Christie®, a global provider of visual display solutions, is proud to announce that the Dolby Theatre(SM), will be equipped with the Christie Duo™ for its big-screen needs, including the June 18 World Premiere of Disney•Pixar’s “Brave.”

The green-carpet event, which marks the grand opening for the Dolby Theatre, is a special presentation for Film Independent’s 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival. Premiering in Dolby’s latest audio innovation, Dolby® Atmos™ and Dolby 3D, a state-of-the-art imaging solution providing audiences with a superior 3D experience, “Brave” is an epic tale set in the mystical Scottish Highlands where the film’s headstrong protagonist, Merida, is forced to discover the meaning of true bravery. The action adventure hits theaters nationwide on June 22, 2012.

“To truly bring audiences into the onscreen adventure at the Dolby Theatre, we are pleased to be working with Christie to deliver a premium Dolby 3D experience,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. “The Dolby Theatre continues our long commitment to Hollywood and the entertainment industry and the World Premiere of Disney•Pixar’s ‘Brave’ in Dolby Atmos and Dolby 3D, with the help of Christie, will transport the audience into the onscreen adventure with the most life-like experience ever offered.”

Christie Duo, available for the 2K or 4K Christie Solaria™ Series digital cinema projectors, is an integration kit specially designed to optimize 3D and other special effects on the largest screens. It features a choice of configurations including a compact stacking system for 3D installations, or a physical configuration that exactly aligns every pixel on the screen for optimal 2D and 3D presentations. With automated features that calibrate, align and optimize the images for 2K or 4K projectors, Christie Duo delivers a completely seamless, premium movie experience for the world’s largest screens at a cost that all manner and size of exhibitors can afford.

The Dolby Theatre will be using the configuration of two projectors stacked vertically. Whether used for world premieres or thousands of showings later, the Christie Duo promises the brightest picture quality available for 2D or 3D on premium-size screens.

“Christie is dedicated to giving exhibitors of all types the best projection available for their unique needs, particularly as consumers come to expect 3D and other technical innovations,” said Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “With our technical expertise and worldwide network of installation partners, we can deliver quickly and cost-effectively, allowing our customers to create and deliver their own, branded premium theatre experience.”

Because it features live events as well as blockbuster movie premieres, the theatre’s projection system needs to adapt easily and quickly to changing needs. The technical quality of Christie’s Solaria™ projector, Christie Duo and Christie’s commitment to fast custom installation, gives the facility new capabilities for premium 3D and 2D projection now and for the future.

About “Brave”
Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor. Opens on June 22, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters. “Brave” is rated PG by the MPAA. Pixine Relies On Anton/Bauer CINE VCLX Batteries to Power Through Productions in Extreme Environments

HyTRON 140 and DIONIC HC Complete High-Performance Package

SANTIAGO, CHILE, JUNE 18, 2012—For the last 12 years, film and digital cinema camera rental company Pixine has relied on power solutions from Anton/Bauer®, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a premier global provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries. When the company saw an increasing number of clients shooting with the ARRI ALEXA, it turned to Anton/Bauer’s CINE VCLX battery to help match the camera’s power demands and hold up to the tough environmental situations its users face around the world.

Known for providing equipment and support for production companies, Pixine works with both national and foreign clientele filming television commercials, corporate videos and feature films. When Pixine needed a battery that could match the ALEXA’s power demands and support long hours of filming in such extreme climates as the deserts and rainforests of Chile, Anton/Bauer’s CINE VCLX provided the optimal solution. With its 560 watts of power, two 14.4V outputs and one 28V output, the CINE VCLX from Anton/Bauer offered maximum battery performance paired with superior reliability for Pixine’s clients.

“The CINE VCLX has been a pleasure to work with,” says Rodrigo Lizana, owner and head of technology at Pixine. “I don’t have to think about batteries anymore, which is a big help when filming in extreme weather conditions. We have been shooting by the sea, in the mountains and the driest desert in the world, here in Chile. This is a very tough job and our equipment has to deal with it on a regular basis. So, for me, the best technology is the one that goes unnoticed—it’s the technology that lets you work without worrying about it.”

Pixine recently collaborated with a client that was using the ALEXA on an eight-day project, with production lasting 15 hours each day. With the CINE VCLX, the client was able to power the camera for about five hours at a time, using only two batteries per day, as opposed to needing six when it was using 24V batteries previously. Known for providing extended run-times for some of the most popular film and digital cinema cameras, including ARRI, RED, Sony and Panavision, CINE VCLX batteries provide all the safety and high power-draw performance of Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) cell chemistry technology in a power package specifically designed for the integration of 24V film and 14V video equipment. The high-power 28V output is also capable of powering 200-w HMI lights, lighting panels and portable microwave units. The CINE VCLX batteries feature a RealTime® LCD that accurately displays remaining run-time and a visual LED warning indicator when 15 minutes of run-time remain.

Pixine also utilized Anton/Bauer’s HyTRON 140 when the crew needed to switch to a handheld camera, and powered the field monitors and the KI PRO recorder with DIONIC® HCs. The HyTRON 140 is a high-power NiMH battery system suited to the power demands of today’s high-definition equipment and on-camera lighting systems. In lower-power applications, it can provide power for many hours without limits or travel restrictions. The HyTRON 140 also offers an excellent counterbalance to offset the weight of a lens.

