Entrusts Christie’s Powerful Digital Cinema Projectors With Over 600 Screenings.

Christie, a world leader in advanced cinema technologies, today announced its continued sponsorship of the Toronto International Film Festival by providing multiple Christie Solaria Series digital cinema projectors.

Recognized around the world for presenting the best of international and Canadian cinema to film lovers, the Festival screens more than 300 films from 60+ countries during its 11-day program September 6-16, in addition to offering year-long programming. This year represents Christie’s 12th year as the official projection sponsor, supporting The Festival’s mission of transforming the way people see the world through film. In 2011, The Festival selected Christie’s industry-leading Christie Solaria 4K DLP Cinema projector for screening filmmakers’ Ron Fricke’s and Mark Magidson’s 70mm movie Samsara –marking the first 4K screening at The Festival, while Francis Ford Coppola’s movie Twixt was shown in 3D on a Christie CP2230 4K-ready DLP Cinema projector.

“The explosion of digital cinema technology has provided the industry with accessibility while meeting the rising demand of filmmakers around the world who want their films screened in the highest digital quality available,” said Diane Cappelletto, The Festival’s Director of Technical Production. Cappelleto adds: “Transforming many of our screens to digital format was made possible with the support of Christie, whose digital projectors are recognized worldwide for performance and reliability. We value Christie’s exceptional image quality and expert service to help make the Festival successful every year.”

“Throughout Christie’s long-standing partnership with The Festival, we have seen a growing use of digital projection technology for screenings. Last year, the sold-out documentary “Samsara” was screened in 4K,”said Kathryn Cress, vice president, Global and Corporate Marketing, Christie. “With its international flavor, The Festival truly transforms the way people see the world, and Christie is proud to support it as it transitions from what was once a film-only industry to one predominantly digital,” adds Cress.

Christie digital projectors are used by leading Festivals around the globe. This year, Christie renewed its official technical sponsorship of the Festival de Cannes for the next three years, a position it has held since 2006. In addition, Christie was the exclusive projection sponsor of the “Water for Elephants” screening at the opening gala of the 14th Shanghai International Film Festival last year. Today, Christie equipment is found in more than half of all digital projection rooms – about 33, 000 projectors in use.

Christie’s Commitment to HFR
The two main goals of Christie’s HFR activities are to help the industry develop the best HFR content and the best delivery system for HFR content. The first goal involves assisting leading-edge filmmakers and post-production companies in perfecting HFR movie creation, so the industry has the most engaging, entertaining content possible. The second goal is to assist exhibitors in showing these 3D HFR movies in all their glory. To these ends, Christie is helping create the standards for 3D HFR movies through formal and informal technology-development alliances with major producers and directors, post production facilities, studios and technology partners. On the exhibitor’s front, Christie provides one stop shopping for all the hardware, software and services that enable exhibitors to deliver a filmmaker’s vision in stunning 3D HFR quality. TAIDEN the Conferencing Technology for 31 Leaders to Communicate in 14 Languages during the G20 Summit

Last month in Los Cabos, Mexico, for the annual G20 Leader’s Summit, the heads of government, heads of international organizations, central bank governors, and other high-profile attendees used the TAIDEN conferencing and interpretation systems to communicate effectively during 4 days of meetings, in multiple languages.

This was the culmination of a series of large events in North America selecting a TAIDEN conferencing rental house as equipment provider to ensure the flawless implementation of meetings. For Media Vision USA, TAIDEN’s exclusive distributor in the US, Canada and Mexico, this is due to the technical features and flexibility offered by the TAIDEN technologies as well as to the availability of large quantities of recent, fully digital conferencing equipment for rental.

“In Media Vision’s TAIDEN rental network, companies have all the right technologies to respond to technical requirements such as all-digital conferencing, 32 channels of digital infrared language distribution, room overflow for the press center or remote interpretation” says Fardad Zabetian, CEO of Media Vision USA, “With all the high-profile events done in the past years, our rental network also has the experience to ensure expert setups, prompt adjustments and professional services; The staff is always what makes the difference”.

For the G20, meetings were held in 4 different event sites and about 20 rooms. Remote interpretation was setup for some sessions including for the G20 Leaders’ Dinner and the Press Center with interpreters using the booths in the main Plenary room and receiving video and audio feed from the rooms at the other side of the Convention Center. For the key meetings – the G20 Plenary Sessions with 31 heads of State, including President Obama, and international organizations – the ultimate TAIDEN HCS-4886/50 Fully Digital Conferencing Microphone with built-in channel selector and a large LCD display was used ensuring that the full spectrum of features would be available.

