ENTASYS Helps St Marks Bridge Traditional and Contemporary

Wilmington, DE, May 2012….. Beginning with a small handful of neighbors in 1942, St Mark’s Lutheran Church has grown over the years to become one of the area’s most beloved houses of worship. Its congregation of more than 500 members includes a diverse mix of young and old, and the church offers two different services every Sunday – one  traditional and one more contemporary – to accommodate this diversity.

The church’s original sanctuary was largely destroyed by fire several years ago, prompting a long-term renovation process that recently included the design and installation of a new, modern sound system. As Tony Albano of Avondale, PA-based Naamans Creek Audio/Video explains, the new system was designed to accommodate the disparate requirements of two different types of services.

“It’s not a particularly large room, but it’s got a very high peaked ceiling, so there’s a fair amount of reflectivity, which has created some intelligibility issues,” says Albano. “Since they also offer a contemporary service with live musicians, we had a bit of a challenge with loudspeaker placement. If we located the loudspeakers behind the altar, they would then be behind the musicians as well – a major feedback risk.”

To address this challenge, Albano’s design-build opted for a pair of ENTASYS high-performance full-range column line arrays from Community Professional Loudspeakers, powered by Crown CTS4200 amplification. The consistent, focused coverage ENTASYS provides enabled Albano to position the loudspeakers far closer to the congregation than would be possible for most other systems.

“We ended up mounting the ENTASYS columns pretty much right at the front of the pews,” he says. “In fact, when you see where they’re mounted, your first impression is that there’s no way it can work, that it’s going to blow away the person sitting right in front of it. The pastor came in and looked at it and said ‘no way, everyone’s going to be sitting in the back.’ But the fact is, the ENTASYS system is so precise in its ability to control the waveform that we were able to create a pattern that projected great coverage to the back of the room while delivering manageable volume to the front pews.”

Albano says the new ENTASYS columns have worked out quite well for St. Marks. “They are extremely happy with the system,” he says. “It’s helped immensely with spoken word intelligibility for the sermons, and has done wonders for the music as well.”

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Donny and Marie Osmond continue to bring their popular stage show to audiences of all ages while on tour with a HARMAN Studer Vista 5 serving as the front-of-house mixing console.

Donny and Marie’s performances include a 90-minute variety show, highlighted by many of their original hits with a mix of special effects and dancing. New York-based Sound Associates provided the Vista 5 console as it is “the most sophisticated board and perfect for theatrical performances,” according to Lucas Rico Corrubia, FOH Engineer, PlanetRoadie Sound Design. “After trying an assortment of digital consoles, we went with the Vista 5 because it still has the analog feel that I love so much.”

The transition from analog to digital was daunting for Lucas, but after trying the Vista, everything felt right. “It’s amazing, for someone who has been mixing for over 30 years, I was able to make the easy switch and noticed right away the value of the digital console,” Lucas said. “The layout is user-friendly and provides me with anything I could ever want in a board.”

“I love the programming and the snapshots,” Lucas said. “Being able to save cues and settings makes my job even easier. With 12 people on stage with a variety of roles, it helps greatly to have a whole section of the board dedicated to making changes on the fly. I don’t need to scroll through pages or settings to change a fader or EQ, it’s all there when I need it.” Lucas explained how this allows him to make very few changes during sound check and he can be confident that everything is set up correctly.

Lucas says there has never been an issue with the console; in fact, the board is able to detect potential problems. “If for some reason something isn’t hooked up correctly, the Vista 5 lets you know and it’s easy to trace the problem,” he added. “Everything about the console is easy to work with and just makes my job easier.”

“When artists recognize the sound quality, you know you are doing something right,” Lucas continued. “They think it’s me, but it’s really the console! Studer is definitely moving in the right direction and I appreciate everything they have done to allow me to get everything I need out of the console.”

