DK-Technologies Unveils The DK3 Meter To European Broadcasters At IBC 2012

DK-Technologies is now offering broadcast engineers the ability to de-embed 16 channels of audio from an SDI input by using its award-winning DK3 Compact Audio Loudness Meter. And for those working in a non-video equipped facility, there is still the option of using the meter’s three AES inputs.

DK-Technologies has also made its successful StarFish™ surround sound display available to all DK meter users, as well as those investing in the new DK3, which makes its European debut at IBC 2012 (Hall 8, Stand E60).

Richard Kelley, Sales and Marketing Director for DK-Technologies, says: “The introduction of the DK3 meter has made the Award-winning DK Meter range even more versatile. Broadcast engineers can now monitor audio levels from both video and audio sources. This is in line with industry trends that have seen audio and video being combined more frequently.”

In common with the other meters in DK-Technologies range, the DK3 is compliant with all known loudness recommendations and has pre-sets built in to allow for EBU R128, BCAP, ATSC A/85, ARIB, ABC, AGCOM 219 & ITU 1770-2. Alongside StarFish™, new software features include moving coil emulation of PPM and VU mechanical meters with user selectable scales and a goniometer display for stereo audio. These features are also available to DK1 and DK2 users and can be installed via a free software download from DK-Technologies’ website:
www.dk-technologies.com

Since their launch in 2011, DK Meters have been rapidly adopted by broadcast and post production companies because they meet industry demand for cost-effective stereo and 5.1 metering, including loudness. No bigger than a smart phone, all of the meters in the range are easy to install and can be powered from a computer USB port, making them ideal for location recording. They are supplied with standard DK-Technologies meter scales plus the industry-standard StarFish™ and deliver conventional metering as well as loudness metering at the same time, on the same display and in a single box. Pricing for these products is highly competitive – starting at just $1499.00 in the US and €995.00 in Europe.

DK-Technologies will complete its IBC line up with its full range of audio and video solutions including the PT0700 Series multi-channel waveform monitor, which delivers remote access, logging, Dolby decoding, audio delay, video measurements and loudspeaker level control, making this a high-grade cost effective quality control device that provides in-depth analysis with simple pre-set control. DK-Technologies will also show its industry standard SPG with auto changeover, which now has GPS and SNTP options.

If you would like a demonstration or more information about any of these products, please visit DK-Technologies in Hall 8, Stand E60.

The Norwegian Television School Relies on DPA 4060 Miniature Microphones

The Norwegian Television School has replaced its existing stock of miniature microphones with 20 DPA 4060 omnidirectional miniature microphones, which were chosen for their ruggedness and reliability.

Supplied by DPA’s Norwegian distributor Lyd-Systemer AS, the new microphones are being used with Senheisser wireless systems, including eight channels of stationary wireless receivers for multi camera applications. Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theatre, television and close-miked instrument applications, DPA’s 4060 miniature microphones are exceedingly accurate and highly unobtrusive.

Erik Sutterud, Technical Supervisor at the Television School, says: “Every time we purchase new equipment we research the market to look for the best products. A manufacturer that specialized in one type of product is likely to put more effort into its equipment than a company making a wide variety of products. This was the reason why we chose DPA. We also based our choice on our our previous good experiences with the company – we already own a number of DPA microphones that are among the finest in our collection. If a manufacturer’s equipment has proved to be reliable, it makes sense to go with the same manufacturer again.”

Based at the University College of Lillehammer, the Norwegian Television School offers BA and MA degrees in Documentary Film Making and Multi Camera Production. Students are using the new DPA microphones for guest talk shows and to record characters taking part in documentary films. As both the students and the people they are filming are often inexperienced with microphone technology, it was imperative that the chosen system was hard wearing enough to withstand heavy use.

“All students need to make a mistake or two before they master the equipment and learn to handle it properly,” Erik Sutterud says. “With this in mind, we need to be sure that any equipment we buy is tough enough to withstand student use. The DPA 4060 microphones are ideal because the sound quality is great and the connectors are smaller, more rugged and more flexible and therefore less likely to suffer if they get bent or knocked during operation.”

The Norwegian Television School is renowned for its exceptional results with graduates going straight into film production in all major television companies. They also represent a major part of the country’s freelance film making community.

An audio engineer and Pro Tools expert in his own right, Erik Sutterud has been with the Norwegian Television School since 2006. As well as looking after the facility’s audio equipment, he also lectures in analogue and digital audio and post production techniques.

“DPA Microphones – and previously Bruel & Kjær – have delivered excellent products for decades. Among our collection of microphones we are proud to own four 4006 microphones with sequential serial numbers and two 4011 microphones. These are about thirty years old and following their last service at DPA they are now in ‘as new’ condition. Over their lifetimes they have captured some great recordings and are among our best investments.”

Dual Meyer Sound Systems Renewed at Lebanon’s Casino du Liban

When Lebanon’s Casino du Liban celebrated its grand re-reopening back in 1996, the opulent gaming resort entertained visiting jet-setters in two completely remodeled venues—both featuring Meyer Sound technology. Between 2009 and earlier this year, another technical upgrade project equipped the 1,200-capacity Théâtre du Liban with Meyer Sound MICA line array loudspeakers and furnished the cabaret-style 600-seat Salle des Ambassadeurs with new M’elodie line array loudspeakers.