In the past years, TAIDEN conferencing and interpretation systems were also used for the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C. Another key statistic: the largest global forum ever held in Mexico, the October 2010 International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference, had a setup of about 1500 TAIDEN conferencing microphone units and 2600 digital infrared receivers for language distribution that worked flawlessly for the 18-day duration of the event.

With such references, Media Vision USA can only expect that the demand for TAIDEN conferencing and language interpretation technologies to be used for large events will keep on growing in the upcoming years. Companies interested in becoming a member of this rental network can contact Media Vision USA by email at sales@mediavisionusa.com

As Rockport Music Expands Operations and Musical Repertoire, Neumann KK 205 Capsule Delivers Unmatched Performance

Rockport, MA – July 25, 2012: Premium audio brand Neumann announced that Rockport Music has acquired several Neumann KK 205 capsules in addition to four channels of Sennheiser 2000 series wireless. The new equipment helps Rockport ensure it is able to deliver premium sound quality over the course of its 52 week programming schedule.

Rockport Music, which is best known for its Rockport Chamber Music Festival which began in 1981, has recently undergone significant expansion of both its physical footprint and musical repertoire. In 2010, it opened the Shalin Liu Performance Center, an elegant building that houses its 334 seat, world-class concert hall as well as a multi-function/reception space located on the 3rd floor used for corporate meetings, intimate performances, wedding receptions and many other activities.

The acquisition of the Neumann KK 205 capsules, as well as Sennheiser EM 2050 two channel receivers, Sennheiser SKM 2000 handheld wireless transmitters and lavalier body packs, in addition to a new antenna combiner, helps Rockport realize enormous performance flexibility while offering an unmatched dimension of audio quality to discriminating artists — many of whom insist on performing with Neumann.

Since the new facility opened, Rockport has gone from being a six week performance operation to a 52 week one, simultaneously expanding its repertoire beyond classical to now include jazz, folk, world music, pop and just about every other conceivable musical genre. The new concert hall has advanced A/V facilities including a 20 foot projection screen, and routinely features high definition simulcasts of performances by the Metropolitan Opera and England’s National Theater.

“During my first year here in 2010, one of my first goals was to bolster and enhance our in-house P.A. equipment,” commented David Shriver, technical operations manager for Rockport. “Having very high quality wireless handheld mics and belt packs was very important to me since I wanted a system that could be mostly used on stage but also offer flexible usage applications for other spaces in our facility.”

“The deciding factor for me in adding the Sennheiser 2000 wireless series came when Neumann introduced the KK 204 and KK 205 capsules this year,” Shriver continued. “I get rider requests for Neumann mics all the time, and I knew this was the direction we needed to go in. Neumann is the gold standard in microphones, and when an artist comes in and sees a Neumann mic, they are instantly confident in its ability to deliver.”

When the new Sennheiser 2000 wireless system is not being used in the concert hall, Shriver is able to use it on the 3rd floor multi-function/reception space: “Sennheiser’s Dave Missall came out, looked at the situation, and recommended an RF solution with antennas in the reception space and an antenna combiner to the existing antenna system in the concert hall. This enables me to use my four new RF systems in both places.”

While evaluating the new capsules and wireless sytem, Shriver relied on Rob Pemberton of Wellesley, MA-based Parsons Audio, who was proud to assist in the upgrade of such a world class facility, as well as Sennheiser area sales manager Mike Cleary. “Mike was great,” recalls Shriver. “He would let me try out a bunch of different microphones while we were trying to figure out what to buy — not just for handheld vocal mics, but for drums and other instruments as well.”

Shriver and Rockport Music are pleased with their new equipment acquisition: “The quality has been just top notch,” comments Shriver. “Since we added the Neumann capsules, a number of guest engineers and visiting bands have expressed their interest in working here and performing with the Neumann capsules on the stage. The sound makes a world of difference and also makes my job easier. I can run the mics flat and they sound great — also there is greater feedback rejection when compared to other microphones.”

Award-Winning Features
The acoustic features of the KK 204 and KK 205 capsule heads are derived from the multiple award-winning wired Neumann stage microphones, the KMS 104 and KMS 105. The KK 204, with its cardioid pattern, ensures the best possible suppression of sound originating from 180 degrees to the rear, while the supercardioid KK 205 has greater directivity, and maximizes incident sound from the front as compared to sound from the rear. Due to the “single polar pattern design,” the polar patterns are very uniform over the entire frequency range and provide excellent resistance to feedback.

