May 4-7, 2013 At The Roma Eventi – Fontana di Trevi Conference Centre

ROME, ITALY: “We take great pleasure in announcing that the 134th Audio
Engineering Society Convention will be held in Rome, May 4-7, 2013,” reports AES
executive director, Bob Moses. “Set in the heart of the ‘Eternal City’ at the new Roma Eventi – Fontana di Trevi Conference Centre, the Convention will be chaired by Umberto Zanghieri, vice president of the AES Southern Europe Region,” Moses adds.

Recently opened in the heart of Rome, a stone’s throw from the Quirinale Palace and, its namesake the Trevi Fountain, the very modern, Roma Eventi – Fontana di Trevi Conference Centre is situated in a magnificent neoclassical palace, built by Guido Barluzzi in 1930. Designated by Benedict XV as home to the Gregorian University, the Conference Centre covers almost 30,000 square feet, and consists of 15 meeting rooms able to accommodate over 1,000 participants.

The 134th AES Convention will bring together audio engineers from around the world to ‘Listen, Learn, Connect’ and, share the latest knowledge in audio research, development and applications. More details will follow shortly. This marks the first time an AES Convention will be held in Rome.

The 133rd AES Convention will be held in SF’s Moscone Center, Oct. 26 – 29, 2012

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi Series Consoles Travel The World With Kaiser Chiefs

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — While on tour with 5-piece indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs, sound engineer Chris Leckie, relies on HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi Series consoles for all FOH and monitor needs. Kaiser Chiefs, who released their debut album titled Employment in 2005, have enjoyed great international success touring throughout Europe and the North America.

In 2007, Kaiser Chiefs were about to embark on their largest and most ambitious arena tour to date in order to support their second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob, when their previous engineer decided to give up his position. Leckie came on board and adjusted to the task, but was always jealous of the Soundcraft Vi6 console that was on tour with them to handle the opening acts. “As the tour progressed I found myself experiencing console envy!” said Leckie.

Leckie noticed how easily visiting engineers, from youngsters to experienced professionals like him, became acquainted with the feature set of the Vi6 and produced stunning results. “I quickly realized I needed to switch allegiances,” Leckie said.

During the European part of the tour, which is currently taking place through the end of July, Leckie and monitor engineer, Ilias Andrianatos, have been able to use the Vi6, which is now their console of choice. However, during the preceding North American leg of the tour, it was not logistically practical to transport the Vi6 around the country. “HARMAN and Soundcraft were helpful in supplying a pair of the more compact Vi1 consoles to be used by me and our monitor engineer. This allowed us to retain most of the facilities available to us on our Vi6, and keep some degree of consistency from show to show.”

Many challenges come with being a sound engineer for Kaiser Chiefs, according to Leckie. “They don’t play to a click track which adds difficulty to my job. There isn’t a rack of equipment sending me identical program material at the same level every night, and if I’m going to keep a handle on the somewhat unpredictable, wriggling beast that is a Kaiser show, I need to see what is going on at all times and have access to everything as quickly as I would on an analog board. Soundcraft and the Vi Series does that, and at any point I can see EQ, gates, compression, effects, etc., on every channel, rather than having to negotiate my way through multiple tiers and screens.”

While on tour, Leckie explained the importance of having a reliable console that can perform in any situation. “I also need a console that is easy and quick to use, and on top of everything, it needs to sound good.”

“With each software update the desk gets better, with sensible and useful additions that continue to make my job easier and more enjoyable. The new user layers allow me to arrange faders into convenient locations for specific songs,” Leckie said. “This has been a revelation! The quality of EQ and dynamics of the Vi console is superb as well. At any time, Ricky Wilson [vocals] can pick up any of the three different vocal microphones at his disposal and I have to maintain the intelligibility and consistency when he climbs up in the front of the PA or wherever he runs around.”

“I’m grateful to be mixing on a Soundcraft board and continue to love my job, which is the most important part. With the help of Soundcraft it only gets better,” Leckie summed up.

T-VIPS CP524 TS Adapter Enables Operators to Flexibly Repackage and Deliver Video Content to Multiple End Points

T-VIPS IBC stand: Hall 1. B71.

Oslo, Norway – T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announced the IBC launch of the CP524 TS Adapter, which supports multi-stream (any input to any output), remultiplexing, and flexible format conversion.

The CP524 has been designed to meet the requirements of operators and service providers for flexible repacking, and delivery of content for multiple end points. The CP524’s filtering and remultiplexing features enable operators to save valuable bandwidth. Pre-production models have been successfully trialed at operators’ sites and the product is now ready to ship.

T-VIPS anticipates that the CP524 will be particularly popular with:

- Broadcast service providers that offer television contribution and distribution services
- IP network operators offering managed video services
- Satellite network operators for contribution to satellite uplink sites
- Terrestrial network operators for the primary distribution of ATSC, DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals.
“The CP524 TS Adapter provides a single-box solution that takes the pain out of remultiplexing and filtering, and mixing and matching services from multiple inputs to multiple outputs,” said Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “As well as the remultiplexing functionality we’ve also included extra features such as interface conversion, advanced IP processing, redundancy, monitoring and PSI/SI/PSIP handling, making this an incredibly powerful solution. For many operators and service providers our CP524 is the only MPEG-2 TS solution they will need and since it’s a single unit it reduces running costs and space requirements too.”

The variety of network infrastructures used in the broadcast industry today has led to increasing demand for network adaption and conversion between formats and interfaces. The CP524 solves these issues, for up to four transport streams, by offering powerful network adaption between ASI, IP, SONET/SDH and SMPTE 310.

In addition to providing conversion between interfaces, the CP524 provides powerful TS processing capabilities that are easy to use and configure. The CP524 is also equipped with reliability features such as hitless switching with diversity reception, service fallback and T-VIPS Embedded Redundancy Control (TERC) to ensure 100% uptime even in the case of severe packet or link loss.

The CP524 is part of T-VIPS’ cProcessor toolbox which makes TS processing simple and delivers flexible, cost-effective interfacing to broadcast and IP-based networks. The CP524 gives operators the capability to process, tailor and distribute signals according to their own needs.
