FSR To Launch Enhanced “GREEN” D/A’s InfoComm 2012

UNITS TREAT THE PLANET KINDER WHILE MAINTAINING SIGNAL INTEGRITY OVER LONG CABLE RUNS

POWER SAVER FEATURE DRAMATICALLY REDUCES CONSUMPTION

Woodland Park, NJ • At InfoComm 2012 FSR, manufacturer of audio and video switching, control products, and connectivity boxes, will introduce enhanced versions of their high-resolution 1 X 2 computer distribution amplifiers that maintain excellent signal integrity while dramatically reducing power consumption. The new CDA-2EQG and CDA-2EQGA, with stereo audio, satisfy applications where a local monitor is needed along with a remote display device requiring a long cable run, such as Conference / Board Rooms, Classrooms, Courtrooms, Staging and Rental, and Houses of Worship.

The enhanced models incorporate all of the benefits of their predecessors, including ultra high bandwidth, flat frequency response, local monitor output and second monitor output with integrated line driver and cable EQ. Additionally they feature a “green” automatic power down feature that reduces standby power consumption to less than 50mW, a reduction of over 95%, and an advanced sync output circuit that helps provide reliable display operation even with improperly terminated cables.

The CDA-2EQG local monitor output is fully buffered by an independent amplifier stage to eliminate interaction with the remote output that is buffered and equalized to maintain excellent signal integrity with even the highest video resolutions. Signals arrive at the far end of the cable, up to 175’ of standard mini hi-res coax, with almost an immeasurable amount of loss.

The CDA-2EQGA incorporates a mini stereo input jack on the front and 5 position pluggable captive screw terminal on the back for balanced stereo audio output. An active audio balancing circuit ensures long, noise free stereo audio cable runs from the point of installation to the sound system.

All of FSR’s latest products will be on exhibit at InfoComm, June 13 – 15, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, booth N651.

Philippines Audio Contractor Soundcheck on HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC(r) V5 DSP Preset Tunings: “My Clients Are Noticing The Difference”

MUNTINLUPA, The Philippines – Soundcheck is one of the Philippines’ top audio contractors and has handled the live sound for artists including Rihanna, Chris Brown, Incubus, Beyoncé, Linkin Park, Christina Aguilera and many others. The company has used HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC(r) line arrays since their introduction, in situations from indoor corporate events to outdoor shows for major international touring acts. Soundcheck just upgraded to JBL’s new V5 VERTEC preset tunings and its clients are hearing the improvement.

“We installed the V5 DSP presets in all of the VERTEC VT4888 and VT4888DP line arrays in our inventory, in the speakers’ DrivePack DPDA input modules,” said Jaime Godinez, owner and chief engineer of Soundcheck. “After installing the V5 upgrade and testing the speakers by running pre-recorded music for them for hours, we sent them out for a major local show right away. We went through the show without a hitch-and have since done more than 60 shows with them including a few large open-air concerts.”

“When JBL introduced the V4 presets a few years ago I felt that they had given new life to the VERTEC system. But the improvement offered by the V5 is even more significant,” Godinez continued. “The improvement in clarity, balance and coverage have made me fall in love with our audio systems all over again. But most importantly, my clients are noticing the difference between our sound and that of the competition.”

“No comments I can give can adequately convey the experience of actually hearing the sonic improvements that V5 provides, especially in an open-air environment,” Godinez noted. “I’ll try by giving one example. Last March I was mixing the Coca-Cola Concert ng Bayan at the SM Mall of Asia, which celebrated 100 years of Coca-Cola in the Philippines. The concert featured around 20 performers and I brought 32 VERTEC VT4888′s for the main front of house.”

“The sound was so transparent and ‘in your face’ that many times during the night I had to double-check to see whether my near-field monitors were off or on, as the sound from the VERTEC arrays seemed to be coming from that close.”

Godinez pointed out that he has to add more gain to the VT4888′s using V5 to keep some mixing consoles from being driven too hot. “It’s just something you have to pay attention to,” he said. “With V5 you might have to make an adjustment to the gain of the DriveRack modules compared to the settings you’d use with the V4, to make sure the gain between the board, speakers and the rest of the system is optimized.”

