Public Broadcaster Makes HD Studio Upgrade with Hitachi Cameras

Budget, Ease of Use, Picture Quality and SD/HD Interoperability Cited as Reasons for Selection by PATV-15

WOODBURY, NEW YORK– Cox Communications recently installed three Hitachi Z-HD5000 studio and field HDTV cameras in the Manchester, Connecticut studio of its public access channel PATV-15.

Residents in Cox Communications’ three franchise areas —Manchester, Cheshire, and Enfield, CT— can produce a show or a series for air on PATV-15 after taking a television production-training course. Because of this, user-friendliness was a key concern in camera selection. After they receive basic video training from PATV-15 production technicians—including Greg Thresher and Laurie Batignani—the new producers are able to truck the pedestal-based HD cameras around the studio and pan, tilt, and zoom.

Two other factors in the selection process were cost and SD/HD interoperability. “For us, buying three broadcast-quality HDTV cameras at once was a major capital expense—one that consumed much of our annual equipment budget,” said Chris Giard, Video Engineer, PATV-15. “We consider such large purchases carefully because we hope to keep the equipment in service for at least 10 years or more. We chose Hitachi for several reasons, including the outstanding service we’ve received over the years from our Hitachi Representatives Sean Moran and Kenneth Cyr, and the incomparable price-performance Hitachi delivers.”

Budget constraints prompted PATV-15 to tackle the HD studio upgrade in three phases, including Phase 1 for cameras. When Cox is ready, it will proceed with Phase 2 plans to buy a Broadcast Pix Mica or Granite HD production switcher among other production gear, and eventually Phase 3 for full HDTV distribution.

Because Hitachi Z-HD5000’s are native multi-standard cameras—with integrated format conversion—PATV-15 operators can shoot in HD today and output down-converted 4:3 480i SD-SDI video until the broadcaster has completed its entire HD workflow. In the future, Cox intends to buy additional Hitachi Z-HD5000’s to convert its Cheshire and Enfield studios to HDTV.

The three new Hitachi Z-HD5000’s cameras in Manchester are each outfitted with optical fiber camera adapters, 7-inch HDTV LCD color viewfinders, Hitachi CU-HD500 camera control units, and Hitachi’s RU-1000-VR remote control panels—critical for remote camera set-ups, such as color balancing and iris control.

While new HD lenses are on the station’s wish list, Giard reports that the Hitachi Z-HD5000 cameras produce superior image quality and meet their technical specs even with SD lenses. “This excellent picture quality motivates and inspires people to use our facilities and raises the bar on the credibility, impact, and value of the shows we air,” he added.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Showtech Sound & Light Design, based in Dubai, UAE, has become the first company in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) to purchase HARMAN’s JBL VTX line array system, adding to its existing JBL VERTEC® line array system and wide range of HARMAN products.

Showtech purchased the system from Dubai-based HARMAN distributor GSL Professional LLC. The system consists of 24 VTX V25 line array loudspeakers along with 16 VTX S28 subwoofers. To power the VTX system, Showtech purchased 32 Crown I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers.

Several years ago, Showtech was also the first company in the GCC to purchase JBL’s VERTEC VT4889 arrayable loudspeakers and the addition of VTX creates new opportunities for upcoming concerts, shows and other events.

As the first VTX system in the Middle East, GSL and Showtech are proud to demonstrate the latest technology introduced by JBL, including the D2 Dual Drivers found in the V25 cabinets. GSL believes that this system will bring a new standard to the rental and touring market due to JBL’s constant advancement in technology and vision towards the future.

Showtech’s HOD-Sound, Wasim Shaikh, commented, “We made this decision because of the performance of the products but also because of the ways in which the loudspeakers, amplifiers and other components are designed to work together. The purchase was made based on the professional and reliable performance of our VERTEC line arrays and we look forward to using the new system at upcoming concerts and events.”

Showtech’s Managing Director, Shaji George, commented, “We share a relationship of trust with GSL Professional and have been happy with JBL and HARMAN products over the years. HARMAN’s reliability makes our decision much easier when new products are introduced to the market.”

“This truly is a great sale for GSL Professional and will reflect highly for the HARMAN Professional brands in the Middle Eastern market,” said Shaikh.

Jünger Audio’s New V*AP Voice Processor Makes Its Debut At IBC 2012

At IBC 2012 (Hall 10, Stand D20), dynamics processing specialist Jünger Audio is unveiling V*AP, a brand new two channel voice processor that is specifically designed to make life easier for engineers working in radio stations and TV production voice-over studios.

V*AP draws on Jünger Audio’s extensive experience with previous Voice Processing devices such as its v-series, but adds new tools and algorithms to create a new, easier and more efficient approach to voice processing with no compromise in sound quality.

V*AP’s main task is to offer perfect control of microphone recordings but Jünger Audio has also included processing such as HP/LP filtering, dynamic section, full parametric EQ and de-essing. All of the V*AP functions can be easily performed with the click of a mouse, making it hassle free for any journalist or reporter to use. Jünger Audio has also provided a dedicated voice leveler combined with a voice over circuit to help integrate voice programs into loudness-based broadcasting on the fly. Using the optional SDI I/O card automated voice over for embedded audio becomes an attractive feature of the V*AP.

Available as either an insert into a mixing desk or as a stand-alone unit, V*AP offers interfaces that allow integration in existing environments via an AES insert. The unit can also use used with an optional analogue board that adds two high quality mic-preamps.

Another key feature of V*AP is the inclusion of Spectral Signature™, Jünger Audio’s automatic spectral sound management algorithm that dynamically boosts and attenuates frequency bands to preserve natural balance while achieving station sound without wide band crushing tools. With Spectral Signature™, users can automatically analyze the ideal recording of their voice (direct or over telephone lines) and easily create pre-defined sound fingerprints that become the reference the algorithm matches to on all subsequent live recordings.
