Western Carolina University Upgrades Ramsey Activity Center With HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers

NORTHRIDGE, California – Western Carolina University’s Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center hosts the University’s basketball and volleyball teams as well as a variety of special events and concerts. Although rich in tradition, WCU’s administrators recently recognized that older isn’t always better, calling on consulting firm Acoustical Design Group to help upgrade the sound system at the Ramsey Center with HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers.

Acoustical Design Group worked directly with WCU to come up with an ideal audio system for the Center, which was installed by Raleigh, North Carolina-based contractor Strategic Connections. “Right from the start, we were able to talk with the University about the best products for the new system,” said Ian Wolfe of Acoustical Design Group. “It was apparent the University had a preference for JBL loudspeakers, as did we.”

The system upgrade began with replacing the center cluster with JBL PD5212/95 loudspeakers in a 360-degree arrangement. “The PD5212/95 is ideal for this purpose because it delivers high output with excellent pattern control,” Wolfe said. “Because the University wanted to maintain this center cluster for its basketball and volleyball games, we used the existing framework and winching system.”

Because the center cluster is near the scoreboard above the middle of the court, supplemental PD5212/95 loudspeakers were added to fill in the acoustic shadow created by the scoreboard, along with several JBL AM7212 loudspeakers for additional downfill.

The system upgrade went beyond replacing the existing center cluster, however. “WCU wanted a system that would accommodate University-based activities such as convocations and conferences along with concerts by regional artists who previously had to bring in rental systems,” Wolfe noted.

Wolfe and his team decided on JBL VERTEC(r) VT4887A compact line array elements, along with a stack of six ASB6128 subwoofers. “This system does double duty-when it’s not used for concerts, it can be moved to a different location for sporting events,” Wolfe said. “We had Strategic Connections rig the speakers to a system of chain motors and cables that allow the staff to move them to the required location without having to bring in riggers.”

In addition to concerts, sporting events, and conferences, the Ramsey Activity Center hosts student orientations at the beginning of each school year. “For orientations, WCU places a stage on the floor to create a ‘mini auditorium.’ For this application, the full VERTEC system would be overkill, so two JBL CBT 100LA column speakers mounted right into the existing lighting truss provide adequate coverage for about 1,000 people,” Wolfe added.

To complete the installation, JBL Control 26CT in-ceiling speakers were placed throughout the concourse. “WCU wanted the ability to send an independent audio feed to this area for trade shows, banquets and other activities,” Wolfe said. “The concourse also overlooks the football stadium and, during games, some spectators are seated in the concourse area. The concourse loudspeakers provide stadium sound during those games.”

“We’re very happy with the sound as is WCU, and Strategic Connections did a great job in keeping everything within budget and installing everything exactly according to plan,” Wolfe concluded.

This past March WCU installed its newest Chancellor using the “RAC” as the location for the ceremony. The show consisted of a 60-piece orchestra, 30-voice choir, brass quintet, regimental drum recessional, podium mics, national anthem mic, and three wireless lapel microphones. This, to many at WCU, was the most important event to occur on campus in 17 years (since the last installation ceremony). Ryan Fisher of WCU reported, “The arena sounded like a digital cinema soundtrack. Everyone was thrilled and there were plenty of compliments. The system performed absolutely perfectly.”

NEP Studios Selects Autoscript Teleprompting Gear to Help Automate Newsroom and Studio Productions in New York

SHELTON, CT, MAY 8, 2012—NEP Studios, a division of NEP Broadcasting, LLC, and one of the largest independent providers of studio production and post-production facilities in Manhattan, recently purchased a quantity of Autoscript equipment for use at its Studio 33, Studio 52, Studio 54, 5th Avenue Studio and Midtown Studio locations. By selecting teleprompters and prompting software from Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and the world’s leading teleprompting company, NEP Studios is able to streamline and help automate the variety of productions it works on.

Known for its premier talent and technical expertise, NEP Studios recently purchased a series of 17- and 19-inch teleprompter monitors (LED17TFT and LED19TFT, respectively), 15-inch talent monitors, +ClockPlus+ timecode displays and +WinPlus-News+ software from Autoscript for use in five of its nine state-of-the-art studio facilities in Manhattan. Autoscript’s LED17TFT and LED19TFT wide-angle, on-camera prompters incorporate the latest in Autoscript’s illumination technology, the TFT (thin-film transistor) LED system. Unlike CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes), which take many minutes to reach full efficiency and light output, the LED17TFT and LED19TFT offer instant warm-up to full brightness. In addition, these on-camera teleprompters come with a wide-angle hood, making them optimal for news- or studio-based productions.

