Pleasantville Church Modernizes Audio with Community Pro’s iBox

Chalfont, PA – April 2012…  Established as the region’s very first church in 1840, Pleasantville United Church of Christ has served the southeastern counties of Bucks and Montgomery for more than 170 years.Today the celebrated church hosts a wide range of activities for its congregation and the surrounding community, with fundraisers for local & far-reaching ministry needs including the annual Super Bowl chili cook-off and Christmas music celebration featuring a choir, orchestra and dramatic actors.

Pleasantville Church recently completed construction of its new sanctuary, a project that began more than 15 years ago. The newly built sanctuary is an exact replica of the original building, but constructed on a larger footprint.

The challenge of designing the optimal audio system for the space was met by designer/installer Tony Hersch of Audiobahn. The sanctuary’s high vaulted ceilings and reflective surfaces presented a unique challenge in system design.

“Services at the church lean towards a traditional/blended style,” Hersch explains. “Music worship is typically led by a vocal choir backed by an organist or piano and various other instrumentalists. Pleasantville needed a main loudspeaker system with coverage throughout the sanctuary that could perform not only for Sunday services but also at a concert level for special events when needed. In addition, there are three separate performance areas for choir, bell choir and center stage, and we needed a main and stage monitoring system that would provide coverage, impact and clarity while still remaining unobtrusive.”

Hersch selected the iBOX line of high performance loudspeakers by Community Professional Loudspeakers, noting that the iBOX line is ideally suited for houses of worship due to its versatility. “The iBOX is one of the few systems that offer a complete selection of different dispersion patterns along with very high performance and power handling,” he observes.

The system comprises iBOXIHP1299 two-way loudspeakers in a left-center-right configuration, augmented by a pair of i112S subwoofers on the stage. A distributed system of CLOUD6 and CLOUD12 in-ceiling loudspeakers covers the hallways and nursery, while the lobby is served by I/O5 surface mount loudspeakers. QSC amplifiers power the systems, with prodcessing provided by an Ashly Audio 326 DSP.

An Allen and Heath GL2400-32 console is installed at front of house, along with Ashly Protea digital EQ, TC Electronic M1 effects processor, and eight Shure wireless microphone systems. Community’s VERIS stage monitors are wall mounted in the choir areas.

“The new Community system is hands down the best system we’ve ever had, and we’ve gotten very positive feedback from musicians and congregation alike,” says Gene Fox, the church’s audio director. “We had one member of our congregation who had always used a hearing assistance system, and she came up to me after the first service with the new system and told me she no longer needed the hearing assistance.”

“The system sounds great and it looks gorgeous,” adds Hersch. “The church is thrilled with the sound quality and the pattern coverage. The capabilities of the new system also allow the church to expand their musical productions and to include more contemporary music in future services.”

VIVID Lighting Solutions Chooses Reflection LEDko

(Wellington, Fla.)—Reflection LEDko by Coemar, the first LED profile delivering both Soft and Hard Edge profile optics, is the newest product to be added to the inventory at VIVID Lighting Solutions, a company that provides environmentally-friendly lighting products and solutions to Vancouver’s large corporate and event market. VIVID Lighting Solutions uses Reflection LEDko lighting in the design of feature events that range from full-stage concerts and intimate corporate galas to architectural and private rentals.

VIVID Lighting Solutions provides solely LED-based lighting products to create custom-tailored lighting designs that create visually stunning effects. Because VIVID Lighting Solutions works in the events industry, installations are almost always temporary. Since fixtures are being installed and taken down frequently, lighting options like Reflection LEDko and other LED lighting products that can handle being on the road and set up quickly and efficiently multiple times are a must.

“Our clients often seek out eco-friendly options, which is why we house an exclusive inventory of LED products,” said Philip Guhl, owner and lighting designer of VIVID Lighting Solutions. “Adding Coemar’s Reflection LEDko to our product offerings was a no brainer—the low heat makes it favorable in any environment and our clients love the low cost of printed custom images on overhead transparencies. Fitted with traditional ETC accessories, this is a fixture that VIVID Lighting Solutions will continue to promote for years.”

Reflection LEDko is a revolutionary new LED fixture and the first LED profile capable of projecting a soft-edged profile light with no reduction in light intensity due to additional filters. It is also the first LED profile that can be used in the same way as traditional profiles and can obtain any color, tone, shade and white light.

