311’s Unity Tour Calls For Clay Paky Alpha Beam 1500s

Alternative rock band 311 is playing 40 amphitheater shows on its Unity Tour with Slightly Stoopid this summer, and Clay Paky Alpha Beam 1500 automated fixtures are along for the ride.

Lighting designer Joe Paradise has 14 Alpha Beam 1500s on the show, which he spreads out 60 feet wide. Eight are placed in a line on the floor and three are suspended on each side on double-hung trusses, which trim at about 14 feet. “They can go up and get really big stuff on the audience as well as deliver some cross-stage throws,” he says.

Paradise notes that the look of the show changes with the eclectic array of tunes in the band’s set list. “There are lots of saturated colors with the Alpha Beams cutting through in complimentary colors. Kind of an old-school ACL look but with a lot more punch from the Clay Pakys.”

The Alpha Beam 1500 is the most powerful luminaire belonging to the special category of fully-automated ACL fixtures. They generate a solid, super-concentrated parallel beam for very long-throw projections, which built-in devices shape and animate with colours and movement for fantastic mid-air effects. With the new 1500W lamp, the Alpha Beam 1500 can also become a spotlight for long-distance focused projections and perform as a good narrow-angle washlight.

“The lights are incredibly bright and the beam is really great,” says Paradise. “The color and beam angle and shape are consistent light to light. You can focus them in full daylight, too. And for their size, the Alpha Beams have very fast pan and tilt.”

Steven “Creech” Anderson of Premiere Global Production provided the Alpha Beam 1500s. “There was not a substitution comparable to the Clay Paky Fixture and we were amazed with the output and intensity of the beam. There is not a fixture in the system that has the power this fixture has,” he says.

“The Alpha Beams are awesome,” Paradise concludes. “I love them. I turn them on every day, and they work – I haven’t had to have a spare. They really are amazing and so bright. That’s why I got them.”

A.C.T Lighting is the distributor for Clay Paky in North America.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “Joe has been a long time supporter of ours and we’re proud that he’s using our lights for this tour. I can see that they contribute greatly to the overall look of the shows.”

Anton/Bauer to Highlight Portable Power Solutions for Production Professionals at BIRTV 2012

BEIJING, CHINA, AUGUST 20, 2012—Anton/Bauer®, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a premier global provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries, will demonstrate its latest portable power, lighting and transmission products to attendees at BIRTV 2012 (Videocom Booth 8B15). The company will highlight its new AB-HDRF transmitter system, CINE VCLX battery system and new Gold Mount® solutions for the Canon C300/C500 and RED EPIC digital cinema cameras.

“BIRTV brings together some of the leading professionals in the film and television industry,” says Shin Minowa, vice president of marketing and business development, Anton/Bauer. “We look forward to meeting with attendees to help identify the appropriate power solutions for their individual applications. Our latest offerings are aimed to help further protect their investments while providing seamless power and compatibility.”

• The AB-HDRF system is a compact 5.8 GHz COFDM RF system capable of transmitting a robust HD signal over great distances all while being powered by Anton/Bauer batteries. Anton/Bauer collaborated with Vitec Group sister company Integrated Microwave Technologies, LLC (IMT) to develop an RF system that could mount directly onto the camera, using a camera’s existing Anton/Bauer Gold Mount solution. The AB-HDTX sends its signal directly to the AB-HDRX dual-diversity receiver or the DirectVu handheld confidence monitor/receiver. It has an RF output of 100 mW and is capable of accepting a wide range of HD/SD video formats, along with embedded audio from the camera’s HD SDI output. The use of MPEG-4 compression allows the signal to travel a half-mile in line-of-site applications. The system offers users the flexibility to choose from 12 different channels in which to transmit, ensuring the least amount of interference. The unit’s size makes it ideal for reality-based, ENG/EFP and live event coverage.

