Renowned Psy-Trance Group Infected Mushroom Takes Music to the Next Level with SmithsonMartin Emulator

HOLLYWOOD, June 28, 2012— Multi-touch software developer SmithsonMartin Inc., announced that renowned Israeli trance band Infected Mushroom is using Emulator DVS to enhance the stage performance of the band’s current world tour.

Infected Mushroom has been pushing the edge of electronic psychedelic trance music since the duo emerged on the electronic music scene with its ground-breaking 1999 album, The Gathering. Known for its combination of analogue and digital instruments and vocals in the evolving psy-trance sub-genre, the group recently turned to SmithsonMartin’s Emulator DVS to makes its live show more technically and visually stunning.

The Emulator DVS, which was introduced in November 2011 as the next generation of DJ systems, provides a multi-touch MIDI control interface on a huge transparent screen to artists. For electronic artists, the software and technology offers the ability to customize the multi-touch layout of the screen so it fits to the artist, rather than forcing the artist to conform to it.

“In the beginning, we thought it might just look cool, but it’s actually useful,” said Erez Eisen, one-half of Infected Mushroom. “This is obviously the only product that does and looks something like that.”

With a futuristic stage design by Vita Motus supported by 3D visuals by another company using Emulator, V-Squared Labs, Infected Mushroom found Emulator DVS fit right into the atmosphere they were trying to create while also offering a unique control experience provided by no other system. Reliable and flexible in its design and application delivery, Emulator Modular has transformed electronic music and provided Infected Mushroom with a system that has prompted spectacular reviews from audience members and critics alike.

“It’s open. You can do whatever you need. If you need the basic stuff for DJ-ing, it has presets ready, which is great. If you want to go beyond that and do crazy controlling, you design your own interface. It’s simple with drag-and-drop,” said Eisen, who is planning on adding two more Emulator DVS units to his repertoire for studio recording purposes.

In the future, Infected Mushroom plans to expand on its use of the Emulator DVS platform for modular synths and to continue using it to enhance the futuristic multimedia atmosphere of its live shows.

“It’s not just beauty. It’s a really, really powerful tool,” Eisen said. “I learned the tool in two days while I was doing other things. I don’t know how I didn’t have it before.”

K-array Ensures Graduation Message to San Diego Bernardo Heights Middle School Students is Heard Loud and Clear

San Diego, Calif. – June 28, 2012 — The K-array KR400S ultra-light powered speaker system provided a clear and superb listening experience for faculty, staff, students, friends and family at the San Diego Bernardo Heights Middle School graduation ceremony in mid-June.

Paul Svenson, owner of San Diego-based audio/video specialist PSAudioVideo, consulted with Sennheiser Area Sales Manager John R. Borja to outfit the outdoor ceremony with a single KR400S speaker, as well as Sennheiser ew 100 G3 wireless transmitters and receivers. Svenson ran the microphones directly into a PreSonus digital mixer, which was then connected to the K-array KR 400S.

“In previous years, people on the periphery of the 1,200-person crowd complained about not being able to hear very well, but this year, we received compliments,” said Svenson, who has been the school’s trusted provider of audio solutions for more than a half-dozen graduations in recent years. “I believe this was due to the effective sound dispersion characteristics of the K-array KR400S.”

Svenson adopted the KR400S after using a pair of the speakers to provide audio for an indoor concert for 3,000 people. The compact speakers were able to deliver so much power that Svenson immediately added them to his audio toolbox and now uses them for indoor and outdoor events.

For the graduation, Svenson set up only one KR400S, which he says provided more than enough coverage for entire area — including the 80-foot wide stage, the gallery of graduates, seating for family and friends, and standing room. Svenson said the KR400S not only provided high-quality sound to the entire graduation ceremony, but could also be heard across the parking lot to the local high school.

The KR400s cast a wide dispersion without any appreciable drop-off, giving Svenson a long throw to hit the very back row of people and the standing room only section, which he has not been able to achieve with other speakers.

In addition to the speeches given by graduates and faculty, the graduates and their families were also treated to the vocal harmonies of the school’s 250-singer choir, for which Svenson used three ew 100 G3 Sennheiser wireless microphones on the soloists, among other microphones.

“The K-array KR400S has surprised me time and again for its ability to throw long distances while still maintaining a consistently high sound quality,” Svenson said. “The choir leader was also very impressed with the speaker’s ability to cast a wide dispersion while retaining the sharpness needed in a vocalist microphone.”

