Second Location for Second City Opens in Chi-Town

BUENA PARK, Calif.— Originally making its debut in 1959, and recently celebrating its 50th birthday, the legendary Second City Comedy Theatre has opened the UP Comedy Club, a new theatre in the Piper’s Alley area of Chicago. With resident stages in Chicago, Toronto, and Touring Ensembles, Second City entertains over 1,000,000 guests each year. It was the training ground for a host of famous alumni including John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, to name a few. The UP space, which is adjacent to the original, has been totally revamped. It seats 385 and features the best in headline stand-up comedy with a variety of original full-length shows and Improv revues created by Second City Theatricals. Performances occur seven nights per week.

The new audio system includes a Yamaha LS9-32 digital console and NEXO PS8 speakers. “When we initially were brought in, we were asked to make recommendations to the then General Manager from Second City’s Toronto facility,” says Gand. “The main criteria were to use the smallest speakers so that they would be essentially invisible to the audience. In the beginning, the general manager thought that analog mixing with a big rack of outboard gear was the way to go. Part way through the project, Jeremy Smith, who has been with Second City since 2002 as stage manager for their touring company, was brought into the fold. He understood that the Yamaha LS9-32 digital console we had presented was the way to go. The console allowed for a smaller equipment footprint in the front of house booth and the capability of storing presets for every show, adding instant repeatability from rehearsal to performance.”

“A 36″ deep duct running left to right through the center of the room made for a unique challenge,” notes Gand. “This was tackled by installing four NEXO PS8U speakers over the stage and an additional pair on the back side of the duct which are delayed. Rigging was also a challenge to locate the PS8′s where they would do what the GEOSOFT software promised. Utilizing NEXO’s own proprietary rigging hardware allowed us to aim cabinets to match the software recommendations.” Two LS400 subwoofers were installed along with two NEXO NXAMP 4×1 amplifiers.

“Typically, Second City is known for ensemble comedy ala Saturday Night Live rather than individual stand-up performers like most comedy clubs,” states Gary Gand, President, Gand Sound Installations. “UP was developed as a new hybrid performance venue with an eclectic blend of comedy. You can count on a ‘topical’ show any night of the week. If it was in the news today, good chance it will be onstage at Second City that night, especially if it has to do with local politics. The menu, for you Bears super fans, includes a Vienna sausage trio served alongside an Italian beef sandwich, Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza, and Eli’s cheesecake.”

The Up Comedy Club will host Rhys Darby (half of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords musical comedy duo) and Mitch Fatel from the late night TV circuit, John Hodgman, Gary Owen, and Robert Kelly over the next several months.

Gand Sound Installations (GSI) of Glenview, Illinois, who was referred to Second City by the Paramount Arts Center in Aurora, Illinois (where GSI recently installed a NEXO GEO S12 line array) was tapped in the spring of 2011 for the audio installation of the new comedy club. Completed at the end of 2011, architects on the project were Barker/Nester Architecture + Design of Skokie, Illinois.

Clear-Com Introduces New CC-300 and CC-400 Headsets at the 2012 NAB Show

New Headsets Offer Better Comfort, Improved Sound Quality and Greater Flexibility

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 12, 2012 ─ Clear-Com, a global leader in critical voice communication systems, will exhibit at the 2012 NAB Show (Booth C8008) the latest additions to its line of professional headsets, the CC-300 and CC-400. The CC-300 and CC-400 offer extra comfort, better performance and more flexibility for audio professionals who are constantly using intercoms during the long hours of production. These headsets are compatible with Clear-Com’s wide range of wired and wireless intercoms.

Personalized for Comfortable Fit
Wearing headsets day in and day out while communicating with other team members over the intercom can easily and quickly exhaust broadcast operators. The new Clear-Com CC-300 single-ear headset and CC-400 double-ear headset were designed to reduce fatigue and accommodate individual preferences by offering a clear and comfortable audio experience.

The CC-300 and CC-400 headsets’ microphone booms can be rotated 300 degrees, allowing the microphone to be worn on the right or left side of the head. Users can also make the headsets larger or smaller by using the slide adjustments on either side of the headband. In addition, the enclosed headphones have very soft padding and a slight rotation to provide a better fit for users.

Balanced for High Performance
The CC-300 and CC-400 headsets are equipped with hyper-cardioid dynamic microphones and high ambient noise attenuation headphones that deliver balanced audio performance to the user. The acoustic isolation capability significantly reduces external background noise and with a clear audio profile, including up to 20 kHz frequency response, the new headsets are made for professionals who demand high quality sound.