• The QRC-CA940 Gold Mount solution was designed to help streamline battery management for Canon EOS C300 and C500 digital cinema camera users, providing 7.2V of power to the camera via a DC connector and 14.4V on three PowerTap® connectors. It is compatible with Anton/Bauer’s mounting bracket for 15mm or 19mm rod systems, the MATRIX Cheese Plate. It can also be adapted to third-party support systems (15mm or 19mm clamp kits sold separately).

• The QRC-EPIC Gold Mount was developed to power the RED EPIC and SCARLET cameras. It features one 6-pin LEMO connector and two PowerTap connectors for accessories. Using the QRC-EPIC Gold Mount, the battery communicates directly with the camera, providing precise and accurate runtime directly into the viewfinder, allowing the user to keep their eye on a shot instead of their battery.

• The CINE VCLX battery incorporates all the features of the Logic Series Batteries to provide superior run-time and service life for the power demands of today’s cinema production and lighting equipment. All the safety and high-power-draw performance of Nickel Metal Hydride cell chemistry technology is available in a power package specifically designed for the integration of 24V film and 14V video equipment. CINE VCLX batteries are powerful enough to run for extended periods of time with many of the most popular cameras for film and digital cinematography, including ARRI 16 and 35mm film cameras, ALEXA, RED ONE, EPIC, Scarlett, Phantom HD, Genesis, Weisscam and P&S Technik. The high-power 28V output is also capable of powering 200w HMI lights, LED panels and portable microwave units. All Anton/Bauer CINE batteries feature a new RealTime® LCD that accurately displays remaining run-time and a visual LED warning indicator when 15 minutes of run-time remain. The CINE VCLX can be transported without restriction under the IATA and DOT safety regulations (http://www.antonbauer.com/Support/TransportationInformation).

CTS Audio Uses New Yamaha CL Consoles at High Profile Christian Events

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Women of Faith, the nation’s largest live event for women has unveiled its most transformational tour yet entitled “Celebrate What Matters.” The cross-country tour highlights some never-before-seen elements including a live worship band, a new state-of-the art stage, and live ballet. The four-month, 23-city North American tour launched on August 3rd in Columbus, Ohio with a diverse line up of 27 well-known speakers, authors, musicians, and performers including inspirational speakers Ann Voskamp, Jennie Allen, Pat Smith, and Liz Curtis Higgs. Multi-award winning musical guest CeCe Winans returned for the tour again this year along with Mandisa, Amy Grant, Selah. Sheila Walsh, Patsy Clairmont, Sandi Patty, Brenda Warner, Marilyn Meberg, Andy Andrews, Ken Davis, and Lisa Harper.

CTS Audio (Nashville), who has supported Women of Faith for over 12 years, is providing two of the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Consoles for front of house and monitors and two RIO 3224 boxes for the east coast with a similar set up for the west coast dates.

“We selected to use the new Yamaha CL consoles on the “Celebrate What Matters” tour because of its smaller footprint, its digital networking capabilities with Dante, and input and output capabilities,” states Mike Taylor, Vice President, CTS Audio. “The console is the best sounding console that Yamaha has put out so far in the digital market. With the internal add ons offered in the desk, plug ins aren’t even needed.” Prior to setting out on the tour, CTS audio engineers obtained in-house training by Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems staff.

In July, CTS Audio provided Yamaha CL consoles for the Covenant High In Christ Youth Conference (CHIC), a tri-annual event, with performances by Chris Tomlin, Skillet, La Crae, Michael Gungor, Willow Creek Worship Team, and over 6,000 high school students in attendance. For this event, CTS Audio provided four CL5 consoles, two at front of house, two at monitors, and four RIO 3224 boxes. “The set up for this event was unique in that we daisy chained all the equipment together to form one large network for openings and worship acts,” says Taylor. “We did this so that inputs/outputs could be called into any surface we wanted for maximum flexibility. With the new platform, we were able to run one network and have 128 inputs and 64 outputs available. This was important since we needed all of them for our house band from Willow Creek as well as the guest bands.”