BASSMAXX Shakes the Treehouse in South Beach

BASSMAXX - Treehouse club install - Miami

Treehouse, Miami’s Premier Award-Winning Techno Venue, Now Relies on 10 BASSMAXX Powered Enclosures for Supreme Bass-Crunching Low-End and No Hassle Results

Miami, June 28, 2012 — BASSMAXX (www.bassmaxx.com) has found a home in Treehouse…the immensely popular South Beach techno venue where low end and a high intensity crowd are married in a euphoria of music and dance. BASSMAXX provided and installed six self-powered double 18-inch subwoofers and four self-powered double 12-inch bass horn cabinets, complete with on-site system tuning and optimization, into the subsequently crowned Miami NewTimes “Best Small Music Venue – 2012”.

“These days, DJs’ demands on equipment are consistently surpassing the status quo of just a few years ago…low-end demands are the greatest, and often the weakest point in a sound system,” said Gregory Selph, Treehouse operating partner and a 23-year veteran of the nightclub industry. “Customers [had been] emailing and blogging about our amazing DJ lineups and constantly failing sound systems. We chose BASSMAXX after blowing up every other viable option on the market. Our sound tech labor invoices, let alone the parts, were sucking us dry. BASSMAXX is directly the opposite. BASSMAXX makes low end effortless…waterproof, drink-proof, DJ-proof, self powered, self cooling, self monitoring, self limiting, and just bass crushing. Wheel it in, plug it in, ready to begin.”

Treehouse now utilizes BASSMAXX on two dance floors:
• Main Room: A Sub-Mergence system consisting of 4 x SS218-A self-powered double 18-inch subwoofers, and 2 x X2C-A self-powered bass horns.
• Room Two: A Sub-Mergence system consisting of 2 x SS218-A self-powered double 18-inch subwoofers, and 2 x X2C-A self-powered bass horns.

Open for approximately a year-and-a-half and gaining the reputation as Miami’s premier techno venue, Treehouse combines 7,000-square-feet of indoor and outdoor entertainment space. Treehouse is known as THE underground DJ venue, specializing in European techno bookings weekly. The customer demographic is a self-described downtown/midtown/design-district/hipster/artist crowd, which is a far cry from the normal South Beach tourist or commercial throng. Treehouse is a locals’ hot spot with a constant influx of educated European tourists, and prides itself as being incredibly inviting to all, with a “be yourself door policy”, and no velvet rope pretentiousness. It’s all about the music and BASSMAXX is now a large part of that experience.

“David brought a couple of pieces of his Ultra Music Festival sound system in for an impromptu demo after load-out from the festival,” Selph explained. “His demo was impressive to say the least. Everything attached to the walls [was] shaking and falling down [and] his equipment wasn’t even working hard…and it had just taken beating after beating at Ultra in the Miami heat and salty humidity. Our team kept talking about the demo for two months as we weighed and tested all other sound companies’ proposals. Each proposal led us back to BASSMAXX’s effortless demo that had impressed us so.”

Added David Lee, president of BASSMAXX, “We stopped by Treehouse on our way out of town, rolled in four of the SS218s, plugged them in to extension cords and split the signal off the mixer with a Y adapter. The effect on the walls and décor was pretty interesting, so say the least. I could tell they had never had bass like that in the room before and I think it worried them at first. I assured them that we could fairly well contain the bass indoors by using placement and delays to target the nulls at the doorways but they would probably have to glue and screw down everything on the walls. We also discussed the Sub-Mergence technology that adds massive dynamic impact to the deep bass of the SS218s, which is the direction they decided to take.”

Selph explained that besides the impressive demo, one of the deciding factors in choosing BASSMAXX for Treehouse was BASSMAXX president David Lee’s accessibility and approachability. He said that he’s had clubs with the most well known names in sound but never once knew the people behind the product personally, let alone been able to have conversations relating to his venues’ sound.

“With David, [it was the] complete opposite,” continued Selph. “He’s available and interested and genuinely concerned and wants as much as we do for his product to be the best it can be and leave a lasting positive impression. His install was well beyond what we anticipated. He spent three days in the sweltering heat here in Miami with no AC, solving problems we never knew we had and leaving us with a no stress, virtually self-maintained product. My nights used to be a series of flip outs and stress overloads running around the club fixing sound issues…checking levels, making sure connections or drivers or amps had not broken or overheated. Now I can focus on the business and sales and customers. The system he left us with no longer requires my attention, at all. I turn it on at open and turn it off at close, and listen to all of the praise in between. Never have we had this situation here. It’s been put to the test by a number of big DJs lately and continues to just crush. I smile now every time I walk through the room.”

“In my next life, I’d like sole rights to be the exclusive BASSMAXX rep for the southeast,” Selph concluded. “This company and this product are bad ass and [BASSMAXX] has huge potential for growth. Miami continues to grow as an electronic music leader and when other venues find out about this product it will make my club competition just that much more relentless.”

