Shanghai Oriental TV Studio Updates Audio With HARMAN Soundcraft® Vi1 Digital Console

SHANGHAI, China — Shanghai Oriental TV-owned Shanghai Media Group, Inc. (SMG), recently updated its studio in Pudong with a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital audio console. Pudong is a 400 square meter studio, mainly used for production of small scale variety shows.

SMG is one of Soundcraft’s longest-served customers: before upgrading to the Vi1, the studio housed a Soundcraft B400 analog mixer. Tasked with budgeting for a new console, the project team compared the Vi1 with several competitive models. In comparison, SMG highlighted four key factors regarding the Vi1:

• The Vi1’s world-class DSP processing technology—a result of Soundcraft and Studer’s many years of console expertise.

• 40-bit floating point processing technology.

• The Vi1’s Vistonics™ interface is easy to use. Different engineers use the studio all the time, so ease of use is very important. Users can see most of the parameters on Vistonics screens so there is no need to scroll through menus.

• As well as the different functions, the Vi1 associates controls with different colors on the Vistonics touch screens and FaderGlow™. This makes operation of the Vi1 very intuitive.

With such strengths, it was obvious that the Soundcraft Vi1 came up as the winner in the final selection, and the studio is already happily using its new console.

Technomad Expands Integrator and End User Options for PowerChiton Amplifiers

Localized control and connections, streaming audio support offer progressive solutions to enhance outdoor audio installations

BOSTON, May 15, 2012Technomad introduces several new product accessories at InfoComm 2012 to complement its advanced audio solutions range. The innovative tools give systems integrators and end users flexible new options to simplify Technomad installations in stadiums, on college campuses and across other indoor/outdoor facilities.

At InfoComm (June 13-15, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth C12033), Technomad introduces a weatherproof breakout box and Apple AirPort Express audio streaming compatibility for its range of PowerChiton amplifier modules. The company will also show a new stainless steel mounting solution for its high-power weatherproof loudspeaker models.

“Technomad is always seeking ways to increase the range of applications for our products, and make life easier for systems integrators by innovating solutions that address installation challenges in the field,” said Rodger von Kries, vice president, Technomad.

PowerChiton Breakout Box
The PowerChiton range of passively-cooled, IP66-rated weatherproof amplifier modules — available in four power levels up to 1600 watts — have grown increasingly popular in outdoor audio projects where installers wish to co-locate amplification with loudspeakers, from athletic field complexes to university campus mass notification systems. The compact and low profile of PowerChiton amplifier modules — along with the rugged, weatherproof design — enables sound contractors to easily install the modules on light poles and other surfaces at any height.

Technomad now introduces a specialized PowerChiton breakout box that enables local audio control at user-friendly locations in the same NEMA-style protective enclosure. Contractors can install the breakout box at eye level, for example, allowing end users to adjust volume and connect a handheld microphone or an iPod on the fly.

The PowerChiton breakout box, which begins shipping July 1, includes mic and line level inputs, a four-channel mixer, an accessory cord and mounting hardware. The breakout box also enables remote installations, such as athletic fields without a press box or other protected location, to benefit from permanently-installed, PowerChiton-based PA systems. A coach or announcer can walk up to the breakout box, open it and be speaking through the PA or playing music within seconds.

“Installers typically only open PowerChiton amplifiers to hard-wire connections and set levels, and then screw the box shut for dependable, permanent installations,” said von Kries. “The PowerChiton breakout box is designed for ongoing user adjustments, with easy and direct access to controls and the capacity to store an audio player and microphone. It also provides a local audio source to make announcements and connect an iPod or other playout device.”

Technomad also now supports AirPlay capability from PowerChiton for Apple AirPort Express users. This allows commercial and residential customers to wirelessly stream iTunes audio files and playlists to an AirPort Express unit within a PowerChiton amplifier or breakout box. Users require only the hardware and a basic network or Wi-Fi connection to wirelessly stream audio from a computer or playout device to the PowerChiton — reducing costs and infrastructure associated with traditional wiring and cabling.

New Wall Mount Solution
Technomad is now shipping a new stainless steel wall mount for its AS Series of weatherproof, advanced audio loudspeakers. The AS Series consists of the largest and most powerful Technomad loudspeakers, including the Noho and all Berlin models (broad and narrow-dispersion).

