Starlite Productions Provides a Complete HARMAN Audio System to Tropicana’s Boogie Nights Club, Debuting JBL’s New Marquis Dance Club Series Loudspeakers

Starlite Productions outfitted the new Boogie Nights dance club in Atlantic City with JBL’s new Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Providing Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino and Resort with a complete audio solution for its retro ‘70s and ‘80s Boogie Nights dance club, Moorestown, New Jersey-based Starlite Productions installed HARMAN’s JBL Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers, making it a premier night club that boasts high-fidelity sound quality.

The Tropicana needed a solution after management renovated a section of its casino into the Boogie Nights club and approached Starlite to design the venue’s entire audio, video, control, and lighting system. “The biggest challenge was ensuring our clients’ needs were met to the fullest degree, while keeping everyone involved on the same page throughout the process,” stated Brandon Powell, Systems Project Manager at Starlite.

Boogie Nights comprises a long space just off the casino floor with three sections including a club area, a bar and lounge. There is also a VIP area and a balcony area that performers and dancers can access.

The audio system in the club area is anchored by JBL’s new Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers, specifically designed for the dance club market with unprecedented fidelity, clarity and breathtaking purity. There are four JBL MD49 loudspeakers and four MD7 dual 18-inch subwoofers suspended from the building structure, hung to cover the dance floor from all sides while providing stereo imaging from any dance area on the floor. They are positioned around and inside the perimeter of a large circular truss roughly 30 feet in diameter that is suspended 20 feet above the dance floor. This allows people to step just beyond the dance area to converse without interference from the high-output levels of the loudspeakers. Other overhead features include intelligent lighting, fog machines, bubble machines, video projectors, and the biggest disco ball on the Atlantic City strip. There are also 10 MD55 loudspeakers throughout the bar and lounge, with two of them flown over the stage for the DJ or talent monitors.

All the speakers are powered by Crown amplifiers, which are located in the equipment racks next to the bar. There are two Crown Macro-Tech 12000i amplifiers, six Macro-Tech 5000i amplifiers, one CTS2000 amplifier and one CTS8200 amplifier.

The system also boasts two BSS audio processors: a BLU160 and a BLU320 handle audio routing, signal processing and speaker management throughout the space. Starlite utilized an additional output to feed the casino floor area immediately outside Boogie Nights, so during open hours, what is being played inside will overflow into the gaming space, excluding microphone feeds.

When deciding on the best equipment for the job, Lenny DiGangi, AV Sales & Design for Starlite, mentioned, “We have a great relationship with HARMAN and knew the Marquis Dance Club Series would be perfect for this application. Everyone has their preferences and we chose the products and components that make us the most efficient installers and programmers, while keeping the project in the scope of what our client wants.”

“I was impressed with the MD49 loudspeakers as they are smooth right out of the box,” Powell said. “The Marquis Dance Club Series is set up for clubs. The super tweeters and the 4-way, quad-amplified configuration add great value and sound quality to these boxes, giving them exceptional clarity with loads of headroom.”

“The Macro-Tech amplifiers are workhorses,” Powell added. “The CTS amplifiers get the job done well—this is known industry-wide and is the reason we continue to use them.”

“Starlite did a fantastic job with the entire project, especially since the installation experience was very challenging,” said David Peña, Owner, Boogie Nights. “Since the club is a transformation of a huge open space, it was a difficult room to fill evenly with audio. The sound system is incredible! Customers constantly comment on how impressed they are and how clean it sounds. The lounge area has great energy while allowing patrons to still have a conversation due to the ability to direct sound. The loudspeakers definitely complete the Boogie Nights experience. Some of our other clubs have JBL and we’ve always had great experiences with their products. JBL is a name I feel comfortable with and I know their speakers are dance quality.”

Other members of Starlite Productions who helped with the design and implementation of the project include; David King, Senior Systems Manager who wrote the HARMAN HiQnet London Architect™ file and tuned the space using Smaart real-time sound analysis; Mark Pacitti, AV Integrator who wrote the program that manages system control and video routing; James Suit, Lighting Sales, who was in charge of lighting design; and Brandon Creel, Systems Project Manager who programmed the intelligent lighting and dance floor.

Yamaha CL Console Lights Up Orion Festival

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Bader Field in Atlantic City over a recent summer weekend was the site for the Orion Music + More Festival featuring Metallica on the main stage along with 30+ bands and over 33,000 in attendance on each of the two-days.

ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) provided the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Console and two Yamaha PM5Ds for the Damage Inc stage along with ten Yamaha TX3n amps for monitors. The Damage Inc stage featured performances by Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, The Black Dahlia Murder, Torche, Letlive, Red Fang, Kyng, Landine Marathon, Black Tusk, and Thy Will Be Done. The front of house engineers for the acts got their mixing hands on the new CL console, with Yamaha and ACIR staff on hand to answer any questions.

“Having already been familiar with the Yamaha PM5D, the CL was a breeze to use,” states Matthew (Woody) Woods, front of house engineer for The Black Dahlia Murder. “From the layout, navigation, display and touch screen, the CL makes it much easier to adjust your mix.”

“The CL5 was so quick in getting my mix where it needed to be thanks to the user defined knobs and touch screen capabilities,” says front of house engineer for Red Fang, Adam Pike. “The console was truly put to the test at the Festival where we had to do line checks through headphones. I had no idea what it was going to sound like when we went live through the mains. By the end of the first song, I was already shaping with the Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5043 and 5033 in the Yamaha CL; I felt so spoiled!”

