Miller-Bell Media Productions Relies on New JVC ProHD Camcorder for HD, SD Projects

WAYNE, NJ – When Miller-Bell Media Productions, LLC (formally GIG 2 Me Music & Video) was established in 1998, co-owner Gary Bell purchased two JVC GY-DV500 professional DV camcorders, which were eventually replaced by a JVC GY-DV5000. In February, when the company decided to make the transition to HD production and adopt a tapeless workflow, Bell chose to stick with JVC and purchased a GY-HM710 ProHD camera.

“I’m a JVC loyalist,” Bell declared. “I just love the look JVC cameras give me. The image quality is excellent. Plus, I have a new client that needed special effects for an HD commercial, and the GY-HM710 produces nice, clean keys.”

Based in Lancaster, Calif., Miller-Bell produces a variety of television commercials and infomercials, plus corporate and government video projects. For a small shop like Miller-Bell, perception is everything – and a small camcorder simply does not provide the professional appearance required. While the GY-HM710 is smaller and lighter than earlier shoulder-mount models, Bell said its large lens and flip-out LCD screen makes a serious impression on his clients.

“Everyone claims they can do video production. There’s no way that I could walk in with a handheld camera,” Bell said. “For me, a shoulder-mount camera is a professional camera.”

When the company was a tape-based operation, Bell had a strict policy to never rewind footage in the field to avoid erasing content by mistake. The GY-HM710, however, records to inexpensive, non-proprietary SDHC media cards, so he can shoot footage and provide instant playback for his clients. “The LCD on the camcorder is so clear, they are just blown away,” he added.

Miller-Bell is also seeing operating cost savings with the use of SDHC cards. Bell estimated he has saved close to $500 on tape this year – and with JVC’s native file recording, he does not need to spend time transcoding footage for editing. “Being able to drag and drop to Final Cut Pro is amazing,” he said.

While Miller-Bell was ready to make the jump to HD, not all of its clients needed the upgrade. In fact, one of Bell’s first projects after purchasing the GY-HM710 was a branding video for the Antelope Valley Transit Authority, which serves Lancaster, Palmdale, and unincorporated portions of northern Los Angeles County.

The AVTA had previously hired Miller-Bell to produce a video documenting the construction of their new Lancaster facility, which opened in 2004. The new video was to provide a look back at the ATVA’s 20-year history and include archived footage from the earlier project. Rather than shoot the new footage in HD, the client specifically requested SD footage so it would match the archival footage.

“There’s still a huge market for SD out there. Some of my clients are still in that SD niche,” Bell explained. “I needed a camera that could shoot SD and HD to satisfy the different types of clients I have.”

Former Genzyme CEO Finds ELAN g! Is The Perfect Prescription For Easy-To-Use Home Control

Home entertainment and control must be easy to be useful, and perhaps no one knows this better than former Genzyme CEO Henri Termeer. When he hired Groom Construction of Salem, Mass. to build an addition to his Marblehead, Mass. home, he also contacted Connected Systems Group to make every piece of technology easy to operate — including more than 200 motorized window shades throughout the home. Having some experience with a more complicated and sometimes frustrating Crestron system, he knew that there had to be a better way.

“Everything I want from a home entertainment and control system has been perfected in the new ELAN® g! system,” said Termeer. “The touch screens, the interface, the speed, and even the iPhone app are so good that I just sat down and started using the new system without having to consult a manual or ask any questions. It was painless, and it took me 10 minutes to learn the whole system from top to bottom.

“As the former CEO of one of the world’s leading biotech companies, I know that every investment has to be evaluated in terms of the return it will generate,” he continued. “The ELAN g! system was absolutely the right investment for me when it came to upgrading my home and giving me simple control of everything from lighting to security.”

One of the reasons Termeer needed an easy-to-use system was the fact that the home addition includes a new indoor swimming pool built inside an all-glass conservatory with more than 100 windows — each with its own motorized shade. With such a massive shade array simple operation is a necessity. The custom integrators at Connected Systems Group programmed the shades in groups so letting in a little or a lot of sunlight is as easy as pushing a button. Using a combination of Lutron shades and an English brand so that they could completely cover every inch of glass, allowing the entire conservatory to go from night to day with a single button.

According to Philip See, President of Connected Systems Group, “One of Mr. Termeer’s Maine properties has a Crestron system that he’s had a lot of issues with over the years, which is why we decided the ELAN g! system was the best choice for his new home addition in Marblehead. Now that he’s had time with the g! system, he’s eager for us to go to Maine to replace his Crestron system with ELAN g!, as well as put a g! system in a condo in Boston.”

This Elan g! system integrates more than 200 motorized window shades, 16 motorized windows, 90 Pulseworx lighting loads, pool fans and Pentair pool and spa equipment, eight thermostats in the new addition, 10 surveillance cameras with DVR, a Hunter irrigation system and controls the property’s two entrance gates, each with a camera. When someone approaches the gates, the g! system automatically turns on the gate camera and displays the video feed on the touch screens in the kitchen and swimming pool room.

As for the home’s media, the system gives Termeer fast, simple control over 13 zones of audio, 11 TVs and a home theater that features a 110” motorized screen, a SIM2 projector on a motorized lift and a 7.2 surround sound system. The theater produces professional quality sound, partly thanks to the acoustical backing applied on the custom-built ceiling.

