HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi Series Consoles Travel The World With Kaiser Chiefs

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — While on tour with 5-piece indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs, sound engineer Chris Leckie, relies on HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi Series consoles for all FOH and monitor needs. Kaiser Chiefs, who released their debut album titled Employment in 2005, have enjoyed great international success touring throughout Europe and the North America.

In 2007, Kaiser Chiefs were about to embark on their largest and most ambitious arena tour to date in order to support their second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob, when their previous engineer decided to give up his position. Leckie came on board and adjusted to the task, but was always jealous of the Soundcraft Vi6 console that was on tour with them to handle the opening acts. “As the tour progressed I found myself experiencing console envy!” said Leckie.

Leckie noticed how easily visiting engineers, from youngsters to experienced professionals like him, became acquainted with the feature set of the Vi6 and produced stunning results. “I quickly realized I needed to switch allegiances,” Leckie said.

During the European part of the tour, which is currently taking place through the end of July, Leckie and monitor engineer, Ilias Andrianatos, have been able to use the Vi6, which is now their console of choice. However, during the preceding North American leg of the tour, it was not logistically practical to transport the Vi6 around the country. “HARMAN and Soundcraft were helpful in supplying a pair of the more compact Vi1 consoles to be used by me and our monitor engineer. This allowed us to retain most of the facilities available to us on our Vi6, and keep some degree of consistency from show to show.”

Many challenges come with being a sound engineer for Kaiser Chiefs, according to Leckie. “They don’t play to a click track which adds difficulty to my job. There isn’t a rack of equipment sending me identical program material at the same level every night, and if I’m going to keep a handle on the somewhat unpredictable, wriggling beast that is a Kaiser show, I need to see what is going on at all times and have access to everything as quickly as I would on an analog board. Soundcraft and the Vi Series does that, and at any point I can see EQ, gates, compression, effects, etc., on every channel, rather than having to negotiate my way through multiple tiers and screens.”

While on tour, Leckie explained the importance of having a reliable console that can perform in any situation. “I also need a console that is easy and quick to use, and on top of everything, it needs to sound good.”

“With each software update the desk gets better, with sensible and useful additions that continue to make my job easier and more enjoyable. The new user layers allow me to arrange faders into convenient locations for specific songs,” Leckie said. “This has been a revelation! The quality of EQ and dynamics of the Vi console is superb as well. At any time, Ricky Wilson [vocals] can pick up any of the three different vocal microphones at his disposal and I have to maintain the intelligibility and consistency when he climbs up in the front of the PA or wherever he runs around.”

“I’m grateful to be mixing on a Soundcraft board and continue to love my job, which is the most important part. With the help of Soundcraft it only gets better,” Leckie summed up.

T-VIPS CP524 TS Adapter Enables Operators to Flexibly Repackage and Deliver Video Content to Multiple End Points

T-VIPS IBC stand: Hall 1. B71.

Oslo, Norway – T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announced the IBC launch of the CP524 TS Adapter, which supports multi-stream (any input to any output), remultiplexing, and flexible format conversion.

The CP524 has been designed to meet the requirements of operators and service providers for flexible repacking, and delivery of content for multiple end points. The CP524’s filtering and remultiplexing features enable operators to save valuable bandwidth. Pre-production models have been successfully trialed at operators’ sites and the product is now ready to ship.

T-VIPS anticipates that the CP524 will be particularly popular with:

- Broadcast service providers that offer television contribution and distribution services
- IP network operators offering managed video services
- Satellite network operators for contribution to satellite uplink sites
- Terrestrial network operators for the primary distribution of ATSC, DVB-T and DVB-T2 signals.
“The CP524 TS Adapter provides a single-box solution that takes the pain out of remultiplexing and filtering, and mixing and matching services from multiple inputs to multiple outputs,” said Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “As well as the remultiplexing functionality we’ve also included extra features such as interface conversion, advanced IP processing, redundancy, monitoring and PSI/SI/PSIP handling, making this an incredibly powerful solution. For many operators and service providers our CP524 is the only MPEG-2 TS solution they will need and since it’s a single unit it reduces running costs and space requirements too.”

