Dr. Donald E. Panoz Appointed Chairman of the Board at NanoLumens

Tony Nominee LEAP OF FAITH Takes Broadway Sound Production to New Heights Using Neumann Digital Microphone Technology

OLD LYME, Conn. – May 9, 2012 – Audio specialist Sennheiser announced that LEAP OF FAITH, Broadway’s latest roof-raising Tony-nominated musical, is the first Broadway production to utilize digital microphone technology from Neumann. The musical, which features a score by eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken, opened late last month at the St. James Theater on 44th Street and features no less than 12 Neumann digital microphones in the orchestra pits.

Broadway is widely recognized as maintaining the “gold standard” when it comes to live sound production quality; its sound designers routinely specify Sennheiser and Neumann microphones and wireless equipment for their unrivalled sonic performance on both the stage and in the orchestra pit. For LEAP OF FAITH, Sound Designer John Shivers and Associate Sound Designer/Mixer David Patridge specified Neumann digital mics on the brass and woodwind sections of the orchestra, which were then fed into a Neumann DMI before reaching the DiGiCo SD7 digital console.

LEAP OF FAITH has two separate orchestra pits, both of which use the digital microphones. The pit below the stage and directly in front of the audience contain the woodwind section, which uses four Neumann KM 184 Ds as overheads and four TLM 103 Ds in a low position, approximately 15 inches off the floor and resting at a 120-degree angle towards the instrument. The other pit was situated below and to the rear of the stage and contained the brass section, which was miked with four TLM 103 Ds in a low position similar to that of the woodwinds.

An exquisitely pristine sound character
“We had already specified the analog versions of these microphones when Masque Sound brought up the possibility of our using digital microphones on this show,” Shivers recalls. “We jumped at the chance to use them since I am always interested in increasing the overall sound quality of the production. We didn’t get a chance to A/B these against their analog counterparts in a controlled environment, but my sense is that there is an increased clarity and transparency to these microphones.”

“These microphones exhibit an open, detailed sound,” Patridge adds. “I think additional clarity is evident in the high frequency range and the microphones themselves require less EQ. As for the noise floor, it is non-existent: these microphones are absolutely pristine.”

Realizing the benefits of remote control
According to Patridge, the benefits of using Neumann digital mics in the theater extend well beyond just the pristine sound, since many parameters such as shelving, padding and even polar patterns can be remote controlled from the FOH position*: “The pit can be a difficult area to access, and during sound checks I often have to send somebody in there to ensure there is no shelving or padding on the mics,” he observes. “With the Neumann digital mics, I can control all these settings from software interface on the console, which saves time and gives my production team one less thing to worry about.”

Shivers agrees that being able to control the microphones from a remote location is beneficial: “If a musician is playing particularly loud, having the ability to go to a control panel and adjust the padding could be very helpful. Also, having the capability to remotely switch to a hyper-cardioid from a cardioid pattern could give you a tighter sound and more rejection without having to move the microphone position. But for me, the audio quality is always most important.”

Prior to its official opening on Broadway on April 26th, LEAP OF FAITH was in previews for three straight weeks, during which time the Neumann digital microphones were put through their paces. “We were very impressed with how they sounded right out of the box,” Shivers says. “We knew from the reputation of the company that it would be an improved product, and now we can assuredly say that it is. The quality of these microphones is of a very, very high standard and I would love to use them again.”

Baker Audio Installs HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays at University of North Carolina’s Kenan Memorial Stadium

NORTHRIDGE, California – Baker Audio of Norcross, Georgia, recently upgraded the audio system at the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) Kenan Memorial Stadium, home of Tar Heels football since 1927, with HARMAN’s JBL VLA line arrays. Baker Audio shares strong ties to UNC and installed an innovative sound system to complement the stadium’s new “horseshoe” design.

Keith Hicks, President of Baker Audio, took great pride in revamping the sound in his alma mater’s stadium, where he played four decades ago as a scholarship UNC football player. The 64,000-capacity stadium was renovated from its original shape to the horseshoe pattern, which required a completely upgraded sound system, designed by Jack McCallum of Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc. Hanging from the new scoreboard, provided by CBS Sports, Baker Audio supplied 22 JBL VLA601 3-way full-range loudspeakers on each side of the scoreboard, while 23 AM5212 2-way loudspeakers were installed in the “bowl” under the balcony areas, which provided delayed sound coverage.