“After hundreds of successful shows, I had no thoughts of replacing the old systems with anything other than Meyer,” says Tony Khoury, who has been head audio engineer at Casino du Liban since 1996. “I wanted newer technology but with the same natural sound quality and amazing reliability. In 16 years, I had zero loudspeaker failures. That made me a Meyer Sound believer.”

Both systems were designed by Khoury, in consultation with Meyer Sound Design Services, using the MAPP Online Pro acoustical prediction program. For the two-level Théâtre du Liban, Khoury plotted a configuration with seven-per-side MICA line arrays each flown under a 600-HP subwoofer, with additional deep bass from dual ground-stacked 700-HP subwoofers. Four M1D line array loudspeakers and five UPM-1P loudspeakers supply front fill and balcony delay respectively, with everything tied together by a Galileo loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 616 processor.

In Salle des Ambassadeurs, the newer of the two rigs deploys seven-per-side M’elodie line array loudspeakers along with twin UPQ-2 loudspeakers as a center cluster, four UPJunior VariO loudspeakers for left and right side fill, 10 M1D loudspeakers for underbalcony fill, two 700-HP subwoofers, and a Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor. This system was provided and installed by Beirut-based Prolites in early 2012.

“The new line arrays have given me much more headroom, and even better uniformity of levels and imaging throughout the rooms,” states Khoury. “Since we completed the installation at Salle des Ambassadeurs, we’ve had seven concerts and all the bands were surprised by the punch of the system and the clarity of instrumental sounds.”

The prior Meyer Sound systems utilized a variety of legacy loudspeakers, including UPA-1C, MSL-2A, USW-1, and 650-R subwoofers. Both rooms are still making good use of the existing stage monitoring systems, with each comprising legacy USM-1 non-powered monitors and MTS-4A self-powered loudspeakers for side fill. The upgrade program also furnished three new Midas PRO6 consoles: one at each FOH mix and one at monitor in Salle des Ambassadeurs.

Perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean about 20 miles from Beirut, Casino du Liban originally opened in 1959. Thirty years later, beleaguered by years of factional strife in Lebanon, the casino was forced to close. After a $50 million complete reconstruction, the elegant resort reopened in 1996.

Vista Spyder X20 Turns Vision Into Reality In The Owner’s Box At Omni Dallas Hotel

Two Vista Spyder X20-0808 video processors are adding visual punch to the sporting events broadcast at The Owner’s Box, the sports bar located in the new Omni Dallas Hotel. A sports lover’s dream with patio dining and oversized seating areas, The Owner’s Box lets patrons feel the luxury and excitement of being a team owner in a sports-mad city that includes the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and the 2011 NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

Walker Engineering, Inc. of Irving, Texas, collaborated with the City of Dallas, Matthews Southwest Developers and Omni Hotels on the project.

A glass floor displays newspaper clippings of the Dallas sports scene with a ‘jumble wall’ comprising 13 Panasonic full HD displays presenting dynamic visual content in a random, patchwork-style pattern.

“Each of the 13 displays operates independently or all of them can work in tandem so one game image fills the entire wall through the push of a button or as part of a timed sequence,” said Kip Kendrick, business development and manager of AVL systems for Walker Engineering. “Content is refreshed constantly and we can even brand the wall with vendor or corporate visitor logos: The Omni Dallas Hotel logo ‘pops off’ the wall during transitions and the ESPN Radio logo is haloed onto the wall when the network sets up live broadcasts from the bar.”

The jumble wall is fed content from a Blu-ray player, DirecTV, Apple and Windows computers, and a media server via a Crestron Digital Media switcher. By attaching two linked Spyders to the Digital Media switcher’s inputs and outputs, “the power of the Spyder is harnessed anywhere in the bar they see fit,” Kendrick added.

For example, there are five large-format projection screens above the stunning 60-foot ice bar. “We take advantage of the power of Spyder to show college and pro games on those displays. With the push of a button, the bartender can change the performance mode from unaltered video content to a wave effect – heightening fan excitement.”

Kendrick has used Spyder for worship market installations and live staging and chose Spyder for its stability and ability to pixel map and manipulate high-definition content across 13 screens spread apart. He said the 18-foot by 13-foot jumble wall defies the current trend toward “zero mullions” and, instead, assembles its 13 displays with varying and substantial distances among them.

“We imported a CAD dimensional drawing to Spyder, and it’s incredible how it takes 1920 by 1080 images and maps them across 13 screens with zero degradation to the video,” Kendrick continued. “We ran a Discovery Channel Space Shuttle documentary in full-screen mode in the entire bar – the rocket blast off was so cool to see! It’s also fun watching hockey and NASCAR moving from screen to screen.”

Kendrick praised Vista’s “support and commitment,” provided by Ryan Strope. “Ryan was there during the hotel’s opening day to certify that everything was fully operational. We’re very thankful that Vista captured our vision and made it a reality.”

Jerry Roskin of Walker Engineering was the lead project manager. Eric Dell and Troy Morgan at PanTech Design programmed Crestron touch panels for Spyder control – creating a GUI display of the 13 jumble wall screens and Spyder’s display options.

A Meyer surround sound system provides seven audio zones for patrons to listen to games or enjoy background music.
