grandMAs and Clay Paky Sharpys are Winners at Miss Florida USA 2013 Pageant

In its second consecutive year broadcasting in HD on primetime television, the Miss Florida USA 2013 pageant again featured grandMA lighting consoles behind the scenes. This time lighting director Stefan DeWilde also selected a complement of Clay Paky Sharpys for the event boosting the impact of the lighting rig. A.C.T Lighting in the exclusive distributor of both grandMA and Clay Paky fixtures in North America.

Staged in Davie’s Bailey Concert Hall on the campus of Broward University, the pageant featured more contestants than ever before and was televised live to fans across the Sunshine State. Michelle Aguirre was crowned Miss Florida and moves on to the national Miss USA competition.

“We had twice as many moving fixtures as last year,” reports DeWilde. “I used Sharpys around the floor for aerial beam effects. They were a prominent part of the program – every scene was tightened by Sharpy. Although we only had six of them, they cut through 85 other automated fixtures.”

DeWilde also deployed an expanded grandMA system, which featured an NSP and eight universes. “It was very important to have the NSP,” he says. “It was essential to have everything networked on the show.”

The Orlando office of stage lighting rental and production company Christie Lites furnished the grandMA and Sharpy fixtures. “CEO Huntly Christie really came through to pull together this equipment,” says DeWilde. “The partnership between Christie and A.C.T is just great.”

“This pageant was the first time I’d used the Sharpys, and they were so phenomenal that I’m going to use them in the New World Center,” he says. DeWilde is director of lighting for the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. “The Sharpys are small and lightweight, and their output and speed is amazing.”

He also gives kudos to the grandMAs. “The consoles were fast with no lag in network communication. Shows like this always come down to flexibility, speed and consoles. We have a ton of equipment and very little time to put things together.”

BASSMAXX Launches CCM112 YesMon Powered Monitor

AUSTIN, Texas, August 14, 2012 — BASSMAXX (www.bassmaxx.com), an industry leader in high-output subwoofers and audiophile-quality professional loudspeakers, is proud to announce the launch of the bi-amped CCM112 YesMon Powered Monitor. The CCM112 is scheduled to ship in the 4th quarter of 2012 with an MSRP of $2,570.00

“Big things can definitely come in small packages,” said David Lee, president and designer at BASSMAXX. “We put many ‘big’ elements into this very small monitor, so the size of the CCM simply does not prepare you for its capabilities and output. We’ve had major artists presented with them for use as a stage monitor who took a look at them with disdain, saying ‘That’s not going to be big enough, mate’, and then look astonished when we turned them on! It definitely is a big surprise when you compare size to volume.

Lee explained that the biggest news about the compact CCM112 may be the development of tailored anti-feedback presets for specific major-brand microphones. “When the preset that matches your specific microphone is loaded, the monitor is automatically EQ’d for maximum gain before feedback, meaning that the monitor/mic combination is practically ‘rung out’ for you, leaving little or no tuning required by the user for maximum sound and minimum hassles,” continued Lee. “This is a great time-saver for the professional and a great problem solver for the amateur. New microphone presets will be made available for download from www.bassmaxx.com as they come to market and/or by customer special request. Up to 60 presets can be stored on the DSP through a USB or Ethernet interface and, once loaded, can be recalled though the on-board display controller without a computer hook-up.”

Physically, the CCM112 is an extremely compact 12-inch monitor that incorporates a 1500W Powersoft class D amplifier coupled to a high power handling neodymium woofer and a co-axially mounted 1.4-inch exit compression driver. The co-axial point source provides more consistent off-axis response and superior feedback rejection. Performance is enhanced by a 96kHz networkable DSP, unique anti-feedback DSP programming with up to 60 presets on board and unlimited presets available online.

The CCM112 and its DSP presets are designed to deliver maximum gain before feedback, maximum output level, maximum utility, and maximum reliability. The minimums were focused on size and weight. The cabinet is made of Baltic Birch, measures 14in. x 15in. x 12in. and weighs 30.6 lbs. It has four deployment angles plus a cast metal pole-mount. Its small size and lightweight Neodymium magnet structure allows for easy transport and the 1500W class D amp and on-board DSP make setup a snap. Power in, signal in, ready to begin.