DIONIC HC provides 91Wh and can operate a 40-watt HD camera for more than two hours. Transported as carry-on luggage without restrictions, the DIONIC HC is the perfect lightweight battery for shooting on location. Part of the company’s Logic Series® batteries, the DIONIC HC is suitable for powering high-current applications in a lightweight package. Working closely with cell manufacturers, the HC series incorporates high-capacity cells offering 10 amps. To continually ensure cell protection and performance integrity, a special honeycomb cell pack design protects the cells. An enhanced RealTime® display indicates up to nine hours of run-time (under low power-load conditions) using a seven-segment display enclosed by four circular arcs that indicate 15-minute time intervals, ensuring high confidence in those filming with the battery. The three-battery combination for one camera proved to be a smart solution for the project.

Another recent project found Pixine turning to the CINE VCLX once again. Pixine was working on a television spot for a mobile phone company in Europe. The company wanted to have two lighting units and one camera unit so that by the time the camera unit and the first lighting unit were filming at location A, the second lighting unit would be preparing the set for location B. This meant that the camera unit needed to work through 24 hours on the first and third days, a difficult task.

“This project would have been impossible without the three CINE VCLX batteries we used,” says Lizana. “The batteries lasted five hours and took only seven hours to be recharged and back to work. We never had to use a power supply, wait for batteries to charge or ask for more blocks. In this business you have to be perfect or as close to perfect as possible. Your clients put a lot of time and effort into one day of shooting. If the equipment is not up to the task at hand, people lose time and money and you lose credibility. There’s no point in having the best equipment if you won’t have the power at hand to turn it on.”

Waldorf Astoria Chooses IMT & Meraki for High-performance Wi-Fi

Roosevelt New Orleans Upgrades as Premiere Hilton Business Showcase

Management at one of Hilton Hotels’ most prestigious properties, The Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria in New Orleans, was having a Wi-Fi crisis.  The proliferation of mobile devices was overtaxing traditional wireless networking and the The Roosevelt was feeling the pinch.

Superior Wi-Fi at top hotels is no longer an option when it comes to high level conferences and company meetings.  Management at the Waldorf-Astoria called on Integrated Media Technologies, Inc. (IMT) to find a solution to the density of mobile devices that was overburdening their Wi-Fi spaces.

“We thought we had the latest and greatest system, but apparently we were wrong,”  explained Fred Sidhva, a top Hilton manager.  “When our clientele is paying good money for their corporate gatherings, we have to give them a totally reliable Wi-Fi experience.  We needed a new approach, so we contacted IMT.”

Throughout this century and the last, The Roosevelt has strived to provide world leaders, business executives and entertainment icons with an unrivaled meetings and events service. Twenty-three separate and unique meeting rooms and 3 grand ballrooms comprise the hotel’s 5574m_/60 000 sq. ft. of event space offering a wealth of venue options.

“This project was a challenge with a tight deadline,” remarked Garth Gilmour, IMT’s VP Professional Services. “When the Waldorf contacted us, they expressed concern about the supposedly solid Wi-Fi system they had installed.  IMT had already gone through the Hilton standardization process, so we visited the New Orleans location, created a new design for them and were given the green light to proceed.”

Gilmour and the IMT team chose to develop the solution with the new Meraki MR14 dual-radio 802.11n access point series.  “Meraki is leading the pack today because they have realtime tools that are built in,” continued Gilmour.  “We’ve enhanced and integrated those tools through third party interfaces, allowing us to do  a fast and dynamic analysis of the hotel environment.  Just a year ago, that would have required a $25,000 analyzer and a team of technicians working for weeks.”

“We just didn’t have the luxury of time and another giant budget to fix this,” added Fred Sidhva.  “We gave IMT a very small window to work in — just two nights when the conference rooms were vacant between midnight and 3 AM.  We needed a product that could be deployed very effectively, very efficiently, and very quickly.  IMT hit the ground running and got the job done right, the first time.”

An effective wireless deployment requires universal coverage throughout the hotel meeting spaces.  An efficient deployment is like a military rescue: get in and get out.  Gilmour concluded,”We’ve found that with Meraki, the installation time is cut by 40%.  We have to guarantee that everything is working perfectly, but we also have to thoroughly train the hotel IT staff so that they have got everything covered when we leave.”

XPAND 3D Announces High Frame Rate Capability at CineEurope 2012

BARCELONA, Spain – At CineEurope 2012, XPAND 3D is announcing that all XPAND glasses fully support single and double flash high frame rate (HFR) viewing, answering the demand for HFR capability in 3D cinema systems.

Today, cinemas are showing 3D movies at 24 frames per second (FPS) per eye (48 FPS in total), with left and right images (fields) being sequentially displayed. Each field is also flashed three times (triple flashing), therefore the field rate-corresponding to the shuttering rate of the 3D glasses-is 144 Hz.

New 3D movies, shot at high frame rates, can be shot at 60 FPS or 48 FPS. These movies can be screened without any flashing, resulting in field rates of 120 Hz and 96 Hz, respectively. All XPAND 3D cinema products support single flash HFR.

“It is still too soon to know if flashing will be used with HFR content; therefore the technology to accomplish this is built into all new XPAND products,” said Maria Costeira, CEO, XPAND 3D. “If double flash is chosen, new 3D movies produced at 48 FPS will be screened by showing the same frame twice, resulting in 192 Hz field rate.

Every XPAND 3D system including legacy systems are already HFR single flash-ready. XPAND 3D is committed to providing exhibitor partners with comprehensive inclusive solutions and will support double flash HFR if this HFR practice becomes prevalent in the future. Going HFR double flash with XPAND 3D is an easy and cost-effective procedure. For more information about XPAND’s upgrade procedure, please send an email to info@xpandcinema.com.