Powerband Films Pushes Extreme Sports Cinematography to the Limit with FUJINON PL Lenses

Wayne, N.J. – On a given shoot they may be capturing the grueling tension of a 24-hour car race or the adrenaline excitement of a 400-foot motorcycle jump. But veteran extreme action sports cinematographers Mike “Mack Dawg” McEntire of Mack Dawg Productions and Jay Schweitzer of Powerband Films know one constant: the rock solid performance of lenses from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation.

McEntire and Schweitzer recently put FUJINON’s Premier PL mount zoom lenses, the 75–400mm/T2.8 – T3.8 (HK5.3×75) and the FUJINON 24-180 mm/T2.6 (HK7.5×24) to an extreme test, shooting “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits” jump event for their independent feature documentary on daredevil distance jumps. Both lenses were mounted to Red Epic cameras in this extremely challenging environment. The shoot occurred at night with dense fog. For the event, a snowmobile and a dirt bike jumped in tandem over a section of the San Diego Bay. The snowmobile jumped over 400 feet, and the dirt bike soared just shy of 400 feet. In order to capture the jumps in their entirety, the two cinematographers needed lenses that were sharp, wide open with a long range on the zoom. They found the ideal fit with the Fujinon Premiere PL glass.

McEntire is the owner of Mack Dawg Productions, a company known globally as one of the top action sports film companies. Mack Dawg has been producing extreme sports films since 1988. McEntire and fellow extreme sports cinematographer Jay Schweitzer started Powerband Films to collaborate on the “On the Pipe” series of freestyle motorcycle films 10 years ago. The “On the Pipe” films have been the definitive films on dirt biking since their collaboration began.

McEntire relied on the versatile 75-400mm again on a RED Epic camera to shoot the Rolex 24 GRAND-AM car race in Daytona Beach for Continental Tires. McEntire explained, “Both events required varied focal lengths. I found the 75 to 400mm range to be incredibly useful. It’s the longest range PL mount zoom lens available and with unbelievable 4K performance. Even shooting at a wide open T2.8 aperture for the Red Bull event, staged at night with serious fog to contend with, images were razor sharp edge to edge. It provided great-looking, slow motion footage that we like to use a lot.”

For the Rolex race, Continental wanted artsy footage for a one-hour television feature. “I was able to shoot all night in marginal light and produce amazing results,” McEntire described. “In the daytime, I captured high-speed action employing ND filtration to shoot wide open without any flare problems. My goal was to capture beautiful shallow depth of field material that you don’t normally see in a car race. I would’ve had a very hard time trying to do this with any other lens. Having a long zoom that performs like the FUJINON 75-400 in all types of light was a dream come true. This lens made a real difference in my images – at both events.”

Many of the events that McEntire and Schweitzer shoot are daredevil jumps, stunts and professional sports where the athlete has just one attempt to get it right. They have to nail a perfect shot every time. McEntire said, “The FUJINON 75-400 mm is absolutely the best lens I’ve ever come across for this type of work. The build quality is fantastic, with buttery smooth gearing that makes pulling focus a treat. It delivers a punchy, crisp image with black blacks and colors that pop. After such a great experience on these very demanding shoots, I’m looking forward to trying out the other two zoom lenses in the Premier series with upcoming productions.”

Thunder Audio Bolsters World-Class Inventory With HARMAN’S JBL Professional VTX Line Array Series

NORTHRIDGE, California – Michigan’s Thunder Audio is celebrating its 33rd year in business in 2012, having grown from its beginnings as a regional sound company in 1979 to its current status as a premier international live production and systems integration company. Shortly after the VTX Series was announced, Owen heard a demo in San Diego and was impressed, particularly by the quality of the new JBL D2 Dual Driver included in the V25. The D2 is a dual-diaphragm, dual-voice-coil compression driver that overcomes the limitations of conventional compression driver technology: limited high-frequency extension due to the mass/inertia of the diaphragm and voice coil, and distortion characteristics that result from dome breakup modes. The D2 overcomes these drawbacks by merging two compression drivers into a single transducer that utilizes two annular diaphragms with two voice coils instead of the larger and heavier single voice-coil dome diaphragm found in conventional drivers.