“A great monitor is one that gives you headroom and not headaches,” Lee concluded. “The CCM112 was made for anyone who wants to be able to carry an entire monitor rig in each hand without breaking a sweat, who would rather take their own monitors on the road than rely on whatever happens to be at the gig, who works in venues with small stages, has to supply an entire show’s lights and sound out of one truck, or who needs a really powerful speaker in a tiny little box. Or, all of the above. Although we class them as monitors, they can power an entire small show with one on each side and a BASSMAXX sub below.”

Additional specifications include:
• Frequency response (±3 dB): 80-18,000Hz
• Maximum sustained output: 123 dB
• Short-term peak output: 126dB
• Enclosure type: multi-angle acoustic suspension wedge
• Dimensions (H x W x D): 14in. x 15in. x 12in.
• Net weight: 30.6 lbs.
• Shipping weight: 35 lbs.
• Exterior finish: high-pressure polyurethane
• Grill: custom-cut diffraction pattern foam-backed 1/8in. aluminum
• Voltage operating range: 95-250V, auto-switching
• Current draw: 95-125V: 3.6A@1/8 power, 195-250V: 2.2A@1/8 power
• DSP: comprehensive bi-amped processing, custom anti-feedback presets

BASSMAXX products are designed to deliver high fidelity and high-output, and also to be low maintenance and incredibly rugged. The electronics and circuitry are covered by the BASSMAXX 2-year ‘Sound Defense’ warranty with a 6-year limited warranty on the cabinet.

For more information on BASSMAXX products and services, please call 713-397-4466, or visit www.BASSMAXX.com.

Women in AV Support InfoComm AV Week 2012

The Women in AV (WAVE) have taken on an outreach initiative to support the InfoComm AV Week, which is October 14 – 20, 2012. During this week, we’re asking members of WAVE to get involved in educating middle and high school students to build awareness of the AV industry.

There are three simple ways to participate in this WAVE initiative. Exploit your resources and choose whichever activity is right for you. If you want to do more than one, that’s even better! AV Week and WAVE’s program provide a prime opportunity to not only generate awareness of the industry, but also enables you to get involved within your local community. By joining this initiative, you will be directly helping to teach youth on how the AV industry can lead to a fulfilling, creative, and inspired career path! WAVE has outlined these as our group’s possible activities:

WORK WITH SCIENCE TEACHERS
Be a guest lecturer and offer lessons on the science of AV, including activities such as identifying the AV in use at their school. InfoComm can provide you with lesson plans, facts and statistics (www.avweek.org/toolkit.cfm) A good resource is the National Science Teachers Association (www.nsta.org)

REACH OUT TO YOUR LOCAL TSA CHAPTER
The Technology Student Association is a nation, nonprofit organization for middle and high school students with a strong interest in technology as well as for their teachers who serve as advisors. Search the TSA website at (www.tsaweb.org/state-delegations) to see if there is a chapter in your state. See if they would like to have you speak to their members during AV Week.

DONATE TO A SCHOOL
Do you have any used AV equipment? Or do you want to raise funds to buy some AV that a local school needs? Check with your local school to see if there is a need and consider how you may be able to help.

DO A TECH TOUR
Check with a local school to see if there is interest from the science, film and theater students to tour your AV facility or a local venue to get a peak of the AV “behind the scenes”.

Please submit your activities, photos and information to Kelly Perkins, WAVE Marketing Director, at kperkins@womeninav.com or by phone at (612) 298-7688. We want to make sure your efforts are recognized in Women in AV press, womeninav.com as well as our social media outlets. For more information please visit the website at www.womeninav.com.

Cobalt Digital to Bring Multi-Channel Loudness Processing & Monitoring Over IP to The European Market at IBC 2012

Visit Cobalt at IBC Stand 10.B27

AWARD-WINNING TECHNOLOGY OFFERS MAXIMUM COMPLIANCE WITH MINIMUM MAINTENANCE

Urbana, IL, Cobalt Digital (www.CobaltDigital.com), manufacturer of award-winning 3G/HD/SD-SDI conversion gear for broadcast environments, will introduce the European market to technologies at IBC that provide an easy path to EBU R128 and CALM compliance. Notable among a complement of ground-breaking products is the multi-award-winning LMNTS™, an exciting breakthrough in comprehensive transport-based loudness processing, and SpotCheck™, an innovative transport stream compliance monitor. Cobalt will also demonstrate the new Blue Box Group™ series of throw down conversion modules, a new range of MADI cards including Embedder/De-embedder (with 192 x 192 crosspoint switch) and MADI DA, and both physical (OGCP-9000 and OGCP-9000/CC optimised for colour correction) and virtual remote control panels.