City of Sturgis Expands Technomad Loudspeaker Installation for 2012 Motorcycle Rally

Technomad now covers entire downtown area; installer also adds loudspeakers to area businesses

BOSTON, July 25, 2012 – The City of Sturgis, South Dakota is ready to deliver big sound for the 72nd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with significant extensions to its downtown PA system. The expanded system, featuring nearly 50 Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers, will deliver entertainment and public safety information to the expected crowd of nearly 700,000 strong — and at a far greater capacity than in previous years.

The Technomad loudspeakers, which previously covered a four-block radius, now blanket the entire downtown area with intelligible voice and high-quality musical reproduction. Pete Torino, who specifies and installs PA systems, almost exclusively uses Technomad loudspeakers due to their fully weatherproof, MilSpec design and ability to project high-quality audio with broad dispersion over long distances.

Torino uses high-power Technomad Berlin and Noho models on downtown building rooftops, with 12 audio headends incorporating up to six loudspeakers apiece. Torino, who also operates local radio station KNKL-AM The Knuckle (1710AM locally, online at www.theknuckle.com), will simulcast KNKL programming over the Technomads throughout the Rally, and use their powerful output to broadcast important information to the large crowds.

“I’ve been the voice of the Rally for the past 12 years,” said Torino. “We continue to work closely with the City Emergency Management team to communicate public safety information for weather and other events. They give me about five minutes notice to make an announcement over the Technomads before they blow the downtown sirens. This keeps the crowds calm since they understand the situation when the emergency team flips the switch.”

The success of the downtown PA system has influenced Torino to specify and install Technomad loudspeakers at other area businesses and locations. This includes two Berlins and four Nohos for the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club — one of the world’s oldest motorcycle clubs — which offers a flat track, half-mile motocross track and challenging hill climbs on 40 acres of ground.

Torino has also installed approximately two-dozen Technomad Vernal loudspeakers in local convenience stores and restaurants, including the Elk Creek Steakhouse and Lounge in nearby Piedmont, South Dakota. The installations cover both indoor and outdoor areas, taking advantage of the Vernal’s compact design, powerful sound output and durable, weatherproof construction.

“The Vernals come in both 8-ohm and 70-volt configurations, and are ideal for businesses that have 70-volt systems already installed,” said Torino. “We replaced a lot of those old, awful-sounding 70-volt horns with Vernals. They provide much better sounding audio. The Vernals also deliver the same power and projection of the larger Technomads in a smaller package.”

Sturgis continues to stake its claim as one of the largest annual motorcycle rallies in the world, with the downtown streets swelling to more than 100 times the year-round local population each August. This year’s Rally will take place from August 6-12 and feature live performances from dozens of major touring acts including Zac Brown Band, Slash and Buckcherry. A full list of Rally-related events can be viewed at http://www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com/events/.

In addition to downtown Sturgis and local businesses, KNKL will be simulcast on KDSJ-AM in nearby Deadwood during the Rally. This delivers the station’s over-the-air signal to five states — while the web stream ensures that listeners around the world can take part in the festivities 24-7 at http://www.theknuckle.com.

Jackson, MO Strikes up the Band with the QSC Weatherized WideLine™-8 Line Array Loudspeaker System

Jackson, MO (July 23, 2012) – Throughout the summer months in Jackson, MO, the Jackson Municipal Band plays free weekly concerts every Thursday evening and performs throughout the year at important community events such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Homecoming. Ensuring that the band sounds better than ever for its ninety-second season, locally based systems integrator Unity Pro Audio and Video upgraded the Jackson Municipal Bandshell in City Park with the installation of a six-cabinet QSC Audio WL3082-wx Weatherized WideLine-8 line array loudspeaker system powered by three PowerLight™ 3 Series amplifiers.

The Jackson Municipal Band has been performing annually since 1976 at the outdoor bandshell, which is located in a grassy amphitheater bordered by trees, but until now has not had a purpose-designed PA system. “They were using point and shoot speakers. The community approached us to be a little bit more creative and push the envelope of technology a little; they knew that is our forte,” says Unity Pro AV’s Matt Schwartz, who mapped the location into EASE Focus and designed a system that he then presented to the board of directors of the community band.
Schwartz determined that the best solution for the bandshell, which is approximately 50 feet wide, was a center array with a wide dispersion pattern, and then selected the QSC Weatherized WideLine Line Array Loudspeaker system, citing its ample coverage and affordable price point. Two QSC PL380 amplifiers (2 x 2500 W @ 4 ohms) and a single PL340 (2 x 1250 W @ 4 ohms) power the array, which is optimized using an SC28 System Controller. Unity Pro AV additionally supplied eight QSC K10 two-way, 10-inch active speakers for use as floor monitors.

