Visual Unity Launches 4K Gateway For Real-Time Low-Latency Video Streaming

At IBC 2012 (Hall 3 Stand B60), leading broadcast and multiscreen systems integration company Visual Unity will launch 4K Gateway, a portable device for real-time low-latency video streaming up to 3D 4K.

Hailed as the latest step in the evolution of online video, 4K digital video offers approximately four times the resolution of the most widely-used HD television format, and 24 times that of a standard broadcast TV signal. This cost-effective streaming device allows film, post production and visualisation companies to harness the power of 4K over unlimited bandwidth/distance in collaborative environments.

“As 4K comes of age, media organisations face the challenge of efficiently and cost-effectively delivering a more immersive and engaging visual experience to their demanding audiences, says Tomas Petru, President of Visual Unity. “4K Gateway is an elegant solution to this challenge as it addresses the need for high quality and reliable transmission of high resolution content, whether it be for collaborative film post production, the streaming of live events in digital cinemas or e-Learning in medical and educational establishments.”

Linear and multiscreen systems integrator Visual Unity has a strong track recording for designing and implementing leading solutions for broadcasters and media organizations worldwide. To develop 4K Gateway, Visual Unity worked in conjunction with Czech academic association CESNET and Prague-based independent post-production facility ACE.
Operating over dedicated photonic networks or shared Internet, 4K Gateway offers very low latency of less than 1 ms plus networking delay, thus ensuring a truly interactive experience. Higher buffering can be optionally selected to compensate high network jitter or for special applications. 4K Gateway uses industry standard HD-SDI interfaces for eight video inputs and eight video outputs, all working simultaneously in multi-channel full-duplex operation. Each HD-SDI channel can operate in full mode (all dark areas transmitted) or view mode (dark areas not transmitted). The latter allows the transmission of eight HD-SDI channels over a single 10 Gigabit Ethernet interface, thus enabling uncompressed 3D 4K or 4K RGB (4:4:4) transmissions.

Visual Unity and its development partners have already put 4K Gateway through its paces on a series of projects. These include a remote real-time low-latency collaboration on color grading of 4K video content, which was demonstrated over a distance of more than 6200 miles (10000 km) from Prague to San Diego, California. Another successful project saw 4K Gateway employed to remotely access scientific visualisations using low-latency real-time interactive navigation in a remote 3D building model.

“We have proved that 4K Gateway can overcome bandwidth constrains to provide a truly flexible and efficient distribution platform for high-end content,” Petru adds. “Our successful collaboration with CESNET and ACE has resulted in a product that makes the breath-taking image quality of 4K native resolution even more accessible.”
Visual Unity’s 4K Gateway was previewed at NAB 2012 to great critical acclaim. It can now be seen by European audiences at IBC 2012 (Hall 3 Stand B60). For further information please visit the vu4K Gateway dedicated website – www.4kgateway.com or visit Visual Unity’s website – www.visualunity.com

MSM Gives Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center a Jump Start

BUENA PARK, Calif.—In 1960, when local citizen and banker Thomas H. Bowlus directed that his estate be used to benefit a cultural arts center, he may not have imagined that the Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center (Iola, Kansas) would celebrate its 48th anniversary this year and a major audio upgrade.

MSM Systems (Lawrence, Kansas) was chosen to complete the upgrade in time for the center’s anniversary celebration. The 750-seat Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center mission is defined as “to broaden the cultural background of area youth and make available to the citizens of the area facilities, programs and entertainment not otherwise available.” When the Center originally opened its doors in 1964, it welcomed such artist luminaries as Count Basie, Marcel Marceau, Jungle Jack Hanna, and Lionel Hampton, and more recently Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, to name a few.

“I had worked with MSM in the past and have been very pleased,” states Jeff Jordan, Technical Director at the Bowlus Center. “In determining a bid winner, customer service weighed in very high! Almost all of our shows occur in the evening and on weekends, so we needed a company that would answer the phone at 9:00 pm on a Saturday night if we had a problem. Working with MSM systems has turned out to be a great choice for the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. Everyone at MSM, from the owner to the intern, was on site and did a fantastic job. I wish every company we dealt with had this much passion and a great work ethic as the guys at MSM. The best people to work with are the ones that find solutions to problems they encounter that were unforeseen.”

“I chose NEXO speakers as the line array because they were the exact fit for the space,” states Kent Clasen, President of MSM Systems. “I demonstrated a GEO S12 system for Jeff, and he loved what he heard. When I told him it fit the Center’s budget, he was very excited.”

The main audio upgrade consists of a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital audio console, two Yamaha P3500 amps, ten NEXO GEO S12 line array boxes hung in a vertically arrayed formation five per side, two NEXO RS18 Ray Subs located in the pit, two NEXO PS8s used for front fills, JBL SRX721M monitors, and a Clearcom Intercom system. Two NEXO 4×4 NXAmps were also installed to power the system. “The integrated NXAMP system has over 30,000 watts in eight rack spaces with FIR filters,’ says Clasen, ‘and the new presets in the NXamp are really great with a flat phase response.”

Clasen added that the Yamaha M7CL was a great choice for the Center because it can be used with ease at either front of house or monitors by visiting engineers. “The Bowlus’ previous system was in operation for almost 50 years, so we had to come up with a system that would last!”

