Chyron and Cell Journalist Team Up To Integrate User-Generated Content Into News Graphics

New Partnership Uses Open Standard MOS Redirection to Move Assets Across Platforms

MELVILLE, N.Y. — May 30, 2012 — Chyron today announced that it has integrated the company’s CAMIO graphics asset management server with the Web-based Cell Journalist application to streamline the incorporation of user-generated video content into a news rundown. This integration enables producers to locate Cell Journalist content through the Associated Press ENPS interface and quickly move it to the CAMIO server for playout to air. With this capability, broadcasters can maximize the value of user-generated content — such as media captured and uploaded by a field journalist or just a person off the street — which proves particularly useful during live breaking news and severe weather coverage.

“In the past, an integration of this sophistication would have been costly both in terms of development time and money,” said Jim Martinolich, vice president of integration technology at Chyron. “Now, however, we have been able to leverage MOS Redirection, part of the open-standard MOS communications protocol, to simplify the sharing of content among systems. In doing so, we make it easy for producers to access unique or timely user-generated content through the same ENPS interface they use to create their news stories. This is a simple solution with a huge benefit — namely, a more relevant and visually rich news product, without added workflow complexity.”

Cell Journalist is a comprehensive platform that allows users of mobile devices to upload, view, and share images and videos with a news station in seconds. Through the integration of Chyron’s CAMIO and Cell Journalist, a producer working in ENPS can locate uploaded stills and video hosted by Cell Journalist and then simply drag and drop them into a Chyron template and into the newsroom rundown.

“Chyron and AP ENPS share our vision of breaking down silos and making content available to the entire newsroom. This integration will help stations win the big story by providing real time access to content submitted by audience and staff alike,” said Parker Polidor, president of Cell Journalist.

“This is an excellent example of how MOS and Open Standards can be used to build a completely transparent bridge from a cloud media source to a local production channel,” said Mike Palmer, director of design and integration strategy for AP ENPS. “Chyron and Cell Journalist have remarkably simplified the journalist’s job by hiding the complex operations normally required to manually download, transcode, and copy media from one source to another. This ultimately makes the journalist significantly faster, more competitive, and more efficient.”

Polish PA Consortium Makes Major Commitment to HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN Professional’s Polish distributor, ESS Audio, has announced a major sale of a HARMAN JBL VTX line array system including Crown Audio VRacks to a consortium of PA companies in the Krakow region.

Between them, Audio-Tech and Music Cook Sound Design (MCSD) have purchased 64 of the VTX V25 line array elements and 44 G28/S28 arrayable subwoofers. To power its VTX system, the consortium has invested in 66 Crown I-Tech IT 12000HD amplifiers, divided into 22 VRack systems.

With an active roster of concerts, festivals and other events, the companies are now ready to fire up JBL’s impressive new large-format system that features the revolutionary new D2 dual-diaphragm, dual-voice-coil compression drivers mounted on a next generation waveguide.

Working with ESS Audio, the two rental companies took the opportunity to introduce the system to fellow industry professionals at a live event. Confirmed ESS Audio director, Witold Karalow, “The reaction couldn’t have been more positive. All sound engineers and event company representatives were stunned by the SPL and overall sound quality of the system.”

The event was supported by Gert Sanner, HARMAN Professional’s Tour Sound Market Manager (EMEA), who trained Audio-Tech and MCSD technicians before setting up the system for the show based around 15 of the V25′s on each main PA hang, with 10 of the G28 subs on each side.

The consortium had been close to investing in an alternative system when they learned that the new JBL VTX system was being launched at January’s NAMM Show in California. On the strength of the spec, the recommendation from ESS Audio and the reputation of JBL, they changed tack and placed an order-in fact, the first time they heard the system was in March, at the HARMAN/AED Rent VTX Listening Experience in Belgium.

“They were already confident the system would sound great because of the construction of the new driver and because of the many others innovations in VTX,” confirmed Karalow. “Besides, JBL is known as the leader in pro audio.”

Karalow’s own first experience of VTX was at the HARMAN Professional conference prior to NAMM. “I was very excited about the sound compared with the primary systems it was competing against-it was certainly a lot better in the high frequency,” he noted. “But when I heard the system complete with the G28′s in Poland, I was speechless. The subs sounded just amazing-fast and clear-while the power is huge.”

SIM Digital Acquires Master Key Post

Los Angeles, CA – SIM Digital announced today that it has acquired the finishing division of Master Key, a Los Angeles-based post-production house. The acquisition comes on the heel of last week’s announcement of the company’s name change from Sim Video to SIM Digital.

Known primarily as a camera rental house, the company made headlines when it acquired Bling Digital in 2009 to bolster its off-line editorial business and add file-based digital dailies to its range of services. Explained SIM Chief Strategy Officer, James Martin, “With both the Master Key and Bling Digital acquisitions, SIM places itself in a position where we can offer our clients a complete package of services, from the camera all the way to a color-corrected master for broadcast.”

As part of the deal, Master Key co-owner, Elan Dassani, will join SIM Digital as its new Vice-President of Bling Finishing Services. Also joining the SIM Digital team will be renowned colorist, Chris Jacobson as the company’s new Vice President of Creative Services.

“We looked hard at the existing post business models out there, and merging with a progressive company like SIM Digital made complete sense to us,” said Dassani. “Our clients can now work with a company that can handle all of its production and post production needs, resulting in greater cost incentives.”

That sentiment is echoed by John DeBoer, COO of SIM Digital: “With SIM Digital and our Bling Digital division, we currently supply camera, on-set data management, digital dailies [with a high-speed data-pipeline to remote editorial staff], Avid and FCP system rentals and now, with the acquisition of Master Key, conform and color-correction services – one company handling all the data from beginning to end,”

SIM Digital CEO, Rob Sim noted, “This is a very exciting time for our company. In August, our CTO, Chris Parker will move to our Los Angeles office to oversee and manage our post services division with Elan. I’m very proud of our company as it continues to re-invent itself to create better workflow models for our clients in a constantly changing digital environment.”

The new finishing division will be located at the company’s Los Angeles facility in Hollywood. SIM Digital will promote this recent acquisition at Cine Gear. SIM Digital will host an after-show party during Cine Gear, on June 2nd, at their Hollywood location.

About SIM Digital:

With offices across Canada, the USA and China, SIM Digital is a world class rental facility specializing in digital production equipment and workflow services. The company’s services continue to grow through its highly innovative Bling Digital division which offers expert workflow solutions including on-set data management, video assist, digital dailies, LTO tape archiving and post-production equipment for digitally acquired productions.