Up to eight external Rio (Remote I/O) boxes can be used for a total of 256 channels via the Dante digital network. The 5U rack space Rio3224-D includes 32 remote controlled mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs, and four AES-3 outs. The 3U Rio1608-D includes 16 remote controlled mic/line inputs and eight line outputs. Dante network I/O can easily be set up and patched utilizing familiar paradigms within the console user interface, with no external software required for network operations.

The goal of the CHIC Conference is to help high school age students in their walk with Christ, something that matches up perfectly with the core of CTS Audio’s beliefs. “Being part of such a moving event is something that is near to my heart,” states FOH engineer Jon Schwarz.

CTS Audio staff was on site for guest engineers who required CL training, if necessary. However, Taylor said the engineers found it easy to step up and get to work because the console is laid out in a simple-to-follow-through process. “We were also able to load engineer files from other Yamaha products seamlessly. Everyone left talking about how fantastic the desk sounded.”

Electrosonic Installs Control Room Display and Operator Consoles at England’s Hindhead Tunnels

Electrosonic has helped the twin Hindhead Tunnels in Southern England deliver on their promise of roadway efficiency by installing a large overview videowall display and operator consoles in the control room at the tunnels’ northern end.

Before the tunnels were opened in July 2011, the main A3 London-to-Portsmouth road in the south of England had suffered from delays as drivers passed through the Hindhead area, which includes a site of special scientific interest and the Devil’s Punchbowl beauty spot. Now a four-mile bypass, of which 1.14 miles comprise the twin-bore tunnels, makes the route safer and more efficient.

Working with main contractor Balfour Beatty Engineering Services for the Highways Agency, Electrosonic engineered and installed the videowall plus a series of operator consoles. In the control room, operators can monitor images from 104 cameras and review data supplied by the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which supervises the lighting, ventilation, incident detection and other support systems.

The Highways Agency wanted the control room to operate in a similar fashion to other traffic control rooms on the major road network, but with the additional stipulation that data relating to non-traffic aspects of the tunnel – such as live CCTV images – be accessible at the same time. Electrosonic devised a solution based on ergonomic operator consoles and a videowall display. Electrosonic produced graphic visualizations to help the client see how the control system would fit in the available space. The finished result corresponds almost exactly to the visualizations.

The videowall features six, 50-inch Planar Clarity Margay II DLP projection cubes arranged in a 3×2 array. The format, along with the cubes’ 16:9 aspect ratio, ensures that the maximum amount of information can be displayed in a space with relatively low ceiling height. The cubes give a pixel perfect, near seamless image surface with a total resolution of 5760×2160 pixels while requiring just 18 inches in depth.

An Extron VN-Quantum image processor feeds the display. It is configured to receive 36 video inputs and four computer graphics images. The processor can display any required combination of images, each of which can be any size and positioned anywhere on the display. Multiple pre-sets optimize the display for different situations or monitoring requirements; operators select them at the click of a mouse on the display control computer.

Graphics reach the processor via a standard Ethernet network, but the video inputs are derived from a switching matrix, which is part of the CCTV system.

Electrosonic supplied the mounting frame for the videowall cubes complete with cladding and a base unit outfitted with storage space.

The company also provided electronically-operated “sit-stand” type operator consoles, which allow operators to choose the most comfortable operating height. The SBFI Equinox consoles are equipped with Axiom universal screen mounts.

To ensure many years of reliable service, Electrosonic is providing support service for the next five years through the facility managers, Enterprise Mouchel. The fixed-price support covers lamp replacement, 24/7 emergency call out with a four-hour response time, and routine preventative maintenance.

