FOX Sports Takes Vizrt Technology Under the Hood for Second Time at Daytona 500

Bergen, Norway, Vizrt Ltd. (Oslo Main List: VIZ)

Vizrt Ltd announced today that FOX Sports employed Vizrt live broadcast graphics technology during its HDTV coverage of the Daytona 500 on February 27, 2012. This is the second consecutive season that the Vizrt graphics production workflow has been an integral part of The Daytona 500 telecast.

Considered one of the most prestigious races on the NASCAR calendar, the Daytona 500 is held annually at the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL. For this year’s race, FOX Sports used four Viz Trio template-based, real-time 3D character generators (CG) paired with four Viz Engine 3D rendering engines for real-time compositing of graphics and video. The Viz Engines were used to generate live graphics including lower thirds, over the shoulders, full screens and the FOXBOX crawl driven by real-time data of the running order of the drivers.

“Coming into the 2012 NASCAR on FOX season we wanted to make a unique visual difference, and Vizrt has helped us achieve this. We believe the Viz Artist authoring software, along with its real time 3D rendering, helped create one of the most unique analysis tools ever used in sports broadcasting,” said Zac Fields, Director of Graphics for Fox Sports.

The main set, dubbed the Hollywood Hotel, featured the Ford Tech Center, an interactive display that leveraged a Viz Trio/Viz Engine combination feeding video and graphics to a 55-inch Perceptive Pixel touch screen. NASCAR on Fox Announcer Jeff Hammond used the touch screen to explain the innovative technology and 3D car parts behind NASCAR vehicles. The Vizrt scene included over 2 million polygons running in real time on an Nvidia Quadro 6000 graphics card. Click on the link below to see the interactive display in action:

“We’re thrilled that FOX Sports has once again demonstrated confidence in our live graphics technology, and we’re delighted to be a part of an event that NASCAR fans wait for all year,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO of Vizrt. “The talented designers at Fox Sports have really taken full advantage of the Viz Engines capabilities by designing scenes that are both engaging and very functional. We look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with FOX Sports and to continuing to provide a reliable, creative 3D HD graphics workflow that enhances their live sports coverage.”

Renton School District Selects IMT and Meraki for Wi-Fi Network

Nation’s First Campus-Wide 3-stream 802.11n Network

Pictured is Stosh Morency, Renton School District IT Director.

Renton School District in Washington state’s King County selected Integrated Media Technologies, Inc. (IMT) to implement Meraki’s MR24 cloud-controlled wireless access points to provide enterprise-class WiFi to all of Renton’s 16,000 students, faculty and staff.  Now equipped with the nation’s first campus-wide 3-stream 802.11n network, Renton School District has it installed at 29 sites, including elementary, middle, and high schools in and around the city of Renton.

“We want to put new technology in the hands of the students,” explained Stosh Morency, Renton’s IT Director.  “It’s a ‘bring your own device concept’ and by having the wireless network across all of our buildings, it opens the door for projects that were never an option before.  For us as a school district, we want to provide access to all of the students, regardless of where they are in the buildings.”

“This was one of our biggest projects,” remarked Garth Gilmour, IMT’s VP Professional Services. “The deployment makes Renton the first school district to adopt the latest generation of WiFi, featuring 3-stream, 900 Mbps performance.”  The award-winning Meraki Enterprise Cloud Controller centrally manages a total of 437 of Meraki’s high performance MR24 access points.

“New technology projects always have challenges,” added Morency, “but IMT and Meraki made it much easier to deal with.  The Meraki tools made it easier to troubleshoot problems and the IMT team was totally committed to the success of the project.”

“Through IMT’s thorough research and exacting implementation, Meraki allows me to manage the network across the entire district, and I’m a team of one,” said Todd Baker, Network Administrator for Renton School District. “The capabilities of Meraki’s Cloud Controller are considerable. There’s one dashboard for everything, from provisioning APs to troubleshooting client issues.”