LMNTS (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams)
Using LINEAR ACOUSTIC® Aeromax™ technology, Cobalt’s LMNTS™ (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams) represents a quantum leap in multi-stream loudness processing by offering an economic, consistent solution that’s easy to integrate.

Winner of both TV Technology’s STAR and Broadcast Engineering’s Pick Hit awards at NAB 2012, LMNTS performs automatic loudness processing across many transport streams making it ideal for MVPDs and MSOs where a large number of diverse programming sources must be simultaneously controlled. It operates at the MPEG IP transport layer to provide a practical loudness management solution without the need or complexity of external codecs transferring between baseband and MPEG external interfaces.

Available in both IP and ASI versions, LMNTS extracts and decodes audio codec packets from the program stream, performs high-quality PCM loudness processing, and then re-encodes and re-packets the audio within its stream. Physically, all data connections to LMNTS are via GigE IP or ASI interfaces using an industry-standard IT hardware platform with no intermediary breakouts.

SpotCheck – Audio Loudness Measurement and Recorded Data Logging System
Cobalt’s SpotCheck™ takes the guesswork out of loudness measurement and logging, and facilitates CALM and EBU R128 compliance. SpotCheck monitors an IP, ASI, or a transmitted over-the-air MPEG stream at the transmit (emission) encode point, and provides easy-to-use, convenient, long-term access to loudness records for all programming initiated from a broadcasting facility.

Segments can be searched via the intuitive display of loudness plots along with date/time-stamped thumbnails of the actual corresponding programming, or can optionally be queried and correlated using a database relationship with the facility as-run automation list. SpotCheck readily pinpoints all segments that are outside of CALM/R128 compliance, providing documentary proof should an erroneous complaint appear. Ethernet control enables integration with facility IT providing long-term logging/thumbnail storage.

Requiring no breakout from the MPEG stream and not affecting the emission stream in any way, SpotCheck provides an easily integrated, facility-based, powerful solution for loudness records and compliance interrogation and verification.

Blue Box Group – Interface Converter boxes
Cobalt is returning to its roots by presenting a modular, low-cost, signal conversion line offering excellent performance, ease-of-operation, and practical installation. The series – named Blue Box Group™ – receives its power directly form video monitors or other equipment via USB without bulky “wall wart” adapters.

MADI cards – Ideal for Outside Broadcast environment
Ideal for the OB market, Cobalt’s new series of MADI embedder/de-embedder processing cards opens up new possibilities in multi-channel/multi-source baseband audio routing (192 x 192 crosspoint switch). The 9374-EMDE Quad Stream SDI – AES – MADI series, perfect for mobile environments, provides a full unrestricted audio crosspoint that allows channel routing between any channels on up to four SDI steams, discrete AES-3id, and AES10 MADI interfaces. It uses standard 1694A cabling thus eliminating the need for fiber. Its excellent MADI receiver performance allows up to 250m MADI receive capability with no signal degradation.

Embed and de-embed-only versions are also available, as well as dual SDI stream 9372 and single SDI stream 9371 versions.

Physical and Virtual Remote Control Panels
Cobalt has developed unique remote control panels for control, configuration and monitoring of the 9000 COMPASS® and Fusion3G® cards. The OGCP-9000 can be used with multiple 8321 and HPF-9000 frames and cards. Operating with the Dashboard GUI the OGCP-9000 offers the intuitive control for quick, efficient operation. The OGCP-9000/CC is optimised for fast, real time adjustment for on-air colour correction.

The WINOGCP virtual control panel via PC offers convenient controls that mirror the abilities of the hard OGCP-9000 panel using computer mouse via Ethernet.

Both the OGCP-9000 and WINOGCP are ideal for monitoring and logging of loudness control to meet EBU R128 and ATSC A85 requirements.
