bit 48 kHz transmission in the 2.4GHz ISM band, a worldwide license-free frequency range, to ensure top-quality audio for every customer.

“HARMAN’s AKG DMS70 system offers exceptional studio-quality sound thanks to its uncompressed digital audio transmission capability,” said Thomas Umbauer, Product Manager, AKG. “The DMS70 is designed for the most exacting applications where the highest level of wireless audio performance is required. It is especially recommended for guitar and bass because of its ideal frequency response between 20 Hz to 20 kHz.”

DMS70 is ideal for live sound, club sound, conferences, seminars and school and universities – whenever quick and easy setup up is required. The entire DMS70 package includes: AKG’s DSR70 Quattro or DSR70 Dual Receiver, DPT70 Digital Pocket Transmitter and DHT70 Digital Handheld Transmitter, available with patented D5 acoustics or DHT70 Perception with standard supercardioid capsule. The DSR70 Quattro includes a rack mount kit, power supply and other accessories. DMS70 systems are fully compatible – able to be customized and combined for any customer’s needs.

All DMS70 devices are available separately or in the following prepared packages: The Vocal Set, Instrumental Set and the mixed version of Vocal/Instrumental Set . The Quattro sets include two digital transmitters and the Dual sets, one digital transmitter.

All DMS70 devices feature bidirectional communication between the transmitter and receiver. The dynamic frequency selection provides “intelligent” operation in the crowded 2,4 GHz band, enabled by digital diversity from receiver and transmitter side. Its easy setup functions make the system simple to use, even for less experienced operators, while the AES 128-bit encryption ensures secure 2-way wireless communication.

The DSR70 Quattro receiver can work with up to four channels of audio in parallel, which can be mixed down directly to its balanced XLR sum output. The DHT70 mic employs AKG’s patented dynamic D5 capsule to deliver outstanding sound quality with less feedback and handling noise.

Based on the bidirectional communication DMS70 offers a number of additional new and unique features, including power off from receiver side for all connected transmitters, battery status monitoring, adjustable mic/guitar input level (DPT70), high/low level gain switch (DHT70) and more.

Dixon High School Reaches New Level Of Education With XPAND 3D Technology

HOLLY RIDGE, North Carolina – Dixon High School, part of the Onslow County School District in North Carolina, is realizing the benefits of learning in 3D with the help of XPAND 3D. Dixon High School recently purchased XPAND systems to provide a more engaging learning experience for its students in subjects like Biology, where 3D content offers greater depth and detail.

Dixon High School purchased XPAND 3D Educational products through Skylink with the help of Andy Canady, President of Skylink. XPAND 3D’s Educational Kit includes XPAND DLP®-Link 3D Glasses (which work seamlessly with all 3D-ready DLP projectors) and a library full of educational 3D content for every subject.

Jason Chambers, Biology Teacher at Dixon High School, is quite pleased with the results that he has seen since he started using the 3D material in October 2011. He has employed XPAND’s 3D content, including Designmate 3D technology, in almost all of his instruction, whether it is an introduction before diving into a new subject, teaching the subject itself or even as a refresher after a section is completed.

“It’s been a dream using the software. It not only helps the kids but the teachers are also enjoying it, especially when they see the test results. In General Biology alone there has been a more than 50 percent improvement in test scores. Our Principal is ecstatic,” Mr. Chambers said.

In North Carolina, a student has to score a level 3 (mastery of concepts) or 4 (superior understanding and clearly proficient in concept) on a statewide testing exam to be considered efficient. All classes taught by Mr. Chambers including those with EC students received 100 percent proficiency using the 3D material. In an Honors class taught by Mr. Chambers, he had 12 students score 4 in a class of 21 students. “Those types of scores are unheard of!” Mr. Chambers added. “Normally I’m lucky to get four or five 4’s in a class of 30 students, so the numbers speak for themselves.”

“The content overlaps seamlessly with our core curriculum,” Mr. Chambers said. “All the videos are under 10 minutes long so they don’t take away from my lesson plans either, they just significantly add value.”

Not only does the 3D content engage students on a higher level than Mr. Chambers has ever seen, but he also feels that high level of engagement translates into greater comprehension and retention of the information presented. “Students are grasping the material much quicker than with traditional methods,” Mr Chambers said.

Mr. Chambers noted that the 3D content is ideal for subjects like Biology, where 3D content showing DNA, mitosis or cell division can help explain the concept better than a 2D picture. “Being able to fly through a cell and watch the actual process as it happens is amazing,” he said.

Where students often get restless when a video is being played, Mr. Chambers noticed the opposite effect with the presentation of 3D content. “I can hear a pin drop in the room when we’re watching a 3D video. Kids are attentive and focused and actually entertained by what they are watching. I had never seen that before,” he said.

According to Mr. Chambers, even the quality of XPAND’s active-shutter 3D technology is apparent to the students. “The kids even enjoy it more than the passive 3D they see in the movie theater,” he noted. “They recognize the difference of the active technology that XPAND 3D uses and how it eliminates strain on the eyes and headaches. I explain the differences in the technology to them and show how the light enters the eyes differently. It’s a lesson within itself.”

“3D has been a tremendous asset for me,” Mr. Chambers concluded. “I don’t have to change the way I teach, I’ve had outstanding results with the content and I feel confident that the students are absorbing what I am teaching.”