The Meraki MR24, an ultra high-performing 3-stream 802.11n access point, is ideal for dense classroom environments and high-bandwidth applications.  Renton is deploying 437 access points, providing campus-wide coverage for its Computer on Wheels (COW) program, which provides classrooms with “COW carts” to stream video, data and other media.

With IMT’s help, Renton leveraged Meraki’s contract with the Washington Learning Source (WLS), which facilitates deployments for Washington state school districts. Prior to selecting Meraki, Stosh Morency and Todd Baker carefully evaluated a number of networking vendors, testing WiFi range, throughput, signal strength, and interference.

The ease of use and reliability of Meraki’s cloud controller impressed Baker. “I’ve had a controller go bad on me in the past.  With Meraki’s cloud controller, I’ll never have to deal with that again,” Baker said.  IT Director Stosh Morency added, “And the lifetime warranty of the products was a key factor in our decision making process.”

ihiji invision INV-APP-500 Cloud-Based Network Appliance Now Available Through APC

ihiji INV-APP-500 Network Appliance is now shipping through both ihiji and APC

Austin, TX – April 11, 2012 – ihiji announces that APC by Schneider Electric, a global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, has begun shipping the ihiji invision INV-APP-500 network appliance as part of a reseller agreement that was formed last year. Furthermore, APC’s lineup of IP-enabled power conditioning products are now certified as ihiji invision Ready™, providing APC dealers an innovative combination of best-in-class power and surge protection plus simple and cost effective cloud-based remote power management solutions.

Under the new partnership, APC is offering a wide range of products that are compatible with the ihiji invision remote monitoring and support system. APC Smart-UPS®, Rack PDUs, S20BLK, and the new G50NETB power conditioner contain the functionality for near plug and play operation with ihiji invision and have been certified as ihiji invision Ready. APC dealers who use and trust these products will benefit from the ability to remotely monitor and control APC devices through ihiji’s cloud-based portal. Integrators also have the added benefit and convenience of purchasing ihiji’s INV-APP-500 network appliance through either ihiji or APC. By utilizing these solutions, integrators will benefit from proactive systems management, reduced service department costs, and increased system reliability. End-users can benefit from improved systems performance, lower energy costs, and reduced service calls.

“With the growing sophistication of electronics, many end-users want to protect their investments while also managing electronics systems and IP-enabled devices remotely,” said Dave Johnson, Senior Vice President, Home and Business Networks, at APC by Schneider Electric. “Our partnership with ihiji, along with deployment of our new IP-enabled power conditioners, provides a best-in-class solution that optimizes performance of equipment, protects sensitive components, and provides convenient remote access.”

The award-winning ihiji invision system is a comprehensive and convenient cloud-based system that enables proactive 24/7 remote network monitoring and management. The system is unique in that it facilitates remote monitoring and support of many IP-enabled products from a convenient and centralized invision hosted web portal. The simplified user interface includes drag and drop assignment of individual devices to outlets and power products, enabling one-click reboots of IP-
enabled APC power devices from any web browser or mobile device without the need for complex network configuration or specialized software. Real-time, two-way communication provides critical detail that enables integrators to quickly troubleshoot and administer tier-one support of power devices, networking equipment, control systems, and consumer electronics.

“The ihiji invision system allows APC dealers to quickly configure both monitoring and remote support of connected power devices without unnecessary effort or expense. The low-cost invision appliance is simply plugged into the network, and all other configuration is done conveniently through our cloud-based web interface,” said Michael Maniscalco, ihiji vice president of technical operations.

Convenience is a common and recurring theme with regard to the ihiji invision solution. “Manufacturer-specific solutions can add complexity to an integrator’s toolbox because of the number of utilities requiring specialized training and software. To reduce or even eliminate this, ihiji invision brings much of the everyday functionality under one umbrella – from centralized management to reboots and reporting. Integrators have had the ability to remotely power-cycle outlets using APC for some time, but it has historically required physical or complex remote-access to the site. Now, ihiji invision streamlines the entire process by eliminating the need for advanced network equipment or administration,” Maniscalco added.