The variety of network infrastructures used in the broadcast industry today has led to increasing demand for network adaption and conversion between formats and interfaces. The CP524 solves these issues, for up to four transport streams, by offering powerful network adaption between ASI, IP, SONET/SDH and SMPTE 310.

In addition to providing conversion between interfaces, the CP524 provides powerful TS processing capabilities that are easy to use and configure. The CP524 is also equipped with reliability features such as hitless switching with diversity reception, service fallback and T-VIPS Embedded Redundancy Control (TERC) to ensure 100% uptime even in the case of severe packet or link loss.

The CP524 is part of T-VIPS’ cProcessor toolbox which makes TS processing simple and delivers flexible, cost-effective interfacing to broadcast and IP-based networks. The CP524 gives operators the capability to process, tailor and distribute signals according to their own needs.

Platinum Tools® Launches EZ-RJ45® Cat5e/6 Shielded Connectors w/Internal or External Ground

CAMARILLO, Calif., August 10, 2012 – Platinum Tools (www.platinumtools.com), the leader in solutions for the preparation, installation and hand termination of wire and cable, announces the launch of the recently updated EZ-RJ45 shielded Cat5e/6 connectors with internal or external ground. The EZ-RJ45 shielded connectors are now shipping.

“Made in the USA and designed to work on both Cat5e and Cat6 cables, solid or stranded, our upgraded EZ-RJ45 connectors combine the performance exclusive to its predecessor’s design, but now with the advantages inherent to shielded products for an unparalleled solution,” said Lee Sachs, Platinum Tools, Inc. president and general manager. “By shielding the EZ-RJ45, additional electrical isolation means the cables are even less susceptible to electrical interference caused by nearby equipment or wires and, in response, are less likely to cause interference themselves. Additionally, in applications where NEXT, FEXT, and AXT are an issue, using shielded products can be the solution.”

By utilizing the new EZ-RJ45, simplify twisted pair terminations by allowing the wires to be inserted through the connector and out the front, to easily verify the proper wiring order. Pulling the connector down over the cable jacket and seating it tightly in the rear of the connector optimizes electrical performance of the termination. Reducing the distance between the wire twists and contacts also improves performance. Terminate with the patented Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 Crimp Tools…crimp and trim in one cycle.

Additional features of the EZ-RJ45 shielded Cat5e/6 connectors include:
• Made in the USA
• through holes allow wire pairs to be inserted through front of connector for faster terminations
• EZ to verify wire sequence, reduces scrap
• more reliable and higher performance
• works with solid or stranded wire; separate connectors not required, reducing inventory and confusion
• simple one-piece design; bars or liners not required
• use in Category 3, 5, 5E or 6 compliant data networks
• UL rated, FCC & RoHS compliant
• 50 micro inch gold plated
• internal ground: maximum cable OD: 0.260in.; maximum conductor OD: 0.041in.
• external ground: maximum cable OD: 0.280+in.; maximum conductor OD: 0.041in.

The EZ-RJPRO HD modular crimp tool has been designed to terminate all EZ-RJ45 (Cat3, 5, 5e, and 6) and EZ-RJ11 (4 and 6 contact) plugs and can also be used to terminate most regular RJ45 and RJ12/11 plugs. It provides a ratcheted, high leverage, ultra stable platform for consistent, repeatable terminations. This heavy duty tool is the perfect solution when working with high performance, larger OD cables that are tougher to terminate due to larger wire gauges, thicker, harder insulation on the conductors and pair separating splines. Not only will connectivity obstacles be overcome, but the installer can be assured that every termination will meet FCC specifications.

The patented, rugged PRO HD tool, which will reliably crimp and trim wires at the same time, has an all steel frame, PVC handles, and a rust resistant, black oxide finish to stand up to the rigors of field installations.

This heavy duty ratchet style tool includes integral cable cutter/jacket strippers for round (Cat 3-6) and flat (silver satin) cable, providing optimal pressure to all contacts for a precise crimp while the vertical action assures all contacts are terminated to the proper depth.