SnapAV Revolutionizes Power Products Category with WATTBOX Line; Unique 2-Piece Conditioner Separates Power Unit from Display for Unparalleled Mounting Options

Charlotte, NC – SnapAV's WATTBOX 600 Series Power Conditioner SnapAV, a manufacturer and exclusive source of more than 1,000 A/V solutions for the residential and commercial channels, today announced the launch of its WATTBOX™ rack mount and standalone power surge / conditioners and power strips. Replacing and expanding upon the company’s Episode® power line, the WATTBOX models are designed to simplify the process of mounting electrical outlets in equipment racks, structured wiring cans and behind TVs. This is achieved via rugged all-metal chassis designs that are more compact, yet yield greater spacing between outlets, and rack models that can be angled and recessed – some with optional display faceplates. The all-new metal chassis products range from $59.95 to $489.95 MSRP depending on model and features.

600 Series 2-piece Rack-Mountable Power Conditioner
A prime example of SnapAV’s design philosophy for the line is the WATTBOX 600 Series 2-piece Rack-Mountable Power Conditioner. Eliminating the common struggle of reaching the electrical outlets within the rack, the 600 Series power unit can be mounted anywhere in the rack including recessed and angled up or down. The 1 RU face plate (displays voltage and current meters and incorporates dual USB charging ports) is simply connected to the outlet bank by an RJ45 cable and separate power cable.

Integrated into the 600 Series is the latest in power conditioning and surge protection technologies including sequenced outlets, isolated filter banks, fireproof MOVs, noise filtration and Safe Voltage protection (for brown-outs).

The 600 Series 12-outlet Sequencing Power Conditioner with optional face plate retails for $489.95.

“Some dealers want the outlet bank at the top of the rack, some want it at the bottom, some want it flush, and some prefer it slightly recessed for wire management,” says SnapAV Senior Vice President Adam Levy. “With WATTBOX, dealers can have it any way they want it. With the unique 2-piece design, they can even add a display for the front of the rack without making a compromise. It is the kind of design that can only come from really listening carefully to dealer’s needs.”

All WATTBOX products are backed by UL Certification and Connected Equipment Warranties.

Later this quarter, SnapAV plans to add IP-addressable products to the WATTBOX line.

Meyer Sound Ships Steerable CAL Column Array Loudspeaker

Meyer Sound has begun delivery of its CAL column array loudspeaker this summer. Available in three models, CAL is a self-powered installation product that introduces an unprecedented level of vocal clarity in even the most reverberant environments. The recipients of the first shipments include a collegiate stadium and an indoor auditorium in the US as well as an Australian live performing arts centre.

“CAL is a digitally steerable column array product in which all high-frequency and low-frequency drivers are tight-packed in a bi-amped configuration and are individually amplified and processed,” says John McMahon, executive director of operations and digital products at Meyer Sound. “These engineering details are essential in enabling the beam control needed for a human voice to cut through a highly reverberant acoustic space.”

CAL’s vertical beam can be angled up or down in one-degree increments up to 30 degrees to aim only at target coverage areas without exciting an entire architectural space. Two of the CAL versions, CAL 64 and CAL 96, also include beam-splitting capabilities for applications where a balcony wall may cause undesired reflections.

Part of the EZ-RJ45 “System”, the New Connectors Combine the EZ-RJ45  Patented Ease-of-Use with the Advantages of Shielding for an Unparalleled Solution.

EZ-RJ45 shielded connectors

CAMARILLO, Calif., August 17, 2012 – Platinum ToolsÒ (www.platinumtools.com), the leader in solutions for the preparation, installation and hand termination of wire and cable, announces the launch of the updated EZ-RJ45Òshielded Cat5e/6 connectors with internal or external ground. The EZ-RJ45 shielded connectors are now shipping.

“Made in the USA and designed to work on both Cat5e and Cat6 cables, solid or stranded, our upgraded EZ-RJ45 connectors combine the performance exclusive to its predecessor’s design, but now with the advantages inherent to shielded products for an unparalleled solution,” saidLee Sachs, Platinum Tools, Inc. president and general manager. “By shielding the EZ-RJ45, additional electrical isolation means the cables are even less susceptible to electrical interference caused by nearby equipment or wires and, in response, are less likely to cause interference themselves. Additionally, in applications where NEXT, FEXT, and AXT are an issue, using shielded products can be the solution.”