KIMBRA’S KINETIC PERFORMANCES GO AROUND THE EARTH WITH EARTHWORKS

Kimbra’s energetic live performances and powerful vocals reproduced by Earthworks microphones without missing a beat as she tours the globe.

Milford, NH, April 11, 2012 – Kimbra is quickly becoming somebody that you ought to know. With a slew of SXSW showcase gigs, nationwide tours in support of Gotyé and Foster The People, tens of millions of views on YouTube, and a cover of the hit Gotyé song she lends her powerful vocals to, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” performed on Fox’s hit show Glee, Kimbra is bringing her music to the masses, one powerful performance at a time. And Earthworks is there to capture that sound all along the way thanks to Kimbra’s FOH Engineer Angus Davidson. Covering every instrument on stage, Earthworks microphones have brought Kimbra’s lively and moving performances to the masses as the intensely talented musical force tours the globe.

Angus Davidson, FOH engineer for Kimbra and Crowded House, is no stranger when it comes to using all Earthworks microphones on stage. “Previously, with Crowded House, we also enjoyed tremendous success using 29 Earthworks mics, which we used on vocals, drums and instruments,” Davidson noted. “Everything was miked with Earthworks microphones.”

For Kimbra’s performances, Davidson went the all Earthworks route once again. The new SR40Vs are being used on both Kimbra’s and her band’s vocals. On drums Davidson uses a pair of SR40s for overheads, 2 DP30s on snare (top and bottom), DP30s on toms, SR30 on high-hat and SR30 with KickPad on kick drum. SR30s are used on the guitar amps, as well as for audience mics, and some things are fed direct. “An integral part of sound for Kimbra and her band is the exclusive use of Earthworks microphones,” Davidson remarked.

Monitor Engineer for Kimbra’s tour is Rod Matheson, who worked with Kylie Minogue for 18 years, did a world tour last year with Bristish trip hop duo Massive Attack and has done monitors for countless other artists throughout the world. “In my opinion, Rod is one of the finest monitor engineers on the planet,” Davidson said. “He has an exceptional set of ears and is a very particular and fastidious engineer who gets great results. Rod was a little dubious at first, about using all Earthworks microphones, but after using them the first time, he agreed that these mics were in a league of their own.”

The newest addition to the Earthworks lineup, the SR40V, has found a welcome home on stage with Kimbra. “The Earthworks SR40V is an incredibly flat microphone. The benefit to me is that I can make it sound any way I want, depending on the application. Because of the super fast rise time of the small diaphragm, I can add and subtract EQ without it ever sounding ‘tubby or flabby.’ Its natural presence and tightness is quite unique,” noted Davidson. “Kimbra has an incredible vocal range from a whisper to a huge full voice. Regardless of how she sings, I can always place her vocal exactly where it needs to be in the soundscape. No other vocal microphone I have used can compete with the SR40V. For me it is simply the best vocal microphone ever.”

With a background that spans three and a half decades of live and studio work, Davidson has a unique perspective on microphone technologies over that time. “When I was starting in this industry 35 years ago there was an enormous focus on the “rise time” and “transient response” of microphones,” Davidson noted. “Somehow over the past 30 years that function of microphone audio physics seems to have been lost. David Blackmer’s unique microphone technologies have allowed all of this to work really well for the first time. Earthworks microphones very clearly illustrate how important rise time, transient response, fast diaphragm settling time and extended frequency response truly are. These microphone characteristics provide an enormous depth of field, with incredible detail over the audio spectrum, not to mention their incredible phase coherency, particularly when we use these mics on every drum.” Davidson remarked on his experiences with the technologies found in Earthworks mics specifically on a drum kit, “I’ve listened very closely to recordings where we’ve used Earthworks mics on every element of the drum kit. The detail, separation, and accuracy of the stereo sound stage is unbelievable. The drums are crisp, detailed and really natural sounding.”

