Firehouse Productions Uses HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series Loudspeakers For High-Quality, Visually Discreet Monitor Use on Survivor and Celebrity Apprentice

NORTHRIDGE, California – Looking to provide contestants with professional-quality monitor coverage while maintaining a low visual profile on the sets of CBS’ Survivor and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice reality television programs, Red Hook, New York-based Firehouse Productions relies on HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series column speakers.

Both television programs needed a loudspeaker option that could provide tight vertical coverage patterns while being easily hidden amongst the design of their sets. To do so, Firehouse Productions provided JBL’s CBT 50LA-a compact, 50-centimeter-high column that utilizes a straight line of eight 2-inch drivers.

Dan Gerhard, mixer for both shows, stated, “The CBT 50LA is perfect for a set where unobtrusive monitoring of dialogue is required.” Gerhard was able to keep the speakers visually unobtrusive on both sets by attaching them to the palm trees on the set of Survivor, and attaching them to a vertical window frame on Celebrity Apprentice. At just three inches wide by 21 inches high, they provided the perfect low-profile solution with plenty of power.

“The tightly controlled pattern is ideal in reducing unwanted reflections from nearby scenery, but also throws intelligibility for some distance,” Gerhard added. “By placing the columns at head level, the speakers project the high-quality sound that we were looking for.”

“Other solutions do not have the pattern control that the CBT’s do,” said Mark Dittmar, Lead Design and Integration Engineer at Firehouse Productions. “They also help with feedback and eliminate any problems we’ve had in the past. It really is a spectacular solution and a unique way to use the CBT’s.”

Being used even with a lapel microphone, “there is concise phase coherence at low levels, making them perfect for television studio purposes,” Gerhard added.

“It’s great that the CBT’s can be used for this application and really shows their versatility and ability to provide direct, accurate and high-quality sound,” Dittmar added.

UK-Based Theater Sound Designer Richard Brooker Relies On Waves Audio

— For the new musicals I Dreamed a Dream (based on the life of Susan Boyle) and an adaptation of The Bodyguard, Waves tools play an important role in Brooker’s sound design —

KNOXVILLE, TN, July 5, 2012 — Richard Brooker has a long history as an acclaimed sound designer on some of the industry’s biggest theatrical performances, including such credits as Jesus Christ Superstar, Never Forget, The Sound of Music, Cabaret, Chess, Daddy Cool and many more. He has witnessed his job evolve as audience expectations and the theaters themselves have changed, and recently he has come to rely on tools from Waves Audio, the industry-leading developer of professional audio digital signal processing technologies, for both live situations and his personal studio. His use of Waves features prominently in the sound design for the new stage musical I Dreamed a Dream (based on the real-life story of opera crossover superstar Susan Boyle) and the upcoming The Bodyguard (an adaptation of the award-winning Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner film). For I Dreamed a Dream, Brooker’s console of choice is a DiGiCo SD8 powered by the fully-integrated Waves SoundGrid® platform for real-time processing; for The Bodyguard, he is using a DiGiCo SD7 with SoundGrid.

“I began working with Waves tools at home in the studio on my Pro Tools rig,” notes Brooker. “I love them, and they are always a part of building my mix. They are unbelievably well-thought-through products, with something available for whatever you want to do. And of course they are great sounding plugins too, which is probably the most important issue.”

Brooker reflects on the difference between using Waves for theater versus a rock performance, as well as the shifting dynamics of the audience’s relationship to a show: “In theater, the sound design should support the storyline, the emotional journey of the characters and the score itself. We must draw the audience in during the dialogue, in order that they can commit to the show emotionally. And we have to push them back into their seats and overwhelm them in the big numbers. Traditionally, sound designers have taken a ‘less-is-more’ approach in musical theater. That is still partially the case, but we have seen the role of the sound designer evolve moving into the current era. Audiences today tend to be a bit more demanding of things like a fully-produced sound, a surround-sound layout and special effects. It is a challenge, but Waves tools have helped me make those transitions. As intense as it can be, I love my job and it’s tremendous fun. The addition of Waves to live consoles is like opening up an Aladdin’s cave for me.”

Brooker’s favorite Waves plugins include the Renaissance Compressor, Renaissance Reverb, Bass Rider, SSL G-Equalizer and SSL G-Master Buss Compressor. He also uses the CLA (Chris Lord-Alge) Artist Signature Collection in his recording studio. He is also fond of the IR1 Parametric Convolution Reverb, as well as the One Knob Phatter and One Knob Wetter. His go-to “problem-solver” is the Renaissance Compressor. “It is transparent even when working really hard,” he notes.

The new Susan Boyle musical has presented some unique challenges, as Brooker points out. “This is a tricky show. There is a range of intensity. All of the show is amplified using lavalier microphones and wireless transmitters, with miniature DPA mics hidden in the actors’ hair or wigs. After the show is done, we present them with a full-on concert-style, epic set of numbers. Susan will personally make an appearance at some, singing into a handheld unit. That portion is really a great big sound, so we need to be set up for a range of dynamics. The Renaissance Compressor is perfect to place Susan just where she needs to be in the mix. To the audience, it is imperceptible, but they would certainly notice if it weren’t there. Then, the band sound is shaped by the Renaissance Reverb and SSL Buss Compressor, with a little bit of the SSL G-Equalizer for good measure. I am a DiGiCo man through and through, currently using the SD8 and SD7, and the Waves plugins enhance what is already an amazing sounding console. DiGiCo and Waves are the perfect combination.”

Clare Controls Selected as Home Automation System Provider for Street of Dreams Home

Clare Controls, a provider of configurable and intuitive automated systems for residential and commercial applications, is proud to announce its flagship product, ClareHome, has been selected by Avalanche Electric as the home automation system for its Street of Dreams luxury home.

