French Broadcast Leader TF1 Chooses Chyron for Branding of LCI News Channel

LONDON — July 11, 2012 — France’s number one broadcaster, TF1, has installed Chyron’s Ticker Tool — a solution driven by Chyron’s Channel Box² graphics branding and promo technology — to provide channel branding for LCI, the network’s popular 24-hour news channel. At LCI, the newly developed Ticker Tool drives creation of all channel brand elements including clock, logos, and tickers for weather, stocks, and news headlines.

“We needed a significant upgrade to our graphics presentations in order to stay competitive in our market,” said Olivier Tremon, head of internal production at TF1. “The Chyron solution has proven to be an excellent choice at LCI, providing state-of-the-art channel branding and animation capabilities as well as up-to-the-minute ticker information that our operators can easily manage and modify.”

The Chyron Ticker Tool offers a user-friendly interface for LCI to generate tickers and populate them with rolling content from third-party data sources for weather, stock prices, sports results, and other current and rapidly changing information. For stories automatically built and updated from external data sources, such as stock market data, the Ticker Tool provides spellchecking, cut-and-paste from third-party applications, and the ability to edit stories and modify layouts in a word-processing environment. Bin-and-sequence windows enable operators to build and reorder sequences simply by dragging and dropping them from the bin, a time-saving capability especially useful when inserting breaking news information.

“TF1 is a household name in France and one of the most influential broadcasters in Europe, so we were honored when the network chose Chyron to provide channel branding for the popular LCI news channel,” said Paul Glasgow, vice president of EMEA sales at Chyron.

Chyron dealer MagicHour provided support for the implementation of the Ticker Tool and Channel Box² solution installed in the main TF1 broadcasting facility in Paris.

Crowne Centre Auditorium At Pensacola Christian College Upgrades With HARMAN’s Studer Consoles and BSS Audio Processors

PENSACOLA, Florida – Florida’s Pensacola Christian College recently received a major audio upgrade to its 6,200-seat Crowne Centre auditorium with two HARMAN Studer Vista 9(tm) digital audio consoles, nine BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-160 signal processors and five BLU-BIB break-in boxes. Architecturally striking with its tall, jewel-like faceted glass front sections and ultramodern curved interior featuring a 110-foot rotating stage and dual wedding chapels, the Crowne Centre is used for services, concerts, weddings and special events.

The Crowne Centre was built in 2001 but the sound system recently began showing its age. The auditorium is used almost daily, and while it proved very reliable overall, after 11 years of constant use the mixing console and other components began to exhibit failures and glitches. Commercial audio contractor All Pro Sound was chosen to bring the audio system back to the high-quality standards required by the college.

“We didn’t just want this to be a glorified repair job-we wanted the system to be more powerful and user-friendly, to be future-proof and to provide many years of reliable service,” said John Fuqua, Vice President, All Pro Sound. “We have worked with Pensacola Christian College for over 25 years and have a great understanding of their expectations for quality and function. As the original system designer and installer, All Pro Sound was able to provide a comprehensive plan that met both function and timeline.”

“The Studer Vista 9 is a significant upgrade from the previous console,” Fuqua stated. “We chose it for its large input and output capability, its flexible configurability and its superior sonic quality.”

The Crowne Centre uses two Vista 9 consoles for front of house and in the broadcast suite. Both have 42-fader mixing surfaces and are running a total of 212 inputs with 32 main outs, 48 matrix sends and 32 aux sends. The broadcast console is programmed for dynamic automation, which is required for remixing the musical portions of the church services and concert events.

“The Studer Vista 9 fits this installation perfectly,” Fuqua continued. “We needed consoles that could handle both live sound and broadcast mixing needs, and the Vista 9 is versatile enough to be optimized for both applications. It makes life much easier to have the same brand and model of console, especially since both are networked together.”

The inter-compatibility of the two consoles and the BSS Audio Soundweb London components was an especially crucial-and practical-aspect considering the time frame Fuqua was under. “We had a 3-week window to remove the old gear, change all the system programming, pull all-new fiber optic cable between locations and take delivery of, install and program a large Studer mixing system. We started the process with Studer engineers in early March for the install date to begin on May 25, so we could be completed by June 15. This was, at best, very tight for the Studer system to be built, tested and shipped to the site. We took delivery of the first Vista 9 on June 1 and the second on June 4.”

“The fact that the Studer and BSS Audio components are literally made for each other was a tremendous advantage in ensuring we did not go over deadline,” Fuqua added. “The system uses HiQnet(tm) London Architect programming interface and its drag-and-drop functionality really sped up the configuration process. Our lead systems designer Dennis Ryan created a custom GUI that allows for complete function control and monitoring for all types of events held in the Crowne Centre. The wide variety of signal processing options provided by the Soundweb London BLU-160 enabled us to precisely optimize the sound and performance of the system.”

“The Crowne Centre staff is extremely pleased with the sound quality and more intuitive user interface of the Vista 9 and the capabilities of the entire system,” Fuqua concluded. “The sound quality of the new BSS Audio Soundweb London components coupled with the Vista 9 consoles was evident from the first sound checks.”

