ASHLY PEMA 8125.70 COMBINED DSP/AMP PROVIDES BONUS PROCESSING AT MICHIGAN HOTEL

grandrapids_hilton.JPGGRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – JULY 2012: In addition to comfortable rooms and splendid amenities, the Hilton Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan offers over 7,000 square-feet of flexible event and meeting space for wedding receptions, parties, conferences, and the like. An array of microphone and line-level inputs tie into a sound reinforcement system that had been working for the Hilton and its guests admirably for over a decade. When, after extended 24/7 service, one of the system’s Ashly amplifiers gave up the ghost, the Hilton asked for an Ashly replacement, counting on another long run of trouble-free performance. KVO Communications, the local A/V contractor and integrator, that has been providing the Hilton with technical support for events for over fifteen years, obliged that request and installed an Ashly Pema 8125.70. Not only does the new Pema 8125.70 give the hotel eight amplifier channels in a more

Listen Technologies Announces Induction Loop Training & Certification Schedule

Listen Technologies has developed multiple levels of training to ensure the quality of loop installations for assistive listening customer in the Americas.

In response to tremendous interest in Induction Loop technology at InfoComm 2012 Listen Technologies is pleased to announce its Induction Loop Training & Certification Program schedule. Visit www.listentech.com/loop-training.

Hearing Loop solutions are the preferred standard and widespread throughout the rest of the world. Only recently has the technology begun to win favor and be installed in a wide range of venues in North America. This is the result of grass roots efforts of the hard-of-hearing community who demand the benefits that this technology can bring to them. The demand is escalating significantly as the overwhelming majority (90 %+) of hearing aids are today being specified with T-Coil loop receivers installed as standard.

In order to support this demand, starting this month, Listen Technologies will be training & certifying “Qualified Listen Loop Installation Partners” in every major metropolitan area in the Americas.

“Listen is the leader in the expanding Loop market,” stated Steve Woolley, Listen Technologies Wireless Listening Product Group Leader. “We are working with qualified installation partners to bring together the skill sets and parties to ensure that all Loop solutions are installed and supported to meet legal compliance obligations, IEC standards and the needs of the community.”

Hearing loops can be installed in a variety of environments, from larger venues such as theatres, conference facilities, houses of worship to smaller one-on-one communication settings such as ticket counters and meeting rooms. Mobile Loop solutions also benefit those that need hearing assistance in taxi cabs, trains, and buses.

Contractors and Integrators for mid-size installations and house of worship applications are needed for the immediate demand. Also, large scale AV integrators will be needed to support the growing consultant designs for University, Government and Corporate applications. Qualified and certified Listen Loop integrators will be clearly differentiated in the market by their ability to design and install superior performing high value systems.

“There are many variables in the ‘real world’ that must be taken into account for a system to be successfully specified installed and operated, noted Woolley. “Although many may understand loop systems fully, we have outlined this comprehensive support program to address the varying needs of each installation.”

To be able to purchase Induction Loop products from Listen Technologies, a dealer must complete the Basic Induction Loop Training webinar. In order to purchase Phased Array kits dealers must complete the Installation and Commissioning of Induction Loops one-day class.

For an overview and schedule of the Basic Induction Loop Training webinar and the One-Day Installation & Commissioning of Induction Loops visit www.listentech.com/loop-training.

Listen Technologies partnered with Ampetronic in April 2012 to distribute audio induction loop systems in the Americas. Ampetronic is the world leading provider of audio induction loop systems for assisting individuals with hearing loss. Future Lighting at Dorking Halls

Touted as the future of entertainment lighting for a number of years, LED-based lighting fixtures are now rapidly entering the mainstream, as witnessed by the re-equipping of Dorking Halls in Surrey, England, supplied by UK-based entertainment lighting specialists White Light. Prism Projection’s RevEAL Color Wash LED luminaire

The staff at the Halls, a versatile multi-purpose venue that hosts everything from concert recitals to wrestling to conferences to cinema to pantomime, felt that the time had come to replace the existing rig of 1,000W Fresnels and PARs. The aim of both Michael Knight and Craig Gravett of Dorking Halls was to build a lighting rig that offered more versatility compared to the existing gear while retaining the high-quality illumination and fades the Hall’s users expected – all while being more energy-efficient than the previous set-up.

