OSD Audio Announces Trimless In-ceiling Speaker with Innovative Dual Voice Coil Design

Brea, Calif., May 31, 2012—OSD Audio, a Southern California-based manufacturer of whole-house audio products, announced the release of the ACEMK690TT Trimless, 6.5” Dual Voice Coil Summed mono stereo in-ceiling speaker. The dual voice coil design gives installers and homeowners new options for adding great sound in small spaces such as bathrooms, narrow hallways or even a walk-in closets. Once both voice coils are connected, the stereo signal is summed into a single mono stereo full range output.

“This is a perfect in-ceiling speaker for tight spaces but there’s a lot more to the ACE690TT,” notes Tim Leahy, General Manager and Product Specialist at OSD Audio. “Dual tweeters double the dispersion pattern of the high frequencies, plus we added a 4 or 8 ohm switch so the speaker can be converted to a single mono speaker and combined with a second ACEMK690TT so users have the option of having a stereo pair of speakers where only one of the voice coils is connected on each speaker.” Leahy points out that this setup will dramatically increase coverage because the dual tweeters are active in both the single summed mono stereo speaker application or when used as a stereo pair and in both cases provides a broader dispersion pattern of high frequencies versus a speaker or speakers featuring a single tweeter.

OSD audio boasts other high-end features of their new top of the line MK Series ACE690TT, including a 6.5” spun Kevlar cone, dual 1-inch aluminum dome pivoting tweeters and an elaborate 18dB crossover network with audiophile-grade components. The ACEMK690TT also features a micro flange grille with a virtually invisible trim and seamless appearance. The ACE690TT in-ceiling speaker has an MSRP of $84.95.

Dataton brings colour, movement and sound to Les Baux de Provence

Videmus supplies WATCHOUT to enable transformation of stone labyrinth onto ‘Quarries of Light’

Dataton is delighted to announce that its WATCHOUT multi-display and show-management software has been used as a core technology at a major new art installation in the south of France.

A collaboration between the town of Les Baux de Provence and the specialist French venue management company Culturespaces, ‘Carrières de Lumières’ (‘Quarries of Light’) is a hi-tech re-purposing of the Carrières du Val d’Enfer – a network of abandoned chalk-mining tunnels close to the historic Provençal village.

With a subterranean feel, the Carrières de Lumières is a labyrinth almost 200 metres long that varies in height between 10 and 15 metres. In its newly re-invented form, the space provides the perfect backdrop for large-scale video projection – a place where visitors can view images close to or from a greater distance away, while the unique texture of the chalk surfaces adds further visual interest to whatever artistic content is being displayed.

The Carrières de Lumières opened to the public in March of this year with its first show – ‘Gauguin, Van Gogh, les peintres de la couleur.’ The show, which literally throws new light on the colours used by two of art history’s most celebrated painters by projecting still photographs and video animations oftheir works, was commissioned from designer Gianfranco Iannuzzi by Culturespace founder Bruno Monnier.

As well as the walls of the former quarry, the show uses the floor as a projection surface, while a discreetly installed audio system plays a series of atmospheric 12-track musical backgrounds through a network of 50 loudspeakers. A stage-lighting setup based on LED sources accentuates the stonework with raking light at times when the ‘screens’ are not showing any content.

In all, there are 68 video projectors, all ceiling-mounted to minimize the impact of projected light beams on visitors. Each projector has its own server content running an individual Dataton WATCHOUT™ channels. These, together with a second machine running the Medialon Manager show-control system with which WATCHOUT runs in sync, make a total of 70 devices in total – all housed in an air-conditioned control room located on-site but accessible only by staff.

The WATCHOUT-equipped servers were supplied by Videmus, Dataton’s partner for WATCHOUT in France. The company worked closely with an installation team led by technical manager Sebastien Chapuis, and with project staff Mathieu Delfine, Florence Amat and Agathe Poisson.

“The project team liked the WATCHOUT solution because of its simplicity,” explains Eric Lambert, managing director, Videmus. “As well as ensuring that all the projectors receive their video content at full resolution and in perfect sync with each other, WATCHOUT also uses MIDI commands to sequence the on-site audio DSP settings so that the right soundtrack is played through the right speakers at the right time, while at the same time controlling a DMX-512 universe for the LED lighting.

“All this is then managed by Medialon Manager show-control system, which operates a seven-day calendar so that the show begins and ends every day, at the right time of day, without the staff having to worry about a thing.”

