Tennessee Performing Arts Center Looks Ahead with Meyer Sound M’elodie after Two Decades with the MSL-3

When it was ready to upgrade its venerable Meyer Sound MSL-3 loudspeakers of more than two decades at its 2,472-seat Andrew Jackson Hall, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) in Nashville chose Meyer Sound again, this time a system based on the M’elodie line array loudspeaker.

“The MSL-3s had served us well since the mid-80s,” says Larry Bryan, TPAC’s chief audio engineer. “But we were ready to step into the 21st century with the latest Meyer Sound line array technology.”

As typically deployed, the system comprises left and right flown arrays of 16 M’elodie loudspeakers each, plus six deck-stacked 700-HP subwoofers, eight MINA line array loudspeakers spaced across the stage lip as front fill, and a Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor for drive processing. The system was provided by Blackhawk Audio of nearby White House, Tenn., with sale facilitation by director Jamie Nixon and system tuning with the SIM 3 audio analyzer by CEO Rick Shimer.

To date, the system has been used for a variety of acts, ranging from a comedy show by Bill Maher and rehearsal sessions by country star Trace Adkins to concerts by bleeding-edge rockers Puscifer and pop-rock legends Journey. A true test of the system’s moxie came when the “Experience Hendrix Tour” stopped at TPAC for an evening of tributes by musicians including Dweezil Zappa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Buddy Guy.

“We have a lot of guitars on this show,” remarks the tour’s FOH engineer, Sean Quackenbush, “and the M’elodie rig at TPAC made them all big and warm sounding. The boxes translated very well with what was coming off the stage and responded immediately to whatever I did with the console. As always, any day on a Meyer rig is a great day!”

Bryan highlights the Meyer Sound linearity and longevity. “We have a range of musical styles coming through here, from rock and jazz to Broadway,” he says. “A lot of touring Broadway shows brought in Meyer rigs, so it was a sound we had come to appreciate. We knew it was something we would hold on to for another 15 years.”

Bryan also appreciates the simplicity of M’elodie’s QuickFly rigging. “We really liked the ease and the rigidity of the rigging,” he notes. “The fact that a majority of it is captured is important. Once we saw them do it once, we realized it doesn’t take a master’s degree in mechanical engineering to figure out how it works.”

Meanwhile, Nixon, who organized a demo of the system prior to sale, was confident that the M’elodie arrays would be ideal for the hall’s size and acoustics. “The M’elodie is so versatile in that room,” he says. “They can use it for so many things, so it made perfect sense. Basically, the box just sells itself.”

The new M’elodie system was added to Andrew Jackson Hall’s existing complement of premium gear, which includes a Soundcraft Vi6 digital live sound console, Shure ULX and Sennheiser 2000 Series wireless microphones, Avalon and Millennia Media preamps, and high-end microphones from Schoeps, Neumann, and Shure.

DVEO Announces U.S. Introduction of World’s First Seamless IP Redundancy Switch – from Enensys Technologies

San Diego, California — May 17, 2012 — DVEO, the broadcast division of Computer Modules, Inc. (CMI), today announced the U.S. launch of the IPGuard failover and redundancy switch from Enensys Technologies SA. DVEO is the U.S. reseller of Enensys products.

Designed for broadcasters, webcasters, and content providers, the IPGuard is a seamless IP and MPEG-2 TS transport layer switching device that can convey MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264 in SD or HD content. It delivers 1+1 redundancy with two parallel IP input sources and two mirrored IP outputs. When the system detects a failure on one input – such as no IP stream or MPEG-2 or H.264 transport stream failure – it automatically switches over to the other valid input to provide continual output.

The IPGuard offers a bypass mechanism via solid state relays that creates 100% service availability in case of power outage. It is designed to provide an automatic 1+1 redundancy of network equipment that delivers services over IP – such as encoders, multiplexers, gateways, ASI to IP adapters, etc. Additionally, the IPGuard can also be operated to re-synchronize and re-align the same MPEG-2 stream that is carried over redundant IP-based networks. The latter introducing different network propagation delay, the IPGuard is able to re-align both IP streams to provide a seamless change-over between redundant IP streams.

“Innovative products like the IPGuard help strengthen the worldwide IP video infrastructure,” commented Laszlo Zoltan, Sales Manager for DVEO. “We recommend this unique system to all of our customers who stream video and/or audio over IP, and need a reliable way to protect their IP transport streams. It’s especially useful for streaming programs over IPTV.”

The switching criteria are programmable and rely on IP criteria and ETR 101 290 oriented health indicators. The IPGuard offers remote management, an easy to use web-based GUI, and an optional redundant power supply. It is available now and is already deployed in Europe.

