Alcorn McBride Helps Las Vegas’s New Mob Museum Tell Both Sides of the Story

There are two sides to every story, as the tag line for the Mob Museum in Las Vegas reminds us, and Alcorn McBride is helping the city’s newest attraction tell the tales of both organized crime and law enforcement. The Mob Museum is utilizing a full inventory of Alcorn McBride equipment for audio, video and show control throughout its historic 1930′s location, a former federal courthouse and post office.

The museum, which opened in February, showcases the notorious battle between organized crime and law enforcement with high-tech theater presentations, iconic artifacts – including the actual brick wall from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre – and interactive exhibits and environments, including FBI wiretap surveillance and weapons training. The project was designed by Ray Kent, Westlaske Reed Leskosky. AVI-SPL was the primary AV integrator, with programming support by Kevin Ruud. Ryan Markus and Nester Ramos, Mob Museum’s AV/IT staff, handle ongoing maintenance and system programming.

“We have three floors of exhibits, and a large portion is content. Visitors start at the third floor with the birth of the mob and continue down to the first floor, which documents the mob today,” explains Ryan Markus. “There’s so much amazing content: The average leg walk [for visitors] is two hours. Most of our equipment is controlled by Alcorn gear – we have several racks full – and it’s been awesome.”

Five Alcorn McBride V16Pro frame-accurate show controllers for serial and network devices control six Digital Binloop HD’s, which play loops of a diverse range of video content tailored to particular exhibits. One exhibit calls for visitors to pick up a rotary telephone that sends a tone to one of the V16Pros telling it to play a certain audio track. The tone in turn signals an Alcorn McBride AM4 Digital Audio Machine, a professional MP3 and WAV audio player.

A total of 10 AM4s are in use in the museum; some provide playback for phones that give visitors an idea of what ‘mob speak’ sounds like.

Show control via more V16Pros comes into play in a courtroom exhibit featuring a seven-minute, four-projector show. The system opens and closes the courtroom door and rolls up the screen when the show concludes.

A LightCue DMX recorder and four Alcorn McBride DMX Machines control over 1,500 lights in the museum. “Almost all of the lights in the building are controlled with the DMX system,” notes Markus.

The Mob Museum currently uses ShowTouch, Alcorn McBride’s touch panel interface for Alcorn McBride show controllers with Ethernet, for tour guide presentations. But it will begin to deploy the company’s new ShowTouch for iPad, a touch panel interface app for the popular Apple platform. “The private guides and tour operators use iPads, and soon they will be able to use Touch for iPad to pause and restart equipment as they give their presentations,” Markus explains.

Calling the Alcorn McBride gear “awesome” and “rock solid,” he notes that the system “has come back online without any issues after a couple of power outages. It’s really great!”

About Alcorn McBride:
Founded in 1986, Alcorn McBride is the leading manufacturer of show control, audio and video equipment for the themed entertainment industry, and a rapidly growing provider of audio and video systems for retail environments and transportation applications. Media Vision USA Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary during InfoComm; Looking back on a Perfect American Journey to Success.

“It took just about ten years for the industry to know we’ve arrived!” said Fardad Zabetian, Founder and CEO of Media Vision USA, as he announced the 10-year anniversary of the company, “Now that the TAIDEN microphones and interpretation systems have become a reference in the conferencing world, Media Vision is ready to take a great leap forward!”

A tremendous growth pace and key contracts signed in the past years have given Fardad Zabetian all the reasons to speak with such confidence. The defining moment being in late 2011, when Media Vision was awarded the contract to provide all congress microphones and simultaneous interpretation systems for the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Since then, opportunities with both the public and the private sectors have surged.