In the first instance, Craig Gravett compiled a list of products that he thought would work well for the venue, including both fixed focus and moving LED fixtures. A full comparative demonstration of this equipment together with a selection of other products was then arranged by White Light.

Based on this hands-on testing, the final rig chosen consisted of a core fixed-focus rig from Prism Projection: eight Prism RevEAL
Color Wash fixtures and six Prism RevEAL Studio Fresnel fixtures. As with all of the Prism range, these fixtures include color mixing with built-in monitoring of the fixture output, allowing the light output to be consistent from unit to unit and to remain consistent over the fixture’s life. The Studio offers all of the flexibility of a traditional Fresnel, with a beam that can be varied from 20˚-70˚ either under local or DMX control.

Complementing the Prism fixtures are moving lights from JB Lighting, Martin Professional, and Philips Vari-Lite.

The considerably lower power requirements of this all-LED rig compared to more traditional lighting fixtures meant that the Hall was able to fund their purchase with an interest-free loan based on a scheme to provide loans for energy-efficient equipment, as long as the new equipment will pay for itself within five years.

“We have been delighted with our new rig,” comments Gravett from Dorking Halls, “primarily because it has provided incredible flexibility compared to our old rig of traditional lanterns, letting our users enjoy a whole new range of lighting possibilities. That it uses less energy than our previous rig is a welcome bonus!”

“White Light was invaluable during the process of deciding on the new rig,” adds Knight, “since their extensive equipment stock and their huge experience with all kinds of fixtures meant that they were able to offer advice and let us try things for ourselves hands-on, which is always the best way to pick new products. They were a delight to work with.”

Sky News Expands Vizrt’s Role in Creation of Live, Data-Driven Graphics for Daily Business News Updates

To ensure that viewers have the most current business news, Sky News has expanded its use of Vizrt’s Viz Content Pilot to create real-time, data-driven graphics for its “Business Bulletins,” presented at regular intervals throughout the 24-hour news day.

While Sky News has been using Viz Content Pilot template-based graphics and video management system and the Viz Artist design workstation to create full-frame graphics and 3D animations for some time, in May 2012 the network began using Content Pilot and Artist to embellish its Business Bulletins with full-screen graphics, side panels (for HD viewers), lower third supers and scrolling tickers that contain financial data updated in real-time.

“The design focus at Sky News is to provide our viewers with a wealth of timely information in an attractive, structured and understandable format,” said Brent Jones, head of 3D/VFX for Sky News in Isleworth, Middlesex, UK. Considered one of the world’s premiere breaking news networks, Sky News delivers international news to roughly 103 million homes in 115 countries worldwide.

Viz Content Pilot automatically requests specific data sets and then puts that data into designated fields within the templates. The templates can even update while they’re live on air. “Content Pilot is a straight-forward addition to our broadcast infrastructure,” Jones continued. “Its flexibility allows us to create a fully bespoke template system based on the requirements of our business team. The team can now respond to breaking news and illustrate financial stories as they happen—confident we’re always showing viewers the most up-to-date information.”

At Sky News, Viz Content Pilot is part of an integrated graphics workflow that was first installed in 2006 including: Viz Artist, VizWeather for live weather presentations, and Viz World to create interactive, 3D animated maps for broadcast and static 2D maps for its online and iPad news services. Viz Content Pilot was chosen because of its ability to integrate with the other Vizrt systems, including the Viz Engine realtime HD/SD rendering engines, and the ability to provide a fully customized producer interface.

“Increased investment in Viz Content Pilot and newsroom integration has enabled us to provide our entire business news team with user-friendly interfaces,” said Jones. “From the comfort of their own desks, our producers and journalists can quickly and easily create, modify, and then save their graphics directly into the rundown.

“The ability for several producers to access the templates simultaneously and the removal of the commissioning process has greatly improved the efficiency and delivery of our live graphics as well as our updates.” An in-house design team at Sky News creates all the graphics designs, develops control interfaces, and integrates the graphics systems.