“As there are surrounding houses and residential areas near the bandshell, putting a line array on either side of the stage would have given way, way too much horizontal coverage,” says Schwartz. “The QSC WideLine-8 was the ideal solution as a center array because of its 140 degree dispersion. It allows us to keep the coverage off the local residences as much as possible and stay within the amphitheater.” Schwartz also reports that there is only a 3 dB difference in level between the front row and 300 yards away.
He continues, “From a budgetary standpoint, when I compared other weatherized speakers everything pointed back to QSC. Plus, I was able to get by with less amplification because we were using the PowerLight amps. I’d heard the WideLine System before and I knew it packed a heck of a punch. It’s a great system.”

Hanging a center array weighing more than 500 pounds required the fabrication of additional structural metalwork for the bandshell. Schwartz designed the new metalwork in consultation with a Professional Engineer (PE) to ensure proper load and wind resistance. “They stack bands there — they put one band on the ground and another on the stage — so we ran the structure out 12 feet. It’s very sturdy. We’ve had a lot of compliments about how well that structure ended up looking,” he says.
The Jackson Municipal Band, established by the Jackson Chamber of Commerce in 1920, performed at the gazebo on the Cape Girardeau courthouse grounds from 1932 until the dedication of the City Park Bandshell in 1976. The band’s current summer season kicked off on June 7 together with an opening act, the Southeast Missouri State Steel Drum Band.

Ingenuity Engine and Katy Perry are “Wide Awake” for 3D Music Video

Visual Effects Studio Teams with DNA and Panasonic to Create Dream World

(Los Angeles) Ingenuity Engine – an artist driven and owned visual effects studio – completed extensive work on the 3D music video for “Wide Awake,” which was written for the 3D “Katy Perry: Part of Me” film which opened on July 5. The video was directed by Tony T. Datis of production company DNA.

Ingenuity Engine delivered a wide range of shots in both 2D and 3D for the elaborate fantasy video that takes Perry on a journey through her imagination. “Wide Awake” begins with Perry completing the video for “California Gurls.” When she gets back to her dressing room, she falls into another world. In that magical place, she meets a younger version of herself, and the two face obstacles together while they make their way through an elaborate 3D labyrinth.

“All of the visuals we created for “Wide Awake” had to start as 3D elements,” explains David Lebensfeld, Ingenuity Engine creative director. “With fast-paced music videos like this, we generally use a lot of 2D elements and spend most of our time in compositing, but for “Wide Awake” all of the smoke, particle effects, and matte paintings had to be created in 3D and rendered for both eyes, which required significantly more work in the same tight schedule.”

Ingenuity Engine delivered over 140 shots in less than three weeks, including matte paintings, set extensions, various smoke, fog, fireworks and sparks effects, as well as CG elements, including a flock of CG butterflies that fly off Perry’s dress.

“To create the flock we modeled several unique butterflies, using reference photography taken on set,” says Lebensfeld. “Then these individual butterflies were rigged and animated with an initial flight cycle, which was augmented in a particle system to give each butterfly its own unique animation and flight path. Hero foreground butterflies were hand animated to facilitate the transition to the next scene and to take advantage of the depth we were working with in 3D.”

Compositing for “Wide Awake” was done in The Foundry’s NUKE and NUKEX, and tracking was completed in Andersson Technologies’ SynthEyes(tm). The CG was created in Autodesk(r) 3ds Max(r) along with Sitni Sati’s Fume and Thinkbox Software’s Krakatoa(tm).

“We are lucky to have a long history with DNA. Working closely with Tony and the DNA team allowed us to visualize and then execute the look they imagined,” adds Grant Miller, Ingenuity Engine creative director. “Because of the fast-paced nature of the music video industry, speed is essential. We are very proud that we were not only able to deliver this caliber and quantity of work with a very tight post schedule, but in stereo as well. There is talk that “Wide Awake” is going to set the benchmark for 3D music videos, and I think they’re setting that bar really high.”

The video is currently airing worldwide and can be seen at http://www.katyperry.com. Panasonic will showcase the 3D version of “Wide Awake” at consumer electronics trade shows, including IFA in Berlin as well in stores with Panasonic VIERA TVs on display around the world starting this fall.