Director Susan Raines and Jordan were very hands on in making sure they got the best system. “The decision to enhance our system was based on the requirement for increased clarity and coverage with the ability to do everything from just one presenter on stage to a full band and everything in between,” adds Jordan. “The Bowlus has a very dynamic season every year; we do the local high school’s play, a community theatre musical, our local community college’s annual musical, the Bowlus’ Five Series Shows, and a Gospel concert series. The Bowlus needed an installed sound system that could do it all, rather than continuing to rent a system, and I believe we got one! This year will be the first time our local clients will be able to use a sound system of this quality,” says Jordan.”

The Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center will host the 20th Annual Buster Keaton Celebration this September. For more information on the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, visit www.bowluscenter.org.

Video Equipment Rentals Continues to Deliver World-Class Audio With Purchase of HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series Line Arrays

NORTHRIDGE, California – VER (Video Equipment Rentals), one of the largest AV/audio/broadcast equipment rental companies providing AV/tour solutions, recently added HARMAN’S JBL VTX Series line arrays to its world-class inventory of products for the rental, staging and broadcast industries. The purchase of VTX line arrays builds on VER’s existing inventory of JBL VERTEC® line array systems.

VER is one of the world’s leading “dry-hire” equipment rental providers, with more than 25 locations across the United States, Canada and Europe. “VER began in 2000, specializing in video rentals for the broadcast industry and corporate AV applications,” said Joe Casanova, National Audio Sales/Product Manager for VER (East). “Around 2002, we discovered there was a huge opportunity to supply audio equipment as well, so from that point on we have been a complete gear resource for all facets of production.”

VER’s purchase of JBL VTX line array loudspeakers includes 96 of the flagship V25 loudspeaker and 64 S28 subwoofers, along with 32 Crown Audio VRack complete amplification systems.

“We bought our first VERTEC system in 2005, with VT4888 and VT4889 loudspeakers and VT4880 subwoofers, so this was a natural migration to VTX,” Casanova said. “We’re a client-driven company, so our initial decision to purchase VERTEC was a result of the demands of our clients. We’re already seeing a similar demand for VTX.”

Casanova first heard the VTX system at the HARMAN Business and Technology Conference in January 2012, where he listened to a shootout between VTX and some competitive loudspeaker models. “We really liked the way the VTX system sounded and knew we needed to add VTX to our inventory when they became available,” Casanova said.

“It makes sense that VTX sounds so good because Paul Bauman [Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional] was the brainchild behind this product, and his work with the VERTEC V5 DSP tunings marked such a dramatic improvement to the VERTEC sound that we knew he was onto something good with VTX,” said Brady Belavek, National Audio Sales/Product Manager for VER (West).

“Really, between VTX and the V5 tunings for our VERTEC system, it’s almost like we have two new PA systems!” Casanova added.

“It has great high end and the design is terrific,” Belavek said. “When you consider the power behind the speakers and the smoothness of the new D2 drivers, we expect VTX to be on the majority of riders of the biggest touring acts in the world.”

“We have worked really closely with Paul and [Field Engineer, JBL Professional] Raul Gonzalez in purchasing this system, and they have been tremendous in getting us what we need and making sure our product worked well out of the gate,” Casanova said.

“Our VTX products have been in use every day since we purchased them, so it’s staying extremely busy and being used constantly,” Casanova noted. “We have had a lot of success with it right off the bat.”

Clay Paky Sharpy Fixtures Earn Country Creds

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures showed they are country strong with appearances in the lighting rigs for superstar Kenny Chesney’s Brothers of the Sun Tour with with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw and the fan-favorite CMA Music Festival with concerts at Nashville’s LP Field.

Lighting designer Mike Swinford used 16 Sharpys in the Brothers of the Sun rig; he integrated 55 in the rig for the CMA Music Festival, which was videotaped over four nights to create a music special to air later this summer on ABC.

“I first saw the Sharpys online when they were being introduced to the U.S.,” recalls Swinford. “We had some of the first batches; I used them on TV, and then they went on tour. I really like how small and fast they are. Of course, their main attribute is the tight beam that cuts through any other light in the design. I think of them as the new ACL.”

For the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, which plays stadiums coast to coast, Swinford is using four groups of four Sharpys mounted on top of giant Marshall amp replicas. “They stay on the cabinets for shipping, so they don’t get handled every day,” he notes. “That makes for a very fast set up.”

Swinford deployed a complement of 55 Sharpy fixtures on the CMA Music Festival spread out on low circular trusses “so almost every camera would get them in frame,” he explains.

Mark Butts, who served as lighting director for the CMA Music Festival and as programmer for the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, concurs with Swinford on the power of the compact Sharpys. “They hold their own against 350 1200-watt lights in the stadiums on tour with Kenny and Tim,” he says. “And they’re very unique for TV. Their color temperature is so high that I had to run them on a low percentage for the CMA Music Festival because they blow everything out.”

Swinford ran the lights for about a month in rehearsals prior to the tour. “The Sharpys are one of the most reliable lights we have,” he says. “We seldom have issues with them.”

A.C.T Lighting is the distributor for Clay Paky in North America.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “I love that the same designers are using our Sharpys for touring as well as television. It’s a clear demonstration of their impact and versatility.”