Media Vision USA celebrated its 10-year anniversary during InfoComm 2012 in Las Vegas. The company was founded in June of 2002 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Following the thriving Silicon Valley spirit, Media Vision’s founding history is filled with the flavors of entrepreneurship, risk-taking, hard work and most of all the dreams of an immigrant making it all happen. In 2002, Fardad was a recent immigrant from Iran who had experienced 8-years of the Iran-Iraq war. America gave him a chance to pursue his dreams; starting a company to enhance communication among political figures, administrators, CEO’s and corporate members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

This all-American story wouldn’t be complete without the collaboration of great partners and team members. The first one to join Media Vision was Wesley Sutliff, now a Product Manager. Later came industry experts Patrick Herlihy, based in Washington DC, and David Dunn based in Toronto. “In the past year only, we have hired four people for technical and customer support,” said Fardad Zabetian “We are doing what it takes to ensure that customers keep on receiving the attention and service they demand. For us, business growth and customer-orientation stick together”.

Through the years, Media Vision was also able to maintain a rich company culture based on excellence, diversity and positive attitude. The same values were applied when, in 2006, Media Vision selected TAIDEN of Shenzhen, China, as their manufacturing partner. “At the time, TAIDEN wasn’t a major player in North America; but they already had excellent solutions, dynamic strategies for innovation, and most of all, a management and engineering team willing to give its all to succeed” said Fardad, “With the recent release of the 8300 Paperless Multimedia Conference System, TAIDEN exceeded all our expectations. We are proud to be working with them!”. As a result of a six-year partnership, with Media Vision’s sales and marketing drive, TAIDEN is now the leading brand for conference systems in the United States and Canada.

With the announcement of Media Vision’s anniversary, an apparent excitement animated the entire team. “We’re celebrating!” said Wesley Sutliff “We’ve worked hard, even more through tough economic times, now we all feel rewarded for a job well done. Still, it’s only the beginning”. Wesley continued by describing how overall, working in the niche market for conference systems gets more and more rewarding every day, as you know your products are serving high-profile public figures and key decision-makers. “We are providing all microphones and interpretation systems for the 2012 G-20 Mexico Summit this month. So we are all hoping, as an anniversary gift, to see the TAIDEN mics used by the President of the United States!”

Fardad Zabetian concluded his announcement with a note of thanks towards the Media Vision team, our reps and partners, as well as the ever-extending network of dealers and consultants throughout North America. “ I have special thoughts for all of those who believed in the company from the start, we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Pixine Relies On Anton/Bauer CINE VCLX Batteries to Power Through Productions in Extreme Environments

HyTRON 140 and DIONIC HC Complete High-Performance Package

SANTIAGO, CHILE, JUNE 18, 2012—For the last 12 years, film and digital cinema camera rental company Pixine has relied on power solutions from Anton/Bauer®, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a premier global provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries. When the company saw an increasing number of clients shooting with the ARRI ALEXA, it turned to Anton/Bauer’s CINE VCLX battery to help match the camera’s power demands and hold up to the tough environmental situations its users face around the world.

Known for providing equipment and support for production companies, Pixine works with both national and foreign clientele filming television commercials, corporate videos and feature films. When Pixine needed a battery that could match the ALEXA’s power demands and support long hours of filming in such extreme climates as the deserts and rainforests of Chile, Anton/Bauer’s CINE VCLX provided the optimal solution. With its 560 watts of power, two 14.4V outputs and one 28V output, the CINE VCLX from Anton/Bauer offered maximum battery performance paired with superior reliability for Pixine’s clients.

“The CINE VCLX has been a pleasure to work with,” says Rodrigo Lizana, owner and head of technology at Pixine. “I don’t have to think about batteries anymore, which is a big help when filming in extreme weather conditions. We have been shooting by the sea, in the mountains and the driest desert in the world, here in Chile. This is a very tough job and our equipment has to deal with it on a regular basis. So, for me, the best technology is the one that goes unnoticed—it’s the technology that lets you work without worrying about it.”

Pixine recently collaborated with a client that was using the ALEXA on an eight-day project, with production lasting 15 hours each day. With the CINE VCLX, the client was able to power the camera for about five hours at a time, using only two batteries per day, as opposed to needing six when it was using 24V batteries previously. Known for providing extended run-times for some of the most popular film and digital cinema cameras, including ARRI, RED, Sony and Panavision, CINE VCLX batteries provide all the safety and high power-draw performance of Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) cell chemistry technology in a power package specifically designed for the integration of 24V film and 14V video equipment. The high-power 28V output is also capable of powering 200-w HMI lights, lighting panels and portable microwave units. The CINE VCLX batteries feature a RealTime® LCD that accurately displays remaining run-time and a visual LED warning indicator when 15 minutes of run-time remain.