“We’re delighted that this prestigious international news network has placed its confidence in our live, template-based graphics workflow,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, chief technical officer for Vizrt. “Viz Content Pilot saves broadcasters the time and expense of continually redesigning live graphics for air. Sky News takes great pride in its on-air branding and regularly refreshes its graphics workflow to offer the most appealing and current on-air presentations possible. We look forward to furthering our relationship with Sky News and supporting their efforts.”

Leading Designers and System Integrators Embrace Bose® Professional Audio Systems

Framingham, Massachusetts, July 18, 2012 – Products from the Bose® Professional Systems Division are becoming the systems of choice for leading designers, system integrators and contractors. From houses of worship and educational facilities to theaters and other fixed-installation projects, these audio professionals have been responding overwhelmingly positively, and specifying and installing systems using Bose’s RoomMatch™ array module loudspeakers and PowerMatch™ configurable power amplifiers, and employing Bose’s proprietary Modeler® sound system design software to aid in the design process.

RoomMatch loudspeakers deliver concert-quality sound for fixed installations in almost any room size, shape, acoustic requirement or budget. Using proprietary technologies, RoomMatch modules form a new class of progressive directivity arrays that allow designers to tailor the sound coverage of arrays to that of the audience area, while delivering seamless audio quality, with consistent front-to-back and side-to-side tonal ßbalance. The PowerMatch PM8500 is a configurable professional power amplifier delivering concert sound quality for fixed-installation sound reinforcement systems. Both of these product groups were developed with close input from top minds in the industry, as well as customers in the field. So far, the industry response has been very positive.

Integrator Ron Simonson, President and CEO of Olympia, Washington-based CCI Solutions, stated, “The innovative part of RoomMatch is this ability to select different boxes that have horizontal coverage angles and vertical coverage angles that can be designed in combination with one another to produce a custom solution for each room that we’re designing. And so far, every project that we’ve done, we’ve matched RoomMatch speakers with PowerMatch amplifiers.”

Progressive Electronics Inc., a design and integration firm based in Raytown, Missouri, recently upgraded the sound reinforcement system at World Revival Church in Kansas City with a state-of-the-art RoomMatch array. Systems Design and Sales principal Steven Brown noted, “Bose is able to ‘paint’ the space, keeping all the direct energy on the floor and on the seats but off the walls so that it doesn’t take away from the clarity and intelligibility. I think a RoomMatch system is able to provide sound that’s natural and true to the source. The isolation that the loudspeakers provide onstage allows you to take care of the musicians and presenters in a unique way so that they can have the tools they need to present well.”

After listening to a demo, Nashville, Tennessee-based Steven Durr, Principal at Steven Durr Designs, added, “The RoomMatch speakers were so beautiful in the vocal range, and the intelligibility was gorgeous from the front of the room to the back. And the PowerMatch amplifier is really spectacular, and it’s really going to change the way that people do things.”

Ken Dickensheets, CTO/Principal Consultant, Dickensheets Design Associates, Austin, Texas, reflects on a recent installation at the 1,800-seat Interstake auditorium at the Oakland California LDS (Mormon) Temple: “The room is acoustically difficult. The overriding consideration was speech intelligibility with the added need for excellent musical quality. When we looked at other speaker systems we could address some of the issues but not all of them; this one addressed all of the issues. And the estimates for this system came in below comparable systems, so we had a lower cost and higher performance.”

Morten Jorgensen, Sr. Manager of the Americas Professional Systems Division, states, “We are very excited about the progress we have made over the past five years. We believe we are bringing legitimate products to fruition for the installed market that solve fundamental problems that the industry has struggled with for years. At the same time we are heavily focused on providing best-in-class sales, engineering, and after-installation support to our key partners. We trust this recipe will make us a reliable, go-to partner for consultants and integrators who strive for delivering unique, high-quality experiences to their customers.

GC Pro Appointed Panasonic Professional Products Dealer

— Partnership with Panasonic System Communications Company of North America will enhance GC Pro’s installation services with expanded multi-media offerings, while providing Panasonic with penetration into additional market sectors —

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, July 16, 2012 — Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, is pleased to announce that it has been appointed as an authorized dealer for Panasonic professional products. The announcement was made by Rick Plushner, GC Pro Vice President, and reflects GC Pro’s ongoing expansion and dedication to providing turnkey solutions. As dealers, GC Pro locations will offer Panasonic professional projectors, cameras, recorders and display products.