“We had already used Reflection LEDkos many times in the past with printed gobos of company logos and have had very satisfying results,” Guhl said. “We made Reflection LEDkos a permanent part of our inventory because we are always the first company in our region to carry the latest types of LED lighting, and we take pride in offering our clients the latest in technology and the best products for their needs.”

Applying the Reflection LED technology as a retrofit makes it possible to reduce energy consumption from 500-650 Watts to 150 Watts. The LED lamps last up to 50,000 hours without loss of brightness, thus eliminating maintenance costs associated with traditional profiles.

“We’re proud to supply VIVID Lighting Solutions with Reflection LEDko lighting solutions,” said Grif Palmer, vice president of sales for LED Source, the exclusive Coemar distributor in North America. “Reflection LEDko is both portable and environmentally-friendly, making it the perfect lighting product to suit VIVID Lighting Solution’s needs.”

Because LEDs do not emit heat, Reflection LEDko is capable of utilizing images or gobos created with any standard printer and a transparency sheet. This technology allows you to project any image such as a corporate logo quickly and without cost, while also eliminating the entire gobo buying process, which was previously dependant on glass or metal patterns.

Reflection LEDko is one fixture that can virtually eliminate or significantly reduce all costs related to lamps, dimmers, scrollers, gel filters, heat, cabling, electricity and manpower. All LEDko series fixtures feature electronic 16-bit dimming, flicker-free operation with DMX controllable LED frequency from 500 to 5000 Hz and a bi-directional DMX512.

ABS Designs, Builds New Master Control Facility for KBNZ

SEATAC, WA — When Zolo Media purchased KBNZ in 2010, master control for the CBS affiliate in Bend, Ore. (DMA #193), was handled through another station in Portland. An ambitious project to build an on-site master control facility was approved in early 2011, with a firm Sept. 1 start date for 24/7 operations. With a tight deadline and no finalized plan in place, professional video and audio systems integration firm ABS (Advanced Broadcast Solutions) was tasked with designing and building the facility.

“I really appreciated ABS’ understanding of our perspective,” recalled Conor Miller, chief broadcast engineer. “We had to build a very efficient, scalable, and cost effective master control. We never got the sense that they were just pitching products. They helped us design the project in the best way for our business.”

Originally, ABS had been hired as consultants when the small market station was exploring its master control options. Before taking over the project, ABS provided a site survey, offered recommendations on space and power, and calculated costs for both the build and continuing operational expenses. “Having ABS involved from the beginning was priceless,” Miller said. “It gave our leadership team peace of mind, gave us another set of professional eyes on the project, and then gave us an advocate for all the vendor relationships.”

KBNZ’s master control was built in an area of the facility that had been filled with office cubicles. Once the walls were built, there was only a 13×15-foot room for master control, so efficient use of space was essential. Racks were pre-wired with equipment and tested at the ABS facility in SeaTac, then moved to KBNZ for permanent installation.

Based around Harris ADC playout automation, the native 1080i HD master control features an embedded audio workflow. There are two Harris NEXIO four-channel playout servers, one for each channel. Content is mirrored on both servers for redundancy. A Harris IconMaster master control switcher provides two layers of automation and integrated graphics. Other equipment includes an Evertz Xenon routing switcher, Evertz VIP-X multi-viewer, two Samsung 58-inch commercial LCDs, Linear Acoustics audio processing and Wohler audio monitoring gear, and a Argosy custom console.

The new facility handles master control for KBNZ and COTV, a PEG channel located in the same facility and operated by sister company BendBroadband, a locally owned cable television, digital phone, and high-speed Internet service provider in Central Oregon. “It was a very smooth and successful project that came in on budget and on time,” Miller said. “ABS fills a really great market need right now for coming in and building efficient, reasonably scaled projects.”

About ABS:

Based in SeaTac, WA, ABS (Advanced Broadcast Solutions) delivers customized, technologically superior solutions for broadcast, corporate, house of worship, entertainment, government, and educational facilities – from design and integration to installation and support services. Since 1982, its experienced technical staff has installed more than 700 systems for clients including Fisher Communications, Cowles California Media, Real Networks, Cisco Systems, and Microsoft Studios.