HARMAN Installed Venue Systems and Portable Rental Systems Dovetail For Optimal Audio Performance At Season’s Major Events

NORTHRIDGE, California – In two compelling examples of how HARMAN professional audio systems installed at leading venues can play excellent host to temporary gear from HARMAN-equipped rental system owners, the Halftime Show of Super Bowl XLVI and the 54th Annual GRAMMY(r) Awards both relied upon event sound designs that integrated HARMAN house systems at Lucas Oil Stadium and STAPLES Center respectively, with concert-quality systems supplied by ATK Audiotek of Valencia, CA.

“The high-profile, televised events that we serve place an increasing amount of pressure on the facilities that host them,” observed Mike Stahl, President of ATK Audiotek. “Our engineers must often do extensive quality testing and even reconfiguration of installed house systems when we elect to interface with them. However, when we come across venues with HARMAN equipment installed, we are assured of a certain level of quality and performance that we can work with and rely upon.”

ATK Audiotek provided the main PA system at the GRAMMY Awards, featuring four main arrays each containing 12 JBL VERTEC(r) VT4889 fullsize line array elements, plus two arrays of six VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers each. Additionally, 12 VRX932 Constant Curvature loudspeakers were used for front fill. The newly-installed permanent audio system at the STAPLES Center, based on acoustical design support from Chips Davis Designs and a customized installation by I.P.R. Services, features multiple arrays each containing between 11 and 13 JBL VT4889DP-DA powered line array elements. Two fill clusters each containing four VT4889DP-DA elements, specially positioned to cover the end seating areas were also installed. To extend low frequency performance, the system also features four subwoofer arrays, each containing six VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers.

For Super Bowl XLVI, ATK Audiotek deployed its custom-designed cart system, which allows for easy setup between events, and quick transport of the VERTEC loudspeakers on and off the field. The half-time entertainment featured performances by Madonna, LMFAO, Nicky Minaj and M.I.A. Each of the 18 carts included four JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements and two VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers. The cart system was seamlessly integrated by ATK with the JBL VERTEC and VLA line arrays that comprise the house PA system at Lucas Oil Stadium. ESCO Communications installed the venue’s powerful, full-bandwidth system, which was designed by WJHW, for Lucas Oil Stadium’s opening in 2008.

“Both of these projects posed unique challenges,” Brad Ricks, Application Engineer at JBL noted on the deployment of both HARMAN tour-class sound systems used in concert with HARMAN house systems. Both systems feature many of the same BSS, Crown and JBL product families. “The obstacles were dealt with by some of the most exceptional system design and production professionals, working with the most advanced audio components available. Both projects met their key goal, to comprehensively deliver great sound with rock-solid reliability.”

According to Michael MacDonald, HARMAN Professional Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales, the deployment and integration of HARMAN fixed and tour systems for these major entertainment events underscores the firm’s unmatched capacity to provide quality sound all around. This is shown through uniform voicing in its JBL loudspeaker products, clean and flexible digital signal processing from BSS, consistent power amplification with its Crown products, optimal system configuration and control via its HiQnet(tm) networking protocol and software, and a single point of accountability and support for advanced, professional-grade audio systems.

“The Super Bowl halftime show and the GRAMMY Awards have consistently represented the pinnacle of live-event production sophistication and artistic achievement,” MacDonald noted. “This year was no exception. With so many viewers watching and listening onsite and at home, such talented artists performing at both shows and so much production time and resources at stake to ensure flawless execution, it’s fitting that HARMAN systems should provide the best possible sound reinforcement support.”

Ford AV and WJHW Collaborate on Powerful HARMAN Audio System for BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston

Ford AV installed a HARMAN audio system at the new BBVA Compass Stadium, home to the Houston Dynamos of the MLS.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Founded in 2005, the Houston Dynamo is a professional soccer team that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS). After playing its first few seasons at the University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium, the team needed a home of its own and will be moving to the newly completed BBVA Compass Stadium on May 12, 2012. The 30,000-seat stadium will offer the latest in facilities and amenities-including a HARMAN sound system that boasts more than 200 JBL loudspeakers, 50 Crown amplifiers and an extensive BSS Audio distribution and control system.

Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams, Inc. of Dallas, TX handled the audio system design, led by Senior Associate Gary White. Ford AV of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was the audio/video contractor for the project.

The loudspeaker complement for BBVA Compass Stadium main bowl includes a combination of 90 JBL AE Series and PD Series speakers. Models include JBL’s AM7215/95-WRX and AM7215/26-WRX full-range 2-way 15-inch speakers, and PD5212/95-WRX and PD5212/64-WRX 2-way 12-inch high-output speakers. All of the speakers have JBL’s WRX extreme weather protection treatment and are used in the main seating bowl of the stadium. In addition, 113 JBL Control(r) Contractor speakers are installed throughout the facility, including the Control 26CT and 24CT in-ceiling speakers and Control 25T and 28T-60 indoor/outdoor speakers, along with a pair of JRX112M monitors. The speakers are powered by 45 Crown CTs Series CTs-3000-LITE and seven CTs-2000-LITE amplifiers.