“In contrast, you could select a number of other ‘Specialty’ mics to use on a kick drum and get that huge round fat bottom end with the click of the beater, but it is a very one-dimensional sound,” Davidson continued. “There are all sorts of microphones out there that do a great job, specifically on one thing, but there are very few microphones that I have ever used that do “everything” equally well, like the Earthworks do. I don’t use two microphones on kick drum; instead, I use a single Earthworks SR30 with a KickPad. This combination with the addition of a little EQ makes the kick drum really beautiful and natural sounding, with no B.S. to the sound.”

Davidson continues with this natural sounding approach beyond drums to each instrument on stage. “I also don’t want to be pulling ridiculous monster sounds for every instrument that’s on stage,” said Davidson. “Instead, I feel that we should be balancing what is there, and not trying to reinvent the wheel. I like the idea of creating a sound stage that makes you feel a certain way; by the way you mix it, and not having to make every instrument and vocal sound bigger than everything else. There seems to be a trend to create thunderous bass, but at the expense of everything else. Why would you keep applying EQ, compression and all types of signal processing and not treat the signal with the respect it deserves? I want to be able to look on stage, and be able to clearly hear everything I can see. The essence of this is to pick a microphone that will do that effectively, and then place it perfectly to best reproduce the source it is hearing.”

Before turning his attention back to the demands of the tour, Davidson offered these final thoughts. “Earthworks microphones look at the sound and give it an enormous amount of respect at the start, and that makes our job ten times easier. So, when I see someone playing something, I want to be able to hear it clearly and distinctly. The Earthworks mics make that job easier than it has ever been. They are so detailed and so clear. It’s like an artist walking around all the time with dark glasses on, and then one day taking them off and discovering that it’s ‘light out there’.”

Kimbra is preparing to unleash her debut studio album Vows to the United States on May 22, 2012. For tour dates, news, videos and more, visit Kimbra online at kimbramusic.com.

WorldStage Maps Video to Moving Walls to Support the Reveal of the New Bell 525 Relentless Helicopter

View Video

Everyone was primed to expect a dramatic announcement from Bell Helicopter at HELI-EXPO 2012 at the Dallas Convention Center. So the large-screen video mapping, which helped unveil the company’s revolutionary new Bell 525 Relentless Super Medium Helicopter, had a lot to live up to.

WorldStage, the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications, Inc., was brought on by Global Experience Specialists, the producer of Bell Helicopter’s exhibit and product reveal, to help deliver the impact Bell Helicopter required for the debut. “The launch was on the first day of the show, which was open to the public,” says John Ackerman, Vice President of Systems Integration at WorldStage. “The booth – the biggest at HELI-EXPO – was packed.”

The Bell 525 Relentless was hidden from view on an 80-foot diameter stage masked by a faceted wall that served as the main video-mapping screen. The wall, which tracked the circumference of the stage, was hidden by a curtain.

“The president of Bell Helicopter made opening remarks. Then we rolled video on screens at either side of the booth. At this point, the whole event was locked in time because there was a custom score that played from the top of the video into the reveal,” Ackerman continues.

“We rolled out of the side-screen video, dropped the curtain to reveal the 140-foot main screen/wall video.” WorldStage supplied 12 Christie HD18 video projectors fed by 12 channels of Pandora to map the industrial-themed video onto the wall.

As the video runs, the wall parted on center and rotated around on its track to reveal the dynamically lit Bell 525 Relentless in a shroud of smoke and fog. “The tracking was so good, it was almost as if we had LED walls,” Ackerman reports.

“Since the wall rotated in three-dimensional space the geometry corrections for each projector were different and dynamic. To make it all work we had to know exactly where the wall was in both space and time. We accomplished that via a hardware link from the Pandora system to rotary encoders installed on the winch shafts.”

He recalls seeing Bell employees choke up at the dramatic reveal. “It seemed to have an amazing effect on them. Flying Magazine called it “The Most Spectacular Aviation Product Launch Ever.”