By utilizing the new EZ-RJ45, simplify twisted pair terminations by allowing the wires to be inserted through the connector and out the front, to easily verify the proper wiring order. Pulling the connector down over the cable jacket and seating it tightly in the rear of the connector optimizes electrical performance of the termination. Reducing the distance between the wire twists and contacts also improves performance. Terminate with the patented Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 Crimp Tools…crimp and trim in one cycle.  Additional features of the EZ-RJ45 shielded Cat5e/6 connectors include:

  • Made in the USA

The EZ-RJPROä HD modular crimp tool has been designed to terminate all EZ-RJ45Ò (Cat3, 5, 5e, and 6) and EZ-RJ11 (4 and 6 contact) plugs and can also be used to terminate most regular RJ45 and RJ12/11 plugs. It provides a ratcheted, high leverage, ultra stable platform for consistent, repeatable terminations. This heavy duty tool is the perfect solution when working with high performance, larger OD cables that are tougher to terminate due to larger wire gauges, thicker, harder insulation on the conductors and pair separating splines. Not only will connectivity obstacles be overcome, but the installer can be assured that every termination will meet FCC specifications.

The patented, rugged PRO HD tool, which will reliably crimp and trim wires at the same time, has an all steel frame, PVC handles, and a rust resistant, black oxide finish to stand up to the rigors of field installations. It will also terminate plugs made for either solid or stranded cable and even includes a 568A and 568B color code etched into the side of the handle for EZ reference.

This heavy duty ratchet style tool includes integral cable cutter/jacket strippers for round (Cat 3-6) and flat (silver satin) cable, providing optimal pressure to all contacts for a precise crimp while the vertical action assures all contacts are terminated to the proper depth.

“We will continue to innovate and improve our unique EZ-RJ45 connectors and tools,” added Sachs. “Products designed to increase an installer’s efficiency have been the key to our success and they will continue to dominate our product line in the future.”

Clearwing Teams With Martin Audio MLA At Summerfest

Guinness World Records-certified as “The World’s Largest Music Festival,” Summerfest was held at the 75-acre Henry Maier Festival Park along the lakefront in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The massive event lasted 11 days, included 17 stages, the 23,000-capacity Marcus Amphitheater and over 700 bands that drew close to a million fans.

For over 16 years, Clearwing Productions has handled the challenge of coordinating sound, light, staging and logistics for the festival with the quality, professionalism and attention to detail they’re known for.

Making its debut at the Summerfest Miller Lite Oasis Stage was the Martin Audio MLA (Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array) 36 that consists of 11 MLA and one MLD downfill cabinet per side along with 12 MLX subwoofers.

The lineup at the Oasis stage included an eclectic mix of artists such as the popular new alternative band Fun., Kool & The Gang, Joe Walsh, Ziggy Marley, The Roots, Cake, Sublime with Rome, Atmosphere, Paul Oakenfold, Robyn, plus Rodney Atkins and Garry Allan from the Country Throwdown Tour.

Designing a loudspeaker system that could provide exceptional sound quality and coverage for all those types of music without spillage onto adjacent stages played a large role in determining MLA as the system of choice.

Asked about the setup, MLA Support Specialist Jim Jorgensen says, “We went with 12 MLA per side rolling out at 63 Hz to keep as much low end in the main array as possible and used the subs as more of an effect. One of the goals of this particular event was to maintain the coverage in a specific area, which MLA is really designed for.

“In terms of the low end response,” continues Jorgensen, “Ziggy Marley’s “engineer first brought up the system without the subs on and he was happy. When he added in subs, the ear-to-ear grin on his face was priceless”

According to Jorgensen, “One of the main things that people experienced using MLA was that the PA never got in their way. They didn’t have to spend hours tuning it. No one turned it on and thought it wasn’t going to work or we needed to change anything to get the sound and coverage we were looking for.”