Termeer controls his g! system from four iPads with the g!Mobile app, a 10-inch ELAN touch screen in the kitchen and a 7-inch ELAN touch screen in the swimming pool room.

The ELAN g! Entertainment and Control System provides users with the most uniform and intuitive icon-based control from their favorite devices including TVs, touchscreens, touchpads, PCs, iPhones and iPads. The standardized interface works across platforms, so that the trendy g!Mobile app users love on the iPhone appears and works similarly on ELAN touchscreens, valets and handheld remotes as well as users’ televisions and mobile devices. And the system’s IP backbone makes it just as easy to control the system from across the room – or across the globe.

Individual “apps” for each subsystem allow the user to control security, climate, lighting, media, irrigation, pool/spa, messaging, video and photos with the flick of a finger. Access is fast and secure through any ELAN home interface or globally with mobile Internet enabled devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Netbooks and PC Tablets. Since the intuitive interface empowers users with personalized scheduling and detailed history views, high consumption subsystems like lighting and climate can be closely monitored and managed for a greener lifestyle – and substantial energy savings.

EA’s Press Event at E3 Gets AV Support from WorldStage

High Tech met Old World when top game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) staged its press event during the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) at LA’s century-old Orpheum Theatre with AV support from WorldStage. “The Download: EA 2012 Preview” provided guests with a first look at EA’s upcoming titles with live demos, world premiere trailers and breaking news.

“Electronic Arts is one of the world’s leading game publishers, and we at WorldStage were proud to be the chosen provider of innovative, state-of-the-art technical solutions for their press event,” says WorldStage project manager Jack Dussault.

EA’s Press Conference was broadcast live on MTV2, Spike and G4 television. The event was part of Spike TV’s “E3 All Access Live” coverage, which featured more than 17 hours of multi-platform coverage from the convention. The press event premiered such highly-anticipated games as SimCity, Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, Medal of Honor Warfighter, Madden NFL 13 (with a live appearance by NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin), FIFA 13 and other projects currently in development.

“Besides a live invitation-only presentation, this year 1080i, 720P, 480i and composite feeds went out worldwide to -over three million viewers,” Dussault notes. “It was streamed live from 11 sites, including IGN, Boxdownstairs, Stuff We Like, EA.com, JeuxVideo, GameSpot, EuroGamer (France), Game Informer and Gamers Bliss. After the event, the footage was posted to sites such as GameSpot and G4, eventually reaching an estimated virtual audience of over six million viewers.”

“This was the fifth year Debra Robins, owner and Executive Producer of Plumbago Productions brought our firm in to support the audio and video requirements of the EA press event,” says Senior Account Executive Michael May. “Each year Debra and Plumbago Productions’ Creative Director, Jeffrey Hornaday create a unique, “boundary pushing” technical stage design. We were extremely honored to once again be part of the production team.”

WorldStage provided an array of display surfaces for the Orpheum stage. A custom 50′ x 30′ voile scrim that hung across the front edge of the proscenium served as the display surface for a trio of Christie HD18K projectors mounted on the front of the balcony.

Three LED screens were positioned upstage behind the scrim: a 15×26-foot center screen, which was stationary, and 6.5×10-foot screens on either side, which flew in and out depending on the segment and the look desired. The LEDs were composed of approximately 200 PIXLED F-6 LED tiles.

“During certain segments of the presentation, the LEDs went black so you couldn’t see them behind the scrim,” recalls May. “Then we’d fire them up and you’d get an awesome three-dimensional visual experience.” The LEDs gave a lot of depth to the stage. There was only 1 presenter that appeared between the main led screen and the scrim. This was the CEO – during his introduction,

Rounding out the video gear were five HD cameras: three Hitachi SK-HD1000s, one of them on a 30-foot jib, and two Sony BRC-H700s robotic cameras, WorldStage’s Digital MediaHub players and a Spyder screen switching system.

On the audio side, “We retrofitted the client’s demo game sources and video sources with state-of-the-art HDMI to 5.1 analog audio decoders to feed center, subs, left/ right side and rear true 5.1 surround sound with over a half-million watts of amplification for a truly amazing surround audio application,” says Dussault.

The WorldStage team for the EA press event included Shane Zinke as EIC, Jason Spencer Spyder operator, Rob Ricci media hub playback, Ken Stanford video director, Justin “MC This” Hammond robocams, Terry Nakamura and Bryan Dominick projectionists, Ken “soundmantofthestars” Newman A1, Geoff Gibson A2 systems and Will Herold A2 RF.

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

D.A.S. AUDIO DEPLOYED AT STJARNAN F.C. HOME STADIUM

*** The Stjarnan F.C. home stadium ***

Garðabær, Iceland – August 2012 … Located in what many people know as Gardentown, Stjarnan F.C. is an Icelandic football (soccer) club that is part of the KSI Premiere League. For their home games, the stadium had previously used various portable PA systems for announcements. This situation resulted in inconsistent sound quality, creating a most frustrating experience for both the announcers and the fans alike. Recognizing the need for a better solution, stadium management recently elected to deploy a more permanent solution—one that was drawn from the catalog of Valencia, Spain-based D.A.S. Audio.

Garðabær based Northern Lights Audio, a design/build firm specializing in audio, video, lighting, security, and heating solutions for both the professional and residential markets, was contracted to design and install the stadium’s new sound reinforcement system. Þorsteinn Halldórsson, the firm’s owner discussed the project and his reasons for installing the D.A.S. Audio equipment. more