ACIR Professional also provided a Yamaha LS9-32 with eight Yamaha DSR 15 speakers and eight DSR subs for Rob Trujillo, the bass player of Metallica, for use on the Vans stage.

“Front of house engineers were pretty enthusiastic about using the new Yamaha CL5 at the Damaged Inc stage, which is a testament to the Yamaha familiarity found throughout the company’s digital console series,” states John Grasso, co-owner of ACIR Professional and systems engineer for the Damage Inc stage. “We wanted to provide an opportunity for the festival engineers to gain the benefit of being the first in our market to work on the console, and we believe it was immensely successful for us, the engineers, and Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems.”

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6™ Console Supports Ray Davies Tour All Day and All of the Night

Tristan Mallett, FOH engineer for Ray Davies, with the Soundcraft Vi6 console.

NORTHRIDGE, California — Building on years of success with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 digital mixing console, rock and roll legend Ray Davies used a Soundcraft Vi6 as the front of house console for his recent tour.

Davies, co-founder of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members The Kinks, recently embarked on a tour through Canada and the United States, with Los Angeles-based group The 88 serving as Davies’ opening act and backing band. Davies’ performances span a seemingly endless catalog of legendary songs, a few of which include, “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “Sunny Afternoon” and “Waterloo Sunset.”

Tristan Mallett has been the FOH engineer for Davies for 15 years, working in coordination with monitor engineer Chris Wibberley, who has been with Davies for the past 12 years. Mallett is a longtime user of Soundcraft’s middle-footprint Vi4 digital console.

“I’ve also used the Vi1 quite a bit and I love it equally,” Mallett said. “It’s nice and compact, sounds great and I love the idea that one show file fits all. Having everything fit on a Vi1 allows me to get a bit more indulgent with my music pages on the Vi6. However the small footprint of the Vi1 makes it perfect for music festivals.”

As Davies’ set ranges from softer acoustic tunes to some of the heaviest rockers, Mallett’s responsibilities include accommodating for a massive dynamic range. “I need something that will be low noise at low volume and then also something I can drive hard, without running the risk of it overdriving,” he said. “With the Vi6, even if you do hit red lights, you don’t hear them. Transparency and faithful reproduction are vital and very important, especially with guitars. This is why large diaphragm AKG 414 microphones are used on the guitar amps and combined with the Studer microphone amplifiers before entering the digital stage.

“Mic amps are the highest priority for me, plus the Vi Series has everything in one package, with no need for outboard gear,” Mallett added. “There are some really nice reverbs in there. The Vi’s de-esser is also amazing—I don’t even need to know how it works, it just does the job seamlessly!”

In addition, thanks to the Vi6’s Vistonics™ II user interface, Mallett finds the Vi6 very easy to use.

“The whole layout is very accessible and with the Vistonics interface I don’t think I’ve ever lost my place on the board,” Mallett noted. “The operation of the Vi6 is very intuitive and almost foolproof in that respect.”

In addition to the Vi6 console, Davies relies on a variety of HARMAN’s AKG microphones. “For Ray’s vocals, we’ve used a D7 exclusively for the last 18 months—it’s an outstanding vocal mic,” Wibberley said. “We have 414’s on the guitars, which are great, as well as some D5 and even 535 microphones on stage.”

Like many live sound engineers, Mallett’s transition from analog consoles to digital several years ago was one he was reluctant to make. However, friend and longtime Soundcraft supporter Paul Hatt of CS Audio Ltd. England, turned Mallett on to the Soundcraft Vi Series.

“I’ve always liked analog but we of course are now in the age where digital consoles are so much more reliable, so I entered the digital world kicking and screaming, but the Vi consoles helped tremendously,” Mallett said. “The Vi is very forgiving and feels like an analog board. It takes a lot of punishment, which is a requisite for rock and roll!”

grandMAs and Clay Paky Sharpys are Winners at Miss Florida USA 2013 Pageant

In its second consecutive year broadcasting in HD on primetime television, the Miss Florida USA 2013 pageant again featured grandMA lighting consoles behind the scenes. This time lighting director Stefan DeWilde also selected a complement of Clay Paky Sharpys for the event boosting the impact of the lighting rig. A.C.T Lighting in the exclusive distributor of both grandMA and Clay Paky fixtures in North America.

Staged in Davie’s Bailey Concert Hall on the campus of Broward University, the pageant featured more contestants than ever before and was televised live to fans across the Sunshine State. Michelle Aguirre was crowned Miss Florida and moves on to the national Miss USA competition.

“We had twice as many moving fixtures as last year,” reports DeWilde. “I used Sharpys around the floor for aerial beam effects. They were a prominent part of the program – every scene was tightened by Sharpy. Although we only had six of them, they cut through 85 other automated fixtures.”

DeWilde also deployed an expanded grandMA system, which featured an NSP and eight universes. “It was very important to have the NSP,” he says. “It was essential to have everything networked on the show.”

The Orlando office of stage lighting rental and production company Christie Lites furnished the grandMA and Sharpy fixtures. “CEO Huntly Christie really came through to pull together this equipment,” says DeWilde. “The partnership between Christie and A.C.T is just great.”

“This pageant was the first time I’d used the Sharpys, and they were so phenomenal that I’m going to use them in the New World Center,” he says. DeWilde is director of lighting for the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. “The Sharpys are small and lightweight, and their output and speed is amazing.”

He also gives kudos to the grandMAs. “The consoles were fast with no lag in network communication. Shows like this always come down to flexibility, speed and consoles. We have a ton of equipment and very little time to put things together.”