The system is powered by Crown amplifiers-43 MA-5000i’s, 14 MA-9000i’s and 14 MA-12000i’s accompanied by four CTS2000LITE amplifiers-and is processed through BSS London DSP technology with 11 BLU 800′s as well as 36 BLUCARD-OUT and four BLUCARD-IN analog cards which route all of the audio for the PA, play-by-play and music to achieve that powerful game day sound.

“The JBL system was peaking at 112dB-we’re rocking,” Hicks said. “The VLA line arrays are outstanding. The low-end response is spectacular and we continue to receive compliments on the clarity and coverage of the sound. The UNC athletic staff is pleased with all aspects of the installation and we’ve even received calls from businesses around the city saying they can hear the music during games.”

Working under tight time constraints, Hicks noted one challenge associated with fitting Kenan Memorial Stadium with the new speaker system. While preparing to hoist the VLA speakers, Joe Kimsey, Project Manager for Baker Audio, noticed that the stacks, which each measure more than 25 feet tall, would have less than one foot of clearance within the housing. Baker Audio was able to overcome this challenge by utilizing a 300-foot crane to carefully hang the speakers. Greg Coddington, project engineer for WJHW, was instrumental in the success of the system installation and coordination, says Hicks.

David Rotman of Rotman Architecture added, “In many aspects, it was a very complex construction project; however, due to the dedicated team at Baker, the Kenan Stadium at the University of North Carolina can deliver that ‘wow’ factor with an innovative sound system that, not only works in conjunction with the new, state-of-the-art scoreboard, but provides a state-of-the-art sound system experience at every seating location throughout the building.”

“The VLA line arrays give the stadium much more horsepower than it’s ever had,” Hicks continued. “Every aspect of the installation, from coordinating with the construction, to securing the arrays on the video board was excellent. The entire system is extremely impressive.”

“It was a great opportunity for me, personally, to fit the stadium with sound after years of attending games and even playing football there 100 years ago,” Hicks joked.

Michael Conner Mixes Three Evenings With Paul Simon and Wynton Marsalis Using HARMAN’s Studer and Soundcraft Consoles

NEW YORK, New York – It’s the kind of extraordinary musical event that happens once in a lifetime: quintessential singer/songwriter Paul Simon got together with iconic jazzman, composer and music educator Wynton Marsalis for a very special three nights of live performances at the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. The event featured Simon and Marsalis performing all-new orchestrations of Simon’s songs with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and special guest Aaron Neville. HARMAN’s Studer(r) Vista 5 and Soundcraft(r) Vi6 digital consoles were brought in to handle the considerable mixing requirements for the concert.

“There were more than 100 inputs for this show,” noted Michael Conner, Simon’s front of house engineer and a veteran mixer with more than 25 years’ experience. “We had to mic not only Paul, Wynton and Neville but the entire Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Simon’s touring band.”

Conner had to combine two different approaches to mixing for these concerts. “Paul is usually mixed more for an arena or theater-type show, while Wynton’s is more of a ‘natural’ sound, combining the room, band and PA as one sonic unit,” he noted. “The sound is less ‘poppy’ and more ‘orchestral’ maybe, compared to Paul. It made this concert more challenging than most because we had to combine those two different styles of mixing together and get something that worked.

“On top of it all, the whole thing was just gigantic. I had to deal with a huge amount of inputs. Having to mic that many people was incredibly daunting. I had overheads everywhere.”

Conner and his team came up with the solution of using the Studer Vista 5 in conjunction with the Soundcraft Vi6 as a sidecar. “I’d had about four years’ experience with the Vista 5, having used it on tours with David Byrne and then with Paul,” Conner added. “Wynton is normally mixed on a Vi6, so using the two together just made sense, along with the fact that they’re both HARMAN products and are easy to interface with each other.”

“One of the best things about the Vista 5 is when you’re looking to access a particular function,” Conner continued. “I came from an analog background. This is not a confusing digital desk. The channel strip is in front of you at all times. You can reach the gain pot; you can reach the EQ; anything you need is always right in front of you. Touch a button and there it is-everything is easy to get to, making it easy to operate and smooth to mix on.”

Such nimbleness is especially handy when mixing Simon. “Paul makes a lot of changes to the arrangements on a daily basis,” Conner said. “In his opinion the song was born when it was put on the album and then it grows up and evolves through time. So we might come into a show and change a song completely, change an arrangement or change a part. That would be tough if it were difficult to move around the desk. Paul also expects that when he makes a change, he’ll hear it quickly. The console allows me to do that because the interface is so straightforward. Paul is an ‘analog guy’ and he’s used to grabbing a knob and hearing something happen. Some of the other consoles out there are great, but are a little cumbersome when it comes to making adjustments or changes. That’s one of the reasons I prefer the Studer.”