“Another big benefit we found is that using the V5 presets enables us to set the systems up faster,” Godinez concluded.

In addition to their compatibility with JBL VERTEC DrivePack(r) DPDA input modules, V5 preset tunings are available for Crown VRACK amplifier packages, JBL HiQnet Performance Manager(tm) and HARMAN HiQnet System Architect(tm) V3.0 software and the Powered by Crown system control app.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG(r), Harman Kardon(r), Infinity(r), JBL(r), Lexicon(r) and Mark Levinson(r). ABS Redesigns Control Room for Portland Timbers

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced that it recently restructured the in-house video production control room at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore., for the Portland Timbers Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The two-day project was completed in time for the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Union on March 12.

The home field for the Timbers soccer and Portland State University Vikings football, JELD-WEN Field is an outdoor stadium that opened in 1926 and seats about 20,400. Over the years, the facility has had several major renovations. Part of the 2010-2011 renovation included the installation of a 37×20-foot HD video board at the south end of the stadium and an upgrade of the control room, which is housed in a small, two-level portion of the press box.

Jennifer Smoral, director, events and promotions, Portland Timbers, said the control room was renovated before the 2011 MLS season. “We ran a really good show and everything worked,” she explained, “but we came to realize quickly there could be a more efficient setup. We are pleased now that we are able to produce an even better in-game experience for our fans.”

To improve their game day workflow (and add fiber connectivity for stadium cameras, which had not been done in 2011), the Timbers hired ABS. Rather than start from scratch or install all new systems, ABS kept costs down by re-engineering the existing workspace.

The control room redesign included a variety of updates, including moving the audio operator (and a compact mixer) into the lower part of the control room. Positioned between the PA announcer and scoreboard operator, the audio operator now serves a producer role during games as well. Meanwhile, the video content workstations – including technical director, graphics generator/LED operator, and replay operator – were re-clustered together on the second level.

ABS also provided new fiber connectivity to the control room, which upgraded the camera locations around the stadium to HD. During a match, the production team has access to up to eight cameras to cover promotions and game action.

Smoral said ABS worked efficiently and was able to “translate” highly technical terminology so it was easy to understand. “They listened to our comments without trying to sell us something we didn’t need,” she added.

As a result of ABS’ work, Smoral said the team is able to provide an enhanced on-screen product for its fans. Plus, the new configuration has improved the production workflow and reduced manpower requirements. “Communication is much easier,” Smoral said. “We work smarter, not harder.”

About ABS:

Based in SeaTac, WA, ABS (Advanced Broadcast Solutions) delivers customized, technologically superior solutions for broadcast, corporate, house of worship, entertainment, government, and educational facilities – from design and integration to installation and support services. Martin Audio Introduces MLA Compact™ For Installed Sound

Las Vegas, NV––Introduced at InfoComm 2012, the new MLA Compact™ makes Martin Audio’s award winning* Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) technology available to a wide range of installed sound applications.

Incorporating the same principles that allowed MLA to break new ground on the international touring circuit, the self-powered and processed MLA Compact takes advanced cellular control to permanent installations such as Theaters, Concert Halls, Ballrooms and Houses of Worship where a smaller, lighter system takes precedence over the full power and throw of the flagship MLA.

The new system’s compact size (each enclosure measures only 31” wide x 11” high x 19.6” deep and weighs 109 lbs.) belies its output capabilities—a 12-box array can easily deliver full rock SPLs in a 5,000 seat venue, while a 24-box array will approach the output of many “full-size” systems which have less efficient acoustic elements.

MLA Compact’s fully integrated system brings together the latest technologies in acoustic design, Class D amplification, DSP and industry-leading optimization software—with communications and control via an easy-to-use audio network. Combining with fast, automated Display 2.1™ intelligent software it delivers a dramatically increased level of performance and coverage consistency over traditional line arrays.

Since no external amplifier racks are required, the integration of power and control also represents huge trucking advantages as well as valuable space and cost saving.