Lee continued, “Working with Greg and the folks at Treehouse has been a real pleasure because they truly appreciate the sound quality and recognize the value of what we do to make their lives easier and help ensure their club brings audiences back again and again. Treehouse books great talent and the job of the sound system is to make sure everyone, including the owner, the promoter, the headliner, and all their fans, thoroughly enjoys the musical experience and wants to come right back for more.”

ASHLY’S PEMA COMBO DSP/AMP IMPROVES THE LOFTY ATMOSPHERE AT CALIFORNIA COUNTRY CLUB

buttecreek_exterior.JPGCHICO, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 2012: Nestled amid meticulously manicured grounds, the stately clubhouse of Butte Creek Country Club (BCCC) in Chico, California is – in addition to the ideal place to relax after a round of golf – a fabulous setting for weddings, fundraisers, and other events. However, until local integration firm Tolar AVL installed a sophisticated Ashly Pema 8250.70 Protea(tm) DSP Matrix Amplifier with Ashly neWR-5 remote wall panels, the clubhouse’s single-source sound reinforcement system was a source of frustration for BCCC management and staff.

“BCCC operates a very high-end facility, and required a sound system to match,” said Chuck Mahar, sales director and project manager with Tolar AVL. “The previous system included a large rack of amplifiers stacked with 70-volt transformers. There was a complete lack of DSP or equalization that meant that the entire clubhouse had to commit to the more

Iconyx Gives Initiatives of Change a Clear Hearing

Caux, Switzerland – June 2012… Above the clear waters of Lake Geneva, in the small village resort of Caux overlooking Montreux, the locally-nicknamed ‘Cinderella’s Castle’ hosts an annual series of conferences hosted by CAUX-Initiatives of Change.

An independent officially recognized Swiss foundation, the body works to promote peace, prevent conflicts, build trust and encourage intercultural dialogue and ethical conduct in business. CAUX-Initiatives of Change is a member of Initiatives of Change International, an NGO in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and participatory status at the Council of Europe.

Their summer seminars in Caux draw people from all over the world, in what was until 1946 the grand Caux-Palace Hotel. A magnificent and peaceful setting, but one whose acoustic legacy has proved a major downside for its current use.

British sound designer Terry Nelson, whose Switzerland-based company Studio Equipment was hired to improve speech intelligibility in the main conference area, explains: “The main salon of the hotel, where the conferences are held, has high ceilings and a wonderful cupola in the centre, with pseudo-art deco plasterwork. The effect of all this is almost infinite flutter echoes, and the area under the cupola works like a whispering gallery. It’s basically a very difficult environment to deliver clear speech to up to 450 people.”

To make the acoustics more complex still, the central area and stage are flanked by a glass conservatory-style wing overlooking the gardens to stage right, and a corridor to stage left.

In a classic scenario, he says, “They’d had a PA installed, with perfectly good quality loudspeakers that were unfortunately totally the wrong choice for the highly reflective environment. People despaired about understanding conversations and presentations. They’d also installed an 8-channel multiple translation system, and many people turned to using that system’s headphones in an effort to understand what was being said.”

The conference’s British technical director Brian Thirlaway initially contacted an audio company in Zurich, which in turn recommended Studio Equipment. Says Nelson: “We did a site visit and from the outset it was obvious that we needed a highly directional system to tame the multiple reflections.” Further discussions revealed that while speech would be the primary use, subtle sound reinforcement for small groups or solo instruments was also required.

Nelson recommended Renkus-Heinz Iconyx’s digital beam steering capabilities to direct sound away from the walls and cupola. The main system consists of two IC16-R arrays, controlled by RHAON software over CobraNet via a remote Ethernet port, along with two CF Series subwoofers.

The slim arrays fit perfectly either side of a mock proscenium arch and are run via analogue audio lines from an existing DDA Q Series console, with control via Ethernet from a Renkus-Heinz IC-RC1 RHAON remote preset control that allows simple user switching between preset modes. The console also feeds two Iconyx IC7 arrays (via groups), which cover the conservatory and corridor areas.

Says Nelson: “Having looked at the room, I did an initial set-up with Renkus-Heinz’s BeamWare II beam alignment software. With the rear wall around 30 metres from the stage, I set up the IC16s so that five separate horizontal beams covered the audience area evenly from front to back.”

“One of the best comments we had,” says Nelson, “was that the general secretary of the organisation was very pleased, saying that for the first time you could understand every word without using the interpreter system headphones, even right at the back or under the cupola.

“From our point of view, when we were doing the first commissioning, one of my colleagues stood right under the cupola, where the sound comes at you from all directions.

“It takes a lot to impress him and he said he couldn’t hear a single echo, just some natural room reverb.

“The whole team was there at the time and it was a case of ‘problem solved’. As a final touch, Renkus-Heinz delivered the Iconyx arrays in a finish that precisely matches the white decor.”