Unlike older styles, the new Technomad wall mount accessory allows installers to position any AS Series loudspeaker vertically or horizontally. The stainless steel design prevents weather-related erosion over time, and pole-mount adaption simplifies lighting and telephone pole installations.

Technomad will also show a range of existing advanced audio solutions, including its ultra-lightweight DragonFly remote audio system; and its Schedulon audio playback and recording system.

ABOUT TECHNOMAD
Technomad LLC, founded in 1995, designs and manufactures loudspeaker systems for the professional audio and security/military technology industries. The company invented the first reliable full-range weatherproof loudspeaker and now offers nine models ranging in power from 60-watt loudspeakers to 1250-watt subwoofers — most available in Turnkey PA System packages featuring amplifiers, mixers and other signal processing equipment in pre-wired racks. The company also manufactures a variety of audio infrastructure and communications equipment including playback and recording systems, weatherproof power amplifiers and turnkey remote audio systems. Clay Paky Sharpy Fixtures Shine on Pitbull’s PlanetPit World Tour

Rapper and pop singer-songwriter Pitbull, a Billboard Latin Music Award winner, has been playing to packed houses on his PlanetPit World Tour 2012 where Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are in tune with the artist’s unique vibe.

The tour recently concluded a cross-Canada run, will be heading for Europe shortly and plans to return to the U.S. in the fall. Lighting designer Justin Geiger of California-based Impulse Creative Group designed a tiered rig with video in the center for the Canadian dates. Impulse Creative Group consists of a design team with experience in live concerts, corporate events and houses of worship, which offers production design, system development and total show management.

“There’s a high-energy club vibe to the show; it’s very upbeat,” says Geiger. “The venues mostly hold 8-14,000 people, and Pit is selling out all over the place.”

Geiger “built everything around multiple heights and depths,” placing six Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures on band risers, four Sharpys in each of the two wings and eight more across the top.

“They’re being used as the high impact fixture of the show,” says the lighting designer. “They’re crazy bright, unbelievably fast, and definitely the main focus of the rig. In fact, I use them for every cue. Everyone is surprised how much those little fixtures make such a difference in our show.”

Geiger notes that Sharpy fixtures appear to be “popping up everywhere” these days. “For good reason,” he notes. “I had never used them before but told my production manager that I had to have them for the tour. And I just love them.” Lighting fixtures for the Canada tour were supplied by Briere.

Geiger plans to redesign the rig for the next leg of the tour. “I hope to use all Clay Paky fixtures,” he says. “I’d like to add Alpha Beam 700s to my inventory of Sharpys.”

A.C.T Lighting is the distributor for Clay Paky in North America.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re glad that our fixtures are doing so well for this tour. Mr. Geiger is a great designer truly understands the impact that the Sharpy can have.”

About Clay Paky
Headquartered in Seriate (Bergamo), Italy, Clay Paky SPA has a history of designing and manufacturing innovative professional show lighting. Harley Davidson Showroom Transforms and Puts New Life Into Church with NEXO System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—When LifePointe Christian Church in Elk Grove, California was looking for a sound system to compliment their new location, a converted Harley Davidson showroom, they turned to the expertise of CCI of Olympia, Washington. Project manager, David McLain, recommended a NEXO PS15 system for the 400-seat church that consists of three PS15s, one CD18 and a 4×4 NXAMP.

“Pastor Chris Delfs sought out a new location where they would not only own their space but could create a unique, new culture,” states McLain. “They weren’t looking for a NEXO system per se, but were looking for good advice.” At only 60’ deep, with less than 20’ of trim, a line array would not have been the best tool, whereas, the asymmetrical horn pattern of a PS15 reaches the back rows with ease.”

“David actually discouraged a line array approach in this case, and if you look at how much the HVAC and lighting impacts the trim height, the PS solution was much better,” notes Steve Armstrong, PROS Inc., independent rep firm for NEXO.