(c) Videmus

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director, Dataton, comments: “The Carrières de Lumières is a fantastic space in which to appreciate art and represents a brilliant usage of WATCHOUT. The effects created are truly stunning and we feel sure that they will lead to a greater appreciation not just of these great paintings, but also of the old stone quarry itself.”

The final word goes to the show’s designer, Gianfranco Iannuzzi, who enthuses: “The deployment of WATCHOUT and the support of Videmus during the three months of setup for this show were truly invaluable. They allowed me to devote myselfentirely to the design and content creation which, with the help of my staff, Massimiliano Siccardi and Renato Gatto, we managed to realize on time and with, we believe, truly unique results.”

Projecting Europeana archive data through the 3D ‘ECloud’

projectiondesign® sponsors Europeana initiative to drive creative use of open data

Norway’s projectiondesign® is delighted to announce that it has become a headline sponsor of the Europeana General Plenary, to be held in the Belgian city of Leuven from 13-15 June.

Adopting the theme ‘Connecting Society Through Culture’, the Europeana plenary aims to showcase innovative approaches to digitised content, inspire new ideas among its attendees, and to connect people and concepts so that those new ideas are realised. The event is expected to attract around 250 professionals from cultural heritage institutions, the open data community, and the software and technology development industries.

Caption: Vice President of the European Commission Neelie Kros explores Europeana

42113873 Watch the video at http://vimeo.com/42113873.

A key attraction at the Europeana plenary will be the ECloud – a unique visual experience featuring personal stories of World War I collected across Europe as part of Europeana’s 1914-18 family history roadshows. As part of its event sponsorship, projectiondesign will supply six F35 AS3D active stereoscopic 3D projectors to power the ECloud – creating a 9m x 3m interactive videowall that enables the browsing and display of multiple web pages simultaneously.

Pioneered by Dr Sarah Kenderdine and Prof Jeffrey Shaw, the ECloud is a collaboration between Europeana, City University Hong Kong’s Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment, and Australia’s Museum Victoria. The work builds on the large-screen 3D data visualizations being undertaken at City University Hong Kong’s ALiVE project, advancing the way that ALiVE re-uses archival databases coming directly from the internet.

“The purpose of this project is to provide both audiences and participating cultural organizations a renewed appreciation of the wealth of the Europeana datasets online,” comments Sarah Kenderdine.

“It focuses on World War I materials as a front-running project to the 2014 100th anniversary of the start of WWI. The project demonstrates that using the semantic relationships in existing metadata, ECloud can take advantage of Europeana APIs and the high-resolution content existing in Europeana partner repositories – in a public exhibition setting.

“3D allows us to re-define 2D data into a dynamic visualizations, increasing both appeal of the data and cognitive impact of the large format images distributed in 3D space. Such visualization strategies continue to hint at the endless permutations available to the user in a way that 2D designs cannot.

“We believe projectiondesign is the perfect partner for a project like the ECloud, because their 3D projector solutions, hardware architectures for edge-blending, and geometry correction for large-scale, multi-projector arrays are the most robust and reliable out there. We work exclusively with projetiondesign.”

Prior to the Europeana plenary, the ECloud made its public debut at a major event in Brussels on Wednesday 9 May. Hosted jointly by Europeana and the European Commission, the event is intended to raise awareness of Europeana’s rich resources and to demonstrate how Europe’s online cultural heritage can drive creativity and digital innovation. The event will be attended by around 100 stakeholders from cultural institutions and the creative industries.

“Europeana is a single access point to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records that have been digitised throughout Europe,” explains Harry Verwayen, Business Development Manager, Europeana. “It is an authoritative source of information coming from European cultural and scientific institutions.

“What I like about the ECloud installation we’ve created is that it transforms flat representations of cultural artifacts into a real experience. It is truly innovative approach and we are very happy about how it worked out.”

“The cultural significance of 3D and interactive visualization technology have always been important for us at projectiondesign,” says the company’s Thierry Ollivier. “Supplying projectors to the ECloud is not just about putting our name in front of Europe’s creative community; it is about opening people’s eyes – quite literally – to the possibilities opened up by the digitisation of archive content, and by the public’s open access to that content.

“We are delighted to have this chance to be associated with the ECloud and with the Europeana project generally.”

MOOVed by video as well as voice – Dataton’s WATCHOUT powers vide for Andrea Bocelli in Poland.