In terms of MLA’s exceptional control, the crew used a daytime setting that covered up to just behind the mix position with -4 halfway through the picnic tables and a “hard avoid” behind that to keep the volume at manageable levels for those walking past the stage.

The MLA night setting went all the way up to nearly four feet in front of the buildings with a “hard avoid” past the restaurants in the back of the seating area so that festival goers could dance while standing in line but be heard when ordering their food. The MLX subs were stacked two high, three wide on the stage and delayed outside to inside to narrow the sub bass spillage and contain it to the area.

Reactions from FOH engineers to MLA for the different bands were “uniformly positive,” says Jorgensen. Robyn’s engineer said it “was pokey in all the right places,” which in Scottish audio speak means it stood out where it was supposed to. fun.’s engineer said it was the biggest sounding PA he’d ever worked with in that “he kept pushing and pushing it, and it just kept getting bigger.”

“Clearwing’s Steve Harvey (systems engineer-north stages) who had previous experience with Martin Audio’s W8LC arrays quickly understood how MLA worked and was able to explain the system to other people while becoming an advocate,” adds Jim. “He’s quite sharp and has great ears, so he got it right away.”

Working in tandem with MLA were 12 Martin Audio LE2100 stage monitors and Wavefront enclosures for sidefill along with a Digico SD10 for FOH and a Yamaha PM5D for monitors, all provided by Clearwing.

In fact, “Most of the stages on the grounds had Martin Audio wedges and fill speakers,” Jorgensen concluded. “People were also talking about how well Zac Brown covered the Marcus Amphitheater with MLA during his show to a sold out crowd. It is impressive to see that MLA can go from a tradtional midwestern sized festival stage all the way to a full scale summer concert shed with the same coherence and coverage abilities. Basically, people throughout the event commented on the whole run as to how MLA was dynamic, it flexed and grooved, and adapted to the style of music coming out of it.”

About MLA™ (Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array)
The result of many years of intensive R&D, MLA’s methodology replaces trial-and-error array design with intelligent numerical optimization of the array’s output based on a highly accurate acoustic model. The multi-cellular format has six individual cells in each enclosure, each with its own DSP and amplification.

With up to 24 enclosures, each MLA array has up to 144 cells — too great a number to optimize manually, or by ear. Instead, Martin Audio’s proprietary Display2™ system design software automatically calculates FIR DSP filters for each cell and a redundant-ring audio network (U-NET™) downloads the settings into each array enclosure. Martin Audio’s VU-NET™ software provides real-time control and monitoring of the system.

MLA delivers a frequency response and SPL consistency never before achievable; a very high system output (140dB peak, per cabinet @1m); Automatic optimization of the array, both physically (splay angles) and electronically (DSP); Computer control and monitoring of the entire system, and total control of sound system balance for engineers and sound technicians.

MLA is fully integrated, with Class D amplification, DSP and U-NET digital audio
network built into each enclosure. MLA complete systems are ready-to-use, with MLA, MLD and MLX enclosures, flying hardware, software, cabling and training all supplied. Everything needed is included. All ancillary items — from tablet PC and Merlin™ controller to network interconnects and mains distro — are also included in the complete system package. This ensures full compatibility worldwide, down to cabling and accessories.

Additional features include 90° x 7.5° dispersion; a compact size (1136mm wide x 372mm high x 675mm deep), one-box-fits-all (festivals to theaters) application range and a global voltage, power factor corrected power supply.

MLA’s compact size and very high output allows it to be shipped using smaller trucks, offering considerable savings and reduced carbon footprint. The system also includes the MLX powered, flyable subwoofer capable of an unprecedented measured peak output of 150dB @ 1m; MLD downfill cabinet, and Merlin 4-in/10-out system controller and network hub. Audio input is via analog, AES3 or U-NET.

By adopting these principles and system components MLA is optimized for every member of the audience — from a 2,000 capacity theater, to a 20,000-seat arena, to a 100,000-person festival site. It will deliver the engineer’s exact mix to every seat (up to over 150 meters) with precision, exceptional power and clarity.
