From Lobby to Sky Bar, Meyer Sound Low-Voltage Systems Enchant Guests at Five-Star Qatar Hotel

Soaring 300 meters over Qatar’s capital of Doha, The Torch Doha—one of the Middle East’s newest five-star hotels—captivates guests with luxury and a flair for aesthetic refinement. Throughout the hotel’s public spaces, the elegant décor is complemented by music that flows through an extensive (yet discreet) installation of 195 Meyer Sound low-voltage self-powered loudspeakers and 55 miniature subwoofers.

“Meyer Sound’s low-voltage systems were the only solution that could meet the stringent requirements for full spectrum audio including extremely compact enclosures, wide frequency response with ultra-low distortion, high SPL-to-size ratio, superior speech intelligibility, custom color finishes, and flexible mounting options,” says system designer and project manager, Pradeep Kumar of Doha-based AVtech, the integrator for all the hotel’s music systems.

A particularly challenging space for controlled, quality sound was a 20-meter high lobby atrium, for which Kumar specified ten MM-4XPD directional self-powered loudspeakers. Other lobby and reception areas are served by MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers and MM-10 miniature subwoofers.

Ceiling systems throughout the hotel’s Three Sixty revolving restaurant, meeting rooms, health clubs, and business center employ a total of 109 low-voltage Stella-4C loudspeakers, while a quartet of robust UPJunior VariO loudspeakers take care of the lofty cantilevered pool area and the Sky bar. A total of 31 sleek, surface-mount Stella-4 loudspeakers blend with the décor in the sushi restaurant, lounges, and bars, with additional MM-10 subwoofers filling in the lower octaves. A Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor optimizes audio response in the acoustically challenging lobby zone.

The low-voltage loudspeakers receive both audio signal and remote DC powering from rack-mount power supplies, featuring two MPS-481 and seven MPS-488HP 48V DC units, as well as 12 Stella-188 18V DC units deployed around the installation.

“The hotel management is extremely happy with the quality of the Meyer Sound system,” Kumar reports. “It was more than they expected. Every detail of the music is crystal clear, even at low levels that allow guests to comfortably engage in conversation.”

“It is a wonderful system,” adds Sherif Sabry, The Torch Doha’s director of sales and marketing. “The sound quality is very high throughout, and we are pleased that there is no echo in the very high lobby atrium.”

In addition to Meyer Sound products, the venue also features an Allen & Heath iDR-8 that handles mixing and matrixing of local audio sources in the meeting rooms, while AV switching is assigned to an Extron SMX System MultiMatrix.

The 167 luxurious rooms of The Torch Doha occupy 17 floors of the Aspire Tower, an iconic symbol built for the 2006 Asian Games held in the surrounding Aspire Zone sports complex. Architect Hadi Simaan, in association with AREP and Ove Arup & Partners engineers, designed the Aspire Tower building. The Torch Doha hotel project—with architecture design by Karim Azzabi and interior design by Artline R+M & Associates of Doha—was completed in 2011.

Sound Devices PIX-DOCK Now Shipping

Data Dock for PIX-CADDY with Thunderbolt Connection

AMSTERDAM, AUGUST 30, 2012Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, announces that its PIX-DOCK is now shipping, in time for the 2012 IBC Show (Stand 8.D74). Having first made its debut at this year’s NAB Show, PIX-DOCK connects drives mounted in a Sound Devices PIX-CADDY 2 to computers equipped with Thunderbolt™ high-speed I/O over a single Thunderbolt cable.

The PIX-CADDY 2, which is used to connect SSD volumes to all PIX recorders, is an SSD mounting accessory that also operates as a multi-format interface to attach drives to a computer for file transfer and management. With the introduction of the PIX-DOCK, users can now leverage Thunderbolt’s fast transfer speeds between drives and computers. Thunderbolt offers up to 10 Gbps interconnection speeds, making the file copying of large-capacity drives fast and easy. When using fast storage drives, its high throughput allows realtime playback of multiple streams of high-data-rate video.

The PIX-DOCK provides both power and data over a single cable and is compatible with SATA drives. It includes a six-foot Thunderbolt cable that connects to the PIX-CADDY 2 using its eSATAp connection. It also offers a secure, latching connection to PIX-CADDY, and its weighted base prevents sliding on desktop surfaces.

“After a successful launch at this year’s NAB show, we are thrilled to announce that our PIX-DOCK is available,” says Jon Tatooles, managing director at Sound Devices. “PIX-DOCK simplifies and speeds the transfer and management of files when using our PIX recorders. By utilizing Thunderbolt, we are able to provide our users with blazing fast and reliable transfers.”

The PIX 220i, PIX 240i and PIX 260 record directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or Avid’s DNxHD codecs. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post production, making the workflow simple and fast. The PIX 240i and PIX 260 add even more flexibility, with their time code, sync-generator, and simultaneous SDI and HDMI outputs. All PIX recorders incorporate the company’s award-winning audio expertise and performance.

WorldStage East Moves Back to Manhattan After 10-year “Make LIC Hip” Project is Completed.