Pixine also utilized Anton/Bauer’s HyTRON 140 when the crew needed to switch to a handheld camera, and powered the field monitors and the KI PRO recorder with DIONIC® HCs. The HyTRON 140 is a high-power NiMH battery system suited to the power demands of today’s high-definition equipment and on-camera lighting systems. In lower-power applications, it can provide power for many hours without limits or travel restrictions. The HyTRON 140 also offers an excellent counterbalance to offset the weight of a lens.

DIONIC HC provides 91Wh and can operate a 40-watt HD camera for more than two hours. Transported as carry-on luggage without restrictions, the DIONIC HC is the perfect lightweight battery for shooting on location. Part of the company’s Logic Series® batteries, the DIONIC HC is suitable for powering high-current applications in a lightweight package. Working closely with cell manufacturers, the HC series incorporates high-capacity cells offering 10 amps. To continually ensure cell protection and performance integrity, a special honeycomb cell pack design protects the cells. An enhanced RealTime® display indicates up to nine hours of run-time (under low power-load conditions) using a seven-segment display enclosed by four circular arcs that indicate 15-minute time intervals, ensuring high confidence in those filming with the battery. The three-battery combination for one camera proved to be a smart solution for the project.

Another recent project found Pixine turning to the CINE VCLX once again. Pixine was working on a television spot for a mobile phone company in Europe. The company wanted to have two lighting units and one camera unit so that by the time the camera unit and the first lighting unit were filming at location A, the second lighting unit would be preparing the set for location B. This meant that the camera unit needed to work through 24 hours on the first and third days, a difficult task.

“This project would have been impossible without the three CINE VCLX batteries we used,” says Lizana. “The batteries lasted five hours and took only seven hours to be recharged and back to work. We never had to use a power supply, wait for batteries to charge or ask for more blocks. In this business you have to be perfect or as close to perfect as possible. Your clients put a lot of time and effort into one day of shooting. If the equipment is not up to the task at hand, people lose time and money and you lose credibility. There’s no point in having the best equipment if you won’t have the power at hand to turn it on.”

Throughout this century and the last, The Roosevelt has strived to provide world leaders, business executives and entertainment icons with an unrivaled meetings and events service. Twenty-three separate and unique meeting rooms and 3 grand ballrooms comprise the hotel’s 5574m_/60 000 sq. ft. of event space offering a wealth of venue options.

“This project was a challenge with a tight deadline,” remarked Garth Gilmour, IMT’s VP Professional Services. “When the Waldorf contacted us, they expressed concern about the supposedly solid Wi-Fi system they had installed.  IMT had already gone through the Hilton standardization process, so we visited the New Orleans location, created a new design for them and were given the green light to proceed.”

Gilmour and the IMT team chose to develop the solution with the new Meraki MR14 dual-radio 802.11n access point series.  “Meraki is leading the pack today because they have realtime tools that are built in,” continued Gilmour.  “We’ve enhanced and integrated those tools through third party interfaces, allowing us to do  a fast and dynamic analysis of the hotel environment.  Just a year ago, that would have required a $25,000 analyzer and a team of technicians working for weeks.”

“We just didn’t have the luxury of time and another giant budget to fix this,” added Fred Sidhva.  “We gave IMT a very small window to work in — just two nights when the conference rooms were vacant between midnight and 3 AM.  We needed a product that could be deployed very effectively, very efficiently, and very quickly.  IMT hit the ground running and got the job done right, the first time.”

An effective wireless deployment requires universal coverage throughout the hotel meeting spaces.  An efficient deployment is like a military rescue: get in and get out.  Gilmour concluded,”We’ve found that with Meraki, the installation time is cut by 40%.  We have to guarantee that everything is working perfectly, but we also have to thoroughly train the hotel IT staff so that they have got everything covered when we leave.”