Owen was “blown away” by the quality of the D2 driver and the increased clarity and power-handling capability it provides in the V25. “I’ve been in this business a long time and have done live sound in every type of venue imaginable,” Owen said. “There’s no disputing the improved sound quality and the sheer amount of horsepower the V25 has. You can believe we will test it to its max with some of the acts we’ll be using it with.”

The lighter weight of the JBL V25 and S28 make them a more versatile option for the variety of projects Thunder Audio handles. In addition, the weight difference from other systems makes these speakers easier to rig and transport and saves fuel and transportation costs.

The S28 subwoofer is designed to complement the V25 with its dual 18-inch Differential Drive(r) high-power-handling woofers and built-in Crown VRack amplifiers and DSP. “We like the S28 because it can be either suspended at the top, in the middle of, beside or behind flown V25 arrays or ground-stacked,” Owen noted. “Again, this gives us more options to accommodate different-sized venues and the requirements of a wide variety of artists and musical styles.”

When deciding which amplifiers to go with the VTX line arrays, Owen didn’t spend a lot of time hand wringing. “We made this decision not only because of the performance of the products but also because of the ways in which the loudspeakers, amplifiers and other components are designed to work together optimally,” he said. “We purchased the Crown IT 12000HD amplifiers because we wanted to get maximum power and efficiency from our system.”

The Crown IT 12000HD amps are designed to work hand-in-glove with JBL VTX Series line arrays and include pre-set tunings and other features to precisely match their performance to the loudspeakers. The VTX speakers and I-Tech HD amps interface with HARMAN’s HiQnet Performance Manager(tm) system setup software, which Owen finds to be the best system management program on the market. HiQnet enables Thunder Audio to configure, set up and tune an audio system “in less time and with better results,” stated Owen.

New Smart Light Sports Training Systems Project Images Onto Practice Surfaces Using Hitachi CP-X10000 3LCD Projectors

CHULA VISTA, California, May 29, 2012 — Youth athletes and their coaches are looking at training in a new light—literally, thanks to Joe Dellanno, president of Smart Light Sports of Arlington, MA and inventor of Ice Light, Court Light, Lane Light and Turf Light systems for hockey, basketball, volleyball, marching bands, bowling and turf sports. The new patent-pending systems use Hitachi CP-X10000 3LCD projectors to display animated graphics and images onto the playing surface where the athletes can practice in an entirely new and engaging way.

“Coaches are always looking to increase players’ skills and get the most out of their practice time,” noted Dellanno. “However, there’s always been a disconnect between the coaches and the display technology they use to get their points across to the players. How do you convey the feel of moving around on a 17,000-square-foot playing surface using an 8-foot projection screen?”

“With Ice Light, we wanted to show players what they could never see before, such as making shooting angles visible, watching plays develop on the ice, following animations that show how the puck travels, and displaying movement cues and explanations that show players where to skate,” Dellanno added.

“In my architectural business I use projectors for presentations all the time,” Dellanno continued. “Once my children started playing sports and I started coaching, it gave me the idea: why couldn’t I turn the projector 90 degrees and do the same thing on a playing surface?”

However, to make the system work for hockey, Dellanno needed a projector that was bright enough to project images onto a variety of playing surfaces.

John Bonyman of North Billerica, MA-based systems integrator Total Audio Video worked hand in hand with Dellanno in developing the system and recommended the Hitachi CP-X10000. Total Audio Video is the exclusive integrator for Ice Light.

“I knew the Hitachi projector would be a good fit for this unique application because of its brightness and its ability to achieve a big enough image size,” said Bonyman. Currently, Smart Light systems are in place in rinks in Woburn, MA and Exeter, NH, and a system is being installed at Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, NY in its new rink and turf facility.