The Street of Dreams is the most popular luxury lifestyle and housing showcase in North America, allowing guests to get up close and personal with the very latest home furnishings, design features and cutting-edge new products in a collection of homes.

Canterra Custom Homes, a Canadian builder, took part in the Spring, 2012 Street of Dreams, located in Calgary at Willow Creek at Bearspaw. Supporting Canterra Custom Homes, Avalanche Electric stepped in to handle the electrical work and the set up of the audio/video equipment, including the automation system and the home theater.

When it came time to choose a home automation system for the house, Kent Mountenay, president of Avalanche Electric, chose Clare Controls’ ClareHome, the first home automation system managed from the cloud and run on a Mac. Striving to go beyond the new set of usability expectations that have emerged in the last few years, ClareHome redefines and simplifies the user experience through features like its fully customizable user interface.

“We wanted a system that was less complicated and easier to use for the consumer,” Mountenay said. “That was the biggest factor we were looking for.”

In addition to its simplicity for the user, ClareHome proved to be a system that could be easily installed by any integrator.

“Our lead tech had no experience with ClareHome whatsoever beforehand,” said Mountenay. “He hadn’t even seen a demo of it, but, even with no prior experience, it was very simple to install. The customer service with Clare Controls has been great. Any problems he had, they helped him with immediately. To have my tech, who’s never even held a piece of that technology, install it so easily… We’ve been very impressed.”

Mountenay wants to continue to implement ClareHome in the houses his team works on and plans to use it very soon in another project with custom builder Karoleena Homes.

Prism Sound Delivers Simpler Audio Measurement Solutions To All India Radio

All India Radio (AIR) has taken delivery of 35 Prism Sound dScope Series III audio test instruments, which are being used to check the audio quality of AIR’s transmitter links throughout the country.

With a national network of 237 broadcasting centres, AIR is one of the most influential radio broadcasters in India. Established in 1936 as a Government organisation with a remit to inform, educate and entertain, AIR underwent rapid expansion after India attained independence in 1947 and now reaches 99.18% of the population. Its home service broadcasts in 24 languages and 146 dialects, while its external service covers 27 languages – 17 national and 10 foreign.

Today, the broadcaster has 149 medium frequency and 54 high frequency transmitters, along with 177 FM transmitters. This extensive network is constantly checked to ensure audio quality and overall performance.

In order to win this important tender, Prism Sound worked closely with New Delhi-based Electro Dynamics, the company’s specialist agent for Government sector Test and Measurement business in India. Formerly an Audio Precision representative, Electro Dynamics has been supplying equipment to AIR and Doordarshan (TV) for many years.

Lalit Agarwal, founder and CEO of Electro Dynamics, says: “Alongside offering the most competitive financial package in its tender response, Prism Sound also offered the best technical solution. The dScope Series III instrument was deemed highly suitable for AIR’s requirements, particularly because it offers analogue and digital functionality and its ease of operation is second to none. The system will be used extensively during the overhaul of AIR’s infrastructure as it transitions to digital broadcasting, and we are delighted to be able to offer this state-of-the art solution at this key stage in AIR’s development.”

Prism Sound’s dScope Series III includes precision analogue and highly-optimised digital outputs and inputs. Precise and automatic gain-ranging enables high resolution measurements over a massive range, from a few micro-volts to more than 150 volts RMS, and from less than 1 Hz to over 90kHz. Its interface processor uses dedicated DSP to provide a wide range of real time measurements, while its software uses the host PC for almost unlimited number crunching and analysis options such as Fast Fourier Transforms, unique ‘FFT Detectors’, swept sine and multi-tone testing. Designed to be highly programmable, the dScope Series III can be automated from a wide range of third-party software using Active X controls, or internally using VBScript. The system also offers a range of uniquely powerful tools for broadcasters, including logging facilities for tracking down intermittent pops and glitches in the audio stream, and metadata inconsistencies and changes of status which could lead to audible problems.

Simon Woollard, Test and Measurement Product Specialist for Prism Sound, says: “This was an important project for Prism Sound and for AIR alike, so we took the time to consult with the client in order to understand their requirements in detail. Once we knew what measurements AIR’s engineers needed, we were able to customise the appearance of the standard dScope Series III interface, using in-built user-adjustable settings. In doing so, we were able to provide a simplified menu that was easy to understand and control, even for untrained users.

“The resulting main menu offers four main sub-menus of test groups, grouped by input and output domain, plus a quick tour of the instrument and the self-test routine that AIR requested. The sub-menus then offer the operator a choice of the most commonly needed tests, e.g. frequency response, THD+N, IMD, etc, which can all be accessed from a single click. Operators can then perform their tests using the standard test profiles, or they can customise the tests according to their specific requirements.

“As with all dScope Series III instruments, automated test sequencing and reporting is also possible. We will be consulting further with AIR following their initial training and usage of the instrument to determine whether they require any further adjustments to the appearance of the instrument’s interface, or to the tests and test reporting defaults provided.

“This project is very exciting for me, as I have been involved in Prism Sound’s strategic move into the Indian market since day one, and this is one of the most significant results we have obtained since we started this campaign. This news is important for all of our customers, as it helps to strengthen our position in the region, and I look forward to working with Electro Dynamics and AIR in future as we continue to develop our audio test and measurement solutions.”

Prism Sound has already provided Digital Audio training to AIR staff and will deliver more specific dScope Series III product training during 2012. It is anticipated that AIR will place further orders in the future as it rolls dScope Series III out to other divisions.