Flexibility for Operational Convenience
The CC-300 and CC-400 headset microphones can be turned on and off by moving the microphone boom. Users need only to pull the boom gently downwards to turn on the microphone and push the boom gently upwards to turn it off, in effect giving the users a quick and simple mute to their intercom system.

Interchangeable cabling is another major benefit of the CC-300 and CC-400 headsets. Both headsets come with a standard four-pin female connector, but users can easily change the cable and connector at the base of the headset by using a Phillips screwdriver in order to accommodate different connector types. The same process can be used to repair and replace a damaged cable on the fly.

“Busy production staff members need a headset that they can slip on and immediately feel the difference in fit and performance,” says Stephen Sandford, Product Manager, Clear-Com. “The Clear-Com CC-300 and CC-400 deliver by providing long-lasting comfort and high-quality audio, and can be used in conjunction with virtually all of our intercom solutions.”

TactiFlex will make its debut at NAB 2012 by carrying the signal for a demonstration of 3D-4U, Inc.’s 180-Degree 3D Camera in the Gepco Booth. Among the custom solutions provided by Gepco are a 16-channel CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) Mux/Demux, a custom fiber reel, and custom panels and boxes, all of which are terminated with various connectors.

Making their first appearance at NAB, Gepco® Brand RunONE™ Powered Cables combine audio and power, along with optional data, under a single durable, yet flexible jacket. With multiple uses for corporations, DJs, lighting rigs and tours, RunONE allows the user to pull a single cable in place of multiple cables, providing a portable and neat solution that saves time and hassle. Each RunONE cable combines one channel of power with two, eight or 12 channels of 110 Ohm balanced audio for line level, mic level or digital AES audio signals and can be used with self-powered speakers or in DMX lighting control. Using real-time analytical software, Gepco will demonstrate the superior characteristics of Gepco’s RunONE cables by comparing them to similar products. The software will measure handling noise, interference and frequency performance for differences you can not only hear, but see.

“We’re pleased to not only be able to show off some new products this year at NAB, but also new tools that will improve the customer experience,” said Joe Zajac, Sales and Applications Engineer for Gepco® Brand Products.

IDSI demonstrates high-resolution Immersive Desktop at I/ITSEC conference

Atlanta, GA (4-10-2012) – Immersive Display Solutions (IDSI) recently demonstrated their Immersive Desktop solution at I/ITSEC, the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in Orlando, Florida. Previously shown at the 2011 Defense GameTech Users’ Conference, the Immersive Desktop is the culmination of over three years of detailed research and development. This advanced desktop-sized display system delivers a custom reconfigurable, curved screen display solution, intended for small footprint, single-user, immersive applications. Immersing its end-users in a 160 degree wraparound spherical screen, the desktop solution delivers interactive computer-served content to a single user sitting within a rear projected dome segment. Over 20,000 registrants, including registrants from over 56 countries, registered to attend this year’s I/ITSEC, the world’s largest modeling, simulation and training conference.

IDSI demonstrated their highly regarded Immersive Desktop solution, a high-resolution rear-projected display system with an automated alignment system that relied on three of Digital Projection’s M-Vision Cine LED projectors to deliver stunning saturated images to the screen. Software content included a PC version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 as well as Lockheed Martin’s PREPAR3D flight simulator. Featured content also included a Microsoft X-Box gaming console connected thru a video capture card on the PC running Call of Duty Black Ops, as well as a Blu-ray player running HD movie content across the ultra-wide multi-projector display.

The Immersive Desktop consists of a rear-projected free-standing spherical surface providing a 30” radius, a 160-degree horizontal sweep of curvature and a 60-degree vertical sweep of curvature split evenly (+30°/-30°) above and below the screen equator. The display can be coupled with up to six projectors offering a range of resolution from 2800 x 1000 (2.8 million pixels, 3.3 arc-minutes per pixel) up to 5000 x 1900 (9.5 million pixels, 1.9 arc-minutes per pixel). Per George Forbes, president and founder of Immersive Display Solutions, the Immersive Desktop “leverages multiple projectors for ultra high resolution, crisp imagery.” The operational footprint of the display varies by the number and layout of projectors and specific customer requirements. Custom configurations with fold mirrors are also available in order to reduce the physical footprint that can be as small as 5’ x 6’.