“I’d been hearing a lot of talk about NEXO speakers over the past few years,” and have listened to various models and I was impressed enough to recommend them for a couple of rooms, particularly given the outstanding support I’ve been receiving from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems,” says McLain. I didn’t really know the extent of the NEXO lineup until I had opportunity to listen critically and extensively to their whole selection of speakers at a demo at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center in California. The Cerritos Center is an awesome building. We used their beautiful main room to try out the NEXO speakers. I spent the first demo day designing speaker systems for rooms using various software, and I liked the way the NEXO speakers worked in the planning, and also liked what I saw in the computer models. The NS-1 software was easy to work with, so I imported some real-world rooms, like LifePointe, that I’d been working on. It appeared the NEXO PS Series would provide excellent coverage.”

“I have to admit, there’s a fair bit of skeptic in me,” McLain says. “A box that promises a rectangular coverage pattern had better do more than just advertise well! It needs to offer an actual rectangular coverage pattern. And more importantly, it needs to sound good! In the next day’s listening tests, I measured 112 dB at the back of the listening room, and I have to say, it sure didn’t feel like 112 dB. In fact, it didn’t sound like a PA playing. It sounded like a woman was right there singing to me. Yamaha brought in a live jazz drummer and they just sounded louder, like there was no PA in between. Even the little NEXO PS8 two-way sounded way bigger than its small size. And, all of the subwoofers for the line arrays – which were shaking my pant legs at 100’ – are cardioid subs. Even during the “fairly loud” cuts (think aggressive Sunday morning volume), we could easily hold a conversation on the stage behind the subwoofers.”

Armstrong added that Pastor Delfs was appreciative of CCI’s insistence on NEXO. “David has provided LifePointe with five previous systems and each one has progressed in terms of quality and capabilities.”

“Every Sunday, one of our congregation members emotes about the system, which is so significant to my passion to lead people to a better way, that I’m thrilled beyond words,” states Pastor Delfs. “I love the NEXO sound system. David and CCI hit it out of the ballpark.”

Lyric Opera of Chicago Chooses Meyer Sound Line Arrays for its Tribute to American Theatre

Named “one of the best opera companies in the world” by Esquire magazine, the Lyric Opera of Chicago presented an American contribution to the operatic stage at the close of its season—Show Boat. To properly present Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s seminal masterpiece that was first performed in 1927, Lyric Opera chose a large complement of sound reinforcement equipment from Meyer Sound.

“As a company, we’re not just doing the great works of European culture but also the great works of American culture,” explains Drew Landmesser, production and technical director for Lyric Opera of Chicago. “This is a 3,600-plus-seat house, a huge hall to be doing a musical. To get everyone’s diction—their song and spoken words—and to be as crisp and clear as possible in a house this size is quite a challenge.”

With a long tradition of natural acoustics, amplified sound represents a significant departure for the company. “It’s a deep auditorium,” Landmesser illustrates, “and we do not want the sound from our speaker system to be slapping the walls and coming back as unwanted reflections. Where we’re focusing that and how we’re using it is a matter of great precision.”

To meet its exacting needs, the Lyric Opera selected a Meyer Sound system comprised of 10 M2D line array loudspeakers, 16 MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers, two CQ-1 loudspeakers, one 700-HP subwoofer, a Galileo loudspeaker management system, and two MPS-488HPe power supply units.

“One of the things that Meyer has been especially important in is trying to maintain the natural acoustic sound,” Landmesser says. “The line arrays are such an elegant solution for getting a lot of sound into the house yet really being precise about where that sound is going. Without a doubt, this has been some of the best sound we’ve had in our auditorium.”

Chicago-based sales, rental, and live events company TC Furlong provided the Meyer Sound package for the Lyric Opera. “It’s our go-to loudspeaker,” says Jeff Cech, general manager at TC Furlong. “We’ve been a Meyer Sound dealer for 18 years. Meyer is also the primary loudspeaker brand in our rental department and live event business.

“John and Helen [Meyer] have such a dedication to consistency and quality,” Cech adds. “It’s so important when you’re putting multiple loudspeakers next to one another that they all sound exactly the same, and I don’t think Meyer has any peer. They stock deeply—the parts are always available. And the seminars that they do all over the world, which we’ve participated in and hosted, are amazing. We just don’t find that whole range of support with other manufacturers.”