“The equipment is being used in various ways, from a standard prompting system with talent monitor and clock showing running time, to a more sophisticated solution integrated with the Avid iNEWS or ENPS systems, depending on the installation,” says Frank Lanzer, senior engineer and project engineering manager for NEP Studios. Autoscript’s +WinPlus-News+ software is a powerful and versatile prompting package that features user-friendly drop-down menus and configurable display options. The +WinPlus News+ package comes complete with a configurable five-button Deskpad Optical Scroll Control and a PCI Promptcard, which provides two video outputs (PAL/NTSC) and Genlock option. Autoscript now also offers the WinPlus PCI card with an optional SDI card with five video outputs.

+WinPlus-News+ is compatible with all leading newsroom systems, including ENPS and iNEWS, which allows NEP Studios to integrate show rundowns and clip information. The incorporated use of both ENPS and iNEWS with the WinPlus software provides NEP Studios with an all-in-one solution for show rundowns, cues and prompting.

“The studio setup is fairly straightforward, so we are using the complete Autoscript solution,” says Frank Lanzer, senior engineer and project engineering manager for NEP Studios. “From mounting plates and weights to monitors and clocks, Autoscript has given us a simplified, scalable solution without the need to fabricate any mounting brackets—we can quickly reconfigure the prompters as needed for a particular application.” The +ClockPlus+ is an LED SMPTE/EBU timecode display that has the added feature of changing color from green to red when a suitable Tally input is applied.

The New York NEP Studios were built and configured for the specific needs of individual clients, so the equipment used varies between locations. Typically the studios’ equipment complement includes Vinten pedestals and Jimmy Jibs, with prompters, talent monitors and +ClockPlus+ displays, shooting with either Sony or Thomson HD cameras, using Canon and Fuji lenses. What’s more, the studio infrastructures includes Trinix and Concerto routing switchers, EVS and K2 disk recorders, Sony XD Cam Decks, Kalypso, Kayak and Sony 8000 switchers.

TMP Pibrac Theatre Invests in new HARMAN Soundcraft(r) Vi1 Console

PIBRAC, France – Built in 1989, the Théâtre Musical de Pibrac (TMP) is a popular concert and music-based theatre, situated 10 minutes from the centre of Toulouse. With an amphitheatre-style main auditorium, seating 448 (750 standing) it also has a separate lobby, exhibition area, café theatre, rehearsal and reception areas. The theatre receives incoming shows as well as producing its own, with resident company, Figaro & Co.

TMP recently decided to overhaul its distribution network and at the same time upgrade its HARMAN Soundcraft analogue desk to digital, which would be placed on its new Riedel RockNet backbone.

“We needed a desk both to run our own shows and for the incoming productions-and therefore it needed to be one that would be familiar to the bulk of technicians,” said theatre director, Stéphane Novak. “In particular we were looking for a compact desk, with good de-esser and compatibility with the RockNet card for the stage preamp.”

Before making their choice, three of the theatre’s technical team reviewed several of the market leaders, but following a demonstration, placed their order for a Soundcraft Vi1 with local dealers, Spotco. This was delivered in January this year, accompanied by after-sales training from the supplier-and pressed straight into service.

The Vi1 is the smallest sibling of Soundcraft’s popular Vi digital range, which began with the Vi6. This takes the platform to a more affordable level with a reduced footprint that retains the acclaimed Vistonics(tm) user interface and signature Vi sound quality. The Vi1 represents a complete standalone console package with 32 channels of analogue input (64 channels to mix when attached to stagebox) to 27 analogue outputs, plus six digital inputs, four stereo FX returns and six digital outputs in one chassis.

“We are satisfied that we made the correct purchase,” Novak said. “We particularly like the quality of the EQ, the onboard dynamics and the routing.”

Pibrac itself may only have a population of 8,500 but they can be proud that the local commune has invested in a facility that is so highly appreciated.

Vista Spyder X20 Manages Content On Three Sets At China State Broadcaster’s New U.S. Hub

China’s state broadcaster CCTV (China Central Television) recently launched its new U.S. hub in Washington, D.C. with the Vista Spyder X20-0808 video processor managing graphics and video content and feeding it to three sets.

The U.S. operation delivers English-language programming to China and the Washington hub is the latest in CCTV’s worldwide expansion – which includes a studio in Nairobi, Kenya, a European bureau, and a newsgathering bureau and studio in Dubai. CCTV operates 16 national channels in China and claims a global TV audience of one billion.

“Spyder is very well known in the broadcast world as a high-end video processor with a very good reputation in the industry,” says Caroline Aldridge, COO and project manager for Oceanside, California’s Broadcast Design International, Inc., (BDI) a full-service, international set design and construction company.