Regardless of the configuration, the Immersive Desktop is a unique environment that places end-users directly into the center of the action. Augmenting the end-user experience is the overall flexibility of the system, allowing for different projector configurations depending on the resolution and operational footprint required. DP’s M-Vision Cine LED projectors represent an optimal projector choice for the Immersive Desktop due to their unparalleled efficiency, vast color range capabilities and incredibly low lifetime cost of ownership. Bundled software includes a fully-integrated auto calibration solution for the warping and edge-blending of multi-channel content into a single unified ultra-high resolution display.

In regards to bringing the Immersive Desktop to market, Forbes remarked, “After more than three years of research and development regarding screen materials and screen shapes, the Immersive Desktop solution is now available to satisfy the market requirements for a multi-channel rear-projection desktop display with a wide range of configuration flexibility.” Interested parties can view a video demonstration of the Immersive Desktop in action by visiting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nYiFdulGj8.

Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM to Introduce Long HD Field Lens with Attractive Price Point at NAB 2012

XA77x9.5 features OS-TECH image stabilization, FIND diagnostic system, 16-bit encoding, dust-proof and anti-fogging technology, macro shooting, and remote control

Wayne, N.J., April 11, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division announced that it will introduce the XA77x9.5 HDTV field lens during the NAB 2012 convention, which runs from April 14th-19th in the Las Vegas Convention Center (Booth #C7525). The XA77x9.5 is well suited for use within mobile trucks, at stadiums, sporting events, arenas, larger houses of worship – anywhere a long lens would be beneficial in capturing detail and close up images from far distances.

“This is a lens that makes high-quality, long-distance shooting possible for a much wider range of customers,” said Thom Calabro, Director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. “And it comes standard with several key features that ensure rock solid performance.”

Among them, the XA77x9.5 features the company’s patented OS TECH image stabilization. OS-TECH contains sensors that detect the slightest movement caused by vibration. A correction signal is applied to the optical system, which helps to maintain a stable image when shooting from an unstable platform, or in windy conditions.

The lens’ advanced diagnostic FIND (Focused Intelligent Network Diagnosis) system aids in preventative maintenance and troubleshooting by evaluating lens electronic and mechanical parameters.

The XA77x9.5 also incorporates FUJINON’s dustproof and anti-fogging technology. All FUJINON field lenses have a fixed front element that reduces dust contamination and serves as a protection for the front focus group. A concealed compartment that contains a drying agent reduces fogging in internal lens components due to humidity. All of this helps in maintaining long-term reliability and performance.

And 16-bit optical encoding output provides high positioning accuracy in virtual environments. An advanced back focus system on the XA77x9.5 allows macro shooting from as close as 2.7m from the subject. With an optional controller, the advanced back focus provides enhanced production features. Of course, this HD field lens is compatible with all existing FUJINON EFP controllers, and full remote control via RS-232 is standard.

HARMAN’s Studer Shows Axia Livewire™ AoIP Card Development at NAB 2012

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – HARMAN’S Studer is showing its commitment to integration of the Livewire AoIP standard at NAB with the first showing of the D21m interface card that may be used on Vista and OnAir console systems.

Livewire is the broadcast networking system that utilizes Ethernet to provide an easy way to route and share audio and logic throughout the broadcast plant. Under the Livewire Limitless License (L3) introduced this year, Studer is licensed to build a Livewire interface into any or all of its products, allowing instant one-cable connection to Axia networks and products from more than 30 other Livewire hardware and software partners.

“We decided to adopt the Livewire standard from Axia following consultation with many customers on our new product strategy,” said Andy Trott, HARMAN’s Vice President and General Manager of Mixers, Microphones and Headphones (Soundcraft, Studer and AKG). “Studer is embracing a very ‘open standards’ philosophy as we launch more and more broadcast systems and this is the first of many new partnership initiatives that we will be announcing over the next 18 months to provide our customers with increasing flexibility.”

“Axia clients realize that the value of the network isn’t the network itself-it’s the variety of devices the network can connect to,” says Axia President Michael “Catfish” Dosch. “The addition of Studer products to the already-impressive list of broadcast equipment that connects to Livewire underscores just how strongly broadcasters value standards-based networking.”

Other new products from Studer at NAB include the new Studer Vista 1 Compact mixing console, Vista Compact Remote bay, VISTA FX Lexicon engine, RTW TM7 Metering Option for Vista consoles, and integral EMBER control protocol for Vista systems.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson.