Asked about the new system, Martin Audio North American Director of Sales Rob Hofkamp stated, “MLA Compact is ideally suited for fixed installations. Its light weight, scalability and competitive pricing, coupled with the power and seamless coverage of MLA technology, make it a winner right out of the box.”

About MLA Compact
System Architecture: Loudspeakers
The 3-way MLA Compact delivers power, clarity and detail, with a peak output capability of 135dB LF, 135dB midrange and 135dB HF, per box at 1 meter. MLA Compact’s LF section utilizes 2 × 10”/2.5″ voice coil, neodymium drive units in a unique Hybrid® configuration. Each driver is slot-loaded into a truncated horn with a low flare rate, to give a high sensitivity of 103dB @ 1m/2.83V.

MLA Compact has separate, mid and HF horns with horizontal constant directivity characteristics—so the horizontal off-axis response tracks the on-axis response exactly. The mid horn utilizes 2 × 5″/1.5″ voice coil neodymium drivers to produce 109dB @ 1m/2.83V, while the 5″ cone/0.7″ compression driver combination replaces the more traditionally used large format compression driver and has less distortion, as well as having a much more extended HF response.

The HF section utilizes 4 × 0.7″ exit neodymium compression drivers which feed separate horns for true 100° horizontal constant directivity. In the vertical plane, MLA Compact makes significant advances over previous thinking by adopting new criteria for vertical wavefront curvature.

DSX Subwoofer/DSX-F Sub
With high output level, compact size and advanced DSP-based realization of directional arrays, the DSX more than meets the challenge of a powerful subwoofer.

Capable of 146dB peak output at 1m (half space, measured), the DSX powered and networked subwoofer is an incredible performer. Its high output level is achieved by combining state-of-the-art LF driver technology with an onboard Class D amplifier module that can deliver 6kW peak power.

The DSX features 2 × 18″/4″ voice coil, ferrite drivers in a reflex-loaded enclosure with four flared ports, carefully designed to improve linear airflow. Each driver is housed in its own separate chamber to move any cabinet resonances out of band. Sonically, the DSX is a perfect balance of low frequency extension and punch.

A flying version, the DSX-F Sub, can be flown alongside or at the top of MLA Compact arrays, as well as being ground stacked. A maximum of 15 DSX-F can be suspended from the MLA flying frame and symmetrical rigging allows flown DSX-F cabinets to face backwards — enabling directional flown as well as directional ground stacked arrays to be configured.

The ground-stack DSX can be upgraded to the DSX–F by the addition of an easy-to-fit accessory kit.

System Architecture: Control
Each MLA Compact enclosure is fitted with a state-of-the-art five-channel amplifier module — with high-efficiency Class D circuitry delivering a total of 2.1kW continuous and 4.2kW peak output. One channel powers both LF drivers in parallel and two channels drive each mid independently. For the HF section, two channels drive the four HF drivers in parallel pairs, making a total of five independently powered acoustic cells per enclosure. Lightweight, switched-mode power supplies, auto-range to global mains voltages from 100 to 240V 50/60Hz, whilst Power Factor Correction smoothes out the mains current draw over the whole of the AC waveform. The amplifier section is designed to withstand rain and ambient temperatures of up to 45°C and features advanced protection ─ amplifier monitoring via U-NET includes input signal, output signal at the drive unit terminals, limiter status, heatsink temperatures and driver fault conditions.

Powerful onboard DSP performs all crossover and EQ functions via a combination of IIR and advanced FIR filtering — fast VanishingPoint™ FIR filters give the freedom to physically separate the mid and HF horns — so they do not compromise each other’s constant directivity dispersion pattern, yet achieve the spatial performance of a single device.

Arrays can be remotely controlled over U-NET from the supplied wireless tablet running VU-NET™ control software with its intuitive graphical interface. VU-NET also enables the user to switch on enclosure identification LEDs with automatic identification of neighboring enclosures and connectivity confirmation.

MLA Compact’s rigging system combines speed with precision. Up to 24 enclosures can be suspended via its two-point-lift flybar, and the same hardware can also be used for single point lifting of up to 12 cabinets, as well as ground stacking up to 6 high.