“We will continue to innovate and improve our unique EZ-RJ45 connectors and tools,” added Sachs. “Products designed to increase an installer’s efficiency have been the key to our success and they will continue to dominate our product line in the future.”

Auralex® Now Shipping HoverMat™ Isolation Platform

— More portable, less expensive and lighter than Auralex®’s acclaimed HoverDeck™, the HoverMat™ isolates a drum set from the floor or a hollow stage, reducing coloration from floor resonance and improving sound isolation —

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, August 9, 2012 – Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the world’s leading brand of acoustical treatments and soon to celebrate its 35th anniversary, is now shipping its new HoverMat™ Isolation Platform. Like Auralex’s critically acclaimed HoverDeck™, the HoverMat isolates a drum set from the floor or a hollow stage, reducing coloration from floor resonance by decoupling the drum kit, thereby resulting in a tighter, more pure sound for both studio and live applications. The HoverMat differs from the HoverDeck by offering a solution that is more portable, lighter and easier to set up & tear down (it simply rolls up) and at a lower price point than the popular HoverDeck. The HoverMat takes up less cubic space than a similarly-sized HoverDeck setup.

The HoverMat comes as a 4′x6′ section of Auralex’s sound-deadening SheetBlok™ sound barrier material, covered with charcoal gray Ozite-type, commercial-grade, road-ready carpet, and is ideal for musicians on the go, worship groups, live performance venues, or anywhere a drum kit needs additional isolation.

Genelec Unveils SpeakerAngle App for iOS Devices

— New app allows users to correctly configure and match the angling of stereo or surround-sound speaker systems —

NATICK, MA, August 8, 2012 — Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring, is proud to present the SpeakerAngle app for iOS devices, the first digital tool which allows anyone to correctly set and match the angling (“toe-in”) of both stereo and 7.1 surround sound speakers, helping to ensure optimum audio fidelity. Easy and intuitive to use, SpeakerAngle was co-developed by Genelec and AudioApps (a new mobile apps company) and is compatible with iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later and iPhone Touch 4th Generation and later. SpeakerAngle is available now at the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/speakerangle/id549033688?ls=1&mt=8), at a price of just 99 cents.

In the app, dedicated onscreen speaker icons move as the actual speaker is rotated, while number boxes below each speaker icon continuously display the angle of the speaker. The number boxes also change color to let users know when their speaker is angled within industry recommendations, and when it is angled to the same degree as the other one in the pair (i.e. left and right in stereo systems; front left / front right, rear left / rear right and side left / side right in 7.1 surround systems). Detailed information screens provide a tutorial on speaker angling, as well as step-by-step instructions for using SpeakerAngle.

“The new Genelec SpeakerAngle app is a convenient and intuitive way to quickly set and confirm the angle of your speakers in your listening environment,” stated Will Eggleston, Genelec USA Marketing Director. “This is a perfect tool for home theater owners, recording engineers, system installers and anyone else working to get optimum sound from any loudspeaker system. The possibilities are exciting, and we look forward to audio enthusiasts everywhere putting it to good use.”

To use SpeakerAngle, simply select the desired mode of operation (Stereo or Surround), then place your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch on top of the speaker your want to angle. Set the speaker so that it is facing straight towards you, then touch the corresponding speaker icon so that it lights up. Next, touch the icon’s number box to let SpeakerAngle know that the selected speaker is currently at “zero-axis.” Now physically rotate the speaker inwards (that is, towards the listening position). The selected speaker icon will move accordingly, and the number box below it will display the degree to which the speaker is angled. When the speaker is angled within the industry recommendation of 20 degrees to 45 degrees, the number box changes color, from red to green. When you touch the speaker icon once again (or select any other speaker icon), the number box changes color to orange, and “freezes” the currently displayed angle. Next, touch the paired speaker icon (for example, the right speaker in a stereo system if you have just angled the left speaker). Pick up your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and place it on top of that speaker, then touch the number box below the speaker icon. Physically rotate the speaker inwards until the number box changes color to yellow, indicating that this speaker is now angled to the same degree as the first one. To continue experimenting with different speaker angles, you can start from scratch at any time by pressing SpeakerAngle’s RESET button.
