White Mark Designs Two Preview Theatres for NBC Universal

Studio design and acoustics consultancy White Mark Ltd has completed a major project for NBC Universal that involved designing two state of the art preview theatres at the company’s new international headquarters in London.

NBC Universal’s move into the award-winning Central Saint Giles office development allowed the company to bring all of its technical facilities together under one roof. Working in conjunction with architects T P Bennett and cinema optics consultant Lawrence Claydon, White Mark designed a 64-seat, double height screening room on the ground floor of the building and a smaller 18-seat theatre on the first floor. Both theatres are now being used for executive and private screenings.

David Hodgkinson, Senior Vice President, Theatrical Operations at NBC Universal, says: “We chose White Mark for this project on the basis of the company’s excellent worldwide reputation for designing sonically accurate film dubbing theatres and post production facilities, and we’re delighted with the end result.”

David Bell, Managing Director of White Mark, says: “This was a complex project because of the lightweight construction of the building and the fact that we were working within very tight space constraints. Also, as a mixed use building, it was imperative that both theatres had excellent acoustic isolation. To achieve satisfactory weight distribution, we built each theatre within its own steel isolation shell and placed these on top of each other to effectively create a theatre stack. As sonic excellence was an important part of our design brief, we paid careful attention to the room acoustics to make sure these theatres were as accurate as the professional film dubbing rooms in which soundtracks are mixed.”

Having completed the preview theatres, White Mark was then asked to design a range of other technical facilities including audio and video editing and post production suites, quality control suites and library and archive facilities.

“This project took 18 months to complete and involved high level collaboration with T P Bennett,” David Bell adds. “There was a fantastic spirit of cooperation between our team, the main architect Shane Kelly and interior designer Tajal Rutherford-Bhatt. Between us, we overcame a number of practical issues to create two stunning preview theatres and an impressive range of technical facilities that are exceptionally high-end.”

PESA Provides Customer Support at International Broadcast Center

Huntsville, Alabama – For three weeks prior to the opening of the Summer Games in late July, customer service personnel from PESA, a leading U.S.-based custom design and build manufacturing company for professional audio and video signal distribution, were on site at the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in London to support the setup and configuration of its routing switcher system, as well as provide training for technical operators.

PESA’s Cheetah fiber optic router plays a significant behind-the-scenes role in the distribution of live and pre-recorded video feeds for local distribution, as well as satellite feeds to the United States for re-broadcast. The router is based on an 864×864 frame – which was instrumental in high definition broadcast signals in previous years – populated with 816×800 coax and 48×64 fiber. The system includes PESA’s UCI-2000 controller card that allows it to be controlled via a Sony control interface.

In addition, the Korean Broadcast System installed a complete PESA system, also connected to the main IBC routing system, to support its coverage. The KBS system includes a Cheetah 288×576 video router coupled with a DRS audio router.

“PESA has been providing equipment and service support to broadcast Summer and Winter Games since 1988,” said Chuck Tillett, president and COO of PESA, “and we look forward to supporting our clients at future competitions.”

Designed to support 24/7 routing requirements, the Cheetah line of routing switchers offers a wide range of frames and card configurations. All Cheetah frames feature hot-swappable modules as well as redundant, load-sharing power supplies and superior air flow design for easier service and higher reliability. DRS is a full-featured, 24 bit, 96 kHz distributed routing system that uses high-speed multiplexing technology instead of a crosspoint matrix array for audio and time code signals.

About PESA

As a leading provider of audio/video connectivity, PESA offers a wide selection of routing switchers, matrix switchers, extenders, converters, media extenders, and signal processing gear to support government, military, industrial, commercial, broadcast and mobile truck applications. Washington State School District Augments Transportation Security with MobileCamViewer

Large school district adds application from mobile surveillance leader mobiDEOS to increase response times to security incidents

MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, August 6, 2012 — The Transportation Department of the Stanwood-Camano School District in northwestern Washington State transports 2,700 K-12 students to and from eight schools each day. The sheer volume of the student body requires a large bus fleet for the daily schedule, and protection against theft and vandalism is pertinent to keep everything running on time.

The school district has introduced mobile surveillance into its fixed security system to enable quicker evaluation of potential security incidents, using the MobileCamViewer mobile surveillance application from mobiDEOS to help keep transportation routines intact.