Plushner stated, “As GC Pro has grown in scope, particularly with our Affiliate program, the installations projects have become more multimedia in nature, leading us to offer comprehensive turnkey solutions. By partnering with Panasonic, GC Pro is now offering a more complete approach to servicing our clients. We are not getting into the retail video business; rather, the application for these professional products is meant to enhance our installations business for many of our customers in the house-of-worship marketplace, recording and post-production communities, and general business-to-business applications. GC Pro has always offered high-end professional audio products, and now we’re excited to represent the most sought-after brand in the professional video business, rounding out our ability to provide complete cutting-edge installations.”

Bill Brennan, Senior Director, Category Sales, stated, “Panasonic is extremely excited about partnering with GC Pro, and supporting their go-to-market strategy. This relationship offers Panasonic the opportunity to expand our presence in markets that reach beyond our conventional customer base, and to approach clients from a unique perspective. I am extremely impressed with the passion and creativeness of the Senior Management Team and look forward to working and growing business together with GC Pro.”

Stephen Milley, National Sales Manager, Panasonic Professional Video Sales Channel, stated, “As part of Panasonic’s B2B initiative – the Panasonic System Communications Company North America – we are always looking for strategic partners that can integrate all of our various technologies seamlessly and have a client base to whom they can promote this portfolio on a national level. As a key partner, GC Pro is not only closely familiar with these technologies, but they are also able to penetrate market sectors that we are not strongly addressing at this point. This is a win-win situation, as GC Pro can now offer its clientele Panasonic professional broadcast cameras, video displays, projection etc., and Panasonic will grow its presence in new burgeoning markets, like house-of-worship, post-production and the musical entertainment industry, which GC Pro emphasizes as part of their core competency. Many of GC Pro’s customers have expanded their own areas of focus outside of simply audio, and we are proud to be able to partner with GC Pro to offer products to that end.”

Milley added, “Another thing that made GC Pro attractive to us as a strategic partner is that their parent company Guitar Center has a reputable, strong name that has clout in the industry, is financially sound and is a national company. This provides the foundation for GC Pro to grow, and the fact that they have 43 offices nationwide means further support of the Panasonic brand across the nation.”

Carl Tatz Design’s Revolutionary PhantomFocus™ System Teaches Students a Lesson at Vaughan Music Studios

— “The PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) monitor tuning protocol is the holy grail of studio monitoring, period… I’ve never had mixes translate as well as they do from this system, and I feel like I have grown exponentially as a mix engineer since Carl brought his genius to our facility in Ohio.” – Chief Engineer Mark Abrams —

Nashville, TN: Cindy Vaughan, CEO of Vaughan Music Studios (VMS) in Columbus, Ohio, and Chief Engineer Mark Abrams, began their new studio project by driving down to Nashville to experience the PhantomFocus™ System (PFS) at a few of Carl Tatz Design LLC (CTD)’s award-winning studios. As is often the case, CTD’s services were hired on the spot to help VMS design a studio for their beautiful new school that would feature the PFS as a major teaching tool. CTD was able to provide a control room design for this vibrant music school, ensuring the success of the PFS.

“We’re implementing the PFS in more and more educational facilities because the recording department heads realize that there is nothing more important in the recording process than accurate monitoring,” comments CTD principal Carl Tatz. “Students are paying substantial tuition fees for their specialized educations, and they really deserve to experience state-of-the-art monitoring as part of that education, so that they can carry this knowledge into the real world. It doesn’t matter how great or expensive the monitors are; they can never approach the accuracy of the PFS because of the various boundary and modal issues in a control room – no matter how well designed by me or any other designer. What we are doing with the PFS using any brand of monitors is quite revolutionary, and there is nothing offered that compares to it.”

Chief engineer Mark Abrams goes on to say, “I am able to make mix decisions with more precision in less time. It has literally cut my mix time in half. I never go to the car with the fear of saying ‘where did X go?!’ anymore. It’s all about enjoying the music on the way home now.”