The audio system is networked together by an extensive complement of BSS Audio Soundweb London components, including 16 BLU-800 devices with CobraNet(tm), three BLU-160 devices, three BLU-120 I/O expansion devices, a BLU-80 device with CobraNet, seven 9015US Wall Panels, 12 BLUCARD-IN input cards and 29 BLUCARD-OUT output cards.

“BBVA Compass Stadium required a multi-purpose sound system that could handle public address and music throughout the facility,” noted Gary White. “We’ve had great success with HARMAN products in the past and AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), one of the major promoters of Major League Soccer, has a partnership with HARMAN so it was a good fit all around.”

The stadium’s audio system has numerous zones including the main bowl area, the entrances, 34 private suites, the restrooms and other locations. In addition, separate dedicated sound systems are installed in the stadium’s Premium Club, the press room and the post-game interview room. “The BSS Soundweb London components were absolutely essential in getting all of the different audio signals properly routed to all these diverse areas,” White pointed out. “They make what could have been an overly complex system extremely manageable.”

“The JBL AM7215 and PD5212 models are ideal for the main stadium area,” said White. “They deliver high SPL and their rotatable waveguides enable optimum positioning and the ability to orient the speakers either horizontally or vertically. They are also weatherproofed and durable, which is almost as important a consideration as their sound quality and coverage pattern in a city like Houston with its extremes of weather and temperature.”

Jason Werle, Project Manager for Ford AV’s Dallas Division explained some of the challenges behind this installation. “In order to meet a deadline of when the lifts were no longer [allowed] on the field, our first task was to install all of the bowl speakers. At the time, the field was highly populated and made it challenging to navigate around the bowl. We installed all these speakers from the field level using an articulating boom and chain hoists. Any project of this size will have difficult cable pulls and Dynamo was no exception.”

“We went with the JBL Control in-ceiling and outdoor speakers in the other areas of BBVA Compass Stadium because they are compact and can be installed inconspicuously, yet deliver powerful sound,” noted White.

Herrick Goldman Scores with GDS LiteWare Fixtures and grandMA Lighting Control

Lighting designer Herrick Goldman recently scored big at Dallas Cowboys Stadium helping transform the football field into the site of a spectacular event for Ward & Ames Special Events, the company that created a first ever design concept straddling the 50 yard line for the launch of Emirates Airline’s Dubai to Dallas route. With support from GDS LiteWare fixtures and grandMA lighting control, he gave a “larger than life” look to the celebratory dinner and presentation for 950 guests with entertainment by musical group Splash and a performance by cast members of “Dancing With The Stars.” A.C.T Lighting is the distributor of grandMA and GDS lighting in North America.

Goldman deployed 24 GDS LiteWare Satellite up-lighters to illuminate the stadium’s exterior arched entry and positioned additional fixtures along the red carpet, which led guests to the VIP lounge for cocktails. Bright Star Productions of Houston implemented all the entryway designs.

GDS’s LiteWare range of RGB LED solutions for lighting include the new Satellite, which offers a fully-adjustable head with 360º pan and 180º tilt for easy focusing. The up-lighters provide an ideal solution for today’s demanding events. With no cabling required for power or control, the fixtures are deployed in the desired locations by simply switching them on.

“A.C.T Lighting’s Ben Saltzman showed me the fixtures about a year ago, and I saw them again at PLASA,” Goldman explains. “They work great. You just set them and forget them. They’re bright, require no cabling and have handy wireless DMX. They’re perfect for quick one-of installations like the Emirates gala.”

After cocktails in the Legends Club, Emirates guests were led to stadium seating for the first presentation. The venue’s 70×160-foot LED screen (currently the world’s fourth largest) was lowered to 40’ feet above the 50 yard line on the field and curtained off with black velour traveler track. Ward & Ames asked Goldman to create a simulated landing strip runway which he did by lining it with 130 feet of Color Kinetics ColorBlaze lighting and High End Dataflash strobes, using vertical trusses as searchlight towers to amp up excitement in the crowd. When the traveler opened it revealed an elegant dinner setting and a 120-foot wide stage on the opposite side of the field.

Goldman controlled several hundred lights with a grandMA console; a second desk was on hand for backup. “When it’s my choice, I only specify grandMA,” he declares. “Paul Sonnleitner did some fast and beautiful programming on it.”

In addition to the runway lighting, the grandMA controlled cyc lighting with 75 fixtures working together to produce more than 25 different looks for the set. The stage boasted a 115-foot high center cyc flanked by 68-foot high cycs.

The console also controlled stage lighting, dance floor lighting and back lighting. Goldman turned to the grandMA for control of audience lighting, too, which featured 60 fixtures.