“Giving the players the ability to look at visual cues right on the surface is amazingly effective,” Bonyman continued. “Usually, hockey practices are 50 minutes and during that time you get about 30 minutes of skating time, and the rest of the time the players are doing something else – but you’re still paying for the down time over the course of maybe 60 practices in a season.”

“With Ice Light, the players are spending a lot more time skating. But more importantly, they’re more focused and engaged,” Dellanno pointed out. “It’s pretty amazing–you can run through a drill and after just one time the players get it and are doing it themselves. Also, we can project multiple images, which allow all the players to participate in drills, not just some of them.”

“Ice Light enables better, faster and more effective skill development, and Hitachi is an essential part of the system,” Dellanno concluded.

The CP-X10000 projector offers XGA resolution, with a brightness of 7,500 ANSI lumens and a 2500:1 contrast ratio. It features inorganic LCD panels for longer projector life and dust-resistant cooling systems, allowing the filter to operate for 10,000 maintenance-free hours. The CP-X10000 also features a 3,000-hour lamp life and blackboard/whiteboard mode and daytime mode. Security features include a PIN lock, Kensington slot and transition detector.

Masque Sound Hits the Right Note with AV Installation at Lincoln Center’s Newest Theater

Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater Dedicated to Producing Works of a New Generation

NEW YORK, MAY 29, 2012—When Yorke Construction was given the task of building Lincoln Center’s newest theater, the Claire Tow Theater, it turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company specializing in theatrical, house of worship, sporting, corporate, TV broadcast and live concert events, to install and provide training for the abundance of AV equipment specified for the project. The new 23,000-square-foot, two-story state-of-the-art facility is home to a 112-seat theater and dressing rooms, as well as rehearsal and office space for Lincoln Center Theater (LCT) staff and an outdoor terrace surrounded by a green roof. This new addition to the facility furthers LCT’s programming initiatives, which are dedicated to producing the work of new artists and the development of new audiences.

“Having successfully worked with the project’s general contractor, Yorke Construction, on the 52nd street project and with Lincoln Center on a regular basis, this was a natural fit for us,” says Matthew Peskie, systems engineer, Masque Sound.

This new project will bring to fruition LCT’s long-held desire for a third theater to present the work of the next generation of its playwrights, directors and designers. As plans evolved for the campus-wide Lincoln Center Development Project, which is making Lincoln Center more open and accessible, this new addition became a reality as well. The Claire Tow Theater will play a vital role in this expansion, with the theater’s productions adding a new dimension of creative activity, as well as bringing a new audience, to Lincoln Center.

Masque Sound worked closely with Yorke Construction as well as design firm JaffeHolden and Tri-State AV union electricians, for the project. “Masque Sound is grounded in the theater world—they get it,” says Ben Bausher, senior consultant, audio and video systems group, JaffeHolden. “We have all worked together in some capacity, so for this project in particular it was like getting the band back together—the right team for the right project.”

From panel finishes to integrating equipment into the theater’s structure, Masque Sound was very much a part of the planning process. Among the equipment provided, the team selected Meyer Sound loudspeakers and system control processors. Open-architecture DSP processors from Symetrix are used to control the facility paging system. “Meyer Sound is an industry standard when it comes to Broadway and theater, as their transparent speakers offer a very blank canvas,” adds Peskie. “All Meyer speakers in the facility are portable, so when configurations change for new shows, they have that flexibility. In addition, the amount of AV panels and the connectivity that they offer allow for flexibility no matter the size or scale of the production.”

Other gear the team provided includes a Soundcraft Vi1 Console, Clear-Com communications system, QSC amplifiers, Mackie 1202-VLZ3 professional compact mixer, cabling infrastructure and stage boxes, along with additional custom-AV solutions.

Each year the Claire Tow Theater will produce a season of new plays and musicals in its new home. It will serve not only as a nurturing arena for artists to hone their skills but will also provide a stepping stone for these artists who, it is hoped, will continue their professional lives at Lincoln Center’s larger theatrical venues. All tickets to Claire Tow Theater productions are priced at an affordable $20.00.