Lee Heinrichs, director of transportation for Stanwood-Camano School District, was looking for an application to expedite the process of incident response. Heinrichs downloaded MobileCamViewer to his iPad, immediately slicing slice two minutes off the security system login process — a potential difference-maker in critical situations.

“My iPad is instant on, so it is quicker to access my cameras than booting up my home computer and making a connection,” said Heinrichs. “This offers the potential for quicker analysis of a security breach, and offers a fresh approach from doing it the old way.”

The larger tablet screen allows Heinrichs to access all of his perimeter cameras live from a single screen. The seven cameras overlook various parking lots, a fuel tank and the central motor pool, giving Heinrichs a clear view of all activity around the perimeter.

Most calls coming from the district’s security company alert Heinrichs of general intrusions or alarms set off by staff — but the peace of mind that comes with an expansive security system incorporating fixed and mobile surveillance is priceless.

“As far as I can envision, there is a big advantage to being able to look at my cameras from a mobile applications, especially if I get a call while out on the road,” said Heinrichs.

MobileCamViewer offers secure, reliable carrier-grade cell phone-based video surveillance and remote monitoring solutions, providing “anytime, anywhere” mobile video surveillance for virtually every situation. Its compatibility across many smartphones, tablets, cameras, DVRs, NVRs and video servers — as well as simple integration with PC and MAC-based iOS systems — enables MobileCamViewer to comply with both new and existing network infrastructures. The basic MobileCamViewer application is free, with incremental costs for premium service users.

grandMA2 and Clay Paky Sharpys Step Out on the Country Scene

grandMA2 and Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures have gone country playing key roles on the ‘Brothers of the Sun’ Tour, with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, and at the fan-favorite CMA Music Festival, which held concerts at Nashville’s LP Field. A.C.T Lighting is the distributor of both grandMA2 and Clay Paky lighting in North America.

“I’ve been one of the beta testers for the grandMA2, and this year marks the first time that I felt I could exclusively spec the grandMA2,” reports Mark Butts who serves as programmer for the ‘Brothers of the Sun’ Tour, with Chesney and McGraw, and programmer and lighting director for the CMA Music Festival. “I’m now specifying them for all my new projects.”

The ‘Brothers of the Sun’ Tour, with Chesney and McGraw, is the tenth that Butts has done with Chesney. The all-stadium tour features “simple straight trusses but a lot of stuff. I decided to go with four grandMA2s just to manage the complexity of the show,” says Butts.

The consoles need to manage large amounts of data. “Kenny has 400 lights and lots of video – 24 layers of HD video and four servers with a custom Control Freak DMX bridge. We did a whole multiuser network. The features on the grandMA2 are really great when you have multiple programmers working on the same file and the same network.”

In addition, “the new effects are really cool, and the macros and interface are a lot faster and better. The hardware is also bigger, and you can see everything right in front of you,” he says.

Among the lights controlled by the grandMA2s are 16 Sharpys, which lighting designer Mike Swinford configured in four groups of four mounted atop giant Marshall amp replicas.

The four-night shoot for the CMA Music Festival featured 380 lights controlled by five grandMA2s on two separate control systems and one pre-vis suite. “It was more of a modern design,” Butts says. “It seemed like a really good time to upgrade. We had all these Jarags, and the grandMA2s were great at managing all that stuff.”

Swinford used 55 Sharpys on the CMA Music Festival spreading them out on low circular trusses “so almost every camera would get them in frame,” he explains.

Swinford was one of the first Sharpy users in the U.S. deploying the fixtures for TV and on tour. “I really like how small and fast they are,” he says. “If course, their main attribute is the tight beam that cuts through any other light in the design. I think of them as the new ACL.”

Butts agrees with Swinford about the power of the compact Sharpys. “They hold their own against 35 1200-watt lights in the stadiums on the tour, and they are very unique for TV.”

“The Sharpys are one of the most reliable lights we have,” Swinford concludes. “We seldom have issues with them.”

Butts reports that the grandMA2 consoles “worked great and really made my life easy on these gigs.” He also gives kudos to “the MA Lighting team and A.C.T Lighting for doing such a fantastic job supporting the systems.”