The new DMX capabilities of WATCHOUT version 5.2 are put through their paces.

Through the Polish systems integration and live-events show specialist MOOV working forlocal events production company Prestige MJM, Dataton WATCHOUT was used to sync and drive multi-screen video content for a spectacular concert by the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Staged on 29 April at the impressive new Atlas Arena in the Polish city of Lodz, the Bocelli concert – part of the singer’s ‘Notte Illuminata’ world tour – featured a 160 square metre LED mesh screen as its backdrop, comprising twenty 8-metre strips of Barco’s Mitrix solid-state display wall product. Either side of the LED wall were two 16:9 projection screens measuring 7.45m wide by 4.31m high, each showing images from a Barco FLM series 20,000-lumen projector.

The projection screens were used mainly for showing live IMAG close-ups of Bocelli, the most popular singer in classical music history, and his co-performers – which included a full orchestra and choir. Meanwhile, the LED wall content varied between IMAG and pre-mixed movie clippings and other effects, ranging from archive news footage from before World War II to a vast stained-glass window.

Marek Kurzawa from Prestige MJM explains: “The Atlas Arena is one of the biggest indoor concert venues in Poland and, with more than 10,000 fans inside for the Bocelli event, it wasimportant for the show to contain large-screen visual elements that would keep those toward the rear of the venue on the edge of their seats.”

Piotr Majewski, MD at MOOV adds: “By using two computers installed with WATCHOUT – one for the LED wall and the other with two outputs for the two projectors – we were able to synchronise the pre-recorded video with the live camera feeds for the IMAG content. Thus the audience was treated to a constantly shifting, dynamic video experience to match the excitement and energy of the musical performance itself.”

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director, Dataton, adds: “For almost every genre of music, today’s concert-goers expect to see an impressive show, as well as hear one. WATCHOUT allows multiple video content channels to be combined together into a single timeline with complete reliability, regardless of the size of the screens involved or thetechnology they use.

“To complete the picture, as it were, we are also able to sync pre-recorded audio content via MIDI and lighting-control commands via DMX – effectively making WATCHOUT a ‘one-stop shop’ for show designers all over the world!”

Mix Engineer Jonathan Freed Uses SoundField Mic From Wohler to Give Viewers an In-Stadium Sound Experience

As U.S. Distributor of SoundField Premium Surround Mic and Processor Systems, Wohler Provides Freed With Quality Mics for NBA and NFL Broadcasts

SAN FRANCISCO — May 31, 2012 — Wohler Technologies today announced that it has provided mix engineer Jonathan Freed with the SoundField DSF-2 microphone and DSF-3 digital surround processor for his work on NBA games and Monday-night NFL match-ups. Wohler is the U.S. distributor for the SoundField line of mics and processors.

“I’ve known about SoundField microphones since they were invented, and I have always wanted to experiment with one,” said Freed, who has been mixing audio for broadcast for more than 25 years. “The SoundField capsules have an extraordinarily smooth and wide response, at least equal to the very best microphones I have heard in 40 years of mixing, with a tremendous sense of detail and the sonic illusion of being located inside the stadium. The front-side pickup provides a heightened sense of size and place while the rear channels pick up a natural and convincing sense of being surrounded by the excited fans in the stands.”

Freed is responsible for capturing and sub-mixing all of the field-side audio on the Monday night football games, and he has been miking in 5.1 surround since he first began working on NFL’s weekly coverage three seasons ago. SoundField’s multi-capsule microphones capture audio from a single point source, rendering it completely phase-coherent. This is an advantage in 5.1 audio capture, as the surround ambience captured by SoundField mics can be collapsed to stereo or even mono for legacy broadcast without introducing any phase artifacts.

“Audio from the Soundfield DSF-2 always folds down well,” said Freed. “I am a fan of coherence where possible, and I always arrange my arrays so that my audio will fold down well to mono, stereo, or LtRt. SoundField fits right into that philosophy.”

Freed also credits the DSF-2 for its ability to be reoriented, once rigged, by adjustment of the mic’s control box. “If you get an unexpectedly loud section of the crowd in, say, the right rear of the soundstage, you can tip the microphone away from that area electronically. Before I had the DSF-2, I had to shut off one mic array to achieve the same thing, and that could unbalance the sound.”

Further information about SoundField products and other products offered by Wohler Technologies is available at www.wohler.com.
