HARMAN Appoints Paul Shorter to Technical Services Manager for Soundcraft, Studer and AKG

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN has appointed Paul Shorter to the position of Technical Services Manager for its Soundcraft, Studer and AKG brands. A 22-year veteran of the pro audio industry, Shorter joined HARMAN in 2009 as Field Applications Engineer, specializing in support for the Soundcraft and Studer digital console ranges. In addition to his new position of Technical Services Manager, Shorter continues as an active field engineer throughout the continental United States and provides technical sales support.

Shorter was one of the first digital console and editorial field service engineers in the world. For 20 years, he worked closely with some of the biggest names in the broadcast and post industries, such as BBC, NHK, Warner Bros, Disney, SWF, OPTUS TV, Carlton, and Shepperton and Pinewood Studios. At the beginning of 2000 he started his own company, Backup Audio Visual Ltd., providing a combination of pro audio and video services, including sales, rental consultancy and specialist support.

Shorter started his electronics career in 1979 as an apprentice for a small TV and video rental store and service department in southeast England. He studied TV and industrial electronics at Southend College of Technology (now known as the South East Essex College of Arts and Technology), then spent six years working for GEC/Marconi Avionics testing Airborne Radar line units for Tornado aircraft before entering the pro audio world in 1989 working for AMS.

“As the Soundcraft, Studer and AKG brands continue to grow in the United States, we embrace the responsibility of scaling our customer support infrastructure accordingly,” noted Keith Watson, Marketing Director, HARMAN Mixing Group. “Having such a talented and experienced engineer as Paul Shorter already in the HARMAN fold made his appointment an easy decision and we can think of no individual more capable of tackling the challenges of his new position.”

“Joining HARMAN two and half years ago was a wonderful opportunity and I consider myself very fortunate to be presented with my current challenges in this new position,” Shorter said. “The combination of leading a great team of people to provide the best possible customer support, the ability to remain in the midst of a diverse customer base and the chance to work closely with our dynamic sales team on new projects is proving very exciting indeed. Having spent 20 years in post-production, I am enjoying the challenges broadcast and live sound are adding to my personal knowledge base.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. FOR-A to Demo New SmartDirect Live Production System at 2012 NAB Show

Fort Lee, New Jersey, April 4, 2012 – FOR-A Company Limited, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, will demonstrate its new SmartDirect all-in-one live production system at the 2012 NAB Show (Booth C5219), which runs April 16-19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Powered by a Brainstorm graphics engine and FOR-A’s MBP-1244 video processor, the PC-based system delivers high-end graphics and uses templates and automated playlists to dramatically simplify video production workflows. Introduced at IBC 2011, the system was first referred to as “Smart Studio” and has now been officially dubbed “SmartDirect.”

With Brainstorm’s Easy On Air Graphics template-based CG interface, SmartDirect can key graphics over background video internally or output key and fill signals for an external mix. 3D templates can be created with Brainstorm eStudio, while 2D templates can be created using Adobe® Photoshop® or Microsoft® PowerPoint®. A built-in map data converter allows still or animated maps to be used as templates, which can be enhanced with text or objects.

SmartDirect also includes a number of production templates for content creation. For example, select “news” and the system generates a news program playlist and material template. Operators can then edit and customize the playlist, materials, and graphics to create each segment of the program. During an actual production, SmartDirect implements all operations automatically – from switching cameras to rolling video clips to managing graphics – by following the completed playlist. All actions can be automated or some steps can be done manually, and changes can be made on the fly if the live program does not follow the predetermined playlist.

An optional video switcher link connects SmartDirect with an external FOR-A switcher, such as the HVS-300HS or HVS-350HS, to deliver more elaborate graphics, wipes, and effects. The link allows SmartDirect to control basic switcher functions, or the switcher can recall graphics directly from SmartDirect through macros and event memories assigned to user buttons on the control panel. Add an optional MBP-12CK chroma keyboard, and SmartDirect delivers virtual set capabilities with VRCAM-S software, complete with edge color replacement, filtering, and other functions to reduce noise.

A built-in clip player enables playback of multiple files in full HD, and playlists can be created easily and stored for future use. Another option links SmartDirect to external MXF clip servers, such as FOR-A’s MBP-100PD, MBP-100SX, or MBP-110SXA. With its optional streaming feature, SmartDirect can simultaneously encode and distribute video over the Internet.

“SmartDirect is a great addition to any live event, webcasting, or studio production facility that already use our HVS-300HS or HVS-350HS video switchers, because it provides phenomenal graphics capabilities,” said Pedro Silvestre, sales director for FOR-A Corporation of America. “It’s also an affordable way to add sophisticated graphics or virtual sets and simplify productions for operations with limited production personnel.”

Aaudio Imports Introduces Reference Series
Equipment Racks by Tandem-Audio of Greece

Adjustable, Vibration-Absorbing, Handcrafted Equipment Stands

Bring Out the Best in High-End Audio Components and Systems

PARKER, CO, Apr. 5, 2012 — Aaudio Imports, a leading supplier of world-class high-end audio products, introduces into the North American market the exceptional Reference Series Equipment Racks by Tandem-Audio of Greece, a specialized manufacturer of high-end, vibration-free equipment stands. The six racks in the Reference Series are fully adjustable, uniquely vibration-free and entirely handmade by expert craftsmen to enhance the performance of the high-end audio components they’re designed to support. Both the single- and double-wide models are easy to assemble and level, and available in a variety of sizes and wood veneers.

Each Reference System shelf measures 27.5 inches wide by 19.7 inches deep, by just under 3.5 inches deep, and supports up to about 220 lbs. Each shelf also serves as an independent unit in a proprietary technology Tandem-Audio calls its Metal Manipulating Vibration System. While resembling a single slice of wood resting in a metal frame, each shelf is actually a complex construct of handcrafted wood veneers around a vibration-absorbing core framed in a cast aluminum alloy electrostatically painted silver-gray.

The unusual core consists of an aluminum-plywood sandwich filled by a layer of 3.22-inch wood cubes meticulously glued to each other by hand. An aluminum plate immersed in a low-inertia metal filling is embedded inside each shelf, and hand-applied veneers encapsulate the whole. The wood cubes absorb ambient vibrations and transfer them to the aluminum plate and metal filling, which lower their resonant frequency out of acoustic range. The racks’ support columns are made of the same aluminum alloy as the shelf chassis, and are veneered to resemble solid wood posts.

Reference System veneers can be custom selected to attractively complement any residential environment. Available woods include African and American walnut, dibetou, mahogany, makore, beech, maple and wenge, as well as exotic varieties like ebony and palisander, and special custom offerings.

Reference Series Racks are available now from Aaudio Imports at suggested prices ranging from $9,200 for a 2-shelf single-width system to $17,100, for a 4-shelf double-width system. Suggested prices for additional models are $12,500 for a 3-shelf single-width system, $15,800 for a 4-shelf single-width system, $11,100 for a 2-shelf double-width system, and $14,100 for a 3-shelf double-width system.