Take1 and InfoComm Team Up To Help Member Companies Protect Against Theft And Insurance Fraud In Special August 8, 2012 Webinar

Underscoring the growing threat that theft and insurance fraud poses to its member companies, InfoComm International®, the leading non-profit association serving the worldwide professional communications industry, is teaming up with its only endorsed insurance provider, Take1 Insurance, to host a special webinar on August 8, 2012 at 1 p.m. EST.

According to Scott Carroll, Executive Vice President of Take1 Insurance, the webinar entitled “Trust but Verify” will carefully examine a real-world 2011 Take1 insurance claim in which a film equipment rental company took every precaution with a new client and still had $255,000 worth of equipment stolen.

The webinar will explore the extensive actions this company took to protect themselves and how the highly sophisticated deception against them unfolded. Carroll will explore why equipment rental providers should consider taking some of these same precautions even though, in this case, they weren’t enough to prevent the theft.

In January 2011, the Miami, Florida based rental company, HD House, had $255,000 of high-end video production equipment stolen by a new customer who they thoroughly vetted. HD House was understandably shocked when they learned that this customer had stolen the identity of a reputable UK film producer, going so far as producing false identification and taking out a real insurance policy in order to commit fraud. Because the client bought his own insurance with the intent to commit fraud, it didn’t cover the theft.

Luckily for HD House they had signed on with Take1 just 90 days before the theft, and within hours of submitting their claim the wheels were turning on what ended up being a full payment of $255,000. HD House’s previous insurance provider would only have been obligated to pay $140,000 of the loss, and may have even tried to deny it completely.

“This kind of fraud happens more than people like to think,” Carroll emphasized today, “and InfoComm takes this issue very seriously on behalf of its membership. This InfoComm webinar will provide business owners with advice and insight on how to protect against fraud and equipment theft by sophisticated thieves who use forged documents and can even impersonate foreign businesses. Take1 and InfoComm want to make sure that every business has the tools and knowledge required to recognize suspicious clients and prevent theft or fraud before it happens.”

Clay Paky Sharpys Join Motley Crue Tour

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are hitting the road with the North American summer tour of iconic rock band Motley Crue, which is co-headlining tour dates across the country with KISS. A complement of approximately 90 Sharpys have joined the Motley Crue /KISS lighting inventory.

“I first saw Sharpys at the Ultra Music Fest almost two years ago,” says lighting director Mike Cooper. “The lighting designer had a huge Clay Paky rig and a row of Sharpys on the stage, and I was blown away. I thought I had to use them.”

Since then Cooper has deployed Sharpys on the Godsmack/Staind tour and Motley Crue appearances in Europe. “I love them: Their speed is awesome, and they can cut through anything,” he reports. “We have a full rig of 1500-watt lights, but the Sharpys just cut through everything.”

Lighting and production designer Sooner Routhier and Robert Long call Sharpy “an amazing light that’s perfect for rock ‘n roll. we’ve used them at some festivals and have been specking them for tours. We love the sharp beams, brightness, speed and great lensing – Clay Paky has always had amazing lensing.”

On the Motley Crue tour Routhier and business partner, Robert Long use Sharpys on the floor and surrounding the band’s Tommy (Roller) Coaster in a 360 for “cool circular effects.” Cooper notes that “the Sharpys are able to handle the vibration” of the roller coaster with no ill effects.

They also like to “see Sharpys in groups of three or four or a straight line where we have loads of them — they give a jail-bar look.”

The robust fixtures have been “working awesome,” she says. “We’ve never had any problems with them.”

A.C.T Lighting is the distributor for Clay Paky in North America.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “Rock and Roll tours are really where the Sharpys excel. It’s great to see them on so many tours this summer and we’re proud to have them on Motley Crue.”

San Diego, California — July 11, 2012 — DVEO, the broadcast division of Computer Modules, Inc. (CMI), is now shipping the latest versions of their portable real time video converters. The new “Spigot” converters will be showcased at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, September 7-11, at Stand 2.A54.

The HD Spigot product family consists of three converters — HDMI to SDI or HD-SDI, SDI or HD-SDI to HDMI, and, new for 2012, Analog to SDI or HD-SDI. The small handheld systems enable broadcasters, content providers, and A/V systems integrators to interface new low cost HDMI devices to professional HD-SDI equipment, or vice-versa. And with the new analog to SDI/HD-SDI converter, professionals can convert analog video to standard or high definition.

The new HD Spigots feature dual outputs. They are fully compatible with SMPTE-259M and SMPTE 292M. Supported resolutions include 1080p, 1080i, 1035i, or 720p HD. The systems work with any device.

“DVEO invented this type of product in 2007,” commented Scott Grizzle, Product Manager for DVEO. “We are happy to announce that our newest versions are available at a lower price point. The HD Spigots continue to save a bundle of money for our customers, since they can use inexpensive HDMI or analog devices. The systems let broadcasters use small portable HDMI cameras for remote shoots, sports broadcasts, and electronic news gathering. And corporations and systems integrators use the HD Spigots to show HDMI or analog footage on HD-SDI monitors.”

The HD Spigots also feature an Integrated Audio Embedder. Up to eight channels of 48 kHz audio are embedded into the output, allowing a convenient single cable audio/video connection.