“Everything in the three sets can change – with lighting, video or graphics giving them a completely different look,” notes Aldridge. “CCTV wanted to use the latest and greatest of everything while maintaining a clean, elegant on-air look and lots of silver and gray-toned textures.”

BDI teamed with Philadelphia-based Video Visions, Inc to enable CCTV to manipulate PAL video and graphics seamlessly across multiple high- and low-resolution displays. The three Vista Spyder X20 video processors control an array of video walls, LEDs and flat-panel displays on three sets – displaying HDSDI-driven titles, logos, graphic elements, breaking news and interviews.

“We use Spyder often for large video wall arrays,” reports Video Visions, Inc. project manager Jeff Pasternak CTS. “It’s by far the best processor out there. Spyder seamlessly manipulates graphics or video across the studios despite different pixel counts and resolutions.”

One Spyder X20 is dedicated to Studio A’s CCTV News Center set where it feeds video and logo graphics to a curved Sun Coast 4mm LED screen on the middle of the anchor desk and, across the back of the set, a curved video wall comprising 42-inch Orion flat panels in a 3 by 7 configuration. In that same studio, it also feeds a 103-inch Panasonic flat panel (with U-Touch touchscreen control) to the right of the video wall. In the News Center’s stand-up section, the Spyder also manages content on the three 32-inch horizontal and one 65-inch vertical Panasonic flat panels.

The second Spyder X20 is used for the “Biz Asia America” show and other financial news programming originating from the other side of Studio A. This Spyder X20 manages and controls content to another Sun Coast 4mm LED screen mounted to the front of the anchor desk, an L-shaped 4 by 5 video wall composed of 42-inch Orion flat panels, two Sun Coast 8 mm LEDs flanking the video wall, and, to the left, an 85-inch Panasonic flat panel with U-Touch touchscreen control.

Studio B has its own dedicated Spyder X20 for the monitors and LED screens on its news set. Here, the Spyder feeds a 2 x 5 curved videowall featuring 42-inch Orion flat panels bookended by Sun Coast 8mm LEDs for graphic displays. A 103-inch Panasonic flat panel to the right displays breaking news. On the left, vertically mounted with the ability to rotate, a 42-inch Panasonic flat panel can serve as the anchor’s over-the-shoulder monitor and display remote guest appearances. A triangular box on the desktop has white LED lighting with the Spyder X20 feeding a Sun Coast 4mm LED on the front of the desk.

An additional Spyder X20 is available in a separate control room for future Chinese-language shows.

Jeff Pasternak recalls that he got goose bumps when he saw the image quality on the very high-resolution video walls and low-resolution LEDs, and how seamless the image flow is from Spyder.

“Spyder is so sophisticated but to the operator it’s relatively simple to run,” he notes. “After a few training sessions, the operators became fluent: They can preprogram plots, hit cue and step through them or have them sequence automatically. It is impressive to watch people with no experience with the product adopt it and use it to its full potential. Spyder is so user-friendly that they’re exploring new possibilities.”

Pasternak adds that, “Vista’s support of Spyder is excellent. In fact, it’s a major selling point from an integrator’s standpoint.”

Look Solutions’ Unique Hazer Enhances Services at Oakbrook Church

Look Solutions’ Unique hazer continues to play an important role in weekend services and special events at Kokomo, Indiana’s Oakbrook Church.

The Unique hazer is deployed in two different rooms at the church’s campus, which was built in 2005. “We have been using it for two Sunday morning services and one Sunday evening service for a number of years,” says program director Jason Lee. “It enhances the lighting of our three cycs. We use LED, halogen and conventional theatrical lighting but without the Unique hazer you couldn’t see the beams.”

The Unique2 haze machine offers minimal warm up time, minimal noise and minimal fluid consumption. Its new, more efficient fan quickly distributes haze in a room, and its variable output can achieve any desired effect from the finest mist to a thick haze similar to fog.

Lee notes that, “once we decided to go with a non-oil-based hazer to protect our other equipment, Looks Solutions’ Unique stood out as the best. We could really push the room with it – it’s been great.”

He explains that the Unique hazer “replaced a hazer that we had a lot of problems with. We work the Unique hard once a week on Sunday, and we love the self-cleaning feature, which purges the lines. We used to have to remember to clean the lines ourselves with our old system.”

About Look Solutions

Based in Germany, Look Solutions manufactures high-performance fog machines, haze machines, battery-powered mini-foggers, low-foggers, accessories and fluids at reasonable prices. Look Solutions USA, located in western Maryland, serves customers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