After more than a decade in Long Island City, WorldStage has moved its administrative offices to midtown Manhattan in a newly-designed space at 259 West 30th Street. WorldStage, the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications, Inc., retains its warehouse in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Shelly Sabel, the company’s new director of design, came onboard after the 12th floor office space had been selected with Vice President of Staging, Mike Halper spearheading the exhaustive search. The new neighborhood offers many advantages from proximity to clients and popular event spaces to the convenience of nearby Penn Station and the New Jersey warehouse.

“This space was an old sewing factory and had fantastic bones,” Sabel recalls. “It was all open space that didn’t compromise the charm and character of the building. We just needed to highlight it with fixtures, fittings and design.”

Sabel says her goal was to make the new administrative offices as “playful” as the personality of the company. “What makes WorldStage great is not only the amazing technology we offer but also the people who put it all together. I wanted to create a flexible and collaborative work environment for everyone using bright colors and lots of light.”

She started with the floor, installing Flor brand carpet tiles in graphic patterns of turquoise, blue-green and magenta. Walls are painted white although the reception area has festive colors that make the entry pop; it welcomes visitors with comfortable couches, laptop desks and a gum ball machine.

The office’s windows, which afford a 360º view of the city, were stripped back to their original finishes. “Although this space is smaller than the premises in Long Island City, it’s so light and airy that it doesn’t feel smaller,” Sabel points out. “We have views of the Post Office, Madison Square Garden, the new World Trade Center and points east. There’s a real old-school New York feel looking out at the water towers and treetops. And we get incredible views of lightning storms.”

Sabel’s design career spans numerous arenas and media. She has lit the Ralph Lauren flagship store windows for eleven years and designed lighting for the flagship shops of Levis and Donna Karan Madison Avenue. Theatrical credits include collaborations with choreographer Savion Glover, Streb vs. Gravity at Lincoln Center and the Pilobolus dance company; her light-based sculptures and installations have been shown in an array of galleries. Never having worked in an office before, Sabel studied the interaction and functions of the WorldStage staff to design a space that would meet the needs of employees.

For example, project managers, who frequently work onsite, reside in a “bullpen” space with desks facing in multiple directions to ensure focus and privacy as they talk to clients. Customized furniture includes horizontal file cabinets with cushions on top and casters attached so they can roll from desk to desk as extra seating or serve as window seats from which staffers can appreciate the cityscape.

Says company President Josh Weisberg, “Nothing against the Borough of Queens, but we all love being back in midtown. It’s way more convenient for client meetings and our shop is just a short train ride from Penn Station, which is around the corner. Shelly did an absolutely spectacular job of reflecting the essence of our personality in the design of the space and it’s furnishings.”

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

Visual Unity Helps Czech TV Viewers Enjoy An Unprecedented Multimedia Sporting Experience

Leading broadcast and multiscreen systems integrator Visual Unity helped Czech public service broadcaster Czech TV to deliver premium coverage of the recent Games in London, with enhanced online and mobile services.

Visual Unity was able to handle this prestigious project on the basis of its extensive experience of designing, delivering and integrating turnkey TV systems, broadcast-IT convergent and multiscreen solutions.

Since 1999, Visual Unity has undertaken a variety of successful projects for Czech Television including the recent design and build of an eight-camera High Definition Outside Broadcast vehicle and powering the broadcaster’s award-winning on-line and mobile service iVysilani with its vuMediaTM multiscreen platform.

Anticipating huge demand for this year’s largest sports event across the full range of mobile devices, Czech TV enhanced iVysilani by providing a dedicated website (www.loh.cz) that offered two HD sports TV channels and 8 further on-line only channels showing live streaming and highlights. All of these channels were available on PCs and smartphones via dedicated apps for iPhone/iPad (iOS) and Android.

“Preparing for the Games was a new challenge for us,” says Pavlina Kvapilova, Executive Director of Czech Television´s New Media Division. “We were very careful to ensure maximum on-line coverage because, in today’s media landscape, it is crucial that traditional TV broadcasting is complemented by streamed coverage that viewers can access from their desktop computers and mobile devices. In cooperation with Visual Unity as our systems integration partner, we are pleased to say that we achieved our goals and made the Games a multiplatform experience for our viewers.”

For the duration of the event in London, Czech TV employed Visual Unity’s own Content Delivery Network with a dedicated 80Gbps capacity (HD 720p/3.5Mbit or SD up to 2Mbit) so that viewers could keep up with the sporting action, the results and highlights, on a 24 hour basis. Eight additional encoders were installed by Visual Unity to maintain the live streaming services and to support Czech Television’s existing capacity.

Visual Unity also designed and delivered two HD channels, linking Czech Television’s Prague centre to the Czech dedicated Games studio in London. The technology, which is based on low latency Teracue encoder/decoder products, enabled smoother communication between the two studios and allowed for the internal distribution of eight traditional broadcast and streaming signals within the Czech TV complex in Prague. RIEDEL MediorNet technology was also deployed to reduce the amount of cables needed to ensure all signals reached all locations during this important broadcasting period.

Tomas Petru, President and MD Visual Unity, says: “We are delighted to have helped Czech Television to deliver the first truly multiscreen Games. By combining our broadcast and multiscreen expertise with cutting-edge technology, we were able to offer a solution that allowed audiences to enjoy this prestigious event on any screen.”