Abrams gleefully recalls, “During a recent open house, we had a line similar to a new roller coaster at an amusement park. Just like a roller coaster, the facial expressions were priceless. Typically within the first five seconds, the listener will turn around with their jaw wide open. I actually had to show one listener that there was not a center speaker placed behind the video monitor!”

Commenting on the student experience, Abrams points out, “As a teaching facility, we benefit greatly from the PFS, as it allows students to hear the changes they make on an EQ or compressor with ease. So many instructional facilities try to teach their students about the sonic subtleties of specific pieces of gear using inadequate monitoring. Our students are knocked out by the incredibly responsive performance of the PFS when they put their hands on the gear and make even the slightest adjustments. They can hear what they are doing, which ultimately leads to a better educational experience.”

Aphex® Introduces HeadPod 4™

BURBANK, CA, July 18, 2012— Aphex®, the leader in sound enhancement technology, has introduced HeadPod 4™, a compact, portable headphone amplifier capable of driving four separate stereo outputs with individual level controls from the selected input source. HeadPod 4 combines four independent Aphex stereo amplifiers and high quality converters in a rugged metal case and offers ultra low distortion and wide frequency response with headroom to spare.

Headphone amp designs built on a single channel of amplification suffer from degraded sound quality and volume levels when multiple, mismatched headphone loads are connected. HeadPod 4 overcomes the limitations of typical headphone amps through the use of four completely independent stereo amplifier channels that ensure minimum distortion and crosstalk regardless of the headphone loads connected, resulting in consistent volume levels, crystal clear audio and no clipping.

Top panel controls include a separate level control for each of the outputs together with a master level control, and an input source selector. The rear of the unit houses a pair of balanced quarter-inch jacks, a single stereo headphone extension input and a digital S/PDIF connection.

HeadPod 4 is suitable for a variety of applications, including desktop audio production, recording and broadcast studios, language labs, quality assurance listening stations, rehearsal and tuition rooms, and live sound venues such as houses of worship and schools.

Television/Movie Composer Mark Isham Turns to GC Pro to Outfit His Home Studio

— As he creates scores for programs like ABC’s Once Upon a Time, Isham looks to GC Pro for products, service and support —

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, July 12, 2012 — Award-winning composer Mark Isham has an impressive list of credits: scores for such films as Crash, A River Runs Through It, The Black Dahlia, Blade and dozens more, as well as TV shows such as Chicago Hope; a number of GRAMMY®-winning solo albums; and a number of other highly regarded collaborative projects. Recently, his focus has been on composing the music for the hit ABC television series Once Upon a Time, a unique recasting of fairy tale conventions in a semi-modern setting. As he composes at his home studio for this project and others, he again and again turns to Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, to source gear and provide ongoing service and support.

“I have had a long relationship with GC Pro,” Isham says. “A lot of my equipment has come through there. The GC Pro branch in Hollywood has been our go-to shop for years. I love working with them, because if I want to try something out, they just get it to us. They have a great department there.”

For each episode of Once Upon a Time, Isham composes in Apple Logic, adapting his established character themes and creating new ones when necessary, and records in Avid Pro Tools. A demo then gets sent to his producer and the show’s creators, who send their comments. Once the material has been approved, the show goes into production, and an orchestrator generates the full scores from Isham’s themes.

As one might expect, the layout and components of Isham’s main writing room have been fine-tuned over the years to be perfectly conducive to creativity and productivity. A Logic/Pro Tools setup faces one wall, and a mixing console faces the opposite wall. He has multiple sets of monitors for a TV-type setup as well as a fuller theater setting. The mixing room features an Avid-Euphonix console, accompanied by a 10-way speaker system with Class A amps. He uses M-Audio digital audio and MIDI solutions, plug-ins from Universal Audio and Tannoy monitors, among other gear.

Southern California-based GC Pro Account Manager Bill Learned has been one of Isham’s main contacts. He states, “Mark is a pleasure to work with. As an artist, musician and composer he stands apart from the herd. He continues to push himself to explore new territory musically and in doing so stays on the cusp of what modern day recording has to offer. We are proud that he chooses to rely on GC Pro for his various needs.”