The concert was a resounding success, according to Conner. “We were able to achieve a really good sonic blend between all the musicians and performers while maintaining clarity and isolation of the vocalists and instruments,” Conner pointed out. “By the time we were into the concert, I knew we had nailed it.”

Conner started his career in Los Angeles around 25 years ago; learning by working in the area’s recording studios, starting his own sound company and moving to his current position with Clair Global. “I’ve done tour sound, theater sound, the whole nine yards. It’s been a 25-year journey and now I’m really happy with Clair-without them I wouldn’t be sitting here right now doing front of house for Paul.”

Drummer Rick Latham’s Groove Workshop Tours Europe With HARMAN’s AKG Drumset Groove Pack

VIENNA, Austria – World-renown drummer and “groove” activist, Rick Latham recently wrapped up his 30th year of touring the globe. The artist entertained and educated aspiring and professional drummers in a workshop dedicated to the music business, highlighting the art of drumming. Armed with HARMAN’s AKG Drumset Groove Pack, solo artist, author, composer and current touring drummer for GRAMMY-winning artist Juice Newton, Latham’s educational sessions touched on multiple facets of musical education, wowing students and fans during the four-week group workshop.

The workshops focused on mastering the drums; from essential playing tips and helping individual artists find their own sound, to miking, recording and mixing final products. “That style,” or the LA/American sounding drum sound has been Latham’s focus during his career and the workshops elaborate on the art of perfecting the sound for the enthusiastic students.

Latham began the 2012 Groove workshop with two clinics/master class performances in Northern Germany – in Lubeck at Musikhaus Andresen and Rendsburg at Musickmarkt – where the drummer demonstrated his finer points of groove and feel for percussion artists. Playing funk and R&B, Latham stressed the importance of great live sound miking and proper tuning.

The next leg brought Latham to Mannheim, Germany, where his master class was held at Pop Akademie – one of the premier contemporary music schools in Europe. There, he played with Frank Itt, the renowned German bassist who holds a teaching position at the school. Latham then stopped at Paderborn and Schlangen, Germany, where his audience was a high school music class curious about becoming professional musicians. That night, Latham offered a clinic for a local community theatre and performed with enthusiastic local musicians.

Latham rounded out his tour through Istanbul, Turkey, Milan, Italy and returned to Germany for the final stretch. During each event, Latham utilized the Drumset Grove Pack to demonstrate great sound and the proper mechanics to mic a drum kit.

“The AKG Drumset Groove Pack does just that, Grooves,” stated Latham. “It sounds cliché, but the most important aspect of music is sound and the Groove Pack allows my signature sound to flow as it should be heard. I truly believe in the functionality of the AKG mics, and their ease of use and quality allow me to provide a great example of professional grade music during my workshops.”

Latham’s audience was offered additional captivating information during sessions as the drummer went into the fine details of the business of music. Gefen Extends HDMI Wirelessly with Higher Resolution, Cost-Effective Next Generation Solutions

Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced the availability of two new GefenTV Wireless for HDMI Extenders, offering smaller footprints, lower pricing and better performance. The ability to deliver uncompressed high definition 1080p full HD with no latency makes both solutions ideal for both consumer and professional applications. Each offers a quick and easy set-up with no cables required.

The GefenTV Wireless for HDMI Short Range (SR) sends HDMI to any remote display located within an 80 feet (25m) radius of the sender module that discreetly plugs-in to the source. It works with all laptops, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and any source equipped with HDMI. It is recommended for in-room applications, such as conference rooms. Ease of set-up and the ability to connect three sender units to one receiver makes switching in-between different sources very simple. A USB port on the sender can be used for power.

The GefenTV Wireless for HDMI Long Range (LR) includes small sender and receiver units that connect any source equipped with HDMI to any remote display within a 100 foot (30m) radius of the sender. This long range model has the added ability to transmit high definition audio and video through walls, further expanding its applicability.

Both extenders support HDCP compliance, 3DTV pass-through and hi-def resolutions up to 1080p. Audio features include Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and PCM digital audio streams up to 7.1 channels.

With both models, up to three sender units can be connected, so three sources can be accessed through switching by an IR remote control, which is included.

Both GefenTV Wireless for HDMI solutions come with an MSRP of $399, begin shipping on May 13th and operate in the 5Ghz frequency band.
